Greetings Parents, Guardians and Students, As we move from fall to winter, and from first semester to second, I am reminded once again how quickly a
school year passes. With that realization also comes the recognition of how change is the one thing that
none of us can escape. Every aspect of life is influenced by a continual cycle of change. Education is
certainly an area where few things stay the same for very long.
One change that you may begin to notice is seeing fewer grades in Infinite Campus. Students will be given
more opportunity to practice the required learning through homework as well as a variety of other
assignments without being assigned a grade to that practice. Grades will be given for work that is evaluative
in nature, such as exams or projects, rather than work that is designed to practice the desired learning.
More information will be coming forward as we become more standards focused in our learning and hence
in our methods of evaluation. I just want you to have a heads up and not to worry if you are noticing fewer
things being graded in your son or daughter’s classes.
I would like to take this opportunity as we approach a new year, to thank all of you for the tremendous
support that you offer our school on a daily basis. It would be difficult to find a community where people are
more willing to work side by side with their schools. We are very proud of our High School, good work
happens here, and much of that success goes back to you, the parents of our students, many thanks.
May the new year ahead be one that is filled with peace and happy days… Go Cardinals!
Sincerely,
Rebecca R. Davis Principal

TWO-HOUR DELAY
Providing safe transportation for our student population is a top priority. Wisconsin weather is notorious for its instant changes and erratic behavior.
This year the Chippewa Falls Area Unified School
District in collaboration with McDonell Area
Catholic Schools and Chippewa Yellow Bus
Company will be utilizing a TWO-HOUR DELAY
when inclement weather necessitates safer travel
time.
By school district policy, inclement weather
decisions must be
made no later than
6:00 a.m.
We plan to
communicate any
weather related
decisions in the
following ways:
• Local TV, radio, news print
• District website, district social media
(Facebook, Twitter)
• Campus messenger notifications, including
family email, voicemails, text messages
• District Mobile App alerts
Because of the unique nature of a TWO-HOUR
DELAY, the following adjustments to student
schedules will be implemented:
• Busses would run two hours behind their
normal schedule
• Buildings would begin sessions two hours
behind normal start time
• No breakfast would be served
• School lunch would be at or around the
normal time
• AM BB4C would be cancelled
• Head Start would be cancelled for the entire
day
As we all know, Wisconsin weather conditions can
change rapidly. In the rare event that a TWO-
HOUR DELAY must switch to a FULL DAY, the
decision will be made no later than 8:00 a.m.
If you have questions or concerns, please feel free
to contact Chad Trowbridge at (715) 726-2417.
NURSES’ CORNER
Preventing the Flu
What can you do to prevent the flu? The first step
is to get a flu vaccination. The Centers for Disease
Control now recommends flu shots for almost all
people from the age of 6 months on. The CDC
recommends getting your flu shot as soon as the
vaccine becomes available. The peak season for
flu season is most often in January or February.
The other way to prevent the flu is to practice
every-day good health habits.
• Cover your cough or sneeze. Preferably do this
with a tissue that you then throw in a trashcan.
Next best is covering your cough with your inner
elbow.
• Avoid touching your own eyes, nose, or mouth
• Don’t share food or drinks
• Wash your hands frequently using soap and
water or alcohol based hand sanitizer
• Avoid contact with sick people
• If you get the flu, stay home so you don’t share
your virus with others
• Always contact your doctor’s office if you have
questions or concerns regarding you or your child
If you do get sick, stay home, get lots of rest, and
drink plenty of fluids. There are some over-the-
counter medicines you can take to help you feel
better at home. Tylenol and ibuprofen can help with
fevers; please remember that children should not
take aspirin, particularly if they have flu-like
symptoms. Antihistamines and decongestants can
help with nasal drainage or stuffiness.
How can you tell the difference between a cold
and the flu? Because colds and flu share many
symptoms, it can be difficult (or even impossible) to
tell the difference between them based on
symptoms alone. Special tests that usually must be
done within the first few days of illness can be
carried out, when needed to tell if a person has the
flu. The flu and the common cold are both
respiratory illnesses but they are caused by
different viruses. In general, the flu is worse than
the common cold, and symptoms such as fever,
body aches, extreme tiredness, and dry cough are
more common and intense. Colds are usually
milder than the flu. People with colds are more
likely to have a runny or stuffy nose.

STUDENT’S SPINES
Healthier for 2014 – Information brought to you by our Building Wellness Team
Trends these days
are towards
proactive care for
everything. Whether
we are talking
exercise, eating
healthy, vitamins, or
brushing your teeth
we all see the
benefits of these
habits. This December, Chi- Hi hosted Dr. Lona
Cook and Dr. Ashley Anderson for a wellness
presentation on keeping student's spines and
posture healthy as they develop! With heavy
backpacks, stress, and many other factors, Dr.
Lona and Dr. Ashley are excited to help students
recognize the importance of good posture and how
their spine and nerves affect their whole life. The
doctors brought an EMG static scanner
(electromyogram - it detects abnormal muscle
electrical activity) that monitors how much stress is
showing up in the spinal muscles indicating issues
if they are present. Students had a chance to view
their scan and learn about prevention for their
spinal health.

TTHHEE CCAARRDDIINNAALL BBEEAATT A Message from Our School Resource Officer
Dangerous weapons are not allowed on or within
1,000 feet of school grounds.
What is considered a dangerous weapon? The
Wisconsin state statutes define a “dangerous
weapon” as any firearm or device, designed as a
weapon and capable of producing death or great
bodily harm. This definition encompasses any
firearm or sharp edged instrument, such as knives,
arrows, throwing stars, an axe or a spear,
electronic weapons, and bb or pellet guns are also
included.
Why do we have this law? This law is in place to
protect everyone, so that dangerous weapons are
not readily available, should an argument occur on
school grounds. Making all school grounds a
weapon free zone helps to keep us all safe.
Please remind your driving-aged children,
especially the ones who hunt, to have all
dangerous weapons removed from vehicles when
they are going to school.
The safety and security of the students and staff at
our schools is my main concern. Please feel free
to call me with any questions or concerns.
