NIASA is the academic unit of COA, and
operates from CDSA Campus, Pune. I was
involved in NIASA from Day 1, from basic
office setup, to handling most aspects of
administration and management of various
NIASA’s various activities and events. It was
a tremendous learning experience with
COA’s academic arm, interacting with a
multitude of institutes, academicians and
architectural professionals. I leave after
almost 2½ years to involve myself primarily

• This challenge has been overcome by an imageable form that strikes the viewer from any
side, giving a specific identity to the project.

SALIENT DESIGN FEATURES:
• The alignment of the DP road has been
changed to make the plot shape more workable.
• In some options the existing water channel was diverted; in others, it was used as a design element .
• A plot of 1 acre had been provided with flats < 1500 sq.ft. and shopping of 2000 sq.ft. to
avail 80 IB facility.
• The Layout included Super HIG towers, MIG
Apartment Blocks, Row Houses, luxurious Bungalow Plots, EWS Housing, Club House,
Comm. Complex, Streetside Shopping
• Neighborhood planning concepts were part
of each planning block.
• Environmental consciousness was
appropriately incorporated in the design layout, without hampering the maximum salability of the design project.
• Appropriate Vaastu considerations of the clients have been incorporated in each
individual plot.

The natural drainage stream on site, is a prominent natural asset that can be developed to become the
project’s central asset for the residents, through sensitive landscape proposals that heightens the project’s
aesthetic appeal while providing an active-passive recreation corridor.

Composite Food Court Plan
Swabhumi is a prestigious public project of Bengal Ambuja Group. On the EM Bypass,
near SaltLake, it a shopping & cultural complex, ak in to the famous Dilli Haat. I was
involved in the overall master planning stage, and specifically, the design of Food Court.

I was involved in Swabhumi during my training period there. Luckily, even as a trainee, I was involved in
many design details - the intricate flooring of the
courtyard, the lighting fixtures, etc. Site supervision
of surface drainage was a bit tricky, as it is on a hillock
& has many levels.

The Client wanted a home with a bold
modern statement in form and elevation.
For this purpose, more than 35 models
(paper, thermocol and AotoCAD / 3D-Max
3D) were generated to evolve the perfect
form and function. Exposed Concrete was
used as the main material vocabulary.

International centre ((IIC) in purpose, that
design-wise took a twist on Bengal’s traditional
building form, the Bengal Arch, in a tall modern

Thesis: “HumanisingAccess in Inter-Modal Transit Interchange Precincts”
Aim: To create a better public realm for urban citizens in an area that is super-charged w ith activity, in a city that tends to exclude rather than include its differing denizens. The thesis takes up the
issue of disability as a social phenomenon and sees how sensitive designing at an urban level can probably change societal attitudes and ultimately create a better, more accessible place for
everybody.
Research Objectives: To study the Social Model of Disability and its effect on Urban Design; To study how access, wayfinding and cognition, that is important to place-making, is dependant on various levels of sensory perceptions of special user-groups; To study the concept of Universal Design and Inclusive Environment in the Indian context; To evolve a set of guidelines for design and
development of such areas
Demonstration Area: Hazrat Nizamuddin Railw ay Station & Sarai Kale Khan ISBT in the East Nizamuddin, Sarai Kale Khan Area, New Delhi
Studio Projects
1. Urban Renewal of DIZ Area, New Delhi (3rd Semester; Aug-Dec 2004)
The Semester analysed the area concerned in respect of Urban Infrastructure (Water supply, Drainage, Sew erage, Garbage Disposal, Electricity, capacity, etc.), Morphological issues (including
Historical references, Open space netw orking, GolMarket area as an area of special concern, etc.), Activity Pattern, and such. Generic and site level issues w ere generated that led to the making
of structure plans (in pairs) that attempted to reinstate the importance of this character district at the city level, especially w ith CP being in such proximity, and the coming of Metro. The Semester
culminated in detailed design demonstrations at the individual level. The Gol Market area w as handled individually for this purpose.
Urban Design Tools used: Infill Development, Redensif ication, Redevelopment, Conservative Surgery, Restructuring, Revitalisation, Development Injection
2. Greenfield Development at Betim, Near Panaji, Goa (2nd Semester; Jan-May 2004)
Goa w as chosen for greenfield development in an ecologically sensitive and highly popular tourist state. Panjim / Panaji and Goa state, w ere analytically studied including upcoming development
schemes, planning, history, morphology, infrastructure, socio-cultural patterns, its architecture, and so on. Structure Plans of three different areas near Panjim, w ere drawn out in a group.
Ultimately detailed design demonstrations at the individual level w ere undertaken. Betimw as chosen as an active riverfront fronting Panjimand a candidate for the Goa International Film Festival.

3. Lajpat Nagar Central Market, New Delhi (1st Semester; Aug-Dec 2003)
The methodology for analysing an urban precinct w as instrumental in guiding an in-depth study of Lajpat Nagar, including Morphological Issues, Urban Infrastructure, Human Netw orking (how social groups interact and are mutually inter-dependant), over 3 months that led to the Urban Design Action (Renew al Design) of the ever-popular market, in a group of four.

(Part of the DDA Design Competition – Bharat VandanaPrangan)
-Complete design from site planning to detailed designing
DDA had launched an Architectural Design Competition called Bharat VandanaPrangan, in the
newly developing DwarkaSector of the National Capital territory of Delhi. The main core of the
design program was to be a Bharat Bhavan, alongside an outdoor stadium, OAT, Banquet hall,
Club, public parks, etc. that cater to the city and the surrounding citizens as well. The Thesis
mainly attempted to detail out the Bharat Bhavan complex, supported with conceptual level development of the other facilities & landscaping. In doing so, the Thesis focused on the designing
of an important public building in a large site in the context of one of the historically important cities
of India.
