2011 Cougar Football

tUrnoVErS ABoUnD in CoUGAr LoSSPROVO, Utah – The BYU football team couldn’t overcome seven turnovers and fell to the University of Utah 54-10 on Saturday in the Deseret First Duel at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

After BYU took a 10-7 lead in the second quarter Utah went on to score 47 unanswered points and picked up 481 total yards against a tired Cougar defense that spent much of the second half on the field.

“Turnovers played a huge role in game and they just played better,” said head coach Bronco Mendenhall. “When you look at the first half, that was the way I expected the game to go. The first half was much more how we pre-pared the game to go and the second half was not.”

BYU lost six fumbles and threw one interception, several of the turnovers leading directly to Ute scores.

“The turnovers were the critical difference in the game,” Mendenhall said. “There were a lot of differences but those were number one. We will look at anything we can do to improve our football team.”

Quarterback Jake Heaps found his first 300-yard passing game amidst the loss, going 27 of 50 for 305 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Wide receiver Cody Hoffman was also a bright spot, rolling up a career-high 277 all-purpose yards, the sixth-high-est total for a single game in BYU history. Hoffman had a career-high 138 receiving yards on eight catches while returning eight kicks for 139 yards.

Utah got on the board first with its defense. After a bad snap on the Cougars’ first possesion, the Utes’ Derrick Shelby recovered the ball in the BYU end zone for a touchdown to give them the early lead 7-0.

BYU got on the board with nine seconds left in the first quarter and Justin Sorensen hitting a 46-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3.

Heaps finished the first quarter 10 of 15 for 136 yards, a new career-high for one quarter of play. Hoffman also caught five passes in the first half for 98 yards, also a career high for one quarter.

Linebacker Uona Kaveinga forced a fumble on Utah’s first play of the second quarter, hitting Utah receiver DeVonte Christopher and knocking the ball loose. Llinebacker Brandon Ogletree recovered the ball at the BYU 47-yard line.

Heaps and the Cougars picked up their first lead of the game with 6:23 left in the first half. Heaps connected with tight end Austin Holt for a 30-yard gain to get BYU to the Utah 32-yard line and then two plays later Heaps found receiver Ross Apo for a 32-yard touchdown. Sorensen would make the extra point to give BYU a 10-7 lead.

Utah would take the lead back in the air shortly after with a 30-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jordan Wynn to tight end Jake Murphy. After the made extra point Utah would lead 14-10 going in to the break.

The Utes got a quick touchdown to start the second half with Wynn connecting with receiver Dres Anderson for a 59-yard touchdown down the sideline on their first possession. The score extended Utah’s lead to 21-10.

With a 39-yard field goal on their next possession, the Utes would add on, going up 24-10 with 9:11 left in the third quarter.

BYU’s problems would only get worse as the game continued. Turnovers would continue to plague the Cougars with Heaps fumbling at the BYU six-yard line, giving the Utes possession again. This time Utah added a field goal at the start of the fourth quarter, giving them a 33-10 lead. The Utes would run away with the game, scoring three more rushing touchdowns in route to the victory.

FULL HOUSEToday’s attendance of 63,742 is BYU’s first sellout since 2010’s opener versus Washington.

ALL OVER THE FIELDSophomore receiver Cody Hoffman dialed up 277 all-purpose yards, the 6th-best total in BYU history. Hoffman had 138 yards receiving, also a career high, on eight catches along with 139 yards on eight kickoff returns. Hoffman was the last Cougar to record a 100-yard receiv-ing game, doing so last year against UTEP.

NEW CAREER HIGHSophomore quarterback Jake Heaps set a career high with 305 yards passing, the first 300+ game of his career. Heaps’ 27 completions also tied a career high set last year against Utah State

CHEWING UP YARDAGEQuarterback Jake Heaps threw for 136 yards and receiver Cody Hoffman had 98 yards receiving in the first quarter – career highs for a single quarter by each player. Punter Riley Stephenson’s 65-yard punt to end the first half is also a new career high for the junior.

HOME OPENERSUnder Bronco Mendenhall BYU is in 4-3 in its home openers. The Cougars had previously won four-straight home openers when playing a Pac-12 team. Today’s game also marks the sixth time BYU has opened at home against an in-state team with a record of 2-4 in those games.

COUGH IT UPJunior linebacker Brandon Ogletree’s fumble recovery in the second quarter extended BYU’s streak of forcing a turnover to eight-straight games. It was Ogletree’s second career fumble recovery.

NO RUNNING STARTBYU has held its last 10 opponents to 30 yards rushing or less in the first quarter. Utah ran for just five yards in the opening frame, the lowest total for a BYU opponent since UTEP’s minus-26.

RUNNING OUT THE FLAGBYU was led out of the tunnel today by sophomore wide receiver JD Falslev carrying the team flag and junior defensive back Carter Mees with the special teams flag. All-American tight end Clay Brown (1976-80) carried the alumni flag.

2011 Cougar Football

THE BYU-UCF SERIESThis will be the first game between BYU and UCF. The Cougars and Knights scheduled a home-and-home series beginning with this game. BYU will travel to Orlando in 2014 for the return game.

UCF LAST TIMEMIAMI -- Florida International’s Isame Faciane returned a fumble by Central Florida quarterback Jeff Godfrey 51 yards for a score and Darriet Perry added a touchdown run as the Panthers overcame an injury to star receiver T.Y. Hilton to outlast Central Florida 17-10 Saturday night.

Armed with some favorable field position, FIU moved the ball well on offense early on and got Hilton free over the middle for some early receptions.

Hilton’s day ended with three catches for 30 yards and also carried once for six yards before his injury.

Godfrey was 17 of 27 for 181 yards for the Knights. He also rushed 18 times for 25 yards and had UCF’s lone touchdown.

FIU took its first lead of the game, 14-7, on a 4-yard touchdown run by Darriet Perry with 9:43 left in third quarter. The play was set up by a fumbled punt return by UCF’s Josh Robinson, who has had trouble in cleanly fielding punts in the Knights first two outings this season.

The Panthers added a Jack Griffin 27-yard field goal with 1:41 remaining in the third to push the lead to 10. A late field goal by UCF closed the Knights within 17-10 to provide the final margin.

The Knights punted on their opening possession of the game, before finding traction on their next one. Using an assortment of runs and short passes they reeled off an 18-play, 94-yard drive touchdown drive that ended with a 1-yard plunge by Godfrey to put UCF up 7-0.

FIU responded quickly and drove to the UCF 35 before Hilton’s injury. The drive lost steam after that and ended with Griffin missing a 52-yard field goal.

UCF appeared to be running out the clock in the final minute of the half. But after picking up a few first downs it looked to extend its lead. Facing a 2nd and 15 on FIU’s 34 Godfrey dropped back to pass before being grabbed and sacked by Panthers’ cornerback Tevin Blanchard, forcing a fumble.

It was scooped up by Faciane and returned 51 yards for the score with just 6 seconds left on the clock.

2011 Cougar Football

FLAg BEARERSBYU has a tradition of selecting a player before each game to run the team flag onto the field. This year, the team has included a special teams flag, highlighted by an old school logo adopted by the special teams. In 2008, the team implemented a new tradition—an alumni flag. The team selects a former Cougar to carry out the alumni flag, along with the chosen current

player who runs out with the current team flag. Both flags are white with a blue “Y” logo. The team flag has been signed by each member of the team, while the alumni flag has been signed by former BYU players. Their signatures reflect their commitment to uphold the tradition, spirit and honor of the BYU football program and to be a flag bearer of the University.

Joining Reynolds with the preseason accolades is senior linebacker Jameson Frazier on the Lott Trophy Watch List and senior running back JJ Di Luigi on the Doak Walker Award Watch List. Offensive lineman Terence Brown is recognized as one of the best centers in college football on the Rimington Trophy Watch List. Fellow lineman Braden Hansen joins Reynolds on the Outland Trophy Watch List and quarterback Jake Heaps has also been named to the Davey O’Brien Watch List.

PICk ITUCF has not thrown an interception so far this season. BYU has picked off three passes in its last two games, including two at Texas and one against Utah.

BYU VS. BCS AqSWith the victory over Ole Miss, BYU has defeated a team from a BCS automatic-qualifying confer-ence six-straight years, the third-longest streak in the nation. The Cougars have defeated at least one AQ school 15 of the past 16 years dating back to 1996.

HoME CookIn’Head coach Bronco Mendenhall has often empha-sized the importance of winning at home. Since he has taken the reigns of the program, BYU is 30-7 at home. Last season BYU was 5-1 at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Mendenhall and the Cougars won 18-straight games in Provo from 2006-09.

no RUnnIng STARTAfter holding Utah to to just 5 rushing yards in the first quarter, BYU continued a trend it started last year, now holding its last 10 opponents to 30 yards or less. In its last seven games of 2010 the BYU defense has held its opponents to first-quarter totals of minus-10 (SDSU), 20 (TCU), minus-31 (Wyoming), zero (UNLV), 8 (Colorado St.), 30 yards (New Mexico), 8 yards (Utah) and minus-26 yards (UTEP) rushing, respectively. BYU started 2011 holding opponents to 25 yards (Ole Miss), 29 yards (Texas) and 5 yards (Utah) in the first quarter.

FLoRIDA FoESThis will be the seventh time a BYU teams lines up against a team from the Sunshine State. While Florida State has been a thorn in the Cougars’ side with four losses to the Seminoles, Miami has been the bright spot. BYU lost to the Hurricanes in Miami in 1988 but on the return trip to Provo in 1990, Ty Detmer and the Cougars would get even. Detmer threw for 406 yards and three touchdowns as BYU defeated the No. 1-ranked Hurricanes 28-21 in Provo, jumpstarting Detmer’s Heisman Trophy winning season.

2011 Cougar Footballteam notes

BAnD oF BRoTHERSWhile BYU’s motto is “Band of Brothers,” there are four sets of brothers on the 2011 roster includ-ing Terence (Sr. OL) and Rhen (Jr. WR) Brown, Braden (Jr. OL) and Trevor Brown (Fr. TE), Matt (Sr. OL) and Houston (So. OL) Reynolds, and Iona (So. RB) and Baker (Fr. DL) Pritchard.

In addition, 13 different players, Kevan Bills, Gavin Fowler, Spencer Hafoka, Braden Hansen, Alex Kuresa, Marcus Mathews, Zed Mendenhall, Rex Morgan, Mike Muehlmann, Houston Reynolds, Matt Reynolds, Jordan Richardson and Jadon Wagner also boast brothers who have played for the Cougar football program in the past.

FATHER’S DAYCurrently six BYU players are also fathers, led by senior wide receiver Spencer Hafoka, with two children. Other dads on the team include Matt Reynolds, Travis Uale, Alani Fua and Aveni Leung-Wai.

Nine players also had fathers who played football at BYU: Famika Anae (Robert), Dallin Cutler (Chuck), Gavin Fowler (Blaine), Jameson Frazier (Danny), Colby Hansen (Regan), Carter Mees (Mike), Jordan Pendleton (Kirk), Matt Reynolds (Lance) and Houston Reynolds (Lance).

HoLY MATRIMonYBYU has long held the distinction of having the most married players of any other school in the country. This year is no exception. BYU currently has 32 players who are married.

MAkE YoURSELF CoMFoRTABLEAfter starting with two games on the road, BYU is home for four-straight games. Facing off against UCF is just game two with the Cougars hosting Utah State and San Jose State the following weeks. The last time the Cougars had four home games in a row was in 1991 when BYU had Air Force, Utah State, UTEP and Hawaii all in Provo. The Cougars won all four games during the stretch by a margin of victory of almost 16 points.

HE’S kInD oF A BIg DEALSenior captain and offensive tackle Matt Reynolds returns for his senior season after deciding not to enter the NFL draft despite a first round projection. Reynolds has been rewarded with several preseason accolades, including being named a preseason All-American by by ESPN.com, USA Today, Athlon, CBSCollegeSports.com, Lindy’s, Sporting News and Phil Steele, among others. Along with those honors, Reynolds has recog-nized as an Outland Trophy Candidate, a Lombardi Award Candidate and a Lowe’s Senior Class Award Nominee.

BRIng on THE BCSSince the start of the Bowl Championship Series in 1998, BYU has played at least two BCS-automatic qualifying teams every year. In 2011, the Cougars are playing four BCS schools this year in Ole Miss, Texas, Utah and Oregon State. Only two other seasons (2000 and 2003) has BYU played as many BCS teams. To start the 2011 season the Cougars play three of the four teams consecutively, opening with road games at Ole Miss and Texas before the home opener against Utah. Not since 1998 has BYU started a season against three BCS teams, when the Cougars lost to Alabama and Washington on the road and defeated Arizona State at home.

FRIDAY nIgHT LIgHTSWith BYU playing UCF on a Friday night, as well as Utah State and TCU later in the season, it is the most Friday night games the Cougars have played in the Bronco Mendenhall era. Under Coach Mendenhall, BYU is 2-1 on Friday night games, all coming against Utah State. This is also the first time under Mendenhall that the Cougars are playing back-to-back Friday night games, with Utah State coming after the Knights this week.

CoMIng FRoM ALL oVER THE PLACEWith Utahns dominating the roster, the Cougars have representatives from 17 other states and two countries outside the Unite States, including Canada and Ghana. While some 50 players are from the state of Utah and some have literally traveled within walking distance to attend BYU, junior linebacker Ezekiel Ansah has made the longest journey. Ansah has made his way over 7,000 miles to join the Cougars all the way from Accra, Ghana, in the western part of Africa. BYU has players hailing from the following states and countries, giving them a very diverse geographical background:

• Utah (50)• California (20)• Hawaii (9)• Texas (6)• Washington (4)• Oregon (3)• Idaho (2)• South Carolina (2)• Georgia (1)• Arkansas (1)• Minnesota (1)• Maryland (1)• Alaska (1)• Massachussetts (1)• Colorado (1)• Kansas (1)• Arizona (1)• Nevada (1)• Canada (2)• Ghana (1)

ALwAYS on THE BoARDNot since Sept. 27, 1975, has BYU been shut out away from home (including neutral site games and bowl games). The Cougars failed to score against Arizona State, falling 20-0 in Tempe, Ariz. With the Cougars first score on Saturday at Texas with a Justin Sorensen 30-yard field goal, BYU extends that streak to 244 games over 37 seasons.

BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall, his wife, Holly, and members of the BYU football team will participate in an hour-long devotional prior to eight football games this season.

These devotionals will be conducted prior to all road games as well as the Utah and San Jose State home games. They are referred to as“firesides”andareintendedtohelpplayers, coaches, and those who attend strengthen or gain a knowledge of our purpose here on earth.

currentlY serVinG missions...There are 44 members of the BYU football program currently serving two-year church missions in 17 different coun-tries including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Chile, Democratic Republic of Congo, El Salvador, Fiji, Guatemala, Mexico, New Zealand, Paraguay, Peru, South Korea, Thailand and the United States. Members of the BYU football program who are currently serving missions cover six of the globe’s seven continents and speak a total of seven different foreign languages, including Bulgarian, Cambodian, French, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish and Thai.

serVeD missions...Junior defensive lineman Romney Fuga is one of 73 players (61 percent) on the team roster who has served a church mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Fuga returned home from a mission to Madagascar in the summer of 2009.

Current members of the BYU football team have served missions in a total of 29 countries and one territory, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Germany, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Madagascar, the Marshall Islands, Mexico, Mongolia, Mozambique, New Zealand, Panama, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Russia, Samoa, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, and the United States.

Current members of the BYU football team have served missions in 14 different states, including Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas.

Overall, 50 current members (42 percent) of the BYU football team speak a combined total of 21 different foreign lan-guages and dialects, including Cebuano, Fante, French, Haitian Creole, German, Hawaiian, Italy, Jamaican Patois, Japanese, Korean, Malagasy, Mandarin Chinese, Marshallese, Portuguese, Russian, Samoan, Spanish, Swedish, Tagalog, Tongan and Twi.

WHat is a mission? * The Church’s missionary program is one of its most recognized characteristics. Mormon missionaries can be seen on the streets of hundreds of major cities in the world as well as in thousands of smaller communities. * The missionary effort is based on the New Testament pattern of missionaries serving in pairs, teaching the gospel and baptizing believers in the name of Jesus Christ (see, for example, the work of Peter and Paul in the Bible). * More than 50,000 missionaries are serving missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at any one time. Most are young people under the age of 25, serving in nearly 350 missions throughout the world. * Missionaries can be single men between the ages of 19 and 25, single women over the age of 21 or retired couples. Missionaries work with a companion of the same gender during their mission, with the exception of couples, who work with their spouse. Single men serve missions for two years and single women serve missions for 18 months. * Missionary work is voluntary. Missionaries fund their own missions — except for their transportation to and from theirfieldoflabor—andarenotpaidfortheirservices. * Missionaries receive their assignment from Church headquarters and are sent only to countries where govern-ments allow the Church to operate. Missionaries do not request their area of assignment and do not know before-hand whether they will be required to learn a language. * Prior to going to their assigned area, missionaries spend a short period of time at one of 15 missionary training centers throughout the world. There they learn how to teach the gospel in an orderly and clear way and, if necessary, they begin to learn the language of the people they will be teaching. The largest training center is in Provo, Utah, with additional centers in 14 additional countries including Brazil, England, Ghana, Guatemala, Mexico and Spain.*Malemissionariesareaddressedwiththetitle“Elder”andwomenareaddressedwiththetitle“Sister.” * A typical missionary day begins by waking at 6:30 a.m. for personal study. The day is spent proselytizing by following up on appointments, visiting homes or meeting people in the street or other public places. Missionaries end their day by 10:30 p.m. * In some parts of the world, missionaries are sent only to serve humanitarian or other specialized missions. Those missionaries do not proselytize. * Contacts with family and friends during this time of service are limited to letters and occasional phone calls to family at special times. Missionaries avoid entertainment, parties or other activities common to this age-group as long as they are on their missions, so they can focus entirely on the work of serving and of teaching others the gospel of Jesus Christ.

2011 Cougar Football

Tale of The TapeBYU’s starting offensive line is largely considered to be one of its major team strengths . . . literally. Measuring in at an average of 6-feet-6 inches and over 310 pounds, the offensive line is built to plow the road for a successful running attack and protect the quarterback play of Jake Heaps.

going for a driveBYU’s 97-yard scoring drive, the Cougars’ third drive of the game at Texas, was the team’s longest since a 99-yard drive in the fourth quarter against Utah State in 2006. Since that time, BYU has had nine drives of 90 yards or more.

quarTer TimeQuarterback Jake Heaps and wide receiver Cody Hoffman set new career highs for one quarter of play on Saturday night against Utah. Heaps con-nected on 10 of 15 passes for a quarter career-high of 136 yards. Hoffman caught five passes for a quarter career-high of 98 yards.

no “apo”logieSAfter redshirting in 2010, wide receiver Ross Apo is out to make up for lost time. Through three games he has caught three touchdown passes - BYU’s only three offensive touchdowns of the season. Apo caught a 32-yarder against Utah, a 19-yard score at Ole Miss and a six-yard touchdown at Texas. He had five catches for 54 yards against the Utes and has 12 receptions for 140 yards and three touchdowns this season.

Offensive nOtes

iT’S a reYnoldS ThingBYU has had a tradition of sibling teammates for years. One of the most prominent has been the Reynolds brothers. In fact, the Cougars have had at least one Reynolds brother start on the offensive line every season dating back to 2004. Lance Jr. (2001-05), Dallas (2005-08), Matt (2007-Pres.) and Houston (2009-Pres.) have combined for 114 starts since 2004. Continuing further on the Reynolds’ offensive line, BYU has actually had at least two of the brothers starting together three different seasons with Lance Jr. and Dallas starting 12 games together in 2005, Dallas and Matt starting 13 games in 2008, and with Houston getting the starting nod at Ole Miss, he joined Matt for another Reynolds tag team. As a sophomore this season, it looks like Houston will continue the Reynolds tradition for a few more years.

heapS of TouchdownSWith at least one touchdown pass in each of his first three games of 2011, Jake Heaps has thrown one or more touchdowns in nine-straight games, dating back to Wyoming of 2010. Heaps connected with Ross Apo for a 32-yard touchdown in the first half against Utah. The sophomore finished the day 27 of 50 for a career-high 305 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

“holT”ing Your aTTenTionTight end Austin Holt has been quietly becomong the premier tight end for the young 2011 season. The 6-foot-5, 247-pounder caught one pass against Utah for 30 yards, a career long, to set up a 32-yard BYU touchdown reception later on. Every pass Holt has caught this season has gone for a first down. He has five catches for 97 yards for the season.

Touchdown connecTionFor the third-straight game, the only offensive touchdowns have come from Jake Heaps and Ross Apo hookups. Heaps hit Apo against Utah for a 32-yard touchdown pass and at Texas for a 6-yard score and in game one at Ole Miss the duo connected for a 19-yarder.

Second go aroundThroughout history BYU’s second-year full-time starters have really flourished. Here is a break down of notable Cougar second-year starters:Player Record Year Comp Attempts TD YardsMark Wilson 11-1 1979* 250 427 29 3,720 Jim McMahon 11-2 1981** 272 423 30 3,555Steve Young 11-1 1983 306 429 33 3,902Ty Detmer 10-3 1989 265 412 32 4,560Steve Sarkisian 14-1 1996 278 404 33 4,027Max Hall 10-3 2008 330 477 35 3,957*Wilson battled injury for much of 1978 and started on and off, splitting time with McMahon** who redshirted the 1979 season and then started full-time for the first time in 1980

60 percenT of The Time . . . Jake Heaps has completed 73 of 126 passes through three games of the 2011 season for a completion per-centage of 58 percent. All-American BYU quarterbacks have always been accurate and Heaps will be in good company if he can get his percentage above 60. Ty Detmer, Steve Young, Jim McMahon, Steve Sarkisian and Robbie Bosco all had completion percentages above 60 for their BYU careers.

geTTing open for The Score

The wide receivers have been able to find the end zone for BYU and quarterback Jake Heaps for nine-straight games. Heaps has three touchdown throws in the first three games, all going to wide receiver Ross Apo. All 15 touchdown passes for Heaps in 2010 went to wide receivers. While Apo appears to be the target of choice this year, Heaps’ favorite target in 2010 was Cody Hoffman who grabbed seven touchdowns.

moving on upQuarterback Jake Heaps got somewhat of a baptism by fire early in the 2010 season but progressed nicely to end up with 15 touchdowns in his freshman season to set a freshman record. With three more games under his belt for 2011, Heaps is steadily moving up the ranks of the top quarterbacks to play at BYU. He has 722 passing yards in three games this year and 3,038 for his career. With his freshman head start, by the end of his Cougar career Heaps has an opportunity to be in the company of some of the statistical best. The following shows where Heaps currently sits on some of the BYU career passing statistics:

Offensive nOtes

don’T haSSle The hoffWide receiver Cody Hoffman got involved with the passing game after catching just three passes for 20 yards in the first two games. Against Utah, Hoffman grabbed 8 balls for 138 yards to lead the team. He set a career mark for receptions and yards in a quarter, catching five balls for 98 yards in the first 15 min-utes of play. Hoffman’s catch total and yards for the game were also a career-high mark to add to a new career-high in kick returns as well with 8 returns and 139 yards, giving Hoffman 277 all-purpose yards, the sixth-best mark in BYU history. Hoffman is still looking for his first touchdown of 2011 after getting seven in 2010. With 1,228 all-purpose yards in his career, Hoff-man passes Neil Balholm for 80th all-time at BYU. Just a sophomore, Hoffman will continue to move up the list.

The wild cougarBackup quarterback Riley Nelson has made an ap-pearance in every game this year, notably coming in a change of pace quarterback to add in a running element. Against Utah, Nelson was 3 of 6 passing for 38 yards and rushd three times. Nelson had one rush for four yards to pick up a first down for a third-down conversion at Texas. At Ole Miss He had a pitch on an option play and later picked up six yards on a rush of his own. Nelson not only helps out on offense but also appears on special teams.

TighT endS STrongWith the tight end position seeing a bit of a drop off last year, a revamped tight end crew is focused on bringing the tight end back to a driving force in BYU’s offense. Against Utah, the tight ends combined for six catches and 76 yards. At Texas, the they caught seven passes for 88 yards. The tight ends are still waiting to pick up a touchdown pass but seem to be inching closer with nine catches for 208 yards on the year.

di luigi doeS iT allSenior running back JJ Di Luigi was named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List before the season began. The versatile back had 31 yards rushing against Utah and caught two passes for nine yards. He carried the ball 14 times for 44 yards against Texas while catching three passes for 24 yards, totaling 63 all-purpose yards against the Longhorns. Di Luigi moved into 27th all-time at BYU in all-purpose yards and is 17th in career rushing yards. Here is how Di Luigi looks on the all-time lists and who he might pass in the coming weeks:

BYU Career All-Purpose Yards24. Whittingham, Fred (1987-89) 2,51925. Hudson, Gordon (1981-83) 2,50326. Tuipulotu, Peter (1987-91) 2,49327. Di Luigi, JJ (2008-) 2,443

BYU Career Rushing Yards15. Heimuli, Hema (1992-95) 1,426 yards16.Tahi, Fahu (1999-05) 1,358 yards17. Di Luigi, JJ (2008-) 1,334 yards

keeping iT TogeTherStaying healthy is always a big concern for offensive linemen. The same five starters of Matt Reynolds, Houston Reynolds, Terence Brown, Braden Hansen and Braden Brown have started the first three games on the offensive line for BYU. In 2010, the starting lineup for the o-line also remained the same all year, with four of the starters coming back for 2011. If all five current starters can stay healthy its a good sign for the BYU offensive attack.

hoffman keepS iT goingAs a top target and leading receiver in 2010, sopho-more Cody Hoffman continues to make an impact, catching at least one pass in nine-straight games. Hoffman caught his first pass for 15 yards in the first quarter against Utah. Hoffman finished with a team-high eight catches and 138 yards. He extends his streak to nine games with at least one reception and 15 of 16 career games.

2011 Cougar Football

RetuRn fRom injuRyAfter missing part of the Ole Miss game and the entire Texas game due to a concussion, senior linebacker Brandon Ogletree returned to the field against Utah. Ogletree led the Cougars in total tackles, with seven, including two solo and five assisted. Ogletree also helped the Cougars record a turnover in the first quarter after he recovered a fumble that was forced by fellow linebacker Uona Kaveinga.

Van noy RecoRdWith a fumble recovery for a touchdown against Ole Miss, sophomore linebacker Kyle Van Noy became the first BYU player in history to return two fumbles for touchdowns. Van Noy is also the last Cougar defender to score two touchdowns since Derwin Gray returned two interceptions in 1990-91. The BYU touchdown record for a defender is three by both Mike Rus-sell (1973-74) and Todd Shell (1980-81). Van Noy becomes the ninth Cougar overall to score at least two touchdowns.

fiRst-yeaR staRteRsIn their first season as regular starters, sophomores Daniel Sorenson and Kyle Van Noy have been some of the biggest impact players on the Cougar defense. Against Texas, Van Noy totaled a career-best seven tackles and had one quarterback-hit. Against rival Utah, Van Noy snagged his first interception of the season. Sorenson finished second on the team with nine tack-les and had his first INT of the season against Texas while tallying four tackles against Utah. In week one against Ole Miss, both Van Noy and Sorenson played pivotal roles. Van Noy was named FBS Independent Defensive Player of the Week for his fumble recovery and game-winning touchdown, while Sorenson recov-ered a fumble and had six tackles.

GettinG off tHe fieLdThe Cougar defense dominated on third down against Utah. For the game, BYU held Utah to 3 for 13 on third down conversions, a 23% rate and the best rate for the Cougar defense in 2011. BYU also held Utah on its only fourth down conversion attempt.

tHey scoRed How mucH?Utah scored 54 points against BYU, the highest total against a BYU team since September 19, 2009 when the Cougars lost 54-28 against Florida State. The 2009 Florida State game was also the third game of the regular season.

fumBLe RecoVeRiesAfter forcing and recovering two fumbles against Ole Miss, the Cougars are 2-0 in the last two seasons when recovering multiple fumbles. The Cougars forced and recovered two fumbles just once last season, in a 44-7 win versus Colorado State.

fiRst HaLf successFor the second-consecutive game the BYU defense held the opponent’s offense to seven points or less in the first half. BYU did not allow a Utah touchdown untill the waning moments of the first half when just 32 seconds remained on the clock.

BYU also forced two turnovers in the first half for the second-consecutive game. Against Texas, the BYU de-fense forced quarterback Garrett Gilbert into two early interceptions. In the game against Utah, the Cougar defense forced Jordan Wynn into one interception and forced one fumble.

Defensive notes

defensiVe stand The BYU defense gave up its first touchdown of the season with 10:46 remaining in the third quar-ter against Texas, breaking a streak of just over 104-straight minutes without a touchdown dating back to last season.

fiRst QuaRteR sHutouts

The BYU defense has shutout its first three op-ponents this season in the first quarter, giving the Cougars eight first quarter shutouts in their last nine games dating back to last season. UTEP scored three points in the first 15 minutes in the 2010 New Mexico Bowl.

1st QuaRteR Run stopBYU has held its last 10 opponents to 30 yards rushing or less in the first quarter. Utah totaled just five yards rushing in the first quarter against the BYU defense.

couGH it up Junior Uona Kaveinga’s forced fumble in the first quarter extended BYU’s streak of forcing a turn-over to eight-straight games. The forced fumble was Kaveinga’s second career forced fumble. Kaveinga also forced a fumble in the season opening game against Ole Miss.

canada can waitAfter finishing his junior campaign with 37 tackles, in-cluding 6.5 for loss, senior Jadon Wagner was drafted by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats with the 44th overall pick of the 2011 Canadian Football League Draft.

A native of Cranbrook, British Columbia, Wagner chose to bypass the opportunity to play in the CFL in order to return to the Cougars for his senior season.

In his first game back as a Cougar, the senior captain recorded four total tackles.

Previous to enrolling at BYU, Wagner spent time with the Calgary Colts and Okargan Sun in the Canadian Junior Football League. As a rookie in the CJFL, Wag-ner led the nation in tackles with an average of 10 per game. He was also one of three players nominated for the CJFL Rookie of the Year award and helped lead his team to the conference final in his second year.

pReVentinG tHe passBYU held two of its first three opponents under 150 yards passing after limiting Texas to 123 yards and Ole Miss to 144 total passing yards. Utah quarterback Jordan Wynn totaled 239 passing yards, but the Cou-gars still rank 33rd in passes intercepted and passing efficiency defense, 24th in passing defense and 27th in first downs defense.

The success of the BYU defensive backfield has come despite a major lack of experience among the four starters. Corners Corby Eason and Preston Hadley had one combined start between them coming into the season, while KAT Daniel Sorenson had never started a game before 2011 and had not played since 2008.

Free safety Travis Uale brings the most experience to the group, with eight career starts heading into 2011.

tRojans Become couGaRsTwo new additions to the Bronco Mendenhall-led de-fense in 2011 are former USC standouts. Junior Uona Kaveinga and senior Hebron Fangupo made the trek from Los Angeles to Provo and saw significant playing time in the first game of the season.

Kaveinga was a top recruit in 2008 and chose to attend USC. He went on to appear in eight games in 2008 and recorded three total tackles. In 2009, Kaveinga was a reserve linebacker for the Trojans and again appeared in eight games.

Following the 2009 season, Kaveinga chose to trans-fer to BYU from USC. After sitting out the 2010 season due to NCAA transfer rules, Kaveinga has played a significant role in each of BYU’s first three games, totaling 14 tackles and recording two forced fumbles.

Fangupo, a defensive lineman, attended USC in 2009 and 2010. Against Texas, Fangupo consistently penetrated the offensive backfield and finished with three total tackles, including two TFL. Against Utah, Fangupo recorded two tackles and .5 TFL.

BYU senior linebaker Jameson Frazier has been named to the 2011 Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List.

Named after Pro Football Hall of Fame member Ronnie Lott, The Lott Trophy is awarded to college football’s Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year for excellent performance both on and off the field.

A 6-foot-2, 225-pound outside linebacker, Frazier started his career as a walk-on before earning a starting role in 2010 while helping the BYU defense finish the year ranked No. 24 in the nation. Frazier contributed 34 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, on sack, three quarterback hurries and two interceptions last season despite missing three games due to injury. He was recently selected by his teammates to serve as a team captain for the 2011 season.

Two years ago, no one foresaw junior Ezekiel Ansah lining up for the BYU football team. A freshman at the time, Ansah was recruited to BYU as a sprinter for the track and field team.

A native of Accra, Ghana, Ansah related well to BYU sprint coach Leonard Myles-Mills, also a Ghana native. After arriving in Provo, however, Ansah was recruited all over again, this time from the track to the football field.

Despite never playing a down of football in his life, Ansah saw action in six games on special teams and defensive line in 2010. A naturally gifted athlete, Ansah recorded three total tackles and a pass breakup in the first ever football game action.

Heading into the 2011 season, Ansah has a chance to see significant playing time in his second-ever football season. Ansah also made the switch from defensive line to linebacker in the offseason, but his learning curve is not nearly as steep as it was one year ago.

2011 Cougar Football

IT’S BEEN A WHILEBYU has been unable to return a kickoff for a touchdown for 158 consecutive games. Mike Rigell was the last Cougar to accomplish the feat, turning in a 96-yard touchdown in a 31-9 victory at Hawaii on October 17, 1998. The last time BYU returned a punt for a touch-down was back on Nov. 9, 2006 when current senior McKay Jacobson ran one back 77 yards against Wyoming at Edwards Stadium as a fresh-man. Fifty-eight games have passed since then.

DISTANT CouSINDeep snapper Reed Hornung came to BYU with a familiar family name. Paul Hornung, a former Notre Dame great, won the Heisman Trophy in 1956 and was known as one of the best all-around players in history, playing quarterback while also running, passing, blocking and tackling. Reed and Paul are related -- Paul is Reed’s father’s second cousin.

SpECIAL fLAgIn addition to the traditional team flag and alumni flag leading the team out of the tunnel before kick-off, BYU has also incorporated a special teams flag with an old school BYU logo this season. Against Utah, sophomore Carter Mees carried out the special teams flag.

Special TeamS NoTeS

KICKoff TEAMSThe BYU kickoff and kickoff return teams performed their jobs admirably against Ole Miss, as the Cougars averaged 26.0 yards per kickoff return and held the Rebels to 13.5 yards per return.

pLAyEr of THE WEEKFor his efforts against No. 21 Texas last week, sopho- more kicker Justin Sorensen was named the FBS Independent Special Teams Player of the Week and an honorable mention Placekicker Performer of the Week from the College Football Performance Awards. Sorensen went 3 for 3 on field goals and converted his only PAT attempt, scoring a career-high 10 points against the Longhorns.

ALL-purpoSESophomore wide receiver Cody Hoffman returned kicks regularly for the first time in 2011 against Utah, totaling 139 return yards to go along with his 138 receiving yards. His 277 total yards were the most for a BYU player against Utah.

30, 31, 32, 33 ... 46 With field goals of 30, 33, and 32 yards against Texas, respectively, sophomore kicker Justin Sorensen added to the only field goal of his career, a 31-yarder against Wyoming in 2008. In the third game of the 2011 sea-son against Utah, Sorenson added his fifth career field goal, this one from a career best 46 yards.

BIg TIME puNTSAfter recording eight punts of 50+ yards in 2009 and 17 such boots in 2010, punter Riley Stephenson con-tinued his trend by slamming one kick beyond 50 yards against Ole Miss and recorded a season long 65 yard punt against Utah.

pINNINg THEM BACKJunior punter Riley Stephenson twice pinned the Ole Miss Rebels inside the 20-yard line, giving him 30 career punts downed inside the 20. Stephenson also placed one kick just inside the 10-yard line against the Rebels.

Against Texas, Stephenson helped BYU win the field position battle with a punt that was downed on the Texas three-yard line. In the third game against Utah, Stephenson twice pinned Utah inside the 20 and aver-aged 46.5 yards per punt.

BIg LEg IS BACKAfter serving a two-year LDS mission, sophomore kicker Justin Sorenson has averaged just over 68 yards per kickoff and has recorded one touchback in each of the Cougars’ first three games.

3 fg BAD LuCK?Sophomore kicked Justin Sorenson nailed all three of his field goal attempts against Texas, the second time a BYU kicker has gone 3 for 3 on field goals since 2010. In both three field goal games, the Cougars lost 17-16, the first to Utah in 2010 and the second to Texas in 2011.

2011 Cougar Football

bronco menDenhall7th season

During his six seasons as the head coach at Brigham Young University, Bronco Mendenhall has returned the Cougars to the ranks of the nation’s top teams. Taking over a BYU program in 2005 that was coming off three con- secutive losing seasons, Mendenhall has guided his teams to six straight bowl invitations, two outright Mountain West Conference championships and regular national top-25 rankings.

Under his leadership, BYU has earned a 56-21 (.727) record as he begins his sev-enth season to rank No. 16 in total wins among all teams in the nation during that span. The Cougars have received six straight bowl invitations for the first time since a string of 17 consecutive bowls invitations from 1978 through 1994. Mendenhall is the only coach in BYU football history to take his first six teams to a bowl game.

Mendenhall has led BYU to bowl wins in four of the last five seasons to become the first Cougar teams to win four bowls in a five-year span since LaVell Edwards teams did so from 1980-84. Nationally, BYU is one of only 11 programs to win four bowl games in the last five seasons.

In the last five years the Cougars have achieved a 50-15 record -- only eight teams have more wins over that span. In fact, BYU is one of only seven FBS programs to win 10 or more games during at least four of the last five seasons, and BYU and Boise State are the only programs in the West to achieve that consistent level of success. From 2006-2009 Mendenhall guided the Cougars to four straight seasons with 10 or more wins for the first time in school history.

BYU’s success under Mendenhall is also evi-dent in

the national

rankings and NCAA

statistics. BYU has finished ranked

in the top 25 in the various national statisti-

cal categories 65 times in the past six seasons

(42 offense, 16 defense, 6 special teams, 1 misc.). The Cougars have achieved 39 top-15 statistical rankings, 29 top-10 rank- ings and 15 top-5 rankings in that span. The Cougars have also been ranked in the top-25 polls during each of the past five seasons and finished ranked No. 12 following the 2009 season -- the program’s highest final ranking since finishing No. 5 in 1996.

Another hallmark of Mendenhall’s program has been the emphasis on balance and priorities in the many other facets of life outside of football. Reflecting that emphasis, BYU consistently received the most academic all-conference honorees each season and has totaled 185 selections during Mendenhall’s tenure, along with 64 MWC Scholar-Athlete awards. BYU also ranks second nationally for Academic All-America recipients over the past three seasons. Six Cougar student-athletes have been named ESPN Academic All-Americans the past three years. Among all FBS schools only Penn State has had more during that period.

Going independent in 2011, BYU was consistently a top MWC contender under Mendenhall. BYU achieved a 39-9 (.813) conference record over the past six years to help the Cougars complete their 12-year tenure in the MWC with 64 conference wins -- the most of any MWC school. Mendenhall also helped the Cougars bring bowl wins over Oregon, UCLA, Oregon State and UTEP as the program enters a new era as one of four independent schools, joining Notre Dame, Army and Navy.

Last year’s BYU team achieved a 7-6 record and tied for third in the MWC at 5-3 while playing 19 freshmen and facing a schedule that featured

eight bowl teams and four opponents that finished in final BCS Top 25 standings. Mendenhall took over defensive coordina-

tor responsibilities after the teams 1-4 start and the team responded to become one of the top defensive teams

over the final eight games.

As a player, Mendenhall was a two-year starter at corner-back for Snow College from 1984-85, winning the NJCAA

National Championship and earning first-team all-conference, all-region, second-team NJCAA All-America and JC Gridwire

Academic All-America honors.

Mendenhall transferred to Oregon State and was a two-year starter, playing free safety, strong safety and linebacker for the Beavers. Mendenhall was a team captain as a senior and received the Leo Gribkoff Memorial Award, given to the team’s most inspirational player.

Mendenhall was raised in Alpine, Utah, and graduated from American Fork High School in 1984. He received a bachelor’s degree in education from Oregon State in 1988 and a master’s degree in education with an emphasis in exercise physiology also from OSU in 1990.

Mendenhall, who resides in Alpine, Utah, is married to Holly Johnston of Missoula, Montana. The couple has three sons.

proFessional eXperienceThe BYU coaching staff has six members who have played professional football. Associate Head Coach Lance Reynolds was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1978 and also played at Philadelphia. Offensive coordinator Brandon Doman was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 2002 and played three years for the 49er’s, while defensive line coach Steve Kaufusi and outside linebacker coach Kelly Poppinga played in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals. Graduate assistant Shaun Nua also spent some time with the Pittsburgh Steelers. In addition, receivers coach Ben Cahoon spent 13 years with the Candian Football League’s Montreal Alouettes before retir-ing as the CFL’s all-time receptions leader.

In addition, Poppinga and Nua are both Super Bowl champions; Poppinga won a ring with the Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII while Nua earned his in the Steelers’ Super Bowl XL victory. Cahoon also won the ultimate prize in the CFL by leading the Montreal to three Grey Cup championships in 2002, 2009 and 2010.

the new GUysThe BYU coaching staff welcomed two new members this past offseason in running backs coach Joe DuPaix and receivers coach Ben Cahoon.

DuPaix most recently coached at Navy for the past three seasons, helping led the Midshipmen to three bowl bids. In each of his three seasons, Navy was one of the top-6 rushing programs in the country, including an NCAA-best 293.4 ypg in 2008. A Salt Lake City native, DuPaix played under his father, Roger, a successful high school coach at Skyline who also coached current BYU offensive coordinator Brandon Doman in high school. DuPaix played quarterback at Snow College (Ephraim, UT) and Southern Utah where he set the FCS record for most rushing yards by a quarterback in a season.

Cahoon retired in after the 2010 season as the all-time receptions leader in CFL history. Cahoon also set records for most receiving yards in a career in Grey Cup games and most touchdowns by an Alouette in addition to earning the CFL Most Outstanding Candian Award in 2002 and 2003. A native of Orem, Utah, Cahoon was an All-WAC performer in addition to being an Academic All-American. He is also the son-in-law of current Utah Governor Gary Herbert.

Among all wide receivers who have ever played, Cahoon ranks near the top with his 1,017 career receptions:
