Answer any two questions from the following 25×2 = 50
1. Show schematically the variation of deviation with wavelength in case of prism spectrometer and explain how to determine unknown wavelength from it.
2. Draw the necessary ray diagram to determine the wavelength of sodium light by
forming Newton’s rings. Write down the working formula explaining each term. Show the nature of variation of square of diameters of different rings with the ring numbers observed.
3. Write down the working formulae to determine the number of lines per
centimeter of a plane diffraction grating and hence to determine the wavelength of unknown line in the spectrum of a polychromatic source of light.

Answer any one question from the following 15×1 = 15
4. Show schematically how optical rotation angle varies with concentration of a sugar solution and describe how to find out the unknown concentration of the solution from the graph. Write down the expression for specific rotation.
5. State and explain Brewster’s law and Fresnel formulae for reflection of
electromagnetic wave. Describe briefly how to verify them with the help of a spectrometer, a prism and two polaroid sheets.
