Money has been set aside from the new Bishop Auckland retail centre to support local businesses to take on apprentices. Following the 40 jobs created by Home Bargains in April and the 40 to 60 jobs expected to be created by TK Maxx when it opens later this year, the Tindale Crescent development is continuing to contribute to the local economy. Some £48,000 is available to help local employers to expand their businesses and provide new employment opportunities for 16-24 year olds in the Bishop Auckland and Shildon areas. To date 18 employers have been helped to provide 22 apprenticeships, ranging from engineering to business administration and warehousing. Cllr Neil Foster, Cabinet member for economic regeneration, said, “It is wonderful that so many apprentices have already been taken on by local businesses as a first step into the world of work. There is still the opportunity for others to do the same and help boost the local economy.” Funding is still available so if you want more information about whether your business is eligible for up to £2,500 funding to take on an apprentice then contact the employability team at Durham County Council on 03000 262009. Just before her retirement, on Wednesday 16th July, Mrs Henderson, along with four other teachers, organised a fun event for the 2 – 4 year-old youngsters at the school, who performed circus acts in front of their families.

The pupils, along with the teachers, were dressed in fabulous outfits and became circus sellers, circus jugglers and circus dancers. They had been practising the show, which was a huge success, for around

six weeks and it was highly appreciated by the parents and guardians. On the day there were two separate performances, with 26 pupils involved in the morning session and the same number for the afternoon show.

Local girl, Vivienne Henderson, a teacher at Timothy Hackworth Primary School, retired on Friday 18th July after 29 years of loyal service. Vivienne, 60, was born in Shildon but now lives in Leasingthorne with her husband Gordon. She said she has thoroughly enjoyed her time at the school, especially teaching the foundation stage

youngsters. She said she will miss the children and all the staff. For her last day at work the school has organised a party with a magician, while on Saturday 12th July she celebrated her retirement with a meal with all the staff at The Pavilion restaurant in Consett. She plans to relax a little and take some holidays,

as well as looking after her two grandchildren. Head teacher Anne Dockray said, “Mrs. Henderson is retiring after 29 years as a teacher and she has taught more than one generation of many families. She has been a dedicated and thorough professional and we are very sad that she is leaving, but wish her every happiness for her retirement.”

The smell of burgers cooking and the shouts of happy children turned Shildon’s Community Garden into a garden of laughter and delights on Saturday 12th July. Around 75 people took advantage of the sunshine, calling into the garden to see what was going on. With children’s games, a

tombola, bug hunts and some gardening fun, the afternoon was non-stop.Revd David commented, “The Community Gardens are a part of our Shildon Alive! project. With a disabled toilet, polytunnel and meeting room on site, the Furnace Pit garden has gone from strength-to-strength, with people of all ages and

abilities coming together to learn and grow together.”Whilst the BBQ was not about fundraising, over £170 in donations came in anyway, every penny of which is reinvested in the project. “Shildon”, said Shildon’s Paula Nelson and the projects Community Development Worker, “really is alive!”

It is rally season and staff at Locomotion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon, are inviting owners of motorcycles, trikes and historic fire engines to display their vehicles at the forthcoming Bikes and Trikes Rally, taking place on Sunday 10th August, 2014, and the Fire Engine Rally on Sunday 31st August.Locomotion would welcome vehicles of all ages at the rallies. Previous Bikes and

Trikes events have seen everything from a 1930s style Morgan/BSA Replica, built by the owner using Citroen 2CV parts, to a 1993 Yamaha Virago trike. While fire engine rallies have seen both fire engines and historic fire safety equipment on display. If you are a vehicle owner and would like to take a vehicle or relevant display to the rally events, simply email [email protected], or call 01388 771439.

A&R ELEcTRIcS GROUP

Eight groups to benefit from fans fund

Eight local community groups, including the Shildon Town Crier, are to benefit from the latest round of grant funding by Shildon AFC Supporters’ Club Lotto. The lottery, set up in 2013 to raise funds for the supporters’ club and to provide grants to small projects, is awarding £100 each to the eight groups. As well as the Crier, which will use the money to purchase new delivery bags, money has also been granted to two local jazz bands to help them attend the forthcoming World Championships in Wales; the 4th Shildon Brownies; the Shildon People's Centre; Shildon Railway

CC Under 13s for new equipment, and the New All Saints BP Scouts Group in order to fund a visit to the Vatican to meet the Pope (who wrote inviting them to visit) while on Jamboree in Italy. The groups will all be sending representatives to the Shildon v Stranraer friendly match on Friday 18th June in order to pick up their cheques, with the Shildon Jubilee Jazz Band also providing pre-match entertainment on the pitch from 6.30pm.The match kicks off at 7.30pm and all the groups will receive their grant cheques during the half time interval. The game is Shildon's

first home friendly of the season and comes against high profile opposition in the Scottish League One side, who narrowly missed out on promotion to the Scottish Championship last season after losing in the play-off game against Dunfermline Athletic.Entry to the game is just £4 for adults and £2 for concessions, with under 12s free when accompanied by a paying adult. Also on display will be the Durham Challenge Cup, which Shildon won for the first time in 41 years last season, beating Northern League champions Spennymoor Town in the final.

Replica Sans Pareil on the move to Dutch Museum

Specialist contractors have been working at Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon, to prepare the museum’s replica locomotive Sans Pareil for a visit to the Dutch National Railway Museum in Utrecht. The original Sans Pareil locomotive was built at Timothy Hackworth’s Shildon workshops in 1829, and took part in the famous Rainhill Trials for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, alongside Ste-phenson’s Rocket. In 1979, apprentices at British Rail Engineering Ltd’s Shildon workshops built a working replica of the locomotive. The replica was first steamed in April 1980, and then took part in the Rocket 150

celebration cavalcade at Rainhill, Merseyside. Both the original locomotive and the replica have been on display at Locomotion since the museum opened in 2004.Specialist contractors from Allelys Heavy Haulage worked at Locomotion overnight on Tuesday 8th July to extract the replica locomotive from its position in the museum display.Working with Locomotion’s railway operations team, the skilled crew carefully jacked up the locomotive to lift the wheels clear off the rails. It was then placed on specialist skates and moved sideways from one track to the next. This made it possible for the locomotive to be

shunted to the front of the museum’s Collection Building, ready for loading onto a low loader. The locomotive then travelled by road and ferry to the Dutch National Railway Museum in Utrecht. 2014 is the 175th anniversary of railways in the Netherlands, and to celebrate, the Dutch National Railway Museum is hosting a series of special exhibitions. The ‘Icons of the Track’ exhibition is open from July 21st to September 21st, and will feature a number of iconic European locomotives from the early days of the railways. More information on the ‘Icons of the Track’ exhibition can be found at www.spoorwegmuseum.nl.

Scott Vickers was released on unconditional bail, to appear at Durham Crown Court on 6th August, after pleading guilty to a charge of producing cannabis. The 25 year-old of Hopelands, Heighington, claimed that the cannabis was for his own personal use but the Crown argued that the growth was on a commercial scale and the District Judge, at Newton

Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court, agreed with this view.On 6th April, police had carried out a search at an address in Foundry Street, Shildon, where they found twenty one plants and various items associated with their production. The defendant was warned that a prison sentence in excess of twelve months was possible in the case.

Resident Evelyn Wood celebrated her 102nd birthday on 9th July, and was delighted when the children sang Happy Birthday to her.

Holly Lodge Care Home on Maddison Street, Shildon, enjoyed a visit from children of Thornhill Primary School on Tuesday 8th July. The youngsters sang songs for the residents from the musical Matilda, and also sang Happy Birthday to resident Evelyn May Wood, who turned 102 the

following day.A spokesperson commented, “The residents always look forward to the children visiting and performing their latest song for them. We would like to thank all the children who visited and hope they will be able to return to sing for us again.”

Children were labelled like pieces of luggage, separated from their parents and accompanied instead by a small army of guardians and taken to a place of safety in the countryside; the grounds of Kiplin Hall in North Yorkshire.Upon arrival at the ‘Camp’, bewildered children lined up at the Evacuation Centre to register, receive their ration book and instruc-tions on how to construct their gas mask box, followed by a practical

display on how to wear their gas mask should the sirens wail. But it’s not September 1939, but July 2014. It’s not the evacuation of thousands of children, but for All Saint’s Cubs it’s the Wolf Cubs Annual Camp, attended by 86 children and 40 leaders. Each year a theme is chosen, and this year it was ‘Evacuees’. A Cub spokesperson commented, “Scouting is more than knots and hikes, it’s about having fun, and for leaders it’s

about bringing history alive and creating a hands-on experience.”Children and leaders dressed the part, and over the weekend had a variety of 1940s themed activities to take part in, as they learnt about the war on the ‘Home Front’. Rationing struck many of the children as they had the opportunity to see some of the portions allowed per week. However there was no risk of bombers; the only aeroplanes flying were ‘paper’ ones!

Graham Lawton, of South Row, Eldon, pleaded guilty to two charges of using threatening words and behaviour when he appeared before the District Judge at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court recently. The court heard that, on 18th June, the 35 year-old had been abusive to two PCSOs who were on mobile patrol.

Lawton had shouted at the officers, “Prefects. You can’t arrest me,” as numerous members of the public looked on. Later that same day, Lawton arrived at the front desk of Bishop Auckland Police Station demanding to know “who was in charge of the specials?” Lawton became angry and threatening and later in police interview

he expressed remorse, describing himself as mouthy but not violent.Lawton was found also to be in breach of a conditional discharge imposed by the court in July 2013. In sentencing the District Judge imposed fines and costs of £248 and asked the defendant why he had acted in such a manner. Lawton replied “I’m stupid.”

Year 6 girls Leah Rutherford and Chloe Fairclough competed

in the 75mtrs and Long Jump with Leah securing 3rd position in the Jump whilst Chloe managed a PB in the 75mtrs. Chloe also ran in the 600mtrs but was a couple of seconds under par.At the English Schools event held in Birmingham on the 11th & 12th July, Lizzie Cramb and Amy Etherington both represented Durham in the 800mtrs. Lizzie Cramb ran in the Junior Girls category finishing in the excellent time of 2.21.20. Amy Etherington, who also coaches in the middle distance group at the club ran in the Senior Girls race and ran well in her heat with a time of 2.20.51. At the Hackworth Parkrun on July 12th Ryan Watson ran well finishing 4th overall in a time 20:04 and first in his age category.Chloe Fairclough revisited Sedgefield Park run in an

attempt to reclaim her age group course record and did just that by taking the new Under 11 female record down to 21.34 from 22.43.David Johnston competed in Gateshead 10k on July 13th in a time of 45.39. Shildon’s Senior Group competed in the 22 hour Relay for Life at Monkton Stadium in Jarrow in order to raise money for cancer research. A great weekend was had at Warwick University on the 12th & 13th of this month with Team North East taking the honours for the first time in the English Federation of Disability Sports National Junior Athletics Cham-pionship. Some fantastic examples of courage and team spirit with Shildon’s Erica Dixon (U16) picking up Gold in the 1500m, Silver in the 400m and Silver in the 200m.

Having a free Saturday during the cricket season is unusual, to say the least, but the rest seemed to do the Shildon Railway side a favour, as they romped to victory in Sunday’s league game. Asked to bat, after losing the toss, the Railwaymen scored 185 for 9 before declaring after 45 overs.Several batsmen at last found a bit of form with skipper Greg Upton (42), Michael Lumley (24), Tom Newton (24) and Bret Upton (22) making the most valuable contributions. In reply, visitors Murton were soon in trouble at 7 for 2, but the middle order rallied before the side was finally bowled out for 120.Robert Nevison’s spin was again to the fore, taking

4 for 44 and Matthew Brown’s 3 for 27 helped get the job done. Unfortunately, heavy rain at the coast meant that the second team’s game at Murton was cancelled, due to the ground being unfit. Friday 18th July sees “the boys in pink,” Shildon Locos, at home to Mainsforth, in the second round of F15 games. On Saturday Seaham Park are the visitors to the Sportsfield for the second team game, whilst the first team make the trip to the coast. On Sunday, a team will take part in the annual Craig Dargue Memorial Day at Mainsforth, when four sides play two semi finals and then a final, in the charity fund raising event.
