З Obtain a floor plan of your new home and decide which household goods to keep and which to let go.

З Decide whether you’re going to hire professionals or do the move yourself. If you’re hiring movers, now is the time to start the process by getting at least three estimates.

З Arrange for transfer of your child’s school records.

З Start creating a list of people who need to be notified about your change of address and keep it handy so you can add to it as you think of people.

З Make a list of packing supplies you’ll need and order them.

З Buy a lockable box for important files and documents like birth certificates, insurance policies, etc.

З Meet with your mover to discuss cost, liability coverage, packing, loading, and delivery/claims procedures.

З Sort through and throw out, give away or sell things you don’t want or need.

З Contact insurance companies, doctors, and dentists about forwarding your records.

З Determine how your pets will be moved on moving day.

З Arrange cut-off dates for utilities, including phone, gas, electricity, water, and cable.

З Fill out a Post Office change of address kit online.

З Contact your alarm company to cancel service for after the move.

З Arrange for repair work on your new house.

З Have your car serviced to avoid a breakdown on moving day.

З Call your homeowner’s insurance provider and arrange the date for coverage to end.

З Start eating the items in your pantry, refrigerator, and freezer. Buy only the minimum groceries you need for the next four weeks.

З Schedule to have appliances and utilities disconnected in old house; schedule hookup for new house.

З Continue packing, labeling, and storing boxes.

З Prepare car registrations and insurance records for transfer.

З Notify the state Department of Motor Vehicles of your new address.

1 Week Before Moving

Moving Day

З Confirm moving date and details with the moving company.

З Get a bank check to pay the mover if necessary and certified funds for closing, if possible.

З Discontinue home-delivery services. (E.g. Newspapers, Subscriptions, etc.)

З Close local charge accounts, transfer bank accounts, and release safe deposit boxes.

З Go over the “Countdown to Move Day” again.

З Be present to answer the moving crew’s questions.

З Check the driver’s moving receipt for correct information.

З Pack all last minute items.

З Perform a final inspection on our old home to make sure that you didn’t forget to pack any items or to disconnect any appliances.

З Leave keys, garage door openers, appliance manuals, etc. for new owner.
