Journal Week 3 – Case Study Site Visit
This picture shows that there is founda<on work in progress. It is a shallow founda<on. This is because the soil is rela<vely stable. With this system, the load is ver<cally transferred directly to the suppor<ng soil.
Oval Pavilion
The beams are used for construc<ng load bearing walls and the <mber would leave a paDern finish
This picture shows the layer under the floor, which is made of white concrete. As seen on site, there were also white tubes for electrical power. There are two layers of reinforcement because as the span of the concrete slab increase in width, extra reinforcement is needed with thick concrete.
Eastern Precint Student Centre (Link Between Buildings)
Poten<al Construc<on Constraints: Space of link cannot be bigger. This is because the buildings built next to it are constraining it. Links to other buildings: The concrete roof of this link is the link to other buildings. Construc<on type: This link required some complex construc<on of beams and columns. Can<levers are used too in building the roof. Structural Systems: Framed structure, Lateral stability taken into considera<on Materials: Steel, Glass, Wood, Steel Beams, Concrete floors
MSLE Building (Link Between Buildings)
Poten<al Construc<on Constraints: Space of link cannot be bigger. This is because the buildings built next to it are constraining it. Construc<on type: This link uses mass construc<on with the concept of compression. Structural Systems: Framed structure, Lateral stability taken into considera<on, can<levers used inside the building Materials: Concrete, bricks, hollow plaster walls, steel, glass
Poten<al construc<on constraints: Can only be built higher if any expansion is required. This is due to the buildings built next to it. Materials: steel, glass, concrete beams Construc<on type: Cladding is used on the walls of the building. Structural System: Steel frame, column
