Afew weeks ago, I had a conversation with a couple of my automotive students, one of whom was considering purchasing an older Ford truck. His dilemma was that this particular truck was located in the Midwest. The students were discussing shipping options and whether it would be more cost effective to have it transported, or to pick the truck up in person and drive it back to Delaware.

I smiled and said, “Go get it and drive it home.” No doubt, they’d encounter

problems along the way, but the lessons learned in overcoming those obstacles

and the resulting stories would last a lifetime. Most of us have similar stories of

hard-learned lessons from the roadside. Let’s face it: the adventure sparked by the insanity of setting out on a trip of several hundred miles in an unknown car is a rite of passage in the automotive hobby. It’s something every automotive enthusiast needs to experience at least once!

The following stories recap a few of my experiences: When I was 17, I towed my ’68 Dart GT 100 miles home from Salisbury, Md., behind my first ’64 Dart using a couple of tow chains and tires sandwiched tightly between the bumpers. It’s amazing what you can do when you don’t know any better! A few months later, a buddy and I dragged another car home in a surprise thunderstorm at night, with a borrowed pick-up, a tow chain, and makeshift wiring to feed the

taillights. The wipers on the newly acquired car were inoperative, but somehow he avoided ramming the truck. A few years later, I boarded an Amtrak one way to Boston to purchase a car only to discover it had no title. The seller assured me that Massachusetts did not issue titles for cars more than 10 years old, and the only paperwork he offered during this late night transaction was a hand-written bill of sale. Before handing over a considerable sum of cash for a car I feared was stolen, I spoke with the local police who verbally confirmed the state’s policy on old vehicle titles but refused to give me anything in writing. Reluctantly, I bought the car, spent the night in a sleeping bag next to it in a rest area on the Massachusetts Turnpike, and made the remainder of the trip home without issue. Even so, it was a tense couple of days before I had my new Delaware title in hand!

I have a number of similar stories, but one stands above all others and it involves a car purchased by my friend Steve Gray. Steve and I met more than 30 years ago when I was a shy 16-year-old working at a vacuum cleaner and sewing machine shop called Acuri Sew-Vac on Kirkwood Highway in Delaware. As introverted as I was, Steve was every bit as extroverted. While I was content to sit at my bench and knock out repairs, he was in his element on the sales floor helping customers. Despite our very different personalities, we became friends, and one thing we shared was a passion for cars. Steve’s first car had been a lime green ’70 Dart Swinger, and for years he’d longed for another. By 1996 he owned the store, now called Steve’s Sew-‘n’-Vac, and the hunt was on for a car similar to his first.

One of Steve’s most admirable qualities is his ability to look and to think beyond the invisible barriers most folks place before themselves. While ordinary folks might dismiss an idea as “ It can’t be done,” Steve’s approach is to say, “There’s got to be a way, and I’m going to find it.”

One day in early 1996 he proposed a trip to Georgia to visit his mother and to pick up a preserved 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger 340 – a lime green beauty much like his first car. Steve’s widowed mother, Jane, had relocated from Delaware to Georgia more than a decade earlier. Her significant other, Russ, had purchased the Dart for Steve from a local. “Russ said it’s in pretty good shape. He checked the car over and fixed a few minor things,” Steve said. “Right now he’s working on the heater.” Heat was a must in February.

I was the shop foreman in a Chrysler dealership by day and a college student by night. I’m a sucker for adventure, but I couldn’t be away for an extended time. I had no choice but to decline.

Steve didn’t see it that way. “I got a deal on plane tickets,” he said over the phone a few days later. He was talking fast so I couldn’t interrupt. “We’ll fly out of Baltimore Sunday morning, catch a connecting flight in Charlotte, and then land in Spartanburg. My Mom will pick us up, take us to her house, and we’ll be on the road by noon. It’s a 12 hour drive so we’ll be back by midnight.” He paused to let it sink in, but only for a moment. Knowing I’d object, he rattled on, “And if things go wrong, I got round trip tickets. We can change our departure time for the return trip for $50 a ticket and fly home that night.” Damn it, he knew how to defuse any argument I could muster! This was not my first inkling he might be crazy, but I just couldn’t say no.

Our bumpy red-eye from Baltimore to Charlotte was via a DC-9 – a school bus with wings. We were to depart Charlotte an hour later, but an overhead monitor showed our connecting flight had been cancelled. “We booked you on a later flight,” the information desk attendant stated as if she had personally done us a favor. Steve voiced his displeasure but the attendant sat stone-faced, unfazed. It seemed her job was to take grief from angry travelers, and she was good at it.

We should have landed ninety miles away in Spartanburg an hour and a half later. We realized that we could rent a car and arrive on schedule. Within minutes we were thumping down the interstate at breakneck speed in a ragged Cavalier with one misshapen tire. The Greenville-Spartanburg airport was an unimposing facility half the size of a rural high school. We scanned the parking lot but failed to locate Jane’s car. We dashed up and down every corridor and searched the waiting areas and the café, but there was no sign of her. In this pre-cell phone era, we could only assume she’d left upon learning we’d been moved to a later flight. Three hours later she appeared with Russ in tow, moments before our rescheduled flight landed. “We saw your flight was canceled, so we went shopping,” Jane said. Russ looked exhausted. It was now after noon.

As we drove, Russ disclosed the specifics of the Dart, and the more he said, the more uneasy I became. “It was sitting ‘bout 10 years. The boy pushed it into the woods when he parked it, but we drug it out and got it running. It runs real good, but it don’t always shift into high gear. If I didn’t mention it, it’s got a little sore spot on the left side near the back. And I didn’t get the heater finished, but it’s in the trunk.” With the heater missing, I knew there was a stovepipe-sized hole in the firewall that would channel cold air and engine fumes into the passenger’s crotch. “It’s been warm so you shouldn’t need heat.” Indeed, northern Georgians were enjoying unseasonably warm 60 degree highs, but in Delaware the highs were in the

20s and the ground was snow covered. I wanted to punch Steve.

When we pulled up at Jane’s place, the excitement on Steve’s face faded to horror. There sat his Dart on decayed tires, its sagging rear springs lending a nose-up attitude, its body and windows chalked green with woods funk. And that “little sore spot” turned out to be a foot-deep crater where the quarter panel appeared to have been clobbered by a dump truck. The collision had folded the rear bumper, leaving it jutting behind the car.

We scrubbed the windows and headed north as the sun hung low in the western sky. The worn suspension made it difficult to stay in one lane, and a makeshift roadside alignment did little to improve the handling. Even so, it ran surprisingly well—right up to the moment that it quit. Sediment from the rusted gas tank had clogged the fuel pick-up, and despite several mouthfuls of rotten gasoline, our attempts to remedy the condition on the side of the road proved futile. The sun was sinking fast.

While we pondered our plight, a roll-back pulled up behind us. In short order, the operator loaded the ailing Dart and took us back to the airport where we would implement Steve’s contingency plan to fly home. He would arrange to have the Dart transported later. We unloaded the car after dark and ran inside to catch a plane, but the desk attendant informed us that the $50 deal was valid only if we re-booked our return flights for some time after Tuesday because the tickets wouldn’t become valid until that day. If we wanted to fly home that night, it would cost over $600 each. Steve ranted again, but she remained as cool and emotionless as the attendant we’d encountered in Charlotte. It was as if they were sisters. Soon we were bound for home in another rented car, thankfully this time with four round tires. We alternated driving and sleeping, but somewhere near Richmond I confused the two. I awoke to Steve’s shouts only to realize I was driving.

As the sun of a new day overtook the darkness, I collapsed onto his couch, blinked, then headed to work. It was our best trip ever!

Many of our crime-fighting comic book heroes seem to tool around in a fancy car, and the Batmobile is arguably the most popular.

But I believe the real life heroes in our society are the men and women of our police departments. I’ve always respected the courage of police officers, and how each day they put their lives on the line for us. So, I decide to do something to show my appreciation for the members of the Vineland Police Department.

I approached Century Savings Bank and we agreed to donate funds to have a 1:64 scale VPD car made to give to every officer in the city.

What better way for a car guy and local banking institution to show their appreciation than to give someone their own car.

Cars for a Cure Car ShowMembers of the car community gathered on a cool March day to

support a very worthwhile cause. The “Cars for a Cure” car and bike show took place in Blackwood, N.J., and participants brought out 130 cars to raise funds for pediatric cancer research.

Blackwood Plaza was packed with rides as people enjoyed great food, music and helping a charity. The show headquarters was at Sam’s Bar & Grille and was under the guidance of certifiable car guy Gene Martinez with sponsorship by the Blackwood Fire Company.

The show was held in conjunction with St. Baldrick’s, an organization that supports childhood cancer research. They hosted a head-shaving ceremony, in which many donors and sponsors had the chance to give to a cause—and receive a smooth pate. A total of $45,000 was raised that day – a number that shows how people are always ready to help a worthwhile cause and enjoy their car hobby as well.

Salem County Fairgrounds Swap Meet

Swap meets are like treasure ships that people have the opportunity to explore. The goodies you may find in places like the scenic 42nd annual South Jersey swap meet and car corral can be like gold in the mother lode.

Located at the Salem County Fairgrounds in Woodstown, N.J., the event hosted 360 automotive vendors and a car corral—with one huge selection of rides up for grabs. This is a “real” swap meet, in which car enthusiasts clean out their garages full of car parts and automobile-related items.

The South Jersey Region AACA put this together, and let me tell you: this is a big event drawing enthusiasts from up to five surrounding states. If you are looking for the largest car garage sale in the Garden State, this is definitely the place to visit.

The classic car season was ushered in with the Spring Thaw Car Cruise held at the Main Tree Shopping parking lot in Vineland, N.J.

This unofficial season opener brought out 475 cruisers with their special rides. It was an event that drew cars from all over South Jersey and Delaware.

A mild spring day, the sounds of a DJ playing those golden oldies and conversations with friends in the car community made for the perfect launch of the season.

The cruise was staged by the South Jersey Cruisers Association in cooperation with the Acme market.

St. Isidore’s Church 2nd Annual Car Show

Cruisers go to car shows to enjoy their hobby and share time with friends and fellow cruisers. Some shows are so much fun that even the king of rock and roll takes time out from his busy schedule to enjoy the cars.

The second annual St. Isidore’s Car Show in Vineland, N.J., had a lot of fine cars and the cruisers enjoyed a good time while witnessing one of the best Elvis tribute artists ever (Doug Church).

Now, how many car shows have a car owners’ outing and get the “King” himself to participate at an event?

Carlisle Events hosts 13 Pennsylvania-based shows annually and 17 overall. As the summer months arrive, the energy level increases exponentially at the Carlisle Fairgrounds with the arrival of four great events. First, Carlisle’s Summer of Muscle showcases some of the best from Detroit as part of the Carlisle Ford Nationals, Carlisle GM Nationals and Carlisle Chrysler Nationals. Those three events are capped by Carlisle Bike Fest, a weekend that welcomes open- air enthusiasts who ride all types of two- and three-wheeled machines.

The Carlisle Ford Nationals kick start the summer fun and run June 7-9. The weekend hosts nearly 3,000 machines and offers everyone the chance to win an X302-crate engine, register for a 2013 Ford Raptor (two-year lease), or take part in exciting ride-alongs with Miller Motorsports Park and Ford Racing. There are also demo rides, a high-performance 289 display, 20 years of SVT celebration, special guest Steve Saleen, a downtown parade and more.

After a week off, the fairgrounds once again come to life, June 12-13 with the Carlisle GM Nationals. There will be a special Turbo Buick display, Cacklefest with NHRA Hall of Famer Bruce Larson, a special Saturday only get-together with NASCAR Hall of Famer Bobby Allison and more. Guests can also enjoy a special movie double feature in downtown Carlisle with a documentary called Black Air. This film tells the story of the Buick Grand National. The second film is the Burt Reynolds flick, Cannonball Run. GM weekend also features test drives, autocross, drag racing and family fun, too.

Mopar Excitement is up next and the Carlisle Chrysler Nationals take place July 12-14. This year, celebrate 30 years of the horror flick Christine as well as welcome Sonny Shroyer (Enos) from the Dukes of Hazzard. The Christine gathering features five cast members from the film, including Keith Gordon who played the lead, Arnie. There will also be a Fury onsite that was used during the move. On the automotive side, the survivors display returns as does the Mopar Collectors Guide Hall of Fame inductions. There’s also a Max Wedge reunion and just like the two shows before it, a burnout completion and beauty contest.

Finally, Carlisle Bike Fest wraps the month of July. The event, July 19-21, celebrates all things open air. There are two motorcycle giveaways, onsite competitions, live music, demo rides, family fun and more. In addition, Appalachian Harley-Davidson returns with its dealer mall. This allows enthusiasts to pick up a new or consigned bike, plus shop for the latest apparel.

Hey gang, Show season is really cranked

up now, and with all that cold, nasty weather behind us, it’s time to start enjoying our rides. Check out all the show dates in this issue—there are hundreds of shows and cruises just waiting for you. I hope to see you at one soon.

During the dreadful winter months, I attended two events where

car clubs and organizations had a chance to promote their events for 2013. First was the Inter-club meeting hosted by our very own “Cruising News” with Larry Lazareff, our MC for the day. This meeting was very well attended and as I said earlier, all the car clubs and organizations had a chance to talk about their schedules for 2013. I can tell you: 2013 is going to be packed with shows and cruises seven days a week. At this event, Tony Sceia and I had a chance to speak about our presidents’ meetings that we hold throughout the year, and about clubs that support other clubs.

Our current group of presidents met on April 14 with about 15 presidents in attendance. During dinner we discussed everything from costs at events to the several events scheduled every night of the week. We promoted clubs that support clubs and the charities that we all represent. We certainly invite and hope more presidents join us. All are welcome—just contact Tony Sceia at [email protected] or me at [email protected].

It’s important for all to note that shows and cruises, no matter how big or small, have expenses. Part of the presidents’ discussions concerned products that can help save money for clubs, from dash plaques to trophies. We promote having our club members support other local clubs’ events, rather than some “pop-up” show that has no cause behind it. A couple members of the Delaware car clubs thought this presidents “get-together” was an idea they may consider for themselves in the future. If talking one on one can save you money and get more cars to your events, then the mission has been accomplished.

I also attended the “Showfinder” meeting in Burlington County hosted by Tom Szymczyk and Frank Staff. Again, it was a very well attended program where everyone had a chance to discuss their shows and cruises not only in South Jersey but in the Central Jersey area. Tom and Frank were also gracious enough to allow Tony and me to speak on our presidents’ “get-together” where the message was again received with positive reactions.

We thank everyone for the opportunity to pass the word along. I need to remind you that the mission of the presidents’ round table is not to exclude anyone from this wonderful hobby, but to promote awareness when planning an event so that your event and others around you can be as successful as possible. It’s definitely not easy to plan an event, but it is easy to reach out to investigate your possibilities with established organizations that have been doing this for a long time. Car clubs are made up of wonderful people who are always willing to help. If you are thinking about promoting a show or a cruise then you must first attend a show or cruise to get a feel of what it’s all about and ask the right questions.

Finally, let’s not lose sight of why we participate in this wonderful hobby. It’s all about fun. Don’t ever take the fun out of it.

One observation I’ve made in my garage interview travels: the groups of car guys hanging out and helping each other. When I was at the Delco Cruisers Show last fall, I met a group of fellows wearing jackets that said “The Garage Guys, West Chester, Pa.” As we talked, they invited me to hang out with them on their meeting night. This is not a formal club – no dues, no officers, but one rule: just 14 members are permitted.

Between them all, they have 34 street rods and one old Chevy stock car. When I arrived at Gary Green’s garage it was like a mini car show with all types of street rods; Model A’s, ’32 Ford coupes and roadsters, and a ’36 Ford coupe. They have been meeting like this for 10 years now. They simply come out to have some pizza, beer, soda, and some good bench racing. What a good time I had with these fellows – the stories they told could have filled a four-hour radio show. Needless to say, I have to go back in the future.

Since Cruising News has been condensed to four issues, I squeezed in another garage visit. This time I was on the Jersey side of the river in Sewell, N.J., at Jim

Hemphill’s garage. At Jim’s, I found the same deal. When I arrived, a yard full of old cars and trucks greeted me – mainly old school hot rods, race cars and motorcycles. Jim was working on restoring a ¾ midget race car that was originally built by his father-in-law in 1965. The motor is out of a Triumph motorcycle. He also had a friend’s 1937 Ford two-door sedan on his lift, replacing the quick change rear. Jim’s own cars include a 1941 two-door hot rod, a 1937 Ford two-door, a 1959 Ford four-door, a 1966 Ford Mustang GT, and he is restoring a 1957 Flat Tracker motorcycle.

Some of the drivers and cars that showed up that night were John Genther with his ’51 Ford pickup, Steve Robertson in his ’32 Ford three-window coupe, and The Moonshine Runner, Bob Belh, and his 1939 Ford two-door sedan. All the stories and histories of these rides made for a great cast of characters, which goes to prove that old friends plus old cars equals good times!

The Place To Be:The 15th Annual Merchantville Car Show

Ladies and gentlemen, one of South Jersey’s largest car shows and family events is revving up in beautiful downtown Merchantville. The Merchantville 15th Annual Summer Sock Hop, Car and Bike Show will take place on Saturday, June 29 (two weeks earlier than in previous years, with a rain date set for Saturday, July 6).

The other major change is the time. This year, car registration will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon, and the show will be from noon to 5 p.m.

The famed Elvis impersonator, Mark Reno, will be here performing the best of Elvis. Our annual car show has a ’50s Sock Hop and Theme, where more than 800 cars and motorcycles come to compete for one of the 26 “Best in Show” 6.5’ trophies. In addition, more than 400 additional trophies are awarded. The first 800 cars and bikes to show up will get a free commemorative dash plaque. This show features a unique award class, the “Combination Class,” where you can enter any combination of two different vehicles (bike, truck or car).

Additional live entertainment will be held throughout the town, including the famous rockabilly band Full Blown Cherry and other great singers performing throughout the day. There will be nine DJs and a main stage area for the following contests: dance, singing, hula hoop, and best dressed in ’50s style.

This is a “fun for all” family event, which includes the following events for children: magic shows, a petting zoo, a moon bounce, pony-drawn cart rides, face painting, and rock wall climbing.

One of the main highlights of the day is our spectacular Veteran’s Ceremony. At 2 p.m., the entire town and all the entrants gather at the gazebo as Bob Paterson performs a moving and emotional rendition of our country’s National Anthem. The ceremony sets the bar for any ceremony, anywhere. We have bagpipers, mummers, the Marine Color Guard, and a food drive to round out the day.

The Cherry Valley Rail Road Club will host an open house exhibit in the Grace Episcopal Church basement. The famous Merchantville Car Show T-shirt will be sold for only $10 the day of show. We will have a 50/50 raffle (several people will be walking around the show selling the 50/50 tickets. The drawing will be at 5 p.m. at the gazebo. Participants must be present to win).

Every year we honor the memory of someone special to the car show. This year there will be a special tribute to Rob English, Corvette restoration specialist. We will have a section for all Corvettes – and plenty of awards.

So, polish those hubcaps, put on your blue suede shoes, grab the family, and cruise on over to the Merchantville Car Show and Summer Sock Hop.

Two terms often pop up in the car owners’ language: “old school” and “traditional.” Now, you might think these terms are easy to define, but let’s look at them and see just how fuzzy their interpretations can be.

Let’s look at an old school ride. When many people think of old school cars, they probably think of things like chrome reverse wheels, scalloped paint or a set of spot lights. This would be accented with a tuck and roll interior. The engine would be a traditional carbureted or a period-correct fuel injection system. Then, said mill would be coupled to a fourspeed or automatic transmission.

Now, let us look at the word “traditional.” Again, we have period-correct pieces on a car that reflect a time when parts and accessories were more accessible at the local bone yard or the thin aftermarket catalogs. On a street rod (Remember when they were called hot rods?) that could be a flat gray primer paint job, Mexican blanket upholstery and any engines available at the time. Again, carburetion was generally what the market had available to bare. Many times the wheels were painted a contrasting color to the car.

I’m sure that there are many other interpretations of traditional and old school, and we can debate their semantics long into the night, but here is where the gray area comes into play.

If a car is made with newly manufactured parts, has a fiberglass reproduction body and is made to look like a traditional car such as a ’32 Ford coupe, is it a real traditional or old school ride, or is it a new car?

Do these two terms represent a car made in the “old” days, or do they apply to today’s reproduction of yesterday’s cars?

I’m sure this question will haunt mankind for decades and people will have many sleepless nights thinking about it.

Now for this writer’s thoughts on the topic. I’ll take a traditional or old school ride no matter when its parts were manufactured. It still keeps the genre alive.

Department of Cruises: Mighty Joe’s in Shamong, N.J., is a cool place to purchase racing fuel, great food and to sit at a cruise, every Monday evening (except holidays). Department of Super Cruises: In Vineland, N.J., there is a cruise that, by police estimates, hosted 2,000 cars. Participants cruised Woodward Ave., South Jersey style. Check the ad in this issue.

Department of “What It’s All About”: Like trophies? Annoyed you did not get one at an event? If you saw a friend at a show, or you smiled, talked and shared some time, then you won a trophy. Put it on the mantle of your heart and I promise you it will never get dusty or tarnish. Department of Fun: Get a group and set up a visit to a rod shop or restoration shop. Department of DooWop: Listen to WVLT Cruisin’ 92.1 FM for music of the ’50s, and tune in every Tuesday evening at 8 p.m. to listen to fellow Cruising contributor, John Quinn, and yours truly on our program “Show and Go Garage.”

Last but not least – roll the windows down, crank up the oldies station and cruise into summer 2013.

Well, summer has finally arrived. It’s my favorite season, and luckily heat doesn’t bother me too much – but I’d still like to talk about it.

We are all getting older. I’m not saying we’re over the hill, but try climbing

Carlisle these days in the late afternoon after a day of hiking. I know many of us remember traipsing the 14 miles when we were not-so-old, but now we’re especially grateful for the benches. I’ll be the first to admit: the “golden years” are not what we were told about when we were kids! Do you agree?

All of us will be attending as many shows as possible, though, which means we should drink plenty of fluids and take our time. For those attending with an ice chest in the back of their cars, keep your eyes out for someone who may be looking a bit peaked; it won’t hurt to offer a cool drink. And for those hosting the event, offering an open tent or a couple cases of water would be appreciated by attendees. Take care of those volunteers working the event, too. They often are too busy to notice the effects of the summer sun.

This summer issue has more events than usual, and I want to thank George Rust and many others who took time to clean flyers out of their cars and send them to me.

Hopefully, we will venture out of our backyards and enjoy some events that we’ve never been to or have forgotten about. This calendar is all about offering you options.
