There were a good number of cars on tour. Mike and Janine enjoyed a look at the collection. The Franklin wasn’t quite complete but running, so the owner elected to bring it along, sans grill and hood.

In addition to cars, Mike has some interesting motorcycles: Indians, Harleys of prewar vintage and modern ones as well.

Our next stop was Sid Chantland’s Collection which was largely motorcycles but also included militaria. John and Jean Bowron seemed to enjoy the stuff. Seen on the right are a couple Ariel Square Fours from the 50’s.

The militaria ranged from a WW2 Half Track, a cutaway 14 Cylinder Radial and a Motorcycle/Sidecar used by the Africa Korps in WW2 complete with MG 34 machine gun.

As an airplane ex-modeler, my favorites were some of the scale aircraft engines. We saw an operating OX 5 at left, a ¼ scale, a LeRhone rotary engine used in Nieuports at center and some vintage model motors from the 30’s.

Some of the bikes were rough, home built affairs and some were beautiful vintage machines like this English HRD.

After a good look around, we moved on to the John River’s Collection. John’s focus was vintage cars which he has been collecting since the late 50’s. He was nattily dressed as an Oldsmobile service person and described the collection before we had a look around. He’s owned the ’26 Model T since 1957.

His father sold farm implements and some nice tractors were on display. John Ward checks out the rolling stock. I wasn’t really going for the self-portrait on the Pierce Arrow but got one anyway…

After John’s we had lunch at Classic Rides and Rods in Annandale, a nice spot to park and a break for the participants.

After Lunch, it was on to the Jim Hudson Collection. Jim has a very pristine collection of a variety of prewar and post war cars in a very nice building. Jim spoke a bit about the collection and we then saw some interesting cars. Jim likes neon.

Jim’s facility has a spray booth in it and a Buick was primed and ready for paint. Some cars had been moved outside: a Railton and a ’34 60 series Buick are seen in the foreground. The blue coupe is a Hudson.

Our next stop was the Veit Automotive Foundation for a look at their horsepower. In this case, a horse arena made almost completely of recycled material from the old U of M field house, which Veit was hired to tear down and haul away. The scale of the place was impressive and the horses seem to live in style.

From the horse stables, we moved on to the main event: Mr. Vs Car Collection, housed again in a spectacular building made (I suspect) from more recycled material. This seems entirely different than I recall from a few years back when we last visited.

We queued to sign in at the log kept of visitors before we got a look inside. Mr. V is mainly into post wars, resto mods and Hotrods, and the scale and beauty are impressive. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen this many restored vintage gas pumps anywhere else.

It’s truly spring and another Classic Car Garage Tour is in the rear-view mirror. It was a great day of driving, seeing friends and amazing stuff people are passionate about.

The Packard National 2018 in Columbus, OhioBy Tom Brace

Gunta and I recently returned from the 53rd National Packard Meet. The Meet was chaired by George Holinga and he did a wonderful job. The Hotel was a Marriott in Dublin, Ohio. One cannot help but reflect on these National Meets through the years and some of the changes that have occurred.

There is a trend to travel by bus. These big air -conditioned method of travel included a bathroom in the back and the capability to have a guide give a narration or some type of video/film played while you travel. You still drive to the judging field from the hotel which has been a tradition for many years and I hope never changes.

We went to a most unusual museum called the Motts Military Museum. It was a collection that one would not see in other museums and appeared to be the work of one man. He also had a crushed fire truck from 911 that had pulled up to the Twin Towers just after the impact. Some firefighters dove under the truck and were saved when the buildings came down. As someone who has been involved with the Fire Service for over 41 years, this site was chilling.

We also saw some covered bridges that are always a pleasure to view. One of our buses high-centered and provided some interesting moments until we all loaded in the other bus and several cars. Two county deputies were of great help and a young woman driver backed one of these buses over a mile up a curving hill. She was terrific.

I would be remiss if I did not recognize President Craig Handley and the wonderful team he has put together. Packard Automobile Classics, Inc is in good fiscal shape. The membership is solid and new people are stepping up to continue helping the Club prosper. We have great publications thanks to the work of Craig and Stuart Blond. We have a great club and it deserves our support.

Judging Day was at Dublin Metro Place. It was a beautiful location where our beloved Packards were parked on grass covered rolling hills. Judging on grass really does show off our cars to a better advantage. David Robinson did his usual fine job of leading the judging teams who had some difficult times with judging some exceptional cars.

THE PACKARD NATIONAL 2018 IN COLUMBUS, OHIO – CONTINUED

Torsion Ride Seminar

This Meet had special lecture series in the evenings that were most interesting. One of the speakers had worked on the torsion bar system as a young engineer. Another speaker talked about his design work with various car manufacturers. The orignal torsion ride demonstrator has been restored and was shown at this years meet, a seminar on the history and operation of the vechicle was given by Walter McCoskey on July 4th.

The restored condition is top notch and the poster shows the developer, Dick Allison and family, riding in the unit when it was first developed.

There is something for everyone at a National Meet including wives and significant others. If you like to drive your Packard, there are opportunities. If you like to find good deals in the indoor vending areas, there is a wealth of things that you can see. Imagine a group of vending tables that are all Packard parts.

There are so many things that you can do, all you have to do is pick which sound the most interesting. I believe that you get good value for your money not only for the activities but also the hotel. If you have never gone, why not consider attending and talk “Packard” for a week.
