The arrival of the Christmas holidays is the start of a mad dash for a lot of people, for all sorts of different reasons. Buying gifts, sending out invitations, preparing food, work and office parties; everything seems to happen at once! In their attempt to get things done in this short period of time, many people end up being exhausted by the time Christmas rolls around.

Why not combine pleasure and prac-ticality? An invitation to relax is a great gift idea for those you love. In other words — massages of any kind, such as: Swedish; therapeutic; lymphatic drain-age; Cali fornian; Reiki; Shiatsu; massage with hot stones; re flexology; etc.

You could also combine: advice on styling; pressotherapy; body wrap treatments that help in the natural elimination of toxins; a yoga session; a choc-olate therapy treatment or even a total makeover. Whatever the recipient’s tastes, their every wish will be granted.

You will be able to find many other relaxation packages, in the form of giftcertificates, in

various locations in your area. Combine manicures, pedicures, exfoliation, body and skin care with massages for an easy gift idea that is sure to please the person you’re giving to.

Nordic baths are also a great way of relaxing. It basically works by fluc-tuating body temperature to stimulate the immune system and activate the formation of antibo dies. The best way of drawing maximum benefit from this treatment is to follow a precise sequence.

Give the gift of relaxation; a thoughtful staff will

delight your loved one with their delicate attentions.

The gift of relaxation...

Last-minute shopping for the holidays

It’s December 12 and you’ve just barely made it through half of your holiday shopping list. The panic may have set in that you just don’t have enough time

to get everything done.This is a common scenario around the holi-days. Shoppers have the best intentions to get their gifts early, but whether because of work obligations or social events, the task seems to get pushed further and further into December. Soon many are staring down the calendar experiencing sweaty palms.For the scores of shoppers who consciously or subconsciously wait until the last possible minute to shop, there are ways to survive and surprise friends and family with great gifts.

• Gift cards: They may not have sentimen-tal meaning behind them, but gift cards are fast and easy. Chances are you can run into a store and be out with a handful of gift cards in less than 15 minutes, depend-ing on lines at the checkout counter. Also, many supermarkets, bookstores and other retailers offer gift card kiosks enabling you to shop for different gift cards all in one place.

• Food and beverages: While everyone is heading to the mall in droves, you can be stepping inside of a gourmet food or spir-its store. Splurge on fine cheeses or that trendy bottle of liquor that a gift recipient has mentioned but not yet purchased for him- or herself.

• Magazine subscription: A magazine sub-scription is an easy fix as a last-minute gift. Purchase one copy of the magazine at the newsstand and wrap it up nicely. Put a note that a year’s worth of this periodical is on the way. No one will suspect that the gift was a last-minute thought.

• E-certificates: Retailers like music or book sellers will e-mail a gift certificate code to the person of your choice on a selected date. For those who are never without an e-reader or mp3 player, digital gifts could fit the bill.

• Gas card: It may sound funny and tacky, but a gas card from a brand-name station is a universally acceptable gift for anyone who drives regularly. With fluctuating gas prices, filling up the tank can be an expen-sive venture. Having a pre-paid gift card can help.

Online retailers are also there to help last-minute shoppers. Many online retailers guarantee in-time-for-Christmas shipping even on gifts ordered as late as December 23. However, overnight shipping charges will cost more. But it’s all worth it to get the item in time.Waiting until the last minute for shopping can induce some anxiety. But knowing about easy gifts for procrastinators can take the stress out of this type of shopping.

Gift wrapping tricks and tips

The holidays are here and that means shoppers have started to stockpile gifts for those they love. Once the shopping rush is over, the time to wrap all of those great finds and treasures has come.Although some people are gift-wrap gurus, there are many others who feel that

their wrapping skills are lacking. Regardless, anyone can create delightful wrapped gifts with a little know-how.

PrepareThe first step to wrapping is to have all of the supplies in one place. There are some people who have actually dedicated small rooms as gift-wrap stations. While you don’t have to go this far, find a large table and keep your tape, tags, paper, ribbon, scissor, pen, and other accessories nearby.Also, sort out the gifts according to recipient and have any gift receipts handy to wrap up with the gift.Wrap at a time when there are no distractions and you can devote your attention to the task at hand, like after children have gone to bed or during the day when no one is home.

Paper or Bags?When purchasing wrapping paper, it may be tempting to skimp on the quality of the paper to save money. However, a thicker, higher quality paper will make wrapping go more smoothly. That’s because it will be less likely to tear on boxes or when you’re rolling out and cutting it.Thicker paper means you’ll also be able to achieve more intricate folds and bet-ter creasing around boxes. It also may be more forgivable around oddly shaped items.Gift bags are the go-to wrapping medi-um when you’re short on time or have items that are not easily wrapped with paper. Because they come in a variety of sizes – and even giant plastic bags to contain large gifts – they are often more convenient.

Other TipsThere are different tips that can help with wrapping.• Buy neutral-patterned wrapping paper that coordinates with other papers. This way if

you run out of one type of paper you can stagger other pieces and make a collage of papers so there’s no waste.

• Use ribbon to dress up a gift and direct the eye away from any imperfections.• Keep a stack of paper scraps and use it instead of tissue paper to fill in gift bags.• Keep scissors sharp for clean cuts.• Pack smaller items or oddly shaped things into a different container that is easier to

wrap.• Roll up clothing and place into a paper towel tube to turn the wrapping into a candy

cane shaped gift.

Practice often makes perfect when it comes to wrapping gifts. Having the right paper, a few decorative supplies and some patience can ensure that gifts look festive this year.

Campaign off to fast startSteve Kidd

Western News Staff

Though the goal is a big one, the an-nual Tree of Dreams campaign is off to a solid start.

This year, the South Okanagan Si-milkameen Medical Foundation is hop-ing to raise $632,000 through their an-nual Christmas campaign, to supply a shopping list of needs at Penticton Re-gional Hospital.

It’s a huge goal, and one that Janice Perrino, executive director of the founda-tion, worries that they will have to extend the Christmas campaign into the spring to meet. But thanks to some early donors, there is already $200,000 in the kitty.

The Penticton Hospital Auxiliary has stepped forward with a donation of $10,000, and the South Okanagan Health Care Auxiliary has chipped in $15,000. Then the Summerland Health Care Aux-iliary added their donation of $145,000 for one of the items on the shopping list, a new operating room table and lights at the Summerland Health Centre.

“To date we have raised just over $200,000,” said Perrino.

She said that while there is a long way to go to reach the fundraising goal, this kind of start has them well on their way.

This is the seventh annual Tree of Dreams campaign, which Perrino said was started in response to rising costs of equipment and growing needs at the hospital.

“The needs were becoming so huge we couldn’t keep up with it. So we said this is where we have to expand and try to do more at Christmas where there are opportunities for people to give in

a small but very meaningful way,” said Perrino. “It’s nice to be able to give it as a gift.”

The annual campaign has helped the foundation meet their prime goal of keeping the hospital up to date.

“This hospital is over 60 years old, there are always going to be needs here. But for as old as our hospital is, we have some of the best equipment around,” said Perrino. “We have one of the best MRI’s in the province. We were the first one to have a digital mammography machine, the first to have a digital CT scanner. It was all because of donated funds.”

That sort of excellence is key to the foundation’s mission, Perrino said, pointing out that the provincial govern-ment has massive costs just keeping the doors open and staff paid.

“As they cut back services, they cut back on equipment and we are not pre-pared to allow our community to have less than the very best,” said Perrino. “This foundation has been going for 30 years. We made the commitment back then that we were going to provide the best that we could to make sure our hos-pital had everything that it needed.”

Tree of Dreams brochures outlining this year’s campaign and the equipment they hope to purchase have already been delivered to every home and the first Christmas bulbs have already been lit on the Christmas tree on the roof of PRH.

If you would like more information or would like to make a donation, please visit the medical foundation, which is located in PRH, mail your donation in to 550 Carmi Ave., Penticton, B.C. V2A 3G6 or call 250-492-9027 or toll free at 1-866-771-0994.

Community foundation announces grants cycleThe Community Foundation of

the South Okanagan has launched the 2013 granting cycle, which clos-es on Feb. 8, 2013.

In 2012, the Community Founda-tion disbursed more than $190,000 to charities throughout the South Okanagan Similkameen, bringing total granting to more than $1 mil-lion in 21 years of serving the South Okanagan.

Thirty-eight grants totaling $108,000 were awarded to Pentic-ton charities in 2012. An additional

$82,000 was awarded to charities throughout the South Okanagan Similkameen. These grants were paid from investment earnings on more than $6 million in endowment funds.

In 2012, grants were paid out to 12 different areas of need in Pentic-ton: Health received $29,553.89; en-vironment $5,223.62; arts and cul-ture $19,559.66; education $4,800; social services $19,002.45; sports and recreation $2,325.69; adminis-tration $11,582.09; heritage and res-

toration $1,500; children and youth $7,598.93; seniors $730.85; scholar-ship $6,298.47; and animal welfare $217.92.

Organizations that are registered as a Canadian charity under the Fed-eral Income Tax Act are eligible to apply to the foundation for grants. Grants cannot be made to individu-als.

Funding guidelines can be ob-tained by contacting the founda-tion’s office at 250-493-9311 or by visiting the website: www.cfso.net.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

You have an unexpected encounter with old university friends who’d love to see your new home. Your in-laws call to let you know they’ll be flying in today instead of Monday. Your partner has invited all the members of his hockey team over and he forgot to let you know.

You’d better be prepared for these not-so-improbable scenarios! Christmas is a time of year when surprise visits may happen at any moment, and that’s why it’s so important to always be stocked up on emergency supplies, just in case.

Here are some ideas for your stock of supplies:

• A few bottles of wine (red, white and rosé);

• Two different types of beer, with a few bottles of each keeping nice and cool in the fridge;

• Fresh fruits and veg-etables for making a fast fruit salad or veg-gies and dip;

• Juices for the children;• Folding chairs;• An ashtray for smok-

ers;

• Crackers and cheeses;• Everything required to prepare the most

popular cocktails (vodka, rum, tequila, gin, curacao, Baileys, fruit juice, citrus fruits, Maraschino cherries, a shaker, glasses, ice cubes, etc.);

• Mineral water or pop for those who don’t drink alcohol;

• A selection of coffees (with and with-out caffeine), teas and herbal teas, not forgetting milk, cream, and sugar;

• Frozen dishes, especially hors d’oeuvres and other appetizers;

• Paper napkins in sufficient quantities;• A handy source of music (CD or MP3

player, etc.);• Packs of cards, board and video games;• And, last but not least, your welcom-

ing smile!

Get more exercise, maintain a healthier diet, improve the way you manage your finances, stop smoking, use the car less... December is barely over and your list of New Year’s resolutions is as long as your arm! Fortified with steely determination and raring to go, you have every inten-tion of starting off the New Year on the right foot. And yet, as time goes by, your resolutions slip away. Why is it so darn difficult to keep New Year’s resolutions?

First of all, human beings don’t like change and leaving their comfort zone is easier said than done. All your best inten-tions and your motivation will tend to fade away after a few weeks of hard work unless you redouble your zeal.

The key? Use some common sense and don’t lie to yourself. Having two, three, four, or even five resolutions on your list is all very well on paper, but it’s not feasible in reality. Concentrate your efforts on just one resolution and do your utmost to succeed in it. Otherwise you’ll keep going down the same frustrating path year after year.

Be realistic. Would you like to lose some weight? Set yourself an objective that is within your reach so you won’t become discouraged and give up. Take it one week at a time and keep notes on your progress. If you ever feel like giving up, look at your notes and you may be surprised by the progress you’ve made.

And don’t hes-itate to ask for the support of your loved ones. Their love is an ever-lasting source of motivation!

Why is it so difficult to keep New Year’s resolutions?

Be realistic. Set yourself an objective that is within your reach so you won’t become discouraged and give up.
