Connectivity

1. Phones/faxes connect through analogue phone cards with FXS ports

2. Softphones or USB phones on laptops and WiFi phones connect through an integrated WiFi Access Point

3. PCs with softphones or USB phones connect through the LAN

12

Outbound Routing

Sophisticated call routing tables allow the lowest cost route to be pre-selected, e.g.

Via the Internet to branch offices in different countries to reduce cost

Via the existing telephone network for other international calls to guarantee call quality

Select carrier that provides the lowest cost for the destination called

Calls are connected to a specific service by dialing a prefix code that identifies the server

Different routes can be defined to provide continuity when services fail

Page 13: Copyright Critical Links S.A. 1998-2006 All Rights Reserved

13

Inbound Routing

ACD functions for distributing large volumes of calls:

Set up voice menus with graphical IVR editor

Define multiple queues from the menus and assign agents to queues

Define frequency of the “announce position” message

Define ring strategy, e.g. ring all, round robin, ring agent with fewest calls

Define max number of callers waiting in a queue

Assign priorities to queues Configure music on hold

Create rules for different time periods, e.g. for holiday cover

Direct Inward Dial (DID)

Page 14: Copyright Critical Links S.A. 1998-2006 All Rights Reserved

14

Continuity

Calls made through the edgeBOX can be connected using any available service provider:

Via an ISP over the Internet through one or more ITSPs Via the existing analogue or digital telephone networks For all calls, Telephone Number Mapping (ENUM) can

be used to search for a SIP registered numbers, if no number is found, PSTN is used instead

If either IP or PSTN network fails, calls are transparently routed via alternative network

Scenario #1: Standard

The IP PBX (edgeBOX) controls all IP phones (possibly from different manufacturers) and VoIP adapters (ATA)

Calls are routed to the operator using a VoIP connection.

No VoIP specific hardware required for edgeBOX. All connections are through IP.

VoIP Trunks can be configured with/without authentication.

Used by customers that want a new IP platform but want to use some of their existing analogue phones.

Page 20: Copyright Critical Links S.A. 1998-2006 All Rights Reserved

20

Scenario #2: Maintaining the old PBX

Used by customers that already have a TDM PBX and want to add VoIP users while maintaining the legacy PBX.

Calls are routed to the operator using a VoIP connection (from the IP-PBX);

The new IP Phones are handled by the IP-PBX (edgeBOX);

The existing phones are handled by the legacy PBX;

Calls for the non IP phones are routed to the legacy PBX using a TDM connection between it and the IP-PBX;

The customer migrates the users to the new platform, when it’s completed, the legacy PBX is removed.

Requires PRI/BRI modules on TDM PBX and PRI/BRI cards on edgeBOX for setting a trunk between the two.

21

Scenario #3: VoIP Concentrator

Calls are routed to the operator using a TDM connection from the legacy PBX;

The new IP Phones are handled by the IP-PBX (edgeBOX);

The existing phones are handled by the legacy PBX;

Calls for the IP phones are routed to the IP PBX using a TDM connection between the IP-PBX (edgeBOX) and the legacy PBX;

There is no VoIP to the operator. Requires PRI/BRI modules on TDM PBX and

PRI/BRI cards on edgeBOX for setting a trunk between the two.

BRI scenario: BRI cards on edgeBOX (allow 2 simultaneous calls per BRI).

PRI scenario: PRI cards on edgeBOX (allow 30 simultaneous calls per PRI).

Used by customers that already have a TDM PBX and want to add VoIP users, but need to have the legacy PBX as the gateway to the PSTN

Page 22: Copyright Critical Links S.A. 1998-2006 All Rights Reserved

22

Scenario #4: Without VoIP connection to PSTN

Calls are routed to the operator using a TDM connection to the IP PBX (edgeBOX);

The IP PBX controls all IP phones (possibly from different manufacturers) and VoIP adapters (ATA)

There is no VoIP to the operator. Requires PRI/BRI modules for

edgeBOX. BRI scenario: BRI cards on

edgeBOX (allow 2 simultaneous calls per BRI).

PRI scenario: PRI cards on edgeBOX (allow 30 simultaneous calls per PRI).

Used by customers that want an IP PBX, but don’t have an IP connection to their location.

23

Scenario #5: Standard VoIP with backup

PSTN

Used by customers that want an IP-PBX but want to keep a PSTN connection, e.g. for backup purposes or for alternate routing of calls. Requires PRI/BRI/FXO modules for

IP-PBX BRI scenario: BRI cards on edgeBOX

(allows 2 simultaneous backup calls for each BRI).

PRI scenario: PRI card on edgeBOX (allow 30 simultaneous backup calls for each PRI).

FXO scenario: card POTS-FXS/FXO on edgeBOX.
