newspaperfullysupportsthepetitionprocess(peopleneedtobeabletovoteonsuchthings),itisimportanttopointoutthemisleadingaspectofthiseffort. Thestatedgoalofthisgroup(stoptuitionhikes.com)istoreducetuitionratesatIdaho’suniversitiesandcollegesby22%.Whilethisseemslikeanoblegoal,thisstatementisnottrue. Ifpassed,thisinitiativewouldnotreducetuitionrates.Accordingtothegroup’sownstatement,theproposalwouldprovideanacross-the-boardscholarshipforallin-state,undergraduatestudents.Meaning,taxpayerswouldbesubsidizingIdahocollegestudentswhileuniversitiescontinuetorakeinthesameamountofmoneyforwhat

manyconsider,anoverpricededucation. Scholarshipsareagreatthingforpotentialcollegestu-dents.Theyprovideopportunitiesforstudentstogainaccesstoeducation,eitherbyhelpingthemovercomeeco-nomichurdlesorbyrewardingthemforexceptionalworkinaparticularsubjectoractivity.Anacross-the-boardscholarship,however,wouldprovidenoincentiveforstu-dentstoexcel,norwoulditgiveuniversitiesandcollegesanyreasontocontrolcosts. Intruth,thispetitionisreallyaboutmovingtowardsatuition-freecollegesystem,anideabeingpromotedbyPresidentialcandidatesBernieSandersandHillaryClinton.And,aswithanypetition,thereareprosandconstothisidea. Manyofusmaysupporttheideaoftuition-freeeducationanditisperfectlyreasonabletoaskvoterstoconsiderthatidea.Itisnotresonable,orhonest,todeceivevotersintovot-ingfortuitionreductionwhenitisinfactataxincrease.
