Formal commands have the same conjugation as the subjunctive.

What is the subjunctive?

The subjunctive is a mood in Spanish

Deals with doubt, desire, emotion Follows:

Impersonal Expressions + que Doubt + que Emotion + que Indirect commands + que

Impersonal Expressions

Present an aspect of uncertainty or subjectivity, which triggers the subjunctive.

Ejemplos

Es bueno que Es importante que Es lógico que Es malo que Es mejor que Es posible que Es probable que Es raro que Es triste que Es ridículo que

It’s good that It’s important that It’s logical that It’s bad that It’s better that It’s possible that It’s probable that It’s rare that It’s sad that It’s ridiculous that

¡Ojo! These expressions DON’T need subjunctive

Es evidente que

Es obvio que Es verdad que No hay duda que

It’s evident that It’s obvious that It’s true that There’s no doubt

that

Since these expressions show certainty, no subjunctive is necessary

In order to be the best student it’s good that you study every day.

Para ser el mejor alumno es bueno que tú estudies cada día.

In order to be the best student it’s necessary that you do the homework every day.

Para ser el mejor alumno es necesario que tú hagas la tarea todos los días.
