There still is a chance that streak gets to 41, but Miller and other area baseball coaches acknowledge it’s slim.

Also in the email, the OHSAA said it is doing “worst-case planning” for any potential impact the pandemic may have on offseason programs in the summer and on fall sports.

The Independent and Repository contacted sev-eral Stark County coaches Wednesday to see how they are handling things in their programs

Already in limboThere may be few

football coaches in Stark County better prepared to handle any possible adjustments to the foot-ball season than Fairless head coach A.J. Sarbaugh, who also is the school’s softball coach. He already has one team in limbo.

“I feel terrible for my six (softball) seniors,” Sarbaugh said. “You’re sitting back and you’re talking to assistant coaches or you’re talk-ing to other people, and you’re like, ‘You went through all of this condi-tioning, you went through hitting, you went through indoor league, and then you’re getting ready for your season, and it’s not there.’ ”

The big impact on football right now is each team’s offseason weight program.

McKinley head coach Marcus Wattley said his Bulldogs were performing well in workouts and he has tried to give them the resources to continue that momentum during the hiatus.

“They have enough information, where they can take whatever (equip-ment) they have and get their workouts in,” he said. “They can still run, they can still do stuff on their own. It’s just about how hungry and eager they are to get better.

“You can’t make excuses because everyone is going through the same thing. We just tell them to stay active, stay on their grades, stay out of trouble and do what they’re sup-posed to do.”

Using technologyGlenOak head coach

Beau Balderson is enter-ing his second season with the Golden Eagles. After going 1-9 with a young roster last season, this offseason was going to be huge, Balderson said.

“Oh man, it’s the most frustrating thing,” he said. “We played a lot of sophomores and juniors last year and there were games where we got phys-ically beat up. I did not see that coming this year. Kids were finally going to spend a whole year in the weight room, getting stronger and building bonds, and it all came to a screeching halt.”

Balderson set up a Google Classroom where he could post workouts for his players, but he

knows home workouts can’t compare to team workouts.

“It’s different when you have competition and your teammates and coaches are pushing you,” he said. “A handful of guys have weights at home and everyone can get out and run, but it’s not the same.”

Using technology, though, is enabling the coach to attempt to main-tain some semblance of a workout.

“Our strength pro-gram is on a program application now called TeamBuildr, so every-thing that we do is online,” Moore said of Massillon. “It was as smooth a transition as you could possibly have, I would say. They still have their regular workouts on the TeamBuildr app that they can log on to.”

Coronavirus concernsWhen asked if he thinks

players and parents will be worried about resuming football in the summer, Wattley said it comes down to trusting the authorities when they say it’s safe to resume sports.

“I think people will trust the protocol they tell you to follow and I know we’ll follow ours to a ‘T,’ ” he said. “If anything, we’ll go a step further to make sure everyone is safe and that we’re doing the right things. You can’t guar-antee anything, but we’ll do as much as we possi-bly can to make sure that everyone is taken care of.”

While some players and parents may be concerned about playing a contact sport before the coro-navirus is eradicated, Balderson is more worried about the locker room.

“I’d say at least once a season the flu hits the locker room,” he said. “For us, it was Week 3 last year against Aus-tintown Fitch. For others, it was Weeks 4, 5 and 6. It spreads like that.

“But the flu is one thing. This is a completely dif-ferent animal. It’s one thing when you’re outside in an open area and physi-cally hitting, but when kids are in close contact

in an enclosed space, it seems like that’s when things like that (viruses) really take off.”

Looking aheadWith each extension

of stay-at-home orders by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, the chances of the football season being impacted increase. Fall practices for football are set to begin statewide Aug. 1.

“As far as we’re con-cerned, with our football preparing for the worst, we’re not getting too far ahead of ourselves,” Jack-son head coach Tim Budd said. “We’re looking at what we’ve got upcoming in May and June and just kind of put together some dates where we have to make a decision on what we’re going to do.

“I don’t want to get too far ahead, because we don’t know what the world’s going to look like in two weeks, let alone two months. So to try to project all the way out to August, let’s say, there’s just too many moving parts.”

Balderson has created two offseason calendars, one for if his players are back in June and the other if they’re back in July.

“Once you get beyond that, it’s a little sketchy,” he said.

There is one definitive thing that Budd knows to be true. Or, at least, he knows he will make it true for his team.

That will be how his players respond once they return to football activities.

“Maybe this fall sports season, our perspective ought to be a little differ-ent,” Budd said. “Nothing about what leads up to it is going to be the same as it has been. Maybe we need to look at this as an opportunity for kids to get back together with their friends, resume a normal life and just enjoy recre-ation and enjoy being with their peers. If that hap-pens, then in my opinion, this football season would be a success, irregardless of wins or losses.”

Repository sports writer Joe Scalzo contributed to this story.

COACHESFrom Page C1

INDEPENDENT KEVIN WHITLOCK

n Massillon head coach Nate Moore said his team is trying its best to work through the unknowns that exist during the offseason due to the coronavirus.

Hagy would then like four to five weeks of regular-season play before the tournament. The sectional tourna-ment was originally scheduled for May 9 through 16, followed by the district (18 through 23), regional (27 through 30) and state tournaments (June 4 through 6).

But the season wouldn’t have ended until June 13, so if the OHSAA were to add a few weeks, it wouldn’t be too dis-ruptive, he said.

“I’m sure the ADs (athletic directors) have a plan,” Hagy said.

Lake is projected as a state champion-ship contender in Division I, returning seven senior starters from last year’s Federal League championship team that lost 1-0 to eventual state champion Louisville in the district final. All seven will play college softball at the Division I or II level.

“At this point, we’re just hoping to play again,” Hagy said. “But I think May 1 is probably the latest we could go. After that, it would be tough. We’re hopeful, but nobody really knows for sure what’s going to happen.”

STREAKSFrom Page C1

“From the OHSAA’s per-spective, I’m not sure how far they can push back the start of sectional-district (tournament) play.

“But you need a period of acclimation for your arms to be ready and for timing on the swings.”

The building up of arm strength and having enough pitching depth overall are two major concerns for base-ball’s chances.

Miller has 16 total players in his Division IV program, so it’s not like he has a deep stable of arms at his disposal.

Keep in mind, players aren’t able to train right now with coaches or practice at school facilities during this no-contact period. Some kids might be able to do only limited baseball-related work, if any at all.

“Is my No. 1 pitcher

going to be able to throw 75 pitches?” Louisville head coach Brian Warner said of playing games after a week or two of practice. “I think

player safety is going to come into play.”

Warner believes some strict pitch counts could be instituted if the season does start.

If teams need two weeks to get ready, that means the season starts in mid May at best (when sectional tourna-ment play typically begins). The state tournament is scheduled for June 11-13, a date that likely would need to be pushed back if the season happens. But coaches are unsure how far into the summer the season could be pushed for a variety of reasons.

What does an abbreviated regular season look like? Miller feels like something around 15 games is a doable target, although that could be high.

Miller is a 1970 graduate of Canton Lincoln. He remem-bers a season as a player in which his Lincoln team was just 9-3 going into the

tournament because of bad spring weather.

Despite all the hurdles, Gamble emphasizes this: “If they give us a chance to play, we’re going to play.”

These are frustrating times for coaches and athletes.

Many of Warner’s eight seniors this season were stuck behind the 12 seniors on last year’s team. This is supposed to be their moment.

This is supposed to be Miller’s 41st season coach-ing baseball and 39th as a head coach (his fourth at East Canton after a legendary run at Central Catholic).

For now he waits and hopes that it materializes in some form.

“It just makes you take a break and realize how much you love the game and love the kids,” he said. “I miss the kids. I miss seeing them. I miss practice.”

CORONAVIRUS UPDATES

Wimbledon is canceledFor the first time in its nearly century-

and-a-half history, Wimbledon was canceled for a reason other than war, scrapped in 2020 on Wednesday because of the coronavirus pandemic.

With Britain under a nationwide lock-down, the All England Club announced its decision to call off its storied two-week grass-court tennis tournament, something that hadn’t happened to the sport’s oldest Grand Slam event in 75 years.

“It has weighed heavily on our minds that the staging of The Championships has only been interrupted previously by World Wars,” club chairman Ian Hewitt said, “but, following thorough and extensive consid-eration of all scenarios, we believe that it is a measure of this global crisis that it is ultimately the right decision to cancel this year’s Championships, and instead con-centrate on how we can use the breadth of Wimbledon’s resources to help those in our local communities and beyond.”

Wimbledon was scheduled to be played on the outskirts of London from June 29 to July 12. Instead, the next edition of the tour-nament will be June 28 to July 11, 2021.

Eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer surely spoke for many tennis play-ers, officials and fans with a one-word message on Twitter: “Devastated.”

Also Wednesday, the ATP and WTA announced that the men’s and women’s professional tours would be suspended until at least July 13, bringing the number of elite tennis tournaments affected by the new coronavirus since early March to more than 30. The top tours already had been on hold through June 7.

Wimbledon is the first Grand Slam tournament wiped out because of the coro-navirus; the start of the French Open was postponed from late May to late September.

Shortly after the news came from Wimble-don, the U.S. Tennis Association issued a statement saying it “still plans to host the U.S. Open as scheduled,” from Aug. 31 to Sept. 13 in New York.

BASEBALL: Rangers veteran and former Indians player Shin-Soo Choo is helping out financially strapped minor league play-ers with the season on hold, giving $1,000 each to 191 of them who are in the Texas organization. Choo said Wednesday that he remembers the financial struggles when he was in the minors.

NCAA: The recruiting dead period has been extended in all NCAA Division I and II sports through May 31. Recruiting was shut down on March 13, not long after the cancellation of all winter and spring sports because of the new coronavirus outbreak. The original suspension was through April 15.

RUNNING: The Boston Marathon is offering refunds for the first time Race organizers say anyone who was entered in the 124th edition of the race this month can still run on the rescheduled date, Sept. 14. But if they can’t make it, they can have their money back.

NBA: Brooklyn Nets general manager Sean Marks says the four players who tested positive for the new coronavirus have com-pleted their two weeks of isolation and are now symptom-free. The Nets announced on March 17 that four players had tested positive.

BROWNS: Browns cornerback Denzel Ward is lending a financial hand to 21 people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Through his foundation, Make Them Know Your Name, Ward will pay a major expense for 21 service workers and small business owners to help offset the a big economic blow suffered by the shutdown. Ward wears No. 21. “Whether that’s rent or mortgage

or just groceries for your family, I want someone to breathe a little easier knowing it’s taken care of this month,” Ward said. Ward and others will review applications and stories submitted through his founda-tion’s website (www.MTKYN.org)

PRO SOCCER: Major League Soccer plans to cut the pay of some executives and front office personnel while the season is on hold because of the coronavirus pandemic, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press. MLS Commissioner Don Garber and Deputy Commissioners Mark Abbott and Gary Stevenson will take 25% cuts in salary starting April 16, the person said on the condition of anonymity because the reductions were not announced publicly. Other cuts would range from 20% to 10% for managerial staff. Lower salaried employees, like entry-level hires, would see no reduction in pay. The cuts were first reported by Yahoo Sports.

UFC UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov says he won’t leave quar-antine in Russia to fight, dealing another blow to UFC President Dana White’s deter-mination to hold UFC 249 on April 18 amid the coronavirus pandemic. Nurmagomedov made his announcement Wednesday on Instagram, telling the mixed martial arts world to “take care of yourself and put yourself in my shoes.” Nurmagomedov (28-0) was scheduled to fight top contender Tony Ferguson (25-3) in the main event of UFC 249 in two weeks. The show was initially slated for Barclays Center in Brook-lyn before the pandemic threw the UFC’s schedule into upheaval.

Keith Wesson, Kaleb’s father, told The Dispatch on Tuesday that the unknowns are making it difficult for the family to get a read on what the future could hold after having submitted paperwork to the NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee.

“He’ll definitely test the waters, but he’s going to maintain his eligibility based upon information because it’s just so unknown,” Keith Wesson said. “There may not be any opportunities to increase your value from the standpoint of workouts and combines and really solidify your position.”

The NBA has tentatively set dates for the draft while recognizing that there is no concrete date for the resumption of the season, which has been suspended by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Underclassmen have until April 26 to declare for the draft, with the draft com-bine scheduled for May 19-24 and the deadline to withdraw from the draft and retain NCAA eligibil-ity set for June 3.

All of that is guesswork at this point, and the uncertainty is especially impactful on a player such

as Wesson.After shedding nearly

50 pounds during the offseason, he showed a more well-rounded game as a junior. The 6-foot-9 Wesson shot a career-high 42.5% from three-point range while averaging a team-high 14.0 points and career-high 9.3 rebounds per game. He finished with 11 double-doubles and was third in Big Ten games in three-point shooting.

Defensively, the weight loss and improved con-ditioning helped him become a more adept ball-screen defender and allowed him to cut down on foul trouble.

It also helped Ohio State to a 21-10 record and had the Buckeyes looking to make a deep run in first the Big Ten tournament and then the NCAA Tour-nament, both of which were canceled. That, too, removed a potential platform for Wesson to showcase his talents on a national stage.

But his shortened season is all on video, and it has moved him into the second round of most NBA mock drafts. But the ability to show his game in NBA workouts might not be available this year, preventing him from solidifying or improving his stock in the draft.

“Oh, yeah, it definitely

increases the chances of coming back,” Keith Wesson said. “Nobody knows anything. We’ve talked to several different agents through the pro-cess of interviewing, and literally none of them know anything. They say the draft is going to be moved back. They don’t know when or if combines or workouts are going to happen.”

Players are permitted to work with certified agents through the draft process and still retain collegiate eligibility.

After a sophomore season in which he aver-aged 14.6 points and 6.9 rebounds, Wesson went through the NBA draft process without hiring an agent and had workouts for the Boston Celtics and Atlanta Hawks before returning to Ohio State.

Securing more work-outs would go a long way toward not only solidify-ing a spot in the draft but potentially climbing the draft board.

“Nobody even knows if there are going to be workouts, and if they are, they may be very limited,” Keith Wesson said. “In a normal year he may get eight to 10 workouts. Now they’re saying if they do get workouts, that will turn into three or four.”

It’s a long way from where the junior expected to be in April.

Love doesn’t want to see altering of NBA scheduleBy Marla RidenourAkron Beacon Journal

Cavaliers’ five-time All-Star forward Kevin Love believes the NBA will finish the regular season in some fashion and remains hopeful that the coronavirus pandemic will not affect the league’s schedule for 2020-21.

Speaking on “The Daily Show” with Trevor Noah on Tuesday night on Comedy Central, Love said he had been discussing scenarios for 2020-21 with a number of players and a couple of coaches and former coaches.

There has been speculation that the with the current season suspended and the likelihood that the playoffs will finish later than June 21, originally set as the last possible date for a Finals Game 7, the start of next season will be pushed back.

“We have the best schedule, it’s a scholastic schedule, you get sum-mers off,” Love said during his remote appearance. “So selfishly, and I’ve done it for 25 years now of organized basketball, we’ve always had that schedule where it’s been September and October through, if you go all the way to the Finals it’s through June. We have it really good. That’s not lost on any of us.”

As for the present situation, Love said he would like to play a few more regular-season games and mused that perhaps some playoff series could be shortened to best of five. The Cavs

stand 19-46, the second-worst record in the league behind the Golden State Warriors (15-50), but are 5-6 since J.B. Bickerstaff was elevated from associ-ate head coach after coach John Beilein stepped down.

The NBA suspended the season with the conclusion of games on March 11.

“Obviously drastic times, drastic measures, but we would like to keep the same schedule, 82 games,” Love told Noah in regards to 2019-20. “I would see a situation where because guys might come in a little out of shape and don’t know how to get through this time, because it is new, they will then have like a two-week training camp, play 10 games, then it will go into some sort of a playoff scenario. I don’t know if they’ll play seven games or they’ll play a five-game series that we haven’t seen in a long time and then we’ll have the Finals.

“But I do think because we’ve had so many of these sports taken away from us that the ratings will be incredibly high and it will be, in basketball how it is, it will be anybody’s game, anybody’s championship. As a fan myself, that will be fun to watch.”

Asked how he has been handling the three-week layoff, Love said he was still getting up early, eating right, working out and walking his dog, while also keeping virtually close to “my pil-lars in my life.

“It’s been a different time to navigate for all of us.”
