Volume 13, Issue 16 Friday, October 26, 2018 Dear School Family,
Welcome to Term 4 and
especially to our new families
who will be joining us for next
year and will now be
receiving the fortnightly
newsletter.
Term 3 ended really well with the Year 9
students all returning safely on the last Friday
from their adventure camp. It was a great
experience and a highlight of the challenge and
resilience building focus we have for our Year 9
students. The camp involved bushwalking,
camping and kayaking.
It was also really great to be able to return safely
to Adelaide on the first Monday of the holidays
with the team that were on the Missions Trip in
Cambodia. I have a great sense of relief when all
our students are safely back.
I trust the holiday break was relaxing and
refreshing and for our Year 12 students that it
was a very productive time.
Year 12
Our Year 12 students finish their formal lessons
this week. The last Friday is a special day as we
have a breakfast for all the Year 12 students and
their families. This is provided by our Parents
and Friends and we are greatly appreciative of
their wonderful support. The breakfast is followed
by the final Year 12 Assembly which is a
wonderful time of celebration. We laugh together
and there are also some tears as we realise their
time with us is coming to an end. I find it very
moving to see photos of the Year 12 students as
little kids and then the contrast to how they look
now. The Year 12 students will have a week of
study leave before their externally set written
SACE Examinations begin. The examinations
are spread over 3 weeks. Not all Year 12
subjects have external examinations and as such
some of our students who have completed all
their work will now be finished. Please pray for
our Year 12 students throughout this time that
they would remain focused, be able to complete
their work and study well in preparation for their
examinations. The two final events for the Year
12 students will be the Year 12 Formal and our
Presentation Night.
As the Year 12’s finish it also gives the Year 11’s
the opportunity to step up and be the senior
students in the life of the school. It will also be
exciting to have the Year 11’s lead us in
Assemblies for the remainder of the year.
Presentation Night
A reminder that our final night for the year is
Presentation Night on Thursday, 13 December.
This is the highlight in the life of the school and it
is an expectation that all students attend. It is
held in the week after the middle school
examinations. This enables the staff and
students involved in the many musical and dance
performances time to finalise their items without
the pressure of examinations and reports.
Awards Assembly
I was also greatly encouraged by the
achievements of our students in the last term
and this was recognised at our Awards
Assembly. Students were presented with Awards
for Future Problem Solving, achievements in
National Competitions for English, and
Geography, Excellence in Attitude and
Excellence in Academic Achievement Awards.
We had a really good number of students receive
their Character, Service and Influence Award
(CSI) at the Bronze, Silver and Gold Level.

It is really wonderful to be able to celebrate the achievements of our
students as a community.
School Family News
A key scripture for this year has been Romans 12:15. “Rejoice with
those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn”. Sadly this scripture
has been very true for the Temple Community this week as one of our
parents Marco Dosljak was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident.
He has 3 great sons Lewis Yr 11, Oliver Yr 9 and Thomas Yr 7 and a
wonderful wife Brandi. Our love, thoughts and prayers continue to be
with the family. Another key scripture for this year has been from
Revelation 21:4. It reminds us of the hope we have in God and that
one day “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no
more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone
forever”. For now very sadly we have to live with the reality of what
has happened. Please continue to pray for the family and as a
community we will continue to support and journey through life with
them.

Cambodia Mission Trip
While we have been sending teams to
Cambodia for many years now, it is an
absolute delight to return each year to visit
projects that we have developed a significant
on-going relationship with. The schools and
organisations we connect with are working
with children who are growing up in extremely
poor communities, or have been victims of
exploitation. In visiting each year we get to
see the exciting development that is taking
place, and are continually inspired by the
people who are working incredibly hard to
support individuals, families and communities
affected by poverty and injustice. We also
have the privilege of spending time with
Cambodian young people who experience joy
in spite of their circumstance, who have a
thirst for education and who end up being a
real blessing to us.
This year’s team was the biggest we have
ever sent to Cambodia, consisting of 24
students and 6 adults. From the moment we
arrived in Phnom Penh the team fully
embraced the experience – running activities,
connecting with kids, experimenting with food
and engaging with Cambodia’s history and
culture. They adopted a posture of learning,
brought life and love into every context we
entered and were noticeably moved by the
people they met and the things they
experienced. We saw God at work, and his
Kingdom breaking out in places where
violence, corruption and injustice have held
sway for many years. As we reflected on our
experiences at the end of our trip, it was clear
that it had been transformative, significantly
shaping their understanding of God, their
understanding of themselves and what it
means to be part of God’s redemptive mission
in the world.
Our trip took us to Phnom Penh, the rural
village of Takeo and finally up to Siem Reap.
In the process we spend time with many
different organisations: Cambodia Care
Centre, Andong Village, Sunshine Cambodia,
People’s Improvement Organisation, Destiny
Rescue, AusCam Freedom Project, A Heart
for Wisdom School, Harvest House, People
for Care and Learning and Reaksa Himm. We
were able to donate financially to each of
these organisations due to the fundraising
efforts of our team and the wider Temple
community. It was also wonderful to be able to
deliver much needed medical supplies,
technology and teaching resources to a
number of the schools. We certainly hope to
continue to deepen the relationships that we
have into the future, and we look forward to
taking many more students to these very
special places for many years to come.
Our 2018 team have come home with many
stories, some of which are difficult to articulate
for family and friends who haven’t
experienced it first-hand. Here’s a small
sample of their reflections on the trip:
My experiences in Cambodia were amazing,
and they taught me a lot. I was able to interact
with different people from different
backgrounds and learn more about their lives.
I really enjoyed the contrast that Cambodia
has from Australia, and coming back has
been a little bit of a shock. I think that my
experiences in Cambodia have allowed me to
see the world differently and has changed my
heart and caused me to strengthen my
relationship with God.
Chelsea Ryan
It was all incredible and inspiring to be
surrounded by families, teachers and children
who are able to find full, lasting joy in God and
who have their hearts set on bringing him
glory without the help of worldly things.
Everyone we met in Cambodia has the
mindset that “God is their provider” and it all
became very real to hear their stories.
Briana Grosvenor
The people in Cambodia are so happy with
the little that they have and they are so loving.
The best part was how much love they have
to spare. The kids were so happy to see us
and so affectionate which made the
experience so much more rewarding. Seeing
the smiles that we could put on people and
the ones that were already there was
definitely a highlight.
Gabe Oakey-Barry
Travelling to Cambodia was an extremely
enjoyable but eye opening experience, for me
and many others. Going overseas for the first
time, it was equal parts exciting and
nerve wracking travelling into a completely
different and much more under privileged
place, but grew on me immediately and more
so as we explored the countries beautiful
culture and community. I saw things that
moved and upset me, but also countless
times that seeing Gods work in the places we
visited brought us all joy. Every person we
met and place we visited was a blessing to
experience, and am awfully grateful that I
could be a part of a trip that made so many
memories and motivated us to change our
perspectives and do more meaningful work.

SACSA Volleyball
On Wednesday, 17 October, Temple Christian College Year 10 and
11 students took part in the SACSA Volleyball Carnival held at ARC
Campbelltown. Then on Friday, 19 October, it was the Year 8 and 9’s
turn to compete!
Our Opens teams consisted of Year 10 and 11 students as our Year
12 students are busy finishing assignments and studying for their final
exams. The students who competed were encouraging, enthusiastic
and provided good competition for the days play.
The Year 10 and 11 girls started strongly and continued to play
competitive games throughout the day. For majority of the day they
were undefeated which was a fantastic effort. The girls unfortunately
lost one game… however, this did not stop them from making it into
the grand final. This was a very close and tense game! Unluckily, the
girls were not able to secure a win. They are to be congratulated for
placing 2nd overall. The year 10 and 11 boys also brought strong
competition to the carnival. The first team were determined and
competitive but were unable to get a win until late in the day. They are
to be commended on their efforts. The second team were undefeated
for the day and displayed great sportsmanship and teamwork.
Congratulations on finishing 1st overall!
Both Year 8/9 girls and boys teams played a number of games
throughout the day, showcasing their skills on the volleyball court.
With competitive teams, the boy’s team placed 3rd and the girl’s team
placed 6th!
Well done to all of the students who participated on Wednesday or
Friday to compete.
Thank you to the students who came along to help with scoring and
coaching.

National Finals Future Problem Solving Competition
On Friday, October 19, a small group of students and accompanying
teachers woke up early to travel to Melbourne to participate in the
2018 Future Problem Solving National Finals. Along with other
students from around Australia, Maria Cho, Jedd Ryan, Ben Veitch,
Chengcheng Zheng, and Samuel Wabnitz were challenged to solve
possible future problems around cloud storage.
The finals commenced with a celebration dinner at Monash University,
where students could meet other participants and learn more about
the Future Problem Solving organisation. Prior to this students spent
the day in Melbourne, visiting the Aquarium and other sites around the
Melbourne CBD.
On Saturday, students travelled to Nossal High School for the day of
competition. The year 8 team competed in the middle division of the
Global Issues Problem Solving, collaboratively brainstorming possible
problems and solutions in response to a given future scene. Using the
design thinking process, students devised an action plan based on
their best solution idea. The group then had to design a creative
presentation that clearly showed their Action Plan and how their
solution would solve the problem. Whilst the group did not place, they
are to be commended on their outstanding efforts which place them in
the top 10% of all competing schools nationwide. Samuel Wabnitz
travelled with the team as a reserve and he had the opportunity to
participate in solving the problem as well. He was placed in a team
with reserve students from other competing schools to work on the
same problem. Samuel’s team were placed third, a great achievement
for the team and Samuel. Participating in the finals was a wonderful
learning experience for all involved and the students are looking
forward to applying the skills they have learnt to participate in the
2019 Future Problem Solving Competition.
