Cruise Planning
Why?
• Doesn’t the PI do all the planning?– Overall – Yes– The tech may be call upon to help plan sensor
setups– Up to the tech to actually do the deployment
Cruise Track
• Where are you going to sample?– Station Locations
• Do Not use GoogleEarth!!– GPS coordinates are not always accurate– Does not do water depths
• Use a charting program– NOAA
» Free programs and charts
• MatLab works for gridding stations– Still would plot on a chart to help with depths
GPS Positions
• Positive is North and East• Negative is South and West• Types of Positions
– Degrees Minutes Seconds (DMS)• 300 22’ 26.60”N x 890 36’ 46.22” W• 300 22’ 26.60” x -0890 36’ 46.22”
– Degrees Minutes.m• 300 22.4433N x 890 36.7703W• 3022.4433 x -08936.7703
– Decimal Degrees• 30.37405 x 89.612838
GPS Positions
• Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM)– Define two dimensional, horizontal positions– Divided the earth into Zones
• Zone number designate 6 degree Longitude strips from 800 South latitude to 840 North latitude
• Special zone between 00 and 360 longitude above 720 latitude• Special zone 32 between 560 and 640 north latitude
– Easting is measured from Central meridian– Northing is measured from Equator

GPS Positions
• What type of position do you need?– Degree Minutes.m
• Captains will make you go convert
Cruise Track
• Do not plan track on ships max speed
• Be prepared to alter track– Weather causes delays– Sampling takes longer at each station
• What are the drop stations– Maybe just need to cut what you sample at
some stations
