Insert narrative outline (if required) in the space below VETM 520: this is a team-taught course and also identified as place holder for most of the poultry and swine lectures in our curriculum. As course coordinator, I am not only responsible for logistics and course content, but also assist sessional instructors in preparing lectures and providing them with teaching support. My educational contributions to the DVM curriculum have been through involvement in curriculum working group and curriculum committee. In addition to major contributions to course material development, I was coordinator of VETM 461 and VETM 520, outlined the focus of the course, and got other instructors involved. As part of my clinical appointment (and as practice liaison), I provide student supervision and teaching feedback for veterinarians in rotations offered by VAHS Airdrie. Credit Courses TAUGHT at OTHER UNIVERSITIES As Visiting Professor, I delivered parts of the Food Animal Medicine course in sixth semester at the St George’s University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Grenada, spring 2014. During my sabbatical leave September 2015 – February 2016 I spend 2 months at the University of Wisconsin, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine working with Dr Dopfer on diagnostics for treponemes causing digital dermatitis in cattle. I spend 2 months in Europe, based at the University of Utrecht, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. During that time, I have accepted several invitations for invited presentations at the Veterinary Faculties in Utrecht (NL), Glasgow (UK) and Oslo (No):

1. Digital Dermatitis in dairy cattle; footbath strategies and new laboratory technologies (NL)

2. Field trials and in vitro approaches to improve Digital Dermatitis control strategies in dairy cattle (NL)

3. Digital Dermatitis control strategies in dairy cattle (NL) 4. Data complexity in evaluating the effectiveness of a standardized footbath protocol in

the prevention of digital dermatitis in Alberta dairy farms (NL) 5. Mortellaro’s disease: is it a problem or not? 6. If one lame cow is the tip, how do we explore the iceberg? managing lameness at the

herd level (NO) 7. Managing lameness at the herd level. The exciting job of a herd health veterinarian (NO) 8. On-farm Assessment of Cow Comfort and Lameness on Canadian Dairy Farms (NO) 9. “It always seems impossible until it’s done” Global Health Research in the NCA in

Tanzania (UK) From 1997-2007 on average, I taught 5-10 hours in the DVM curriculum per week. Unfortunately, European Universities don’t necessarily provide course numbers for reference. Teaching responsibilities

o Lecturer in ruminant health topics for veterinary students in the pre-clinical stage. Topics mainly include infectious disease in cattle and small ruminants and herd health management topics to teach students how to deal with management programs and analyze farm data.

o Performing clinical trainings for students during their rotations. These are performed in small groups (3 to 8 students) in the ambulatory clinic.

o Teaching epidemiology (pre-clinical and clinical stages) o Mentoring veterinary students o Involved in development of new educational programs for veterinary students. Besides

the new curricula introduced at the Veterinary Faculty in 1995 and 2001, I was heavily involved in the introduction of a BSc and MSc system introduced to European

Universities starting in September 2007

Courses taught at the Utrecht Universities Faculty of Veterinary Medicine: o Evidence-based veterinary medicine o Herd health management o Large animal medicine o Emerging diseases o Disease control o Epidemiology: basic principles and applied epidemiology o Small ruminant and dairy goat elective courses o Clinical instructor in the ambulatory clinic o Veterinary epidemiology graduate course of the MSc course Epidemiology (designated

as prestige MSc by the Utrecht University) Other relevant teaching activities & accomplishments Include curriculum development, supervision of staff, contributions to workshops or committees. Based on my experience with curriculum development and curricular changes (Utrecht University 1995-2001), I have been actively involved in the development of the DVM curriculum in Calgary. Upon arrival in February 2008, I joined the Curriculum Working Group and subsequently represented the department of Production Animal Health on the Curriculum Committee (I chaired the Curriculum Committee for 2 years, 2009-2011). VETM 344/VETM 420: I am one of three instructors in these courses and developed the course and lecture materials for the sections that I am leading, including all examination material. VETM 520: I have brought the preventive veterinary medicine component to our curriculum through development of the advanced health management course.

E. CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES Please describe clinical/professional activities that are part of your UCVM duties. Please include location, time and type of activities.

As part of my clinical appointment, I work as a licensed veterinarian in a specialized beef practice ‘Veterinary-Agri-Health-Services’ in Airdrie, AB, Canada. In general, I spend 1 day/week either in practice or working on practice-related issues.

H. RESEARCH SUPPORT FUNDED RESEARCH Copy and paste the funding table below for each additional grant or contract.

As a veterinary epidemiologist, I focus my research on detection and transmission of infectious diseases within and between susceptible populations. Although my initial focus was cattle, I have adopted an ecosystem approach and have included several components of wildlife research. I have been successful in securing industry funding, mainly through team efforts. ACTIVE GRANTS
