Thebasicaimofthecourseistointroducestudentstothetheoreticalandpracticalelementsofthemicroscopiccompositionanddifferencesinorganandtissuestructuresinvariousdomesticanimals.Lessonswillallowstudentstogaintheknowledgeofthemicroscopicstructure,embryonicformationandthedevelopmentoftissuesandorgansbylookingatthestructureandfunctionofthecardiovascular,endocrine,lymphatic,digestive,respiratory,urinaryandreproductivesystem,aswellastheearlyembryonaldevelopmentandtheoriginanddevelopmentofdifferentorgansystemsandbodyparts.

Assessment

Thefinalmarkiscomposedoftwoseparategrades.Aftercompletingthepracticalcourse,studentstakethepracticalcolloquium(100%).Onlyaftersuccessfullypassingthecolloquium,canstudentsalsotaketheoralexam.Theexamisacombinationofdefenceofthehistologicalprotocol(writtendescriptionofthehistologicalsection)(30%)andanoralexam(70%).

Theobjectiveoftheparasitologycourseistointroducestudentstothesystematics,biology,morphologyandlifecyclesofparasitesandthechangestheyinduceintheirhosts.Workisdividedintotheoreticallecturesandpracticalwork.Lectureswillcovertheeffectsofparasiticdiseases,theroleandmechanismsoftheimmunesystem,andthemorphologicalandbiologicalcharacteristicsofparasites,aswellastheiractivitiesinthehost.Thepracticalpartwilldealwithsampling,practicalexaminationsandthemorphologyanddevelopmentstagesofdifferentparasites.

Assessment

Thepurposeofthiscourseistoensurestudentsgainanunderstandingofgeneralandspecialphysiologicalprocessesindomesticandotheranimalstreatedbyveterinarymedicine.Courselectureswillfocusontheprogressivedevelopmentofknowledgeandunderstandingofphysiologicalprocessesassociatedwithbodyorgansystems(cardiovascular,digestive,urinary,respiratory,musculoskeletal,nervous,endocrine),theirsignificanceandcooperationinthemaintenanceofbodyhomeostasis,aswellasanunderstandingofnutrientandenergyutilization,thermoregulation,maintenanceofacid-baseandwaterbalance,lactationandeggproduction.Studentsalsoobtainpracticalskillsbybeingintroducedtoanalytical,diagnosticandexperimentalmethodsusedinmodernphysiology.

Thecourseofpathomorpologicalpractisefamiliarisesveterinarystudentswiththedutiesofaveterinarypathologist–establishingthecauseofdeathordeterminingtheetiologyandcourseofadisease.Beforeworkinginthenecropsyroomandthelaboratory,studentsaremadewellacquaintedwiththenecessarysafetymeasures.Duringthiscourse,studentswillperformadissectionofonecarnivore(dogorcat),apig,anadultruminantorhorseandasmallruminantorcattle.Samplesoftissuesandorgansaretakenforadditionaldiagnosticprocedures.Inthelaboratory,studentswillbeacquaintedwiththelaboratoryequipmentandmethodsthatareusedinhistopathologicdiagnostics.Fordiagnosticcytopathology,writteninstructionsfortheGiemsastainingmethodandpreparationofsmearsisgiventostudents.

Syllabusoutline

Thiscourseintroducesstudentstohealthsuitabilityandqualityofmilkproductsandselectedfoodsofplantorigin.Lessonswilllookatthechemicalcompositionofmilk,judgementofhygienicsuitability,microbiologicalcontamination,heattreatment,hygieneinmilkproduction,milktransportandsale,veterinarycontrolindairiesandtransport,technologicalprocessforsingletypesorgroupsofmilkproducts,theirspoilage,qualityandjudgementofwholesomeness.Thesamelevelofexaminationwillbeprovidedoffoodsofplantoriginandtheirpresenceindifferentproducts.Duringpracticalclasses,studentswillconductmicrobiological,chemicalandsensoryexaminationofmilk,milkproductsandfoodofplantorigin;andduringfieldwork,theywillsurveyadairyfactoryandexamineitstechnologicalprocesses.

Theaimofthiscourseistofamiliarisestudentswiththebasicbreedingconditionsanddiseasesofexoticanimalspecies,especiallyreptiles.Specialfocusisgiventohighlyprotectedspecies,whosetradeiscontrolledbyCITES.Studentswillspendalargepartofthelecturesonbasicknowledgeofhealthcareofreptilesandexoticspeciesofanimals.Theywillalsogetbasicknowledgeonhowtohandlesuchanimals,whatlivingconditionsanddiettheyhavetoofferthemandhowtoprotectthemselvesandothersfrompossiblebitesortransmissionofinfectiousdiseases.Inadditiontothemandatoryscreeningofkeepingsuchanimalsincaptivity,lectureswillespeciallyemphasisethebasicsofclinicaldiagnosticsandtreatment,becauseofthedifferentphysiologicalprocessesofthesespeciesincomparisonwithmorefamiliartypesofdomesticatedanimals.Attheendofthecourse,studentswillalsobefamiliarwithlegislationinthefieldofexoticanimalspeciesinSloveniaandEurope.

NOTICE:Becausethisisanextra-muralcourse,studentsarerequiredtofindontheirowntheclinicswheretheywillwork.Studentsgainpracticalexperiencebyworkinginsideexistingveterinaryservicesandveterinary-sanitarycontrolandarefamiliarisedwiththetypeofworkdoneindifferentveterinaryinstitutionsacrossSlovenia.AtraineeshipattheInfrastructureCentreforSustainableRecultivationVremščicaintroducesstudentstosustainablecultivationandveterinary-sanitarycontrolintheproductionofmilkproducts.AtraineeshipinthelaboratoriesoftheNationalVeterinaryInstitute(NVI)attheVeterinaryFacultyallowsstudentstofamiliarisethemselveswiththeproceduresforcollectingsamples,diagnosisofspecificcausesofinfectiousdiseasesanddeterminethewholesomenessoffoodstuffsofanimaloriginandanimalfeed,aswellastheproceduresusedforreportingtheresultsofspecifictests.InsomeoftheunitsattheNVI,studentsgetfirst-handexperienceoftheroleofveterinariansinthebreedingandhealthcareoffishandhoneybees.ClinicspresentattheVeterinaryFacultyalsoallowstudentstoobtainadditionalknowledgeinthehealthcareofanimalsatasecondarylevel.Workatacertifiedveterinaryclinicathomeorabroadenablesstudentstogainapracticalclinicalexperienceandviewpointofveterinarymedicine.

AssessmentStudentsmustsubmitaworkdiaryaftertheendoftheirtraineeship,whichmustbesignedoffbytheworkunitororganisationtheyworkedat.Thecourseisgradedpass/fail.

Theobjectiveofthiscourseistogivestudentsthetheoreticalandpracticalknowledgeinthefieldofclinicallaboratorydiagnostics(Clinicalpathology)andtoteachthemhowtousethisknowledgeinpracticewhendiagnosingdiseasesandassessingthehealthstatusofanimals.Duringlessons,studentswilllearnhowtopreparelaboratorymaterialandequipment,howtocollect,sendorpreservesamples,aboutintra-andinter-laboratorycontrolofwork,howtoprepareandexaminebloodsamples,aboutthebiochemicalexaminationofbloodserum,themetabolicprofileandmilkprofiletests,theexaminationofurineandurinesediment,andabouttheselectionofparametersregardingtoclinicalsignsandtheinterpretationofresultsindifferentspeciesofdomesticanimals.

Theobjectiveofthiscourseistoqualifystudentsforindependentworkwithinthescopeofanaesthesia,reanimationandintensivetherapywithanemphasisoncompanionanimals.Lectureswillstartwithanintroductiontotheterminology,thenexaminethepremedicationanddifferenttypesofanaesthetics,breathingcircuitsandequipment,monitoring,andcardiopulmonaryresuscitation,aswellasintensivetherapyandspecialanaesthesiaforsmall,largeandexoticanimals.Practicallecturestaketheformofindividualclinicalwork.

Assessment

Thefinalmarkiscomposedoftwogrades.Studentsneedtotaketheoralcolloquium(seminarpresentationofacasereport,familiaritywithanaestheticequipmentanddrugs,successfulsolutiontorealclinicalsituationsandmasteryofbasictechnicalskillsatpracticallectures)(100%)andaftersuccessfullypassingthecolloquium,anoralexam(100%).

Theaimofthiscourseisforstudentstoobtainin-depththeoreticalandpracticalknowledgeaboutoncologyinveterinarymedicine.Lecturecontentswillbeseparatedintoseveralchapters,suchascancerbiology,principlesofclinicaldiagnosticofcancerdiseases,principlesoftreatmentinveterinaryoncology,selectedmostfrequentcancerdiseasesindogsandcats,practicalworkthroughclinicaldiagnosticsandexaminationofpatientswithselectedmostfrequentcancerdiseases,andtreatmentofcancerdiseaseswithademonstrationofradiotherapy.

Assessment

Thefinalmarkiscomposedoftwoseparategrades.Thefirstisgainedbysittingawrittenexamonthetheoreticalpartofthecourse(100%),thesecondbypresentingapaper(100%).Studentsmustsuccessfullypresentthepaperbeforebeingallowedtositthewrittenexam.

Theprimaryobjectiveofahealthandproductionmanagementprogrammeforherdsoffood-producinganimalsistomaintainanimalhealthandproductivityatalevelthatishighlyefficientandprovidesmaximaleconomicreturnstotheowner.Inordertoachievethis,studentswillbeintroducedtothemethodsandgoalsofherdhealthprogrammes,thefactorsthatinfluencethehealthstatusandproductivityoffarmanimals,tonutritionmanagement,housingconditions,reproductionandreplacementoftheherd,todiseasesofthemammaryglandandclaws,tohowtokeeprecordsandperformdataanalysis,andtohowtochooseandimplementnecessarycorrectivemeasures.

Thegoalofthiscourseistoprovidestudentswithin-depthknowledgeofthediseasesandtherapyofthecardiovascularsystemindogsandcats.Studentsarealsofamiliarisedwiththepracticaluseofdiagnosticmethodsandtheirinterpretation.Lessonswillcovercausesandmanagementofheartfailure,cardiacarrhythmiasandmedicineusedtomanagethem,degenerativevalvulardiseasesandinfectiousendocarditis,cardiomyopathy,congenitalheartdiseases,pericardialdiseases,systemicdiseasesthatcauseheartpathology,dirofilariasisandvasculardiseases.

Syllabusoutline

Thiscourseaimstofamiliarisestudentswiththephysiologicalcharacteristicsofhorsesusedinsports,withthehorsesportindustry,withthemedicalproblemsthatoftenoccurinsuchasetting,aswellasinformstudentsabouttheuseofillegalsubstance(doping)insportsthatusehorses.Duringlectures,studentswillexaminetheathleticcapabilitiesofhorses,thephysiologicalmodelofasporthorse,thedifferencebetweentrainedanduntrainedhorses,howsuchhorsesareproperlyfed,themedicalproblemstheyencounterforeachspecificsport,howtoprovidetreatmentandwhatforbiddenpharmacologicalsubstances(doping)areusedinsportsinvolvinghorses.
