NON-CREDIT REGISTRATION INFORMATIONWhen to RegisterMany classes fill quickly. We recommend that students register and pay their fees as early as possible, but not later than five days prior to the start date. REGISTER EARLY!

Non-Credit Course Fees Non-Credit Course Fees are due at the time of registration. Payment may be made by credit card (Visa, Mastercard, or Discover), check, money order, or cash. Faxed registrations must be paid by credit card. Students owing money for credit/non-credit courses, must first satisfy the outstanding debt before registration can be permitted for non-credit courses.

How to RegisterYou may register and pay your fees online by fax, or by mail. Online and faxed applications require the use of Mastercard, Visa, or Discover. Fees are due at the time you register. Our office is located in the Freeman Building on the Southwest Tennessee Community College Macon Cove Campus, 5983 Macon Cove. Office Hours are 8 a.m –4:30 p.m. Monday–Friday, excluding holidays. Textbook InformationTextbooks are required for many of the classes and may be purchased in the campus bookstores. If you need to contact the campus bookstores, call the Macon Cove Campus Bookstore at (901) 333-4227 or the Union Avenue Campus Bookstore at (901) 333-5452. If the course description is not specific as to whether you need to purchase a textbook, please call (901) 333-4207. Do not write in or unwrap your books until the first class meeting. Be sure to keep your receipt and familiarize yourself with bookstore policies. Textbooks for most one- or two-day computer classes are included in the price of the class and will be issued on the first day of class.

ParkingParking is free to Corporate Training & Continuing Education students enrolled in non-credit classes on all Southwest campuses/centers and sites. Students may cut out the temporary parking permit on this page or print a copy from our website to display on their windshield. Students should park only in areas designated for students (white lined areas). Red lines are reserved for faculty/staff and green areas are reserved for visitors. For a complete list of parking rules and regulations, please go to www.southwest.tn.edu/ce.

Cancellations and ChangesWe reserve the right to cancel, postpone, limit enrollment, split or combine classes, or change instructors and class locations when necessary. Posted non-credit course fees are subject to change.

Inclement Weather Inclement weather sometimes requires that classes be rescheduled. Southwest notifies the public of closings via the college’s website at www.southwest.tn.edu and the local broadcast news media. If the college is closed, our classes will not be held.

Returned Check FeeIf a check presented for registration is returned by the bank, a $30 penalty is assessed. The student will be withdrawn from school if the check is not redeemed and the $30 penalty paid (in cash) within 10 days. All other returned checks are also subject to a $30 penalty.

Transcripts For transcripts of non-credit courses taken prior to the Fall 2009 term, please request a transcript from the college’s admission and records office. Fees for transcripts and certificate replacements are subject to change. Transcripts for non-credit courses are maintained for five years. Please allow at least 5 business days for processing.

ACADEMIC SKILLS AND EXAM PREPARATION

ACT Exam Preparation $168This course helps students to develop the confidence and test taking skills necessary for a strong performance on the American College Testing (ACT) exam required by colleges and universities across the nation. Better scores can lead to more choices and scholarship opportunities. This 16-hour course includes a review of English, mathematics, social studies and science. Practice tests will also be given. A book is required for this course and can be purchased at the campus bookstore. Students must be in high school to take this course.

Additional ACT InformationSouthwest is a testing center for the Residual ACT. The results of this test will only be reported to Southwest. Students who want to have ACT results sent to other colleges, institutions or agencies must take the National ACT on one of the five national test dates.

Students who wish to schedule a Residual ACT must schedule and pay for the test online at www.southwest.tn.edu/testing.htm. Students who do not have placement scores or transferrable credit from another institution, will need to schedule the ACT National/Residual or ACCUPLACER exam. There is a $35 non-refundable, non-transferable fee to take the Residual ACT.

You may also practice online at the ACT Test Prep website.

Note: The Residual ACT will take approximately four hours to complete.

National ACTTo register for the National ACT, please visit www.act.org for scheduling and payment. Various sites are available for testing. Typically, Southwest Tennessee Community College administers the National ACT in April, June, and December of each year.

HiSET Preparation $145This is an in-depth course covering 42 hours of classroom training. The course includes an intensive study of literature, English usage, essay writing, science, social studies, and mathematics as they appear on the HISET test. This program is open to persons 18 years of age and older who are not enrolled in high school. Textbook not included in cost of course. (4.2 C.E.U.s ) If you have taken the pre-test, please bring scores to class.

English as a Second Language: Level 1 $145This course is designed to build the English oral language of non-native speakers of English. It will focus on the de-velopment of speaking and listening skills with common vocabulary in simple sentences that reflect real life situ-ations. Students gain confidence for everyday survival in the work place, school, social settings and other real life interactions. (3.6 C.E.U.s) The textbook is not included in the cost of the course.

Additional Compass® ESL InformationThe Union Avenue Campus Testing Center will administer the COMPASS® ESL test by appointment only. Please visit AdvisorTrac to schedule a COMPASS® ESL test on the Union Avenue Campus. If you are not a Southwest student or do not have access to a computer, contact the Testing Center at 901-333-4170 to schedule an ap-pointment. An Online Admissions Application must be submitted five (5) business days prior to testing.

The COMPASS® ESL test is a computerized placement test designed to test non-native English speakers’ abilities in four areas – Listening, Reading, Grammar/Usage, and Essay – and place them in appropriate ESL courses. The COMPASS® ESL test is administered continuously through-out each semester, Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and Fridays 8:30 a.m. to Noon.

TUITION-FREEEDUCATION FORTENNESSEE ADULTS

The Tennessee Reconnect is a last-dollar scholarship for adults to attend a community college tuition-free, meaning the scholarship will cover tuition and fees not covered by the Pell grant and other local, state and federal scholarships and grants.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?Adults who:• Do not have an associate or bachelor’s degree.• Are a U.S. Citizen or eligible non-citizen.• Are a Tennessee resident (at least one year prior to application).• Have completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

and are declared an independent student.• Are admitted to an eligible institution where they enroll in a degree or

certificate program at least part-time.• Participate in a college success program as determined by THEC.

HEALTH AND MEDICALMedical Administrative Assistant Programwith a Clinical Rotation $1,199 This 50-hour course prepares students to function effectively in many of the administrative and clerical positions in the health care industry. Medical Administrative Assistants, Medical Secretary, and Medical Records Clerks are all positions in great demand. This program covers important background information on the medical assisting profession and interpersonal skills, medical ethics and law, medical terminology, basics of insurance billing and coding, telephone techniques, scheduling appointments, medical records management and management of practice finances. This program is intended to provide students with a well-rounded introduction to medical administration so that a student can gain the necessary skills required to obtain a medical administrative assistant position in the health care field. This program includes 50 hours of classroom lecture and hands on labs and a clinical externship opportunity at a local healthcare provider. To be eligible for the clinical rotation, students must successfully complete the 50 hour program, submit to a thorough background check and drug screening and meet other requirements. Note: This program meets the necessary requirements to take the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) - Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) exam. Technicians also work with patients during dialysis procedures and monitor and record vital signs as well as administer local anesthetics and drugs as needed. Additionally, they may be involved in the training of patients for at-home dialysis treatment. Note: This program does not include a national or state certification as part of its overall objectives. Dental Assisting Programwith a Clinical Externship $1,299This 60 classroom plus 40 hour clinical time Dental Assisting Program prepares students for entry level positions in one of the fastest growing health care positions. The purpose of this course is to familiarize the student with all areas of pre-clinical dental assisting and provide training in the professional skills required to function as an assistant in the dental practice. This course covers the following key areas and topics: Administrative Aspects include the history of dentistry and dental assisting; introduction to the dental office; the legal aspects of dentistry; and policies and guidelines. Clinical Aspects include introduction to oral anatomy; dental operatory; dental equipment; introduction to tooth structure; primary and permanent teeth; oral cavity and related structures; and other areas. In addition to entry-level administrative jobs, this course is ideal for students interested in pursuing a future formal Dental Hygienist program. Clinical Medical Assistant $2,499This program prepares students to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical aspects of a medical office. Instruction includes preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, pharmacology, taking and documenting vital signs, technical aspects of phlebotomy, the 12-lead EKG and the cardiac life cycle.

Dental Assisting Program $1,299The program prepares students for entry-level positions as a chair-side dental assistant. This course covers the history of dentistry, introduction to the dental office, the legal aspects of dentistry, introduction to oral anatomy, dental operatory, introduction to tooth structure (primary and permanent teeth), the oral cavity; and other areas.

Medical Billing & Coding $1,799

This billing and coding course delivers the skills students need to solve insurance billing and coding problems. It details proper assignment of codes and the process to file claims for reimbursement. With the transition to ICD-10, effective as of October 1, 2015, this course will now provide training in the ICD-10-CM code set. This course also covers: an overview of the healthcare and insurance industry, the organization and use of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS manuals to identify correct codes, CPT (Introduction, Guidelines, Evaluation and Management) and specialty fields such as surgery, radiology and laboratory.

Medical Coding ICD-10 $999

Effective October 2014, the US healthcare system must move from ICD-9 to ICD-10 for service coding purposes. Program includes a detailed review of both ICD-10 (diagnostic coding) and ICD-10-PCS (inpatient procedural coding); differences between ICD-9 and ICD-10; federal regulation; hands on exercises and case studies; and much more!

This EKG Technician Program prepares students to perform EKG’s. This program prepares students to understand and use electronic records in a medical practice. The Phlebotomy Technician Program prepares students to collect blood specimens from clients for the purpose of laboratory analysis. Students will become familiar with all aspects of blood collection and will review the skills needed to perform venipunctures safely. Medical Administrative Assistant Program $1,299

Motorcycle Rider Course $150

This course is designed for the beginning or less experienced rider, 14 years and older, who wants to learn to ride in a safe manner. Learn the operation of controls, basic maneuvers, street riding, defensive riding, and handling emergencies. • The student will be coached to develop mental and

physical skills of basic control that include: clutch/throttle control, straight line riding and stopping, turning, shifting, cornering, swerving, and risk management. If you have significant difficulty and cannot meet the minimum objective of the range exercises, become a risk to yourself or others or commit an unsafe act, you will not be permitted to continue to ride.

• Successfully complete both the written and skills test and receive a certificate from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and the state of Tennessee. You are then eligible for a discount on liability insurance and earn an exemption from the state motorcycle operator’s license skill and written examinations.

• Students must provide the following equipment: long-sleeve shirt or jacket; full-length pants (jeans or other sturdy material); leather or heavy cloth gloves; over-the-ankle boots; a helmet complete with face shield (helmet available from instructors); and rain gear. Classes are conducted rain or shine. Motorcycles will be provided.

Note: An additional $45 lab fee (payable by cash or check) will be required the first night of class.

Safety and Refund Policy: • Students must be able to ride a bicycle, and

be coordinated and strong enough to handle the added weight and power of a motorcycle. Shifting gears on a motorcycle may be challenging for some beginners. Some preliminary practice will improve the student’s chance of successfully completing the skills test.

• Students are encouraged to arrive at least 15 minutes early for each class period. Valuable instruction is given each class period that is necessary for students in order to continue the class.

• Students who arrive late to any class, who drop motorcycles, or who demonstrate a safety risk to themselves or others will be dismissed from the class without refund.

• Students who show up late or fail to show up for class without officially withdrawing at least 2 full business days prior to the first day of class will NOT receive refunds.

• All classes will begin as scheduled. However, range times for classes may be adjusted due to extreme heat or cold weather.

CLASS SCHEDULES:All classes meet over one weekend and will be conducted Friday evening, 6-10 p.m.; Saturday, 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Sunday, 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Classes meet at the Macon Cove Campus in the Fulton Building, Room 114. Classes fill quickly, so register early. We also recommend registering online, as registrations are processed in real time.

Handgun Permit Class $65Do you know the laws concerning the owning, transporting, or discharging of a handgun? Do you know how to handle a handgun safely? These subjects will be covered in an eight-hour firearms safety workshop that will take you through the legal rights of handgun ownership, as well as teach you the safe and proper usage of a handgun. • Students who own a handgun are encouraged to bring

it unloaded along with ammunition to the firing range on Saturday.

• Do NOT bring any handgun to class. If you do not have a handgun, there are .38 caliber pistols available for students to use. Ammunition for .38 caliber handguns will be provided, and is included in the cost of this course.

• Students bringing their own pistol other than a .38 caliber will need to provide their own ammunition for Saturday’s firing range. The course will be divided between a four-hour classroom lecture/discussion session and a four-hour Saturday morning firing range session.

• Note: This course satisfies the State of Tennessee training requirements for a Tennessee resident to apply for a permit to carry a firearm. Students who successfully complete the course and are 21 years of age will receive a Tennessee Department of Safety Handgun Safety Training Certificate, that they can use to apply for their permit.

• Tennessee residents must show proof of citizenship or legal residency when they attend class. Acceptable documentation includes an original birth certificate, passport or driver’s license. This course is an 8 contact hour course, and successful completion earns the student 0.8 CEUs.

• This class meets Saturday, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Southwest. • NOTE: The Saturday class end time may vary based on

the number of students in the class.

Alive at 25 $45Proven to help teach young adults to drive safely and responsiblyAlive at 25 is a highly interactive course that helps young adults under the age of 25 take greater responsibility for their driving by focusing on behavior, judgement and deci-sion making. Available in English, this 4-hour classroom course is an excellent complement to driver education programs that traditionally focus on state laws and vehicle and road handling.

Defensive Driving (DDC) 4-Hour $40DDC 4 Provides key understanding, skills and techniques to avoid collisions, reduce traffic violations and change driver behaviors and attitudes. DDC 4 offers the greatest flex-ibility for organizations who would like to customize their training program in session blocks.
