PARENT REMINDER It is much easier for students, staff and parents if you let the office know of an appointment or early dismissal as early in the day as possible. Sometimes classes are not in their classroom therefore we cannot locate your student immediately. Also, we cannot give a student a pass without first receiving a call or note from a parent. Thank you for helping us.

STUDENT MEDICAL INSURANCE ARE YOU AWARE........ You may purchase medical insurance for your student through First Agency, Inc. Insurance Company. Coverage is available for 24-Hour Protection or At School ONLY Protection. Forms are available in the high school office if you have any questions.

College Visit A campus visit is defined as a meeting with an advisor, observing classes and touring the campus. NOTE: Freshman orientation and/or scheduling for classes and placement testing will not be considered a “campus visit”. These activities should be arranged after school hours. Juniors and seniors will be allowed one (1) school related absence per year for a campus visit. Additional visits will be recorded as excused (E) absences only as a result of a parent call. All campus visits must be completed by May 1.

Dance Chaperones

In order to put on dances for our students here at HHS, we need help from adults in the community to act as chaperones. Parents, family friends, older siblings, aunts/uncles, youth group leaders are all great chaperones! In order to keep our dances a safe and fun environment, we need help from chaperones. Prom will have two shifts for workers. Shift 1 - 7:30 - 9:45 p.m. and Shift 2 - 9:30 - 11:15 p.m. If you are interested in helping put on a special night for our students, please feel free to contact Mrs. Jesky ([email protected]) or Ms. Muñoz ([email protected]).

Prom this year will be held at Stone Water Country Club in Caledonia on Saturday, April 22, 2017 from 8:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. Usually, Junior and Senior parents help chaperone this dance. Don’t let your Junior or Senior talk you out of it, we need your help and you will be busy during the event! If you are willing and able to help, please contact us.

The cost of this dance is $50 per student and we want students to have as much time as possible to save their money. Prom is a fundraiser for each year’s Junior class and money raised is used during their Senior year.

SNOW DAY PROCEDURE FOR HOT LUNCH ~ With snow just around thecorner, the food service program would like to remind parents and students about what will happen if school is closed due to weather. If the district is closed, the menu that was supposed to be served on the snow day will be moved to the next school day. An example: if school is canceled on Tuesday due to weather, Tuesday’s menu will be served on Wednesday and the menu that was scheduled for Wednesday will be completely canceled. The only exception to this policy is if school is canceled on Friday. In this case, Friday’s menu will be completely canceled and we will continue with the regular menu on Monday. Information on

what menu will be served on the day you return will be available on Twitter or the foodservice web page at www.jenhudfood.org. Please feel free to contact the food service department at 457-2400 if you have any questions or are unsure of what the menu will be. Thank you! ~ Stacey L. Wykoski, Food Service Director

Click on the High School, and then click on Guidance Office. The web page has links to helpful web sites such as Fastweb and FAFSA as well as information on scholarships, transcripts, jobs, and opportunities for students and parents.

COLLEGE APPLICATIONS Just a reminder that college bound seniors should have already submitted their college applications. If not, they need to submit them no later than Christmas break. Students who submit an online application need to have their transcripts sent to the colleges. Students can have their transcripts sent electronically by signing up for the service at www.parchment.com. If they prefer to have the Guidance Office send the transcript, then students should print off a counselor recommendation form to be turned into the Guidance Office. If there is no counselor recommendation form, let your counselor know that you need your transcript sent to the college.

COLLEGE/VOCATIONAL SCHOOL CAMPUS VISITSOne very important factor in the process of selecting a post secondary institution, (and one that is frequently overlooked) is the campus visit. There is no better way to learn about a college, university, or vocational school, the faculty, facilities, atmosphere, student values - - than to visit the campus when classes are in session. It is far better to see through “your own eyes” rather than rely on the word of afriend or the school’s promotional materials. Students are more likely to have a successful experience if they are in an environment compatible with their values and needs.

Students can set up visits on their own by contacting the school’s admissions office or by checking the college’s website. Many schools have set visitation programs that students can access. Juniors and seniors are allowed one day per year to go on a visit that doesn’t count against their attendance. Other visits count as excused absences. Parents need to call the Attendance Office to excuse their students for campus visits.

FAFSA TIPS Seniors and their families who are seeking financial aid for post secondary education need to file a document called the Free Application For Federal Student Aid or FAFSA. Families are encouraged to utilize FAFSA on the WEB to file for financial aid at www.fafsa.ed.gov. To obtain a paper FAFSA you must contact the Federal Student Aid

Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-ASID (1-800-453-3243). You may also download a PDF version of the FAFSA at www.FSAPubs.org or www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov. You may complete the form by hand and mail it to the address provided for processing. The FAFSA should be filed as early as possible and no later than March 1 for full consideration for financial aid programs. To file a FAFSA online, students and parents must create a FSA ID. To do so, go to https://fafsa.ed.gov and click on “FSA ID” at the top. Your FAFSA will be processed faster using an FSA ID than if you mail in a signature page.

With your FSA ID you can:• Sign your FAFSA on the WEB electronically • Review and correct answers on your Student Aid Report (SAR) electronically • Print a copy of your SAR • Electronically sign your promissory notes • Reapply for student aid every year • View information about federal loans and grants you’ve received.

The following are some helpful tips for completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). • Double check to make sure the student's social security number is correct. • Be sure the application is dated for the year the student is attending college,

not the current school year. • Parents should not send tax returns or letters with applications. Letters regarding

unusual circumstances should be sent directly to the college. • Adhere to deadlines. Parents should use estimated income information rather than

missing deadlines. The deadline to be fully considered for Michigan scholarship programs is March 1, 2017. This deadline is a receipt date, not a postmark date. The best advice is to mail your FAFSA close to Feb. 1. For online applications, be sure to submit by March 1.

• Build and maintain a file on financial aid transactions and correspondence. Make copies of everything.

• If you need help, check with the guidance office or the college financial aid office.

FAFSA 4 CASTER Hey parents – check out the FAFSA 4 caster. This is a website that will help you understand financial aid programs and give you a chance to estimate your financial aid eligibility. This is a site especially for parents of students in 9th, 10th, and 11th grades. If you enter information in the 4caster, you will be able to transfer that information over to the actual FAFSA when you’re ready to do so. Here is the website: www.fafsa4caster.ed.gov

SCHOLARSHIPS Don’t forget that the Guidance Office has a Scholarship File that is updated weekly. You can access the Scholarship File on the Guidance Office website or by stopping in the Guidance Office to look at a hard copy. We also recommend that students use one or more than one free scholarship search engines. Four that we recommend are: www.fastweb.com , www.scholarships.com , www.finaid.org , and www.collegeboard.com

TUITION INCENTIVE PLAN Students can qualify for the Tuition Incentive Plan (TIP) if they have or have had Medicaid coverage for 24 months within a 36-consecutive month period. Students could have been sent a qualifying letter as early as 6th grade. If you think your student may qualify for this, you can contact the Tuition Incentive Program by calling 1-888-4-GRANTS. (1-888-447-2687). If your family receives free or reduced lunch, there is a chance you may qualify for this as well.

JUNIOR INTERVIEWS The counselors are in the process of meeting individually with all 11th grade students to discuss their future plans and goals and discuss their course selections for their senior year. Juniors have already received information about researching colleges, planning for their futures, and more in a packet of handouts e-mailed prior to presentations in their November Advisory classes. Juniors are strongly encouraged to research college and other post-secondary options NOW, prior to their senior year. There are many websites available for students to use, including Career Cruising. To access Career Cruising go to www.careercruising.com and enter the username Hudsonville and the password Eagles. Career Cruising will allow you to search for careers, colleges, and even scholarship and financial aid information.

COURSE REGISTRATION Scheduling for next year’s courses will take place through Powerschool and will be available from your home computer. This will allow parents and students time to sit down and register for classes together. There will also be some times available for students to register here at school. Students will be given instructions on how to register through Powerschool. More information on the exact dates for registration to come.

Kids’ Food Basket

High School Wide Community Service Project - Thursday, Dec. 15

During our Advisory Period on Thursday, Dec. 15, our entire high school will be working on a service project helping out Kids’ Food Basket.

Kids’ Food Basket is a non-profit organization that provides sack suppers to students in need. These sack suppers help students have food to eat who might otherwise go hungry. In Kent, Ottawa and Muskegon Counties, Kids’ Food Basket serves approximately 7, 500 students per day.

This year, we will be packing “Supper Packs” which are non-perishable items that are put into each Sack Supper.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! In order to complete this project we are looking for donations of the following items:

• 100% Fruit Juice Box (less than 7 ounces) • Individual Fruit Cup or Pouch • Granola Bar • Small Raisin Box • Quart Size Zipper Lock Bag

All donations can be dropped off at the Main Campus or Freshman Campus offices.

THANKS for being a part of our community service project. We couldn’t do it without your support.
