HistoryWe should talk about the ecological history of the area as industrialization destroyed environmental zones. We could chronicle the stream courses using maps and pictures from the past areas. The progression from an open to a covered stream would be great. I would love to highlight the presence of “wild” animals throughout to tie into a later presentation of wildlife effects.

It will be important to highlight the grind house industries along the stream used to produce flour. Dams were also a large part of industry as hydrologic power helped in the millhouses. This is the

beginning of factory runoff polluting the stream.

Sewers of Philadelphia

Combined Sewer Separate Sewer

We should discuss how each sewer systems works then move into the pros and cons of each. We need to emphasize the need for change by video taping the build up of water in the streets during rainy days and sewer runoff into Cobbs Creek.

NOT ALONE

We are a leading city in the US, moving away from combined sewer systems, toward separate sewer systems all over the city

Page 7: Storyboard ENVS 255

Wildlife EffectsI never knew that a bald eagle

could survive in a city like Philadelphia. I don’t think a lot of others do either. My goal in

this section is to inform the public about all of the wildlife

they are missing out on because of pollution. I want to

interview the head of John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge

and get people involved in animal preservation.

GreenWorks Philadelphia

I think its important to emphasize what parts of the GreenWorks plan can and will be implemented in the Cobbs Creek area that will specifically help manage the storm water and watershed. We should describe the rain barrels, rain gardens, sidewalk planters with the underground storage capacity and especially porous pavement. We should interview people in neighboring communities who have experienced the benefits of implementing these elements into their everyday lives.

RestorationRestoration projects include

uncovering the streams around Cobbs Creek to allow for natural passage along tributaries to the

ocean. Replanting destroyed areas and abandoned lots will

help provide for green space for incoming species.

Measurements should be taken along the streams where pH

levels, dissolved oxygen levels and organism growth are

reaching pre-pollution times.
