When Toby Keith takes the spotlight on June 18 at the Song-writers Hall of Fame induction ceremony in midtown New York, he cou ld d raw f rom more t ha n 4 0 bona f ide h its for a performance.

Country UPDATE

Keith wrote and released a bevy of songs about alcohol — “Beer for My Horses,” “Whiskey Girl,” “I Love This Bar,” “Stays in Mexico” — after country had experienced a long, self-imposed dry spell surrounding the topic.

His songs have also been populated with the occasional word or image that is so unusual or unsettling it becomes a defining piece. The most famous of those moments — when he inserted the line “We’ll put a boot in your ass” in the 9/11-reaction song “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)” — created a polarizing single that still went to No. 1. In other, less controversial instances, the uncommon-to-songwriters word “roughneck” is key to the chorus in “When Country Comes to Town,” “electricity” is bolted into “You Shouldn’t Kiss Me Like This,” and Keith boldly rhymes “Pasadena” with “basketball arena” in “Honkytonk U.”

“It’s not intentional,” insists Keith. “I think it’s from growing up and listening to Roger Miller records. He rhymed ‘purple’ with ‘maple syruple,’ you know.”

Some of Keith’s most provocative departures from the norm — the “boot in your ass” reference and the lynch-mob hanging in “Beer for My Horses” — have made him a cartoonish figure to his detractors. But to assess Keith solely on such songs is a disservice. His 2012 single “Hope on the Rocks” is a tightly knit character study of the regulars in a neighborhood bar. His 2003 ballad “American Soldier” adroitly visits the emotions and the challenges behind the uniform of a typical working-class enlistee. “Who’s That Man” effectively captures a divorced father who’s tortured by being replaced in his own nuclear family.

As much swagger as he has put out for the public, there’s still a sensitive guy underneath it all. There has to be if he’s going to empathize with the vulner-abilities of those characters during the writing process.

“I don’t think I completely become that person, but I look through that person’s eyes,” he says. “You have to do that. If you’re trying to express a feel-ing, it’s hard to say how somebody else feels. You have to kind of think how you’d feel if you were in that situation.”

Keith’s image as a rabble-rouser, the guy who helps set the tone for a party, wasn’t always part of his public persona. He built the early part of his career in somewhat typical fashion for the ’90s, mixing story songs, uptempo num-bers and ballads. But “How Do You Like Me Now?!” changed everything. He walked away from his first recording deal and bought the masters, and that kiss-off song was the first single when he arrived at DreamWorks. It launched him to a new level on the concert circuit, which soon changed the inspiration behind much of his music.

“You’d have a big tailgate party all day, and then the opening acts start about 6:30, and then you hit the stage and everybody’s already up and running, feeling good, and then you go out there and you just got all that electricity,” he says. “Doing that for the last 15 years puts me where I’m writing in that environment a lot, and you’re inspired by that environment, so [the music] took a switch to the party songs and the more uptempo kind of thing. There’s just not many ballads that come out of that.”

Ultimately, the music connected. At his commercial peak, presumably in

the mid-2000s, Keith was at a BMI event where Graham Nash told him the accepted rumor around the party was that Keith’s songs had single-handedly accounted for 1 percent of BMI’s revenue that year. Executives declined to pinpoint that percentage for Keith, but he figures once songwriters outside of coun-try began to understand how much he was generating, it increased the likelihood that he would one day ar-rive in the Songwriters Hall.

That day is just a couple weeks away. But it wouldn’t be a big sur-prise if — after he pays homage to his grandmother Clancy — Keith also takes a few seconds during his acceptance speech to question some prominent omissions. Miller, Merle Haggard and Mel Tillis are all missing from the hall.

“It really makes you scratch your head how they get left out,” says Keith.

That doesn’t mean he won’t be happy to accept his own induction. Song-writing is, after all, the centerpiece of his career.

“I’ve got a warehouse full of awards and plaques and stuff like that,” says Keith. “But this one’s the king daddy.”

CMA FEST INVITES DISCOVERYThe bulk of the 80,000 people expected to attend the CMA Music Festival in Nashville next week are drawn in by the allure of artists they’re familiar with,

such as Carrie Underwood, The Band Perry or Gary Allan. But more than half of those visitors will leave the festival as a newly con-

verted devotee to someone they had never heard of before they arrived, ac-cording to just-released research from the Country Music Association.

Some 56 percent of attendees became a quick fan of an artist they were pre-viously unaware of during last year’s festival, based on data compiled from 2,1000 attendees. That climbs to 62 percent among fans who were attend-ing for the first time.

That should be heartening news to the artists who play the smaller, less-publicized stages during the event. Most media attention focuses on the con-certs at LP Field, which draw more than 50,000 people and are the primary source of performances for a summer ABC special.

But those smaller stages — most of which are open for free to the locals —can be important building blocks for acts as festival-goers discover new acts and take their appreciation back to their hometowns.

Some 500 acts will play from June 11-14. Among those artists who might benefit from the exposure are songwriter Joey Hyde, Aaron Watson, Ryan Kinder and Mockingbird Sun.

Rookie country/Southern rock quartet A Thousand Horses becomes the first group (of at least three members) to send a debut entry to No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart this decade, as “Smoke” (Republic Nashville) surges 2-1. The song crowns the tally (dated June 13) in its 21st week with a 6 per-cent gain to 46.8 million audience impressions, according to Nielsen Music.

The band is the first group to crown Country Airplay on its first try since Zac Brown Band arrived with the two-week No. 1 “Chicken Fried,” which took over atop the Dec. 6, 2008 chart. Prior to A Thousand Horses, Maddie & Tae was the last act (either duo, group or solo) to send its introductory single to No. 1 when its “Girl in a Country Song” led the Dec. 20, 2014 list.

A Thousand Horses, which is currently opening Darius Rucker’s Southern Style Tour (with Brett Eldredge and Brothers Osborne), will release their debut album, Southernality, on June 9. The quartet — lead vocalist Michael Hobby, guitarists Bill Satcher and Zach Brown, and bassist Graham DeLoach — recently told Billboard that its sound is a product of its members’ musical upbringing. “Growing up in the Southern rock realm with Lynyrd Skynyrd [and] the Marshall Tucker Band, as well as Tom Petty and The Black Crowes, I think that’s where a lot of our influences come from and that’s what people hear [in our music],” says Hobby. “To me, that’s one of the big-gest compliments you can give, because I’m a big fan of those artists, for sure.”

The second single from Southernality will be “(This Ain’t No) Drunk Dial,” which goes to radio on June 29.

Meanwhile, it’s the first time in a year-and-a-half that soloists are blocked from the Country Airplay chart’s top two. As A Thousand Horses celebrate

GOOD WORKSHow do you purchase a Hunter Hayes concert ticket this year? One alterna-tive is with blood money.

In honor of his current single — “21,” released via Play MPE on May 21 — Hayes hopes to inspire at least 21,000 fans to donate life-giving fluids in the Hunter Hayes Sleeves Up virtual blood drive. The campaign encourages followers to donate blood or platelets to the American Red Cross during the summer months, when donations are at their lowest.

Using his campaign page, fans can document their participation and po-tentially win tickets to see Hayes on Lady Antebellum’s Wheels Up Tour, which also features Sam Hunt.

Hayes was the first to roll his sleeves up and succumb to the needle.

TWEET OF THE WEEKStudio g uitarist Derek Wells (@DweeZee) might be fashionably he-roic the next time he does a session for Chris Young or Thomas Rhett:

“Strongly considering wearing a cape full time... But, a casual one ya know?.. I’m not gonna be all uppity about it.”

in the winners’ circle, Republic Nashville labelmate Florida Georgia Line lifts 3-2 with “Sippin’ On Fire” (43.6 million, up 5 percent). Soloists had last looked in from outside the top two on the chart dated Feb. 1, 2014, when Zac Brown Band’s “Sweet Annie” and The Band Perry’s “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely” ranked at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. The acts’ domination wrapped a run of six consecutive weeks of duos or groups controlling the top two; Eli Young Band, Parmalee and FGL also contributed to the stretch.

Bookending the Country Airplay top 10, Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush” (Capitol Nashville) climbs 12-10 (26.8 million, up 10 percent). With its new milestone, the group’s seventh top 10 reinforces radio’s support for the song

— which drew airplay on all 150 Country Airplay reporters in the tracking week — after many media outlets had, due to misjudging the song’s lyrics, widely overstated programmers’ avoidance of it.

“Crush” has led the airplay/sales/streaming-based Hot Country Songs chart for five weeks; on the June 6 tally, sales accounted for 58 percent of its activity, followed by airplay and streaming (21 percent each).

Meanwhile, Jake Owen’s “Real Life” (RCA Nashville) jumps onto Country Airplay at No. 29 (9.1 million in first-week audience), marking his highest launch of 18 career entries. The ’90s-alt-rock-leaning track (Sublime reportedly influenced

the sound Owen was seeking for it) bows benefited by hourly plays May 26 on participating iHeartMedia stations.

MUSIC NOTESKip Moore’s sophomore album, Wild Ones, is cued up for an Aug. 21 release. All 13 tracks were co-written by Moore, whose current single, “I’m to Blame,”

is No. 27 on the Country Airplay chart dated June 13. Moore is meanwhile on deck for the June 9 Music City Gives Back concert in downtown Nashville, alongside Rodney Atkins, Tyler Farr, Lee Brice and Maddie & Tae.

Anyone who’s uncertain about Brett Eldredge’s roots should have their questions answered with his sophomore album. It’s titled Illinois, and it’s scheduled to hit the market on Sept. 11. El-dredge was expected to announce the project on Late Night With Seth Meyers on June 1. The lead single, “Lose My Mind,” is at No. 26 in its sixth week on Country Airplay.

Asleep at the Wheel frontman Ray Benson will be inducted into

the Philadelphia Music Walk of Fame on Oct. 26. The western-swing vocalist is part of a wide-ranging class that also includes hard-rock band Cinderella, Broadway singer Andrea McArdle, jazz singer Billie Holiday and hip-hop band The Roots.

“It’s basically like breathing to me.” That’s Chris Stapleton’s explanation for his relentless pursuit of music on “15 Years of Traveller,” a six-minute promotional video that premiered June 1 on YouTube. His album Traveller debuted at No. 2 on Hot Country Albums, and the “15 Years” video provides an intimate glimpse into the thought process and passionate dedication at the heart of one of Nashville’s most unique voices.

Country Indicator

CHART LEGENDRANKINGSCountry Airplay is ranked by total audience impressions for the week ending Sunday based on monitored airplay of 150 stations by Nielsen BDS. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Arbitron Inc. copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2015, Arbitron Inc.). Country Indicator is tabulated using reported playlists and Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay at 104 stations, ranked by total plays.

BULLETSlAwarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored

station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week.

TIESOn Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first.

RECURRENTSOn Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20

weeks, provided that they are not still gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks.

HOT SHOT DEBUTAwarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay and Country Indicator, respectively.

MOST ADDEDThe total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS) for stations that do not report adds.

MOST INCREASED AUDIENCE/PLAYSMost Increased Audience on Country Airplay and Most Increased Plays on Country Indicator list the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience or plays, respectively.

AIRPOWERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience.

BREAKERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time.
