When Mandy Barnett finished her set on July 20 at Nashville’s 3rd & Lindsley, she enjoyed a post-show luxury that most country artists rarely experience: She slept in her own bed. It was the second of four Thursday-night appearances for Barnett in a one-month residency, and that bit of normalcy — do your job, return to your own house — is one of the perks of that arrangement. “Going out on the road is tire- some,” says Barnett. “The trav- eling, and being in hotel rooms, and having to ride in the car, get on a plane — it just wears you out. I feel like doing that is fun, but there’s something great about being able to stay home.” An increasing number of Music City acts are following that path, playing residencies of varying lengths in their hometown. Charlie Worsham is in the middle of a five-week run, Every Damn Monday, at Basement East that concludes July 31; The Time Jumpers, regulars at 3rd & Lindsley, mark their 20th an- niversary of weekly Monday-night shows next year; and Little Big Town delivers the third batch of concerts in its intermittent 10-show residency at the Ryman Auditorium July 28-30. “Everything about it is wonderful,” says group member Kimberly Schlapman. “The crew loves that they get to set up all our stage gear on a fixed stage for three days. Also, the backstage area becomes so homey and comfortable because we’re set up there. It al- ready has such charm. The fact we get to make it our home for more than one night at a time feels super good.” But there are other reasons to do multiple engagements down the road from your house. Community is a big one. All the residencies have featured surprise guests: Charles Kelley and Wheeler Walker Jr. at Worsham’s shows, Reba McEntire and Joe Walsh at The Time Jumpers’, Coun- try Music Hall of Fame member Charlie McCoy and budding singer-songwriter Sam Hunter at Barnett’s and Luke Bryan and Chris Stapleton at LBT’s. Musicianship benefits, too, as Worsham discovered by booking multinight stays at Nashville clubs in 2015 and 2016. “Residencies,” he says, “are great for your chops.”

That was one of the biggest reasons that steel guitarist Paul Franklin, one of the city’s most in-demand session players, joined The Time Jumpers nearly 10 years ago. Since Shania Twain broke in the 1990s, producers have increas-ingly used steel for atmospheric sounds and shorter riffs. Franklin adapted to the change but wanted other ways to challenge himself and sharpen his cre-ative muscle.

“I love what’s going on in the studio — I don’t mean to paint a dark picture — but for me, playing a steel guitar, I wanted to always hone my chops in case some guy came into town and was like a Conway Twitty or [to play on] a Vince Gill record,” says Franklin. “I wanted to be sure that I maintained those skills, so I was always just practicing at home. Now I don’t have to practice. I’ve got this Monday-night gig where I can hone those skills.”

Residencies were typically relegated in the past to unsigned, develop-ing acts looking to catch a break. Craig Campbell , Ron-nie Milsap, Rascal Flatts and Lon-estar were among those who ser ved as the house band in hotels or bars in dow ntow n Nash-v i l le b efore t hey reached nat iona l stature. Residen-cies for national acts mostly took place in

Las Vegas, where lengthy contracts were given to the likes of Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones and Elvis Presley. But in recent years, core country artists began to take advantage of the Strip, too, with lengthy bookings for Twain, Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw & Faith Hill, and McEntire with Brooks & Dunn. As Nashville has moved up on the destination map, it makes increasing sense for artists with some sort of national presence to book multiple dates at a hometown venue where they might attract a mix of locals and visitors.

“We’ve become like New York and Chicago and Los Angeles,” says Franklin. “We have so much tourism here that’s thriving, and in Nashville’s case, our tourism’s still based around the music. We have a lot of [attractions] here, but a good portion of them are interested in seeing music while they’re here, so the residencies — and we’re certainly one of them — benefit from that.”

While vacationers make a difference, artists have a bit of a pact with the locals. Most of the residencies take place on weeknights, and they tend to start at 7 p.m. or 8 p.m., times better suited for working-class folks than late club hours.

“You can let the dog out or just go straight from work and have dinner and see a show and be home by 9:30,” says Barnett. “A lot of people like to go out during the week rather than on the weekends. It’s easier to get a table, have a place to park, that kind of thing. It won’t be as stressful as going out on a Saturday night.”

Mondays, in fact, may be the most ideal night to establish a residency. It’s the slowest night of the week for most venues, which means they take less of a risk by booking an act for multiple shows. Plus, touring artists and their bands are usually in town and unscheduled after a weekend of one-nighters.

“I’ve been talking with musician friends who want to do just a jam night on Mondays, because it’s musicians’ Saturday night,” says Worsham. “Whoever’s in town and can make it, does. It’s a rotating cast of characters. We play songs we love. It’s just good for community, it’s good for musicianship.” He also notes that it’s a good opportunity for casual networking.

And because an extended run practically requires artists to change up their sets, the residency provides an opportunity for singular performances. That’s particularly true at the Ryman, where the venue has made Little Big Town feel at home both physically and creatively: Schlapman says that sometimes the quartet will stand at the end of the stage without microphones and do a song a cappella.

“We can’t do that anywhere else than at the Ryman,” she says. “It’s such a reverent place, and people are so respectful that they will be totally silent while that happens, and also the acoustics in that place are so beautiful and magical that it works there, and that voices do carry. You can’t do that in most other places.”

And in most other places, they also can’t drive home and sleep at their own house.

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill met with KKGO Los Angeles station manager/PD Michael Levine during a two-night stand at the Staples Center. From left: Levine, McGraw, Hill and Moo Greek Yogurt owner/president Zorbey Ozdilek.

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE JULY 24, 2017 | PAGE 4 OF 20

Sam Hunt’s “Body Like a Back Road” (MCA Nashville) ties the record for the most weeks spent atop Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, as it earns its 24th week at No. 1 on the survey dated Aug. 5. “Back Road” equals the 24-week reign of Florida Georgia Line’s debut single, “Cruise,” in 2012 and 2013.

Hot Country Songs blends radio airplay, streaming and sales data. The chart launched as an all-encompassing genre survey in October 1958. (It had been purely airplay-based, powered by Nielsen Music, since 1990; in 2012, it transitioned to its current multimetric methodology.)

“Making history is fun, and this summertime smash keeps going and going,” Universal Music Group Nashville chairman/CEO Mike Dungan tells Billboard. “The audience response has been Beatle-esque at his sold-out live shows.”

For now, at least, “Back Road” — co-written by Hunt, Zach Crowell, Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne — is a stand-alone single following Hunt’s debut full-length, 2014’s Montevallo, which has sold 1.3 million copies in the United States to date, according to Nielsen Music. As for a potential follow-up LP, “Sam has been writing, and he’s going to do things on his time schedule,” UMGN president Cindy Mabe recently told Billboard, adding that “Back Road” is “just a cool, laid-back song that’s also really soulful.”

Along with its 24-week domination on Hot Country Songs, “Back Road” likewise leads Country Streaming Songs (16.7 million U.S. streams, down 3 percent) and Country Digital Song Sales (46,000 downloads sold, down less than 1 percent) for a 24th week each.

On Country Airplay, “Back Road” ruled for three weeks beginning on the chart dated May 6. It declines 4-6 in its 25th week, down 4 percent to 35 million audience impressions at the format. It spent a record-breaking 16 weeks in the top five.

RASCAL RULES Rascal Flatts rolls up its 14th Country Airplay No. 1, as “Yours If You Want It” (Big Machine) ascends 2-1 in its 29th week on the chart, increasing 6 percent to 41 million audience impressions.

With its latest Country Airplay leader, Rascal Flatts takes the lead for the most No. 1s by groups with three members or more, passing Zac Brown Band (13). Tim McGraw leads all acts, with 29 No. 1s (dating to the chart’s 1990 launch).

“Yours,” written by Andrew Dorff and Jonathan Singleton, is the lead single from Rascal Flatts’ Back to Us LP, which debuted at No. 2 on the June 10-dated Top Country Albums chart. The group first scaled the Country Airplay summit almost 15 years ago, when “These Days” reached No. 1 for its first of three weeks on top on the chart dated Nov. 30, 2002.

NEW TOP 10s Old Dominion notches its fourth top 10 on both Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay with “No Such Thing As a Broken Heart” (RCA Nashville). On Hot Country Songs, the track hops 11-10; on Country Airplay, it jumps 12-8, up 7 percent to 30.9 million in audience ... Also on Country Airplay, Justin Moore’s “Somebody Else Will” (Valory) becomes his ninth top 10 (11-10; 30.7 million, up 5 percent).

MEET MAREN & RANDY Listen to the next episode of the Billboard Chart Beat Podcast, posting July 27 on Billboard.com and on iTunes, for a conversation with Sony Music Nashville CEO/chairman Randy Goodman and the label’s Maren Morris as they share insights from each side of the label-artist relationship.

“We went hard after Maren and tried to present her a vision about who we were,” said Goodman about the process that led to her signing. Addressing Morris directly,

he said, “You believed in us and gave us your music and allowed us to dive into this with you.”

“It’s funny; that goes both ways,” responds Morris. “Yes, I trust you to see the vision and execute it the way we dreamt of. But you win the lottery if you are signed. I’d been turned down by a major label twice in the span of a few months. I had this vision, but you guys trusted me to be right about it. So that is sort of this cool responsibility we have: to hold each other accountable.”

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE JULY 24, 2017 | PAGE 9 OF 20

GILBERT DEBUTS APPLE MUSIC SPOTBrantley Gilbert made the most of an opportunity on July 23, debuting a new, 60-second black-and-white Apple Music commercial during a NASCAR race that bore his name this year, the Brantley Gilbert Big Machine Brickyard 400.

The spot will likely appeal to fans of both country and rock, two genres that trail pop and hip-hop in the penetration of streaming services. Shot over two days near Leiper’s Fork, Tenn., the video incorporates images of a wide-open field, motorcycles on a country road, rural neighbors in a small-town diner and an American flag, backed by snippets of Gilbert’s current single, “The Ones That Like Me,” plus Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama,” Kendrick Lamar’s “Backseat Freestyle” and Steppenwolf’s “Born to Be Wild.” Other acts whose names are visible in Gilbert’s playlist include Johnny Cash, Metallica and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Apple Music touts a three-month free trial in the spot, after Gilbert delivers a simple hook: “My country. My people. My music. Apple Music.”

Gilbert suggests in a press release that he is reticent to lend his brand to advertisements, but notes that Apple’s plan to capture his lifestyle won him over.

“To me, when you’re being real, that’s the best way to chase the music,” he said. “When you’re doing that, you’re hitting right up in the place where the songs come from.”

Gilbert performed a pre-race set for the Brickyard 400 in Indianapolis, and Carly Pearce delivered the national anthem.

MUSIC NOTESJerry Lee Lewis is on deck for an intriguing artistic mash-up when he plays the next Skyville Live streaming event on Aug. 24. The Killer teams with Chris Stapleton and Lee Ann Womack at the show, which specializes in unique collaborations. Previous participants have included Martina McBride, Gladys Knight, Lady Antebellum, Margo Price and Melissa Etheridge.

Kenny Rogers knows when to fold ’em and, it appears, how to do it right. He will bring his onstage career to a close with an Oct. 25 event, All in for the Gambler: Kenny Rogers’ Farewell Concert Celebra-tion, at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, joined by Dolly Parton, Alison Krauss, Little Big Town, Elle King, Jamey Johnson, Idina Manzel and The Flam-ing Lips, with more to be announced. Rogers gave it a special touch when he invited LBT to perform — he reached out to Sandbox Management with a note, but then went the extra distance. “He sent the four of us each a personal letter,” says Kimberly Schlapman. “Normally we get one of everything, so we’re like, ‘How are we going to split this up? Who gets it?’ But he had so much thoughtful-ness for the four of us. We cannot wait.”

Toby Keith brought along two unannounced guests when he played Nashville’s Ascend Amphitheater on July 20. Singer-songwriter Scotty Emerick was a bit obvious — Emerick toured with Keith for years and co-wrote “Beer for My Horses,” “Whiskey Girl” and “I Love This Bar.” The real surprise was a two-song set by Eddy Raven, whom Keith cited along with Earl Thomas Con-ley among his most influential icons during the 1980s. They turned in the former Raven hits “I Got Mexico” and “I Should’ve Called,” both of which are reimagined on Raven’s new All Grassed Up, a high-lonesome version of his hits with Carolina Road that was released the next day, July 21.

Sons of the Palomino make their Grand Ole Opry debut on July 29. Headed by singer-songwriter Jeffrey Steele (“Me and My Gang,” “Raise ’Em Up”), who played at the now-defunct Palomino in North Hollywood, the band features two members of The Time Jumpers — bassist Brad Albin and steel guitarist Paul Franklin — plus fiddler Larry Franklin, drummer Jerry Roe, pianist Tony Harrell and guitarist James Mitchell.

Sony Music Nashville surprised Kane Brown on July 17 with an RIAA-certified gold single for his Lauren Alaina collaboration, “What Ifs.” From left: William Morris Endeavor agent Braeden Rountree, EFG Management owner Martha Earls, Brown, RIAA director of communication and gold and platinum awards program Liz Kennedy and SMN chairman/CEO Randy Goodman.

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE JULY 24, 2017 | PAGE 14 OF 20

“There’s something cool about taking a heart-breaking song and putting cheerful sounds to it.”

Brett Young’s “Like I Loved You,” the follow-up to his No. 1 single “In Case You Didn’t Know,” is a study in opposite forces working together. It addresses a breakup — a real-life one, it turns out — but surrounds it with just enough upbeat pieces to help the listener absorb it. A spoonful of sugar, to quote the great philosopher Mary Poppins, helps the medicine go down.

Balancing sweet musical components and sour story lines is a much-used tool in popular music, employed to varying degrees in the Bee Gees’ “Tragedy,” Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day,” Thomas Rhett’s “Crash and Burn,” Smokey Robinson & The Miracles’ “Tears of a Clown” and even Billy Ray Cyrus’ “Achy Breaky Heart.”

“L i ke I L oved You” had t hat cont ra st embedded in it from the beginning. Songwriter Jesse Lee (“Peter Pan”) was visiting a home that then little-known Florida Georgia Line and Chase Rice shared. They called it the Fun House, and Lee was expecting a good time when the heartbreak set in.

“I was sitting in front of their house getting ready to go in for some kind of party, and my boyfriend called me,” she remembers. “We had just broken up, but we had just seen each other the night before so I thought we were getting back together, and when I told him I thought we were getting back together, he was like, ‘We can just be friends, and that’s all we’re going to be.’ I walked into their house crying, like ‘I’m never going to want to be your friend.’ And that was the last thing I ever said to him.”

Fast-forward to about 2014. Lee and Young were paired for a songwriting session at ole music, where she had a publishing deal at the time. They had never met before, and ideas were not flowing that morning. Eventually, they decided lunch was a better option than work. At the restaurant, Lee shared her Fun House sob story, and she was still angered by the idea that her ex had suggested they try to be friends. “He didn’t love me,” she told Young, “the way that I loved him.”

“I’m not used to someone being more passionate about something than I am,” reflects Young. “When I saw how worked up she got, I said, ‘That’s the song you’ve got to write.’ ”

They headed back to ole, and with Young manning an acoustic guitar — and relating to his own “let’s be friends” experiences — they worked through “Like I Loved You” in roughly 90 minutes. The ex’s challenging breakup monologue led to a series of short phrases strung together to form the chorus: “We could still be friends/Hang out on the weekends/You’re gonna be OK/If I start seein’/Somebody new/You hope that I do.” They followed that with yet another barrage of stabbing verbal nuggets.

The quick, relentless pacing of that chorus practically dictated the shape of the verses. “Both of us were struggling to find where to take breaths,” says Young. “So it was a conscious decision when we got to those verses to leave space. Otherwise, you’re going to have three-and-a-half minutes, and people are going to be passing out trying to sing it.”

Despite Young’s preference not to put bridges in his songs, “Like I Loved You” still felt like it needed a little more information when the verses were finished. So at the end of the second chorus, they dropped the last note and jumped right into a new section. But while the note disappears, the word it’s

associated with — “you” — does not.“It’s not cut off,” insists Lee. “You think that it’s cut off, but ‘you’ is the first

word of the bridge. So it’s ‘You never loved me like I loved, you always told me you’d never leave me.’ We did that purposefully.”

Lee sang harmonies behind Young on the demo, which introduced one of the sweet melodic counter-balances to the song’s sour plot. Guitarist Derek Wells invented a wafting instrumental hook for the intro, and “Like I Loved You”

became a key part of Young’s attempts to secure a recording deal. It was one of the songs Young used to pitch Big Machine Label Group (BMLG) when he signed his contract in summer 2015.

“I def initely knew from the beginning I wanted this to be on the record,” he says.

Producer Dann Huff (Keith Urban, Brantley Gilbert) was in full agreement, but they made some minor alterations, beginning with the key signature.

“We actually ended up bringing the key of the song down a little bit from the demo, which was scary to me, because that verse is in such a low place already,” says Young. “The [ends of the verses] before, in the higher key, were in falsetto, which was a really cool moment but didn’t feel like country music to me.”

Huff moved the opening riff from guitar to steel guitar, running Paul Franklin’s sound through a Leslie speaker to get a glassy tone. In addition, he weaved in numerous textures — Charlie Judge’s Hammond B-3 and several tracks by guitarist Rob McNelley, including what Huff calls “jangle parts” on the chorus — essen-

tially throwing more opposite ideas onto the track.“I patterned so much after what I learned from [producer] Mutt Lange

[Shania Twain, Def Leppard], and he always had counter-melodies going at all times,” says Huff. “It was kind of a moving backdrop.”

In the final moments of production, Huff heard an Alicia Keys song on the radio, and — after getting Young’s buy-in — he had Judge overdub jaunty acoustic-piano eighth notes in the intro, making the contrasts in “Like I Loved You” even more extreme.

“I’ve always liked that juxtaposition,” says Huff. “I’ve always liked uptempos that lead like ballads. I like songs that are inherently sad but don’t sound maudlin, that make you feel good while you feel bad.”

At a party for “Sleep Without You,” Young told Lee that if he got a fourth single off his self-titled debut album, “Like I Loved You” would probably be the one.

“Things that you don’t want to hear as a writer: ‘If I get it’ and ‘probably,’ ” says Lee. “That means you probably won’t go for a fourth single, and it won’t be ours.”

And it was not the fourth. Other tracks received some airplay, but “Like I Loved You” was downloaded and streamed more often. BMLG read that as a sign of consumer interest and made it single No. 3 for Young, releasing it to radio via PlayMPE on June 26. It ranked No. 1 New and Active a week ago and debuts the week of July 23 at No. 48 on Country Airplay.

That whole thing about just being friends is, of course, familiar to a whole lot of people, which might be the best way that “Like I Loved You” pours a little sugar on an otherwise bitter topic.

“The reason so many people are connecting [with it] is everyone has been there,” says Young. “Everyone has heard those words while someone is breaking up with them. Unfortunately, it’s all too common.”

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE JULY 24, 2017 | PAGE 15 OF 20

Small-market radio programmers don’t often get a lot of industry love. Tucked away in their tiny — but often extremely musically active — country music markets, they tend to be overlooked a bit by Music Row.

But on June 6 in Nashville, one such programmer received a significant honor. KPLM (Big 106) Palm Springs, Calif., PD Kory James was given the inaugural Innovation in Music Award (IMA) in the small-market category. (Nielsen ranks Palm Springs as market No. 132.)

James thinks he was chosen for the award because of his passion for music. “One of my favorite things, every single week, is to see what’s new out there,” he says. “That’s what’s exciting to me.”

And he has a particular process for auditioning songs for his current-based station. After he adds one to his playlist, he deletes it from digital delivery service PlayMPE so that the only songs the service contains are ones he’s not already playing. He then lets those un-added songs play on a loop all day in his office. Over the course of a couple of days, he says, “If there’s something I’m tapping my foot along to or singing along to,” it will get a closer look.

“It kind of baffles me when [other programmers] will wait so long to play something that’s obviously a hit,” he says of his programming philosophy. “I love playing new music. It’s exciting for me to give something that’s cool to my listeners.”

Among the artists he embraced early are California native Brett Young and newcomer Jordan Davis. James says Young told him KPLM was the first place he ever heard his debut single on the radio last year. He remembers Young describing the moment, which happened in a car, telling him, “I was so excited. I’m screaming and yelling and waving at other cars to turn on the station so they can hear me.”

That story made James’ day. “I’m very happy that I can make someone else that happy,” he says. “And that’s what we try and do daily with our listeners.”

In his IMAs acceptance speech, James revealed that he’s a second-generation

broadcaster. His father, Jim Keye, worked in radio for five decades as a sports broadcaster and play-by-play announcer. A young James sometimes accompanied his father to work, where he would soak up the business and occasionally do voice work when a child was needed for commercials. From there, he says he kind of “fell into” a broadcasting career, and has now been in the industry for more than two decades.

He started at KPLM in 1995 when he was just 20 and worked his way up before taking over programming at the Marker Broadcasting-owned station three years ago. He also voice-tracks the evening shift. A true mom-and-pop operation, Marker owns just three other stations, all of them in Palm Springs.

James’ longevity at the station is not an anomaly. “The people that are on the air here have been there forever,” he says. Midday host TLC has done middays for over 25 years, afternoon personality Ralph Squillace has done it for over 15, and morning show team Randy Houston and Jeff Michaels has done it for 17. Clearly, they have no difficulty retaining staff. Jokes James, “Yeah, they really hate it here.”

James chats with country programmers in larger markets and gets a laugh out of hearing them talk about their “street teams” and “part-timers.” He says, “We don’t have any of that, but we feel that we do a fantastic job” at super-serving the audience.

“The listener has so many different types of media they can get their music [from]: Spotify and Pandora and YouTube. [So] we try and be their buddy, and try to be as local as we can,” he explains. “Sure, satellite radio can play everything that we do and has less com-mercials, but if there is a fire over on Palm Canyon or the I-10 is backed up because there’s an accident, the

listener doesn’t get to hear that … You have to be local to be able to compete.”James views KPLM’s contribution to the industry in casino patron terms.

“You have your whales,” he says, “but you also have your penny players. But if they play enough, they can certainly help you out, too.”

Country Indicator

CHARTS LEGENDRANKINGSCountry Airplay is ranked by total audience impressions for the week ending Sunday based on monitored airplay of 144 stations by Nielsen BDS. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Arbitron Inc. copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2017, Arbitron Inc.) Country Indicator is tabulated using reported playlists and Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay at 106 stations, ranked by total plays.

BULLETSl Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored

station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week.

TIESOn Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first.

RECURRENTSOn Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they are not still

gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of (non-bulleted) audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks or if they post a third consecutive week of decline in plays after 10 weeks.

HOT SHOT DEBUTAwarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay and Country Indicator, respectively.

MOST ADDEDThe total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS) for stations that do not report adds.

MOST INCREASED AUDIENCE/PLAYSMost Increased Audience on Country Airplay and Most Increased Plays on Country Indicator list the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience or plays, respectively.

AIRPOWERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience.

BREAKERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time.
