Darwin Festival is an 18-day feast of music, theatre, dance, cabaret and more in our spectacular and most sophisticated tropical city of Darwin. If you are at all overwhelmed by the 85 events in our program – remember that our two festival hubs, Festival Park in the heart of the city and George’s Green at the Botanic Gardens offer one stop shops to soak up the dry season festival atmosphere. At both sites you’ll find locals and visitors enjoying the free nightly entertainment and a great selection of fantastic food from some of Darwin’s finest restaurants and a cheeky cocktail or six.Here are some of my tips on how to get amongst it... If you’re a cheapskate and after a free ride this Festival then George’s Green is your entertainment oasis for the whole family. Nestled cosily in Darwin’s lush George Brown Botanic Gardens, it’s the place to come for free nightly music and a huge (and free!) African celebration on Friday 23 Aug, when Keyim Ba’s African Caravan takes over the site with high-energy drumming and dancing. Look up in our purpose-built treehouse and check out our resident Treejay, spinning discs late into the night for your dry season pleasure.For our younger audiences George’s Green is also the site for our annual People’s Choice Teddy Bear’s Picnic. For one night only Shaun Tan’s The

Arrival at the special family friendly time of 7.30pm Friday 23 August; and the talk of the town will be Tradewinds’ free walking-on-water visual spectacular at the Waterfront on the last weekend of the Festival. Perfect for the whole family.At the Paris end of D-town you’ll find Festival Park - a playground of artistic activity during this year’s Festival. The Lighthouse, our now famous tropical big top, returns to take pride of place under the stars. Spice up your evening with some sweet sounds, rocking grooves or cabaret with a twist. These are my Lighthouse hits for 2013 – Taylor Mac from NY; local heroes Green Stone Garden with the Darwin Symphony Orchestra; jazzy crooner Martin Martini. Then party on at the Festival Club with headliners Brow Horn Orchestra, the place to be for all those late-night shenanigans your buddies are always raving about. This year’s program for nightowls features bands, cabaret artists, DJs and more. If you’re in the mood for music, Festival Park provides the perfect stage, with a free nightly program of DJ sets and chilled-out tunes from local faves and Festival stars. C’mon you know you want to… we’ll all sleep in September!With over 85 events and 746 artists there’s a tonne of fun and family friendly things to do during the Festival. Gennie Cox’s philosophy has served her well for almost 2 decades in real estate, and it is her unique perspective that keeps her clients coming back time and again. Like many women, for Sue Hyde the prospect of an early retirement after a successful career with the NT government, seemed like too little too soon. Kylie Payne is one of the fortunate few who always knew her passion. As a child she wanted to be a hairdresser and this dream only got stronger as she got older. She did work experience in hairdressing through years 10 and 11 in high school and was thrilled to start her apprenticeship at last at 16 at the highly regarded Taylor Weir School of Hairdressing in Perth.After completing her apprenticeship at 19 she moved to Darwin for love and spent the next few years working in local salons. This gave Kylie a good sense of the Darwin community and over time she established a loyal client base. The decision to start her own salon came effortlessly and seemed to her like the next logical step in her career. “I’m always striving for more and I just felt I could achieve much more if I was working for myself. I’m really passionate about hairdressing and having my own salon gives me the perfect outlet to express my creativity and do what I love.”This year marks Kylie’s tenth year in the industry and she is enjoying it today as much as the first day she started. “I love my job. Chris Kanochkin can’t remember exactly the moment she decided to go out on her own, but she does remember that it was a natural progression. After hairdressing for 15 years, and learning under some very talented and supportive mentors, Chris realised she had the knowledge and skills to open her own salon. So with the few thousand dollars she’d saved, she opened Vanity Hair in a small shop in Wagaman. Two weeks later she found out her first baby was on the way, which of course added to the challenges of a new business owner. But Chris did not miss a beat, and in the first 2 years the business was thriving and she relocated to the current location in Parap Village. Vanity Hair has enjoyed more than a decade of success, a large part of which must be down to Chris’ humility and professionalism. Initially Chris had one part timer on staff to assist her, she now has a team of 6 and above all else, is most proud of her staff. “You’re always learning in this industry and I’ve never gotten bored. We have older more experienced staff that are highly skilled and younger staff bringing new innovative approaches to hair

design. We share our knowledge with each other, and most importantly we don’t compromise on hair care. The seeds of Dr Van Kim Nguyen’s medical career were sown early in her life. As a child she was raised to appreciate education and to understand the importance of helping other people. Kerry Collins started her very first business as a 21 year old running a ceramics studio. Teaching and creating was more than satisfying for the first couple of decades but as her children got older, and life changed, she felt she needed a change. “Friends of ours wanted to get into a furniture business of some kind, and as luck would have it, there was one for sale – Designer Cane in McMinn Street. It had been going for about 20 years and we really had no idea about the business – we were thrown in at the deep end.”Of course any new business is sink or swim and in Kerry’s case, she definitely found her feet and the furniture business was a great success.It wasn’t long before ambition took over though and Kerry was ready for the next challenge. In 2006 she opened Infidelity Clothing and Accessories in Smith St Mall. “I loved the buying and the selling in the furniture shop but I felt like I needed a bit of a faster pace in my life. We also stock water features, lava stone statues and colourful Balinese flags for the garden as well as locally grown plants, and we have a lot of pots and bowls and general outdoor products. Our most popular item recently has been our recycled boat wood furniture. It’s been an absolute hit and we can barely keep up with the demand.”Just in case things weren’t interesting enough, Kerry decided a third store was needed and in September 2012, Infidelity Parap was launched. This shared belief that no-one should be left behind is what encouraged me to put myself forward to represent Darwin and Palmerston in the 2013 federal election.I see a need for a hospital at Palmerston to serve the local residents and the rural area, giving people better access to health care closer to home. We have fought for the $70 million Federal contribution to a Hospital which is long overdue and has been ignored by my opponent.Kevin Rudd and I both believe that Darwin should be developed as a gateway to Asia. Both of us share an international perspective. Kevin Rudd’s experience is well known while mine takes in service to Australia as a Defence Force officer in East Timor and work internationally including in Southern Afghanistan. In East Timor I produced a TV documentary, “A Debt of Honour,” which was shown on the Nine Network and celebrated the bravery and sacrifice of our WW2 diggers

and the Timorese people. Also during that time I set up a volunteer charity called “Life, Love and Health”. It’s still going strong and provides for schools, medical care and water supplies. After working as a military officer and development worker in dangerous parts of the world I am a great believer in getting things done, no matter how difficult it might be.I believe we all should acknowledge diggers who fought in Afghanistan, Timor, Iraq, Rwanda, Somalia and elsewhere. That’s the reason I am campaigning for their recognition at the Cenotaph in Darwin. In 2008, I established the federally funded Remote Area Health Corps in Darwin to provide health professionals to the Top End and now volunteer with the St Vincent de Paul Society. As all fair minded people agree, Vinnies provides help to people who have been left behind. I strongly believe that Territorian kids

should not be left behind so I support the federal government’s offer to the Territory Government of funding for Better Schools. It is important that our kids can benefit from more assistance in the classroom, smaller class sizes and better facilities. It’s also why I support other measures to lighten the load on families through initiatives such as the School Kids Bonus.The National Broadband Network (NBN) will bring superfast access to the internet and is crucial to setting up local businesses and households for the future which the Asian Century presents for Darwin and Palmerston. Only Labor will ensure all businesses and households will benefit from it.That’s my pledge to Top End voters if I am honoured to represent them in the next Federal Parliament as a part of Kevin Rudd’s team - just in time for the birth of our second child, due in November, to join my beautiful wife Kate and our young daughter, Sally.

“Anatye II”An exhibition by award winning Aboriginal artist Margaret Loy Pula will be officially opened by the Minister for Arts and Museums at Muk Muk Fine Art Gallery on Saturday 10th August. Margaret Loy Pula hails from an incredibly distinguished artistic family. She is the daughter of Utopian artist Kathleen Petyarre. Her aunties are the well known Petyarre sisters all of whom are established artists.Since her initial launch in 2010, Margaret has reached national acclaim. In the last 36 months she has been a finalist in more than 30 art prizes, including the 2011 Wynne and 2012 Sulman Art Prizes at the Art Gallery of NSW.‘Anatye II’ is a culmination of spectacular works that have been selected as finalists and displayed in prestigious Australian Art Awards over the last 24 months. The signature piece in the exhibition is the 2012 Wynne Prize entry which was recognised as one of the top five works in the exhibition with its enchanting dark colour palate.Margaret’s depiction of ‘Anatye’, or Bush Potato, has entranced the Australian contemporary art scene with an almost unreal style and intricate detailing that conveys the power of the Anmatyerre country.The exhibition will officially open at Muk Muk Fine Art Gallery, 51 Smith St on Saturday 10th August at 12 noon with Margaret Loy Pula in attendance. The exhibition runs until the 24th August.

“A Town Like Paris”The exhibition ‘A Town Like Paris’ by contemporary artist Bernard Ollis will open at Muk Muk Fine Art in Smith St on Friday 30th August. A play on words, the exhibition has been titled after the 1950 novel and movie by Neville Schute - ‘A Town Like Alice’.With floating figures, vivid colours and undulating structures Bernard aims to visually engage the viewer to consider themselves in that very moment, an evocation of Paris rather than a picture perfect postcard view. Bernard Ollis has had a constant stream of successful solo exhibitions and has been acquired in collections such as the National Art Gallery of Australia and the Museum and Art Gallery of the NT. Throughout his career Bernard has been selected several times for prestigious Australian Art Prizes including the Sulman Art Prize (2011 & 2003) and the Dobell Art Prize (2002, 2001 & 2000). ‘A Town Like Paris’, opens at Muk Muk Fine Art Gallery, 51 Smith St on Friday 30th August at 6pm with Bernard Ollis in attendance. Bernard Ollis will also conduct an insightful floor talk discussing his practice and inspiration in the gallery on Saturday 31st August at 11am.The exhibition will be on display until Saturday 28th September. When I first came to the Territory in the early 80s, most people moved away from Darwin when they retired. Now Darwin seems to be full of people who have already retired or who are about to retire and they plan to stay here and enjoy all the benefits that Darwin has to offer. These people have profoundly different expectations from those of their grandparents.I remember my grandparents with great fondness but life for elderly folk was very different then. My grandmother had her white hair pulled back into a neat bun, wore sensible black-granny-shoes and dull pinnies. She seemed to spend a lot of time putting washing on the line and peeling potatoes at the sink. My grandfather pottered in the allotment, wore braces and smoked a pipe. Like other people of their age, they were called old age pensioners. They rarely went out and it was a special treat when they bought fish and chips wrapped in newspaper. I believe they were happy and content but looking back now, their lives do not appear to have been much fun. People are moving towards their

senior years today with very different attitudes and expectations from those of the previous generation. Generally speaking they are healthier, better educated and more financially secure. The people I know in this group have a range of plans for their senior years. Most are positive about the future and find it hard to believe that they are now considered to be ‘seniors’. Some love their work and hope that they will be able to keep working for many years to come. Others cannot wait to retire and have more leisure time. They have a pile of books they want to read, new recipes they want to try or they want to spend more time with their grandchildren. Some want to pursue educational goals and some want to ‘start a career’ and begin working in a new environment. Many seem keen to play an active role in the community and offer their services as volunteers. Lots want to travel and experience new horizons. They intend to tick off the items on their bucket lists. Whatever their plans, they want to lead satisfying lives and they certainly intend to enjoy themselves. It is hard to imagine that they will blend

quietly into the background. Being baby boomers, they are used to facilitating change and they are likely to want to participate in decisions that may affect their lives. They will want to be seen and heard. The Council on the Ageing (COTA) NT and Charles Darwin University are undertaking a survey to find out about the needs of seniors in order to ensure that there are appropriate policies and programs in place to cater for these people. If you are a resident of the Northern Territory and aged over 50, or aged 45 and Indigenous, the people conducting the survey want to hear from you. What is bullying?Bullying is defined by NT WorkSafe as repeated unreasonable behaviour directed toward an employee or group of employees that creates a risk to health and safety.

Bullying can include behaviour such as: • verbal or physical abuse; • excluding or isolating behaviour; • psychological harassment; intimidation; • assigning meaningless tasks unrelated to the

job; • giving employees impossible assignments; • deliberately changing work rosters to

inconvenience particular employees; and• deliberately withholding information that is

vital for effective work performance.Some types of workplace bullying are criminal offences. If you have experienced violence, assault and stalking you can report it directly to the police. Bullying may also be unlawful under other legislation such as the Anti-Discrimination Act (NT) if it is racially and/or gender motivated.

What is NOT workplace bullying but may still feel unfair:• reasonable actions such as transferring,

demoting, disciplinary action, counselling on performance or retrenchment;

• occasional one-off incidents in the workplace for example if someone loses their temper or shouts or swears

What to do if you’re being bulliedYou are not alone! More than one in five people are bullied at work and recent research into bullying of staff at schools noted that in some industries such as health, welfare, government services and education the figure is much higher ranging from anywhere between 25% and 95%.1

In the NT there is a very common workplace culture of telling people to ‘toughen up’ if they complain of being bullied. If you are the victim of bullying don’t let this deter you from seeking assistance from your employer. Everyone has the right to work in an environment that is free from bullying and harassment and bullying can constitute a breach of the Work Health and Safety Act (NT) (WHS Act). The WHS Act imposes duties on employers, employees and others to ensure a safe workplace. If you are being bullied you should report it via your workplace complaint procedures - this can be to your employer, a supervisor/manager, a health and safety representative or union delegate. Many small businesses have started at the kitchen table, and NT Phone repairs is one of the few success stories that grew beyond the kitchen and into the CBD – inside the post office complex in Cavenagh street to be precise.

When Adelaide born friends Tim McDonald and Nat Brice both smashed their phones, their natural instincts for technology took over and they successfully completed the first of what would eventually become thousands of repairs to mobile phones. Word spread fast and before they knew it they had built a huge business and discovered an urgent need for a service that had not yet been supplied. “Previously phones were cheap and easily replaceable but now people are carrying around more than a thousand dollars worth of technology in their pockets but we have so

Between us we have fixed over 5000 phones in the last 2 and a half years and our business is growing rapidly every day.”They discovered that a lot of people were still sending their mobile phones interstate for lack of a local repairer, and once they realised there was a massive market for their service in Darwin, they quickly moved from a home based business to the Cavenagh Street store. VOLUNTEERSPLAYING A CRUCIAL PART IN EVENTSAs we move into the ‘Dry Season’ and enjoy the many events and festivals that we celebrate in the Northern Territory, it is valuable to reflect on the part volunteers play in these dynamic activities. All festivities and events are built on the support of volunteers. This is a magnificent labour of love, so we can all enjoy the fruits of our arts and cultural pursuits. The economic return to our economy would be far less without this non-monetary contribution of volunteers’ gifts of their time, talents and energy and going that extra mile to make our events a success. The activities and events that we enjoy, ranging from cultural celebrations such as the recent Italian Festival and the Greek Glenti through to spectacular events such as the upcoming Darwin Symphony Orchestra performance in the desert at Uluru, are all supported by volunteers. They are people on committees, making phone calls, writing

funding submissions, training others, collecting equipment, learning skills, creating data bases and responding to emails. Their work is often invisible and unsung – but without their efforts the events and exhibitions we enjoy just would not come to fruition. Then there are the visible volunteers – the ones handing out information, serving food on stalls, supporting people with disabilities to get to venues, the ones who hand out a microphone at the public forums or who staff a community exhibit at a festival venue. So, when you are out enjoying cultural pursuits, take time to say thank you to the volunteers It is the volunteer’s contribution that is the difference that truly changes our world into being a more celebratory, culturally rich and artistically inspiring place to be. Wow what a situation! So what actually happened in this particular case was that the person who had first indicated that they were leaving, did not leave as they knew there was a new person to take their place.What they did was to claim that their termination was a premeditated termination (remember that the employer did not have a signed resignation from the employee and had taken it in good faith that the existing employee was going to resign soon). The employee consequently won their case. The employer had to payout a significant sum of money, while at the same time had an obligation regarding the new person as they had already signed their employment contract.So what is interesting in this case is that the employer was caught in a tough place. They had acted too quickly and had a commitment to both employees. No matter what they did, both employees, through their signed employment contracts were within their rights to contest the situation.You may need to keep in mind employers that at any time you decide to employ someone who insists that they have their employment contract signed before the actual commencement date,

you the employer are fully obliged within the Act to fulfil that contract even if the employee decides that they no longer want the job. However it is fine for them to just advise they are not starting with you but it is not the same for the employer. Be sure as to what you are agreeing to in both cases.I am writing this article from Las Vegas Nevada this month; the employees here don’t get as good a deal as in Australia. Take for example the 4th of July Public Holiday. Employees can either work or not work and if they choose the later then they do not get paid for that day. The work ethic here is amazing, service is friendly and people enjoy to work.

and spicy Sri Lankan curries.

The Mystical Mistress of Spice, AKA mum, helps run the back whilst Baby Spice, the bubbly daughter does the cooking and also mans the front. Together this duo are serving up some great dishes to a fast growing fan base. You’ll usually find terrifically tender chicken and beef curries, with the Asian vegetables dishes on rotation depending on what is in season – sinqua, bittermelon, okra and others. If you haven’t heard of those then that’s OK as I can assure you they’re tasty. Spiced potatoes and dal can usually be found on offer too. Vegetables never tasted so good.Evidently Sri Lankan’s love spice because some of the dishes pack some serious heat, enough to break a sweat on ones brow. There is actually a 100m fire exclusion zone all the way around Amma’s Cafe at all times to prevent the Vic Arcade from burning down again. But it is not chilli for the sake of chilli as the flavours are very well balanced. You get free raita and poppadums with every meal too, the former a necessary addition to even out the spiciness.I admit I’d never had Sri Lankan curry until now but I am liking it a lot. Amma’s curries neither too oily nor too heavy and all around superb.For your lunch time curry needs, Amma’s Cafe is well worth a look.

Upon entering Pavonia Place you are immediately impressed by the relaxed; yet classy décor, with spacious linen laid tables adorned with fine glassware and cutlery; together with the impressive local artwork, subtly lit, adorning the walls.Greeted by co-owners and hosts Isaac and Renee, you instinctively know that you are going to experience an exceptional night out.While perusing the menu of fresh, local produce, all creatively interpreted by head chef Troy Wright; a must try is the Garlic Cob ($12). A warm cob loaf, studded with garlic cloves and served with a soft marinated fetta, Moderna balsamic and extra virgin olive oil, together with a wonderful lemon myrtle scented dukkah. (a middle eastern nut and spice blend) Absolutely delicious!For entrée, firstly we chose the Tempura Soft Shell Crab ($16). It looked stunning and tasted just as good. The tempura batter was crisp and light; as were the textures and subtle flavours of the crab. It was accompanied by a citrus salad and a sweet piquillo sauce. A great light entrée.Next we tasted the Pepperberry Beef Carpaccio ($15). This dish of subtle, yet complex flavours is enhanced by Australian Pepperyberry with its woody and slightly cinnamon like notes;

dressed with citrus, drizzled with olive oil, a scattering of capers and cornishon and finished with roquette and shaved parmesan. For lovers of ‘carpaccio’ another must try. The mains were just as exciting. We chose Slow Roasted Pork Belly ($36). A generous portion of pork belly cooked to perfection, with a crackly, crunchy crackle. The ginger sweet potato mash was sensational; a delicious smooth mash with a subtle hint of ginger. The pork was topped with a moist, seared SA scallop, together with a rosella and star anise glaze.Steak lovers haven’t been forgotten either as we sampled Pavonia’s Eye Fillet Steak (200g $26 / 400g $45). I chose medium-rare: again cooked to perfection; hardly requiring a knife, as the meat was so tender. Accompanied by creamed potato mash, crisp greens and I chose Pepperberry sauce: a rich, silky, smooth, deep sauce. Exquisite!We shared a serving of Pear and Sticky Date Pudding ($16). The pudding was moist and light, topped with poached sliced pear; served with pieces of macadamia praline scattered throughout a delicious hot butterscotch sauce; together with a serving of homemade vanilla ice-cream. The perfect finale to an exceptional dining experience.

In a pan add some garlic cloves, parsley, little more salt & pepper, paprika and red wine vinegar heat for about 30 seconds then poor over your cutlets. How quick and easy is that and during the Northern Territory build-up it’s just perfect. Now you’ve got the good oil head out and get the family some mackerel cutlets for the weekend.Today, things are looking up for seafood lovers in search of “responsibly sourced” seafood. Here is a simple test that will give you an indication of the ‘water retention capability’ of your skin care cream.

Leave a small dab of your favourite moisturiser exposed to the air for two or three days. For a comparison, do the same with a Dr. Spiller Biocosmetics moisturiser.

The moral of this story is one that can hold true for today's fitness population, with everyday gym goers taking on the role of the Hare. The media has recently made us all aware of the current state of affairs in professional sports, with certain "recovery methods" and "vitamins" being featured heavily in AFL teams, amongst several other sporting codes and disciplines. In a similar vein, recently reported statistics say that 1 in 4 gym users are also taking the same "vitamins" in their own training. All of the above examples fall firmly into the "Hare" category of

health and fitness. It seems to me that people are so obsessed with finishing the race first, that they've forgotten why they started in the first place. The point I'm making is, gaining better health and fitness is rarely about finishing first. It ishowever about the journey to get there. Don't let your primary focus become the finish line glory, the golden trophy or the mirrors reflection. Don't fall for the quick fix or the short cuts that are so readily available nowadays. Embrace your chosen fitness pursuits as a way for you to connect with old and new friends, to shed the stress of

Giraffes do get neck pain and commonly for the same reasons humans get neck pain, that is ergonomics. There was an incident reported recently in the Journal of Zoological and Wildlife Medicine that documented the case of a 2 year old male giraffe who presented with severe neck pain and stiffness upon his arrival on an incoming shipment*. Despite initial Veterinary management, the giraffe continued to developed neck pain, muscle spasm, and decreased neck range of motion. With the introduction of a trained Veterinary Chiropractor a series of manually applied Chiropractic treatments were applied to the affected neck vertebrae in an effort to restore normal neck mobility. Laser therapy and neck range of motion exercises were also used to reduce neck muscle spasm. This approach produced a significant improvement and highlighted the benefits of chiropractic care and physical therapy for the management of severe neck pain in a giraffe.Now can you imagine being cramped in a transport container for several hours with a neck that long, that’s what caused the Giraffes neck issue. But that is exactly what happens to

When you see a conflict or some form of violence occurring do you have the right to step in or not? I would say there is not a simple answer to this question – it depends on many factors some of which include who is involved, who we are with and the potential danger of the situation. Often people don’t step in to avoid getting caught in the cross fire which can be a smart move and steering clear from an incident is wise. However I believe that in certain situations people need to step in and let others know when they have crossed the line. This can often diffuse a situation stopping it from escalating if done in the correct manner. It is a bold step but can set a bench mark for society of what behavior is acceptable and not. In society we are often divided as to whether we should step in or not especially if it doesn’t involve us. So I ask the question – what kind of society

are we accepting by not taking action?I recall recently in the media a man having a go at two teenage girls for being extremely rude and acting in what most people would consider an inappropriate manner at a McDonald’s counter. The question arose as to whether he took appropriate action by stepping in. I have come across small outbreaks of conflict or violence that are dealt with really well, then sometimes I witness people being bullied, physically or racially harassed and no one stepping in. I believe we need to asses situations and if we can intervene to create more harmony then we should. It will create a better society that is not willing to accept poor behavior. However if you do choose to step in you need be aware of the dangers of getting involved. If you aggravate the aggressor they may turn on you and if you don’t know how to defend yourself it could get messy

very quickly. It’s best to remain calm, assertive and keep a reasonable distance when dealing with someone. Be confident within yourself and provide solutions – if people are not willing to cooperate it’s always best to call an authority such as police or security. I recently read an article that said you shouldn’t apply anything to your skin that you wouldn’t eat. Given that most of us apply things to our skin on a daily basis, it was food for thought. The article recommended applying chamomile tea to the hair as a rinse and making a toner out of the plants in your back yard. Nice thought, but the fact is most people don’t have the space to grow their own herbs or the time to make them into useable skin care products. So finding products with natural ingredients that will not harm the body is the next best option.

Here’s a few of my favourite ingredients;• Cucumber extract; My favourite because of

its cooling affect and refreshing smell. It has great skin softening and soothing attributes so is great in eye gels or after sun products.

• Pomegranate oil; Known for its high antioxidant content and conjugated fatty acids. Pomegranate has excellent moisturizing, protective and nourishing properties but is also a good anti-inflammatory. It promotes collagen production and is wonderful for mature, aging or dry skin.

• Raspberry oil; Boasts high levels of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and is a rich source of tocopherols (Vitamin E) and carotenoides (Vitamin A).It is known to reduce the effects of oxidative stress in skin. One study (Oomah, et al 2000) indicated that red raspberry seed oil may act as a broad-spectrum UV-A and UV-B shield when used at full strength.

• Turmeric (curcuma longa); Although a little tricky to use in skin care products without good formulating know how the addition of

curcumin is well worth the effort. Curcumin has been proven to exhibit anticarcinogenic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties & is a good wound healing agent.

Seems that some skin care ingredients really are good enough to eat. There are hundreds of naturally occurring ingredients and many of these I use when formulating skin care products for problem skin conditions such as acne, eczema, dermatitis, rosacea, psoriasis and fungal conditions. Road TrainsA common sight in the Outback are road trains. These are multi trailer trucks up to 50 metres (170 feet) long. Always allow plenty of room as you pass in the opposite direction of a road train as the displaced air causes severe buffering. When overtaking a road train allow 1.5 kilometres of clear road.Outback Road ConditionsAustralia has an extreme of climates especially in the north. Minor roads that are passable in the Dry season (March-November) can disappear beneath a torrent of water during the "Wet". Seek local advice should your travels take you off the main highways. Some things to look out for in country areas include potholes and rough surfaces, soft road edges and road surfaces changing

without notice.Driving at NightWhen driving at night particularly in the Outback care should be taken to lookout for wildlife that may stray onto the road. Animals are attracted by car lights. Collisions with animals such as the Red Kangaroo can cause substantial damage to your vehicle.Hitch HikersHitch hiking is illegal in Australia but still a common sight. It is recommended that you do not pick up travellers that you are not acquainted with.Driver FatigueOwing to the size of Australia and distances travelled driver fatigue has been the cause of 20% of all traffic accidents. Rest every 2 hours giving yourself a 15 minute break even when close to your destination.

Driving in theOutback

The most important thing to remember should you decide to go "off Road" (off a sealed road) in the Outback is to seek local advice on your intended route as well as ensuring someone locally knows of your travel plans. If your vehicle does break down in a remote area stay with it do not attempt to walk. Any travel across designated Aboriginal Land will require permission from the owners beforehand. As the permit process varies from state to state (and can take up to 6 weeks to obtain) it is best to contact the national parks' controlling body in each state prior to your journey.

Bali. Many of us have been, and for everyone it is a different experience. Bali offers all you could wish for in a tropical holiday destination - beaches, palm, trees, cocktails and glorious sunsets.

Once you arrive you realise you’re about to make a lot of new friends as it seems half the population of Australia had the same idea as you. Cheap beers, pumping nightclubs and the ability to have a raucous overseas trip without going too far from home make Bali the hot ticket for many young Aussies. For others Bali is a more spiritual pilgrimage. Enjoying long sleeps, simple healthy vegetarian meals and hours of yoga and meditation while gazing over the rice paddies. But I head straight for the hills to Ubud. Sure there are tourists. Of course it’s still busy, but it has nowhere near the hectic pace of the beachside villages and you only need to turn a corner and you are surrounded by lush cool tropical jungle. I stayed in an old mansion that had been converted into a hotel/art

gallery/plastic surgery clinic. Yes really. Surrounded on all sides by dense jungle with huge regal gates at the entrance, it was a total escape from the hustle and bustle and the staff could not have been more friendly, welcoming or helpful. In Bali everyone is made to feel like a VIP.There are lots of interesting things to see and do in Bali – temples, volcanoes, whole villages dedicated to the production of silver, stone statues, woven home wares and textiles. But I suggest you go with no plans. Arrive at a decent hour. Check in and relax. Set a leisurely pace for yourself and let Bali do the rest. This is the difference between ‘travel’ and ‘holiday.’ There is a lot to be said for arriving somewhere and not having a list of ‘stuff to do’. Apart from

The traditional approach of actually seeing and physically experiencing a property before deciding to buy is still the most comfortable approach for many, however, times they are a-changin’.As more developers are coming on board in the Top End, there is of course heightened competition and therefore the need for good marketing campaigns and innovative ways of communicating all the different aspects of a property to prospective investors. Gone are the days of pouring over plans trying to decipher what’s what. Today’s version of buying off the plan gives you opportunities to view the yet be built property in multi dimensions

- from 3D displays to functioning models with hydraulics that can interact with your iPad.One of the main advantages to buying off the plan is the high yield that can be gained between the purchase of the property and completion of construction. Many properties are worth considerably more when completed, and in a city like Darwin currently experiencing a boom not seen since the gold rush, it is not unreasonable to expect decent yields on off the plan purchases.Of course there are many advantages to buying off the plan, other than just the knowledge of a brand new property, the smell of fresh paint and the fact that nobody has lived there before you so the property will be in premium condition. was certainly the case for Michael Koulianos and

Pothitoula Tsougranis who were family and friends for

many years before becoming business partners at Morph Collective, a graphic design company that specializes in

marketing campaigns for off-the-plan developments.

Michael comes from an IT background and ran N.A.C.A., a business offering network support and maintenance, web development and graphic design services. Started in 2001, the business grew steadily and patterns began to emerge in the work they were doing. “Most of our clients were in the construction industry, so over the years we started to introduce new services to cater for their needs. We saw a niche and really wanted to become a one stop shop for this market.”

Meanwhile, Pothitoula, having completed a Bachelor of Architecture, was working freelance as a Graduate Architect, and after sharing office space with Michael, gradually became more involved in the business. In 2009 they decided to ‘morph’ their businesses. Combining their skillset meant a more comprehensive offering for their clients and Morph Collective was born.

It was decided they would focus on three main areas of expertise – graphic design and marketing, architectural illustrations and building design. This means they have something to offer the client at every stage of the development, and can provide clear and consistent branding from the birth of the idea to the final stages.

Michael and Pothitoula are particularly proud of the team they work with at Morph Collective. It’s a young team with new and innovative ideas and there is often overlap into each other’s areas of expertise to ensure the appropriate aspects of the project are being considered from all perspectives.

When developers first offer their new products to the market they usually start with lower prices to encourage a faster sales rate.When construction commences, and the developer has met their construction finance requirements, prices usually rise. Therefore, for investors who commit early to the project there is often a good price incentive.If you do your homework and everything goes to plan then buying off the plan may be a good proposition, particularly given the projected growth for the NT in coming years.Off the plan buying allows you to purchase a property for tomorrow at today’s prices. In a rising market, this can result in large capital gains before you even take possession. Of course if prices were to fall, which has rarely happened in most areas of Australia particularly Darwin, and certainly not for long periods of time, you have to wear that risk.Most developers require a 10 per cent deposit on signing the contract. When Estelle and Peter decided to purchase a deserted run down nursery 18 years ago, they had no intentions of starting a garden centre and knew almost nothing about gardening. Now almost 2 decades later, Estelle’s passion for gardening is evident as she

reflects back on her years at Allora Gardens.

“For the first few years we didn’t realize the level of maintenance

involved in the products we would be selling. It hadn’t occurred

to us that you have to wait for things to grow! Not only wait, but

also feed them, weed them, stop pests from eating them. But it’s

all been worth it, now I feel that Allora is one of the best things

that’s happened in my life.”

Their 18th birthday party will be held over the weekend of

August 10th and 11th and Estelle is holding a crazy 20 – 50% off

sale to celebrate. * Allora is offering 20% of all water features

and statues and 50% off every item for sale in the car park. Extra

spot specials will be available throughout the store for the entire

weekend. There will be a wide range of decorative garden items

How fortunate are we living in the tropics, with the variety of colour we can utilize in our garden designs. Or keeping them potted in a sunny position on our balconies in a brightly coloured decorative pot.. Most people think of hibiscus as spectacular looking flowers from the islands of the South Pacific. In fact several species are native to China. But thanks to the hybridising activities of growers world-wide there is now a magnificent range of available flower colours of the Hibiscus rosa sinensis. It’s commonly called the Hawaiian hibiscus because that’s where most of the hybridisation took place. Hibiscus rosa-sinensis grows well in the tropics of Darwin.The plant needs full sun and a well-drained soil and it’s important it doesn’t get wet feet. Add some mulch to stop the soil drying out, but make sure this doesn’t touch the stem. The soil should be neutral to slightly alkaline and feeding is important. Hibiscus need to be well fertilised and respond well to a citrus or a specialised hibiscus food or Apply at planting time with a good slow release fertilizer like

osmocote. Hibiscus have a couple of flowering flushes, you can promote more flowering times using sulphate of pot ash. The plant responds well to pruning. Prune hard once a year for shape or give it a light prune regularly to bush it up. Hibiscus are also used as a great screening plant, trimmed, fed and watered regularly. To give that sense of definition for a barrier or a fenced off area.Hibiscus tiliaceus ‘Rubra’ also known as cottonwood is a medium native tree with deep bronze/maroon foliage and a pretty yellow flower with a dark centre.. It can reach a height of 8 metres, and a maximum spread of 6-8 metres. It is fast growing with a dense habit and a rounded crown when mature. There are great examples of these planted around town. Cottonwood is a great dense screening tree, coastal tolerant and can be used as a beautiful feature tree, adaptable to most soils…The varieties of hibiscus are all too numerous to mention.
