What does it include?

The CES Honor Code is actually quite simple. As a matter of personal commitment, faculty, staff, and students of BYU, BYU-Hawaii, BYU-Idaho, and the LDS Business College seek to demonstrate in daily living on and off campus those moral virtues encompassed in the gospel of Jesus Christ. In essence, we try to live by the Thirteenth Article of Faith which states, “We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men …. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things”.

The CES Honor Code• Be honest• Live a chaste and virtuous life• Obey the law and all campus policies• Use clean language• Respect others• Abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee and substance abuse• Participate regularly in church services• Observe Dress and Grooming Standards• Encourage others in their commitment to comply with the Honor Code

Why do we have it?The CES Honor Code exists to educate students in an atmosphere consistent with the ideals and principles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As a condition of admission and employment, students and employees of BYU-Idaho are expected to live by the Honor Code standards approved by the Board of Trustees “at all times… and in all places” (Mosiah 18:9). Individuals who are not members of the Church are also expected to maintain the same standards of honor, integrity, morality, and consideration of others.

How it works at BYU-IdahoEach CES Institution is charged with forming its own policies founded on the standards outlined in the CES Honor Code. These standards are unique to each institution and are defined and approved by the Board of Trustees. Each institution has the discretion to implement standards regarding dress and grooming, housing, academic honesty, etc., that are unique to that institution.

Specific BYU-Idaho Honor Code Standards

• Academic Honesty

WhatWe agree to be completely honest in all our dealings, including class assignments and tests. This means we don’t plagiarize material, fabricate or falsify information, or cheat.

WhyBeing truthful with ourselves and others is a principle of the gospel of Jesus Christ and a central feature of the CES Honor Code. When we are honest in all things, we promise to obey all of these principles fully without compromises. Besides being dishonest, cheating on your schoolwork hurts others, reduces the confidence in receiving a fair education and greatly reduces personal growth and abilities.

• Church Attendance

WhatWe agree to participate and serve in student wards and stakes by consistently attending Sunday services, family home evenings, and activity nights.

WhyBy gathering together and serving in your assigned BYU-Idaho wards you develop Christ-like attributes, responsibility, leadership, and a stronger testimony of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.

• Student Life Standards

WhatThe divide between the standards of the gospel and those of the world continues to widen. There is safety in abiding by gospel standards. We agree to abstain from behavior that conflicts with the CES Honor Code, like

immorality, pornography, violent or sexually explicit entertainment or gambling. We also avoid situations which might compromise our standards and tempt us unnecessarily.

WhyObeying the standards and principles in the CES Honor Code helps us become better disciples of Christ. As we internalize these principles our thoughts, desires and actions change. Our commitment to the Honor Code applies whether we are on campus or off campus, on track or off track. We take it with us wherever we go and whatever we do, just like our baptismal and temple covenants.

• Ecclesiastical Endorsement

WhatWe agree to visit with our bishop annually to certify that we are living in accordance with the 8 CES Honor Code and BYU-Idaho standards.

WhyAs students we promise to abide by the CES Honor Code, the BYU-Idaho Dress and Grooming Standards, the Residential Living Standards, and the Academic Honesty Policy. By fulfilling our responsibilities and reporting on them we develop personal honor and integrity.

• Dress & Grooming Standards

WhatAs students and employees we agree to live by standards of being neat, clean and modest in our dress and appearance as defined by living prophets.

WhyBy living the dress and grooming standards consistent with the teachings of Jesus Christ we show modesty, obedience, self-respect and create a wholesome and professional environment. We also invite virtue, respect and the presence of the Holy Ghost.
