Generosity Abounds in FairfieldDonations Large and Small to the Camas County Senior

and Community Center are Greatly Appreciated About a month ago, the Camas County Senior and Commu-nity Center was very concerned about finances - until a numberof extremely kind folks intervened with great generosity! TheCenter has received three large checks, one from a Goodingfarmer, one from a Foundation, and one from a Trust, all ofwhich requested no media attention. Several local people haveunselfishly opened their personal wallets - in fact the outpouringhas been wonderful and very much appreciated!

Also, the Seniors themselves have stepped up to the plate, volunteering many hours of time making candies, cookies, andother items for a huge Christmas bazaar, doing janitorial work, cleaning and decorating the Center, taking over the daily tasks, and donating items for the December lunches and the monthlybreakfast - and our cook has worked overtime preparing greatfood. The public has responded by attending the meals, buyingthe bazaar items, and entertaining with songs and presentations. The local media has kindly given us great coverage to help getthe word out for our events.

As we enter the new year, the Center is in much healthierfinancial shape - thanks to so many donations, large and small. Those of us who enjoy the Center would like to give everyone agreat big THANK YOU and ask that you continue to supportus in 2013.

United Way Girl Scout Patch Program LaunchedSetting and achieving goals is a tenet of the Girl Scout Lead-

ership Experience, and earning a patch for their sash is an out-ward sign of the progress each girl has made. The United Wayrecently established guidelines for earning a special patch, and themembers of Gooding Girl Scout Troop 11 are striving to qualifyfor the award.

Bill Knopp, executive director of the United Way of SouthCentral Idaho visited with the troop and assisted the girls with thefirst steps towards earning their patch. The girls were enthusias-tic about learning what the United Way does, and whom it servesin Idaho, especially in the Gooding area. They learned about thefour areas of emphasis the United Way addresses: EmergencyServices, Crisis Intervention, Youth and Senior services, and howtheir agency partners address those needs.

The troop had recently completed a project of gleaning a localfield for potatoes, and donated the 800 pounds they harvested tothe Helping Hearts and Hands food bank, which serves their com-munity. Troop leader Renea Kelley said, “The girls worked hardand got tired, but were excited to see that their efforts helped tofeed the hungry in our community”.

The troop members have completed the major portion of theirrequirements through service to their community, and learningabout the United Way, and plan to receive the patches at their nextCourt of Awards in June, 2013. For more information about theUnited Way patch program, troops may click here.

For more information on how you can support your commu-nity through the United Way, please contact them at 208-733-4922.

The ten-drawerdresser is on display at the library; tick-ets are being sold for $10 each or threefor $25 and are available at the libraryand at the City Hall office. Gary has amonetary goal in mind, and tickets willbe sold until that goal is reached; it’sestimated that the drawing will be heldsometime in February.

An energeticgroup of people metat the Gooding Pub-lic Library on Thurs-day, December 27th,to learn how to havefun with math andscience. Participantsranged in age from three years old to adults.

At stations inside the library, attendees learned about colorblending, architecture, made shaving foam “storm clouds” “rain”and played with a fun substance called “gak” .

Outside we enjoyed watching our visiting “mad scientist”,Mrs. Meagan Swenson, as she safely demonstrated how add-ing water to some special rocks created a flammable gas andhow to make “elephant toothpaste”.

Take-home packets were sent with each of the children, sothey could continue the fun at home.

Tee Hurd

For this “Cup of Tee”, I’m sitting heredeciding what tools I need to get a news-

letter off to everyone The postal system is hav-ing their problems once again. Are stamps an option? I

don’t know but three cents used to send correspondence aroundthe world. A tablet of writing paper might be important. Wheredoes the paper come from? Idaho no longer has the saw mills itused to. A pen would also be handy to write on the paper. Withall the turkeys quick grown for Thanksgiving or Christmas, theremay not be a quill long enough to hold ink to write a story.

My computer skills have not gotten any better in the lastfew weeks. I was too busy doing everything else to beat theDecember 21st deadline for the end of the world. In fact, Isomehow missed the Mayan email stating I was no longer goingto be able to write a weekly letter. I only found this out becauseDoomsday Preppers were running up and down the street withno hope of tomorrow.

I was asked by many, “Tee, are you ready for the end of theworld on December 21st?” My answer was, “I will go to sleepthe night before and I will awake like normal. I will awake withthe same hope of life.” Hope is the emotional state which pro-motes the belief of a positive outcome related to events andcircumstances in one’s life. Part of that belief is living. We allneed to prepare for the future but the precious present of now isjust that – precious. What has happened in the past cannot bechanged. Only lessons can be learned (sometimes only by rep-etition thus history repeating itself.)

The Mayans probably had no future planning of events pastDecember 21st. They probably could not envision technologypast that point. Maybe they could not calculate man’s selfish-ness for his own demise. At any rate I could not tell you whatthe original concept was for this day. I know not many of themwere enjoying a “Cup of Tee” for the road. Nor was I there tocarve a “column” in stone for all to read a thousand plus yearslater. Apparently the world has ended on December 21st formany. They have given up hope on themselves and their fellowman. There is probably no doubt that we are at the end of asection of knowledge or technology. We will probably go intoanother time of knowledge.

For instance, look at the time line for the telephone. It wasinvented in 1876, and it was a land line. Then Marconi helpedwith wireless transmissions. Party lines were common until thelate 1970’s, then we had caller ID and the beginning of cellularphones. Look at the technology of cell phones in the last 15years alone. You can watch movies, get direction to a destina-tion, play your favorite music, get information on a particularsubject and so many unlimited uses. The point taken we areclosing another time of technology. We don’t know what is tohappen. I have hope and I hope everyone else will do the samefor our new generation in the making.

This is my “Cup of Mayan Tee” for time yet spent, so scheduleyour “Cup of Tee” for your future calendars.
