STUDENT lIFE AND SUPPORT SERVICES A great university experience includes being part of a supportive community. UTS has over 100 clubs and societies on campus, along with bars, cafes, a gym and our Multi-Purpose Sports Hall. PRACTICAl ExPERIENCE Want a degree that’s practice–oriented? Here are just some of the options available to you when you study Design, Architecture or Building at UTS.
> Students are invited and encouraged to enter their work in a wide range of external competitions and prizes in Australia and internationally.
> Volunteer to work on building projects in disadvantaged communities through the elective Construction for Developing Communities in Australia and overseas.
> Gain insight into industry practice through guest lecturers and industry speakers on campus.
> Design & Architecture students have the opportunity to showcase their work at various faculty exhibitions and shows. Industry professionals are invited to engage and interact with students, and scout for bright new talent.
> UTS Architecture students have the opportunity to complete Global Field Studios. This subject allows you to take part in design projects overseas. In previous years students have travelled to Beirut to study post conflict architecture, and to Paris to study extreme urban density.
> Built Environment students are required to complete a professional practice subject, in which they gain 200 days of industry experience before they graduate.

You were accepted to take part in a three-month internship with Gehry Partners US last year – how did you get the internship? Architect Frank Gehry has formed a new relationship with UTS through the design of the new Business School building. Architecture students could submit a portfolio and four were chosen by Gehry Partners to go to America for a paid internship. I was one of four UTS Architecture students who completed the internship, which ran for three months in Los Angeles.
What attracted you to an internship with Gehry Partners? It is a great opportunity to really understand how the project begins within the practice and becomes realised as architecture. Gehry Partners are renowned for their model making process so it will be great to understand how the technique of model making helps the design process.

Why did you choose to study Architecture at UTS? It’s relevant to the architectural practice of the present and future as it deals with new practices, new technologies, and new theories while teaching students the fundamentals of working in the industry.
The UTS School of Architecture also runs public lectures from international architects, artists and theorists, which are great for learning more about architecture and helping you with your degree.

The DAB Faculty has six main Computing Labs which run both Apple OS and Windows, with a wide range of the latest software programs used for teaching in DAB courses. You'll have access to extensive technical infrastructure and a digital imaging centre, with breakout areas to encourage collaboration with other students.
The Design Studios on level 7 offer a flexible space that can be quickly changed to create smaller spaces for tutorials, or can be used as a large open area for lectures and public seminars. The studios contain storage lockers, display areas and workspaces for all design students who have access to the studio from 8am to 3am daily. The spaces feature permanent audiovisual equipment and moveable display panels. Worktables are wired for computer connections, and have a durable surface to withstand cutting.
The Architecture Studio is a dedicated space for the teaching of architecture. This large space can be quickly changed to contain up to five smaller spaces for tutorials, or can be used as a large open area for lectures and public seminars. The space contains storage lockers, display areas and workspace for architecture students to create innovative designs. It also has permanent audio-visual equipment.
The state-of-the-art Digital Workshop houses 3D printers, laser cutters and a 3D scanner. This workshop allows students and staff to create three-dimensional prototypes very quickly, directly from a computer generated design. The 3D scanner provides the ability to digitally record the physical properties of objects as a digital file for further design manipulation,
while the laser cutter can cut a range of materials from cardboard and plastics to metal.
The Fabrication Workshop provides access to a full range of digital and traditional equipment, including a vacuum molding machine. Equipment in the workshop includes wood and metal lathes, vacuum table, pedestal drills, disc sanders, welders, bench saws, routers, milling machines, steel benders and guillotines, and a collection of hand and portable power tools.
Students can use the Fabrication Workshop for metal-working, wood-working, plastics, welding, spray painting, materials storage, tool storage and general use.
Set in two locations, the Fashion and Textiles Studio and Print Workshop contain a number of valuable resources including lamination, ultrasonic bonding, single head machine embroidery and digital and flock printing. Students can use a pattern making area, cutting and assembly area with a heat press, a sewing workshop with sewing machines, overlockers and ironing equipment, fitting rooms, a store and an office for the creation of garments.
The Photomedia Studio is available to UTS students studying Photography as an elective as well as the Bachelor of Design in Photography and Situated Media. The Photomedia Studio includes studios with electronic and tungsten lighting, product table, backdrops and cyclorama; a film processing area, and wet and dry darkrooms. Its digital image lab contains computers with colour-calibrated screens and a large variety of film scanners with variable formats.

PRACTICAl ExPERIENCE AND CUTTING EDGE FACIlITIES
The Immersive Construction Environments (ICE) Studio, features a 3D stereoscopic screen that allows students to visualise and simulate building models and construction processes in 3D, using 3D eyewear.
The ICE studio integrates research and teaching applications of 3D simulations for the built environment: visualising cities, precincts, projects, and buildings in three dimensions changes the way we create, collaborate, and test out solutions to complex problems.
The Animation Hub comprises all the facilities necessary for postgraduate and undergraduate animation programs.
It houses the Faculty's Motion Capture Laboratory which is of an industry standard, allowing students and staff to use the same world-class system as leading animation production companies worldwide.
The MoCap Lab uses a Vicon optical system which allows human movement to be captured by a series of cameras and then encoded as digital data. These data allow animators to produce characters with life-like movement. The MoCap Lab is enhanced with Motion Builder software to allow the captured movement to be applied to the movement of characters, which do not conform to human body dimensions.
The Chromakey studio, with green screen plates allows live action to be combined with animation and visual effects. Other facilities include a sound booth from recording sound effects and voices; and computer controlled dolly and tracking equipment for stop motion animation.

WElCOmE TO ThE UTS SChOOl OF DESIGN All six bachelor degrees offered by the School of Design offer you the optimal combination of theory and practice in a learning environment that is firmly positioned at the forefront of Australian design education.
Our practice-based, three-year degrees are designed to provide you with an outlook and ambition that extends beyond UTS, cultivating a collaborative and global vision of design. With integrated exposure to professional practice, interdisciplinary subjects, industry projects and competitions, you’ll develop both flexibility and confidence to work in and across the diverse environments that constitute contemporary practice.
All of our first year students have the chance to collaborate, either on specific projects, in theory classes or the design camp. In later years, Design Studios will give you a dynamic experience that will allow you to develop specialised expertise.
Paralleling the process that professionals undertake in industry, the design studio integrates practice-oriented learning around specific themes or projects.
Additionally students are able to undertake global studios that engage with both the international community and other renowned design institutions located in but not limited to Tokyo, Seoul, Mumbai, Barcelona, Berlin or Venice.
As a UTS Design graduate, you'll have the knowledge, skills and experiences that are competitive and applicable to your individual professional career, and meet the latest advances in industry and research standards. You'll have developed an understanding of your own design language and theoretical position in relation to historical and contemporary contexts, which will support you as a leader of the next generation of design thinkers.

bachelor of Design in Animation
WhY ChOOSE ThIS COURSE? The Bachelor of Design in Animation will teach you how to conceptualise, visualise, realise, produce and create animation across many different types of media. It will open up animation careers in film, television, online and mobile application design.
You’ll learn about the fundamentals of animation – performance, narrative, characterisation, form, motion, time, space and aesthetics. You’ll explore and create new approaches to 2D and 3D Animation and VFX (visual effects) design.
The course has a strong emphasis on drawing and image-making, dramatisation and physical movement and expression. You’ll learn a full range of animation techniques and develop skills in industry-standard facilities.
By learning through a variety of industry collaborations, field trips, studios and electives you'll graduate with the flexibility and confidence to work in the diverse, contemporary animation industry.
There is also the option of further developing your animation projects at Honours level.

WhY ChOOSE ThIS COURSE? Fashion and Textiles at UTS places great emphasis on the development of individual creativity, personal style and design philosophy. The course encourages an understanding of global fashion in order to continually explore and question new ways to present and rethink fashion. Fashion theory is embedded in practice and teaching is led by innovation and originality throughout the studios. Graduates have become leading designers in their field and regularly return to UTS as guest lecturers.
The Fashion Studios give you a choice of fashion and textile options to design your personal career path. Projects take the form of both individual and group work to simulate team environments as they exist in the fashion and textile design industry.
Professional Practice is embedded in all Fashion Studios and builds on relevant industry practice within both local and global contexts. You will participate in international and national design competitions and industry sponsorships.

WhY ChOOSE ThIS COURSE? Integrated Product Design expands on the traditional field of industrial design to reflect the changed realities of the globalised design profession. With a strong emphasis on creativity and technology, it equips students with the capacity to form an integrated approach and understanding of how to conceptualise, visualise and realise products, services and/or systems as a design professional.
You will learn how to move seamlessly from the design of material objects to the design of services together with the communication skills that will allow you to work across cultures, languages and locations. You will also learn how to take on and maintain a specialist role within a design team, in areas such as interaction design, smart object design, service and system design, as well as traditional industrial design roles.
This course is supported by a number of facilities including a Fabrication Workshop equipped with the latest in rapid prototyping technology. See page 3 for more information.

WhY ChOOSE ThIS COURSE? Unique among Australian design courses, Interior and Spatial Design spans design fields across interior architecture, architecture, urban planning, exhibition design, and design for performance and events. The course focuses on individual and group design projects and their local and international contexts, and the use of advanced technologies for representation, fabrication and modelling. It will equip you with the skills, spatial literacy, flexibility and confidence to work in the dynamic and international environments of all areas of Interior and Spatial Design practice.
In our creative and challenging studio environment, you will be taught to generate cohesive design approaches and a critically informed practice in which ideas and the art of making are brought together.

WhY ChOOSE ThIS COURSE? The Bachelor of Design in Photography and Situated Media explores the image in terms of its cultural history, its material uses and its social implications. Combining contemporary photography practice with emerging digital technologies, this course equips graduates with the visual literacy and technical skills they require to hold leading positions in image-based design professions.
The course balances technical skills and creativity with ethics and theory. You’ll study alongside other design disciplines in project-based studios. You’ll encounter the city as a character, employing images in a range of artistic, political, and commercial contexts, exploring their role as part of the fabric of both collective memory and the built environment.

WhY ChOOSE ThIS COURSE? Visual Communication at UTS is designed to provide you with a global vision of design. bECOmE A REGISTERED ARChITECT The Master of Architecture is the professional entry degree necessary for architectural practice. It may only be undertaken after the successful completion of the Bachelor of Design in Architecture or equivalent.
Once you have completed a Master of Architecture and requisite practice experience, you will be eligible to apply for registration as an architect. UTS Architecture courses are accredited by the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia, the NSW Architects Registration Board and the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA).

GRADUATE IN ThE WORkFORCE The first year of study is undertaken full-time. In subsequent years you have the option of enrolling part-time, making it possible to gain significant professional experience before you graduate. Our students have professional knowledge in addition to creative skills when they finish the course.

WhY ChOOSE ThIS COURSE? The Bachelor of Design in Architecture provides you with a rich education oriented towards international practice and design experimentation. Teaching and learning is hands-on and undertaken in teams using the most innovative digital design and fabrication technologies available to the architectural profession in dedicated studios and workshops.

TUITION FEES local studentsMost local students will be studying in a Commonwealth Supported Place which means the Australian Government makes a contribution to the cost of your study while you pay a student contribution.
If eligible, you can elect to pay your student contribution upfront and receive a 10% discount. Alternatively, you can defer payment of your student contribution using HECS-HELP.
Students are also required to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee. This fee funds services and amenities at UTS such as the social and cultural clubs, services for developing students study skills, UTS Union food, beverage and retail outlets (including a 10% discount for students), the free legal services centre for students, and the second-hand bookstore. If you're an Australian citizen or on a humanitarian visa, this fee may be deferred through a new government loan scheme called SA-HELP.

APPlYING TO UTS
lOCAl STUDENTS Applications for most UTS undergraduate courses must be lodged online through the Universities Admission Centre (UAC): www.uac.edu.au
Applications open in August and must be received by UAC by the end of September. Late fees apply for applications received after this date.
For high school student applicants, selection is based on your ATAR only. You may also increase your chances of getting in to UTS with the Year 12 Bonus Scheme and/or access schemes, see below for more info.
If you are currently completing the International Baccalaureate (IB) in Australia, or if you have completed your IB in the past, you can apply to UTS through UAC. How your IB is considered varies depending on the degree you're applying for. Details for each degree are provided on the specific course pages of the UTS website. If you completed your IB in another country you may also need to demonstrate your English language proficiency.
For mature-aged students and non-current school leavers applying for a design course, you may apply using an ATAR [or equivalent] OR by submitting a Design portfolio, which is used for interview short-listing. To be considered for interview, applicants must submit a digital portfolio online. Visit the relevant course page on the UTS website for further information.

Educational Access Schemes
UTS Educational Access Schemes take into account a range of educational disadvantages that may have affected your most recent academic performance. The following schemes assist applicants to gain entry to UTS courses:
> inpUTS Educational Access Scheme awards 10 concessional ATAR points for high school leavers and students with post-secondary qualifications who have experienced educational disadvantage and achieve a minimum ATAR of 69.
> UTS Elite Athletes and Performers Special Admissions Scheme awards 5 concessional points off the ATAR cut-off to applicants who are elite athletes and/or performers (representing school or state in national level competition) and whose sport or performance commitments have impacted on their studies.
> Principals’ Recommendation Scheme aims to support Year 12 students who are eligible for financial hardship under the inpUTS Educational Access Scheme, achieve a minimum ATAR of 69 (80 for Law) and who is nominated by their high school principal, by offering them a place at UTS, given that a UTS course is one of their UAC preferences.

ENTRY PAThWAYS If you don’t gain entry to your degree of choice, consider undertaking another form of study and then reapply the following year as a non-current school leaver. At UTS, there are a number of pathways you can take to gain entry to your preferred course:
Complete an InSEARCH DiplomaUTS:INSEARCH is the premium pathway provider to UTS. Diploma programs can provide direct entry into corresponding undergraduate degrees and you could fast track into the second year of a UTS undergraduate degree, depending on the course you choose, and your results.
UTS Foundation Studies provides pathways to UTS:INSEARCH diplomas and entry into the first year of an undergraduate degree at UTS (provided you meet the academic admission requirements and if you obtain exceptional results). For more info, visit www.insearch.edu.au.
Subject to successful completion of a diploma with the required Grade Point Average
Complete a TAFE DiplomaUTS offers some subject exemptions to students who apply to study at UTS after first completing a course at TAFE. Each exemption is assessed on an individual basis.
Commence study of a course with a lower ATAR requirement, either at UTS or another university, and apply to transfer to your preferred degree after a year. The marks you achieve in your first year of study will count towards your application and you may be eligible to receive credit recognition towards your final degree for some of the subjects you’ve studied.
