Dear Guest:

Welcome to Indianapolis for USIndoor’s 18th Annual Facility Operators Conference and Tradeshow! Six years ago, the last time we held our Conference in Indianapolis, and it remains a fantastic city center for our event. With each passing year, a growing number of our members pass their 25th anniversaries in business. Yet, all is not the same, as industry change ever seems to challenge us with new, inventive ways to do business.

Perhaps most notably, it’s high tech advances that have taken center stage, from player registration to sponsorship, concessions to communications, risk management to business development. Consequently, best practices, programming, marketing and operations have taken on new meaning, and our conference curriculum reflects this trend.

True to our reason for being–recreation and fun–USIndoor’s annual conference is more than just classrooms, too. Where else can you reconnect with industry peers, recharge and leave inspired? So I’m pleased to report another great turnout by both new and old-comers, which is good news for all in terms of the mix of energy, intelligence and comraderie we get to share and experience. And you can take full advantage through activities like the Bus Tour, CAO Banquet and opening and closing socials. There may still time to sign up, if you’d like to ask any of our staff.

Veteran attendees will be pleased to see many first-time sponsors and exhibitors, too, in areas of video technology, payment processing, revenue programs, building construction, office systems, lighting, field maintenance and flooring. I think it’s a sign of good things ahead for USIndoor and our industry. Plus, I think we’ll learn a lot about what we thought we knew already.

You never know when or where the next inspiration will arise. Get involved from the start by setting your personal goals, challenge your assumptions and get into the conversation. Realize, too, that you’re amidst a lot of “Type As”. When you hear someone doing better than you, think first, “how can I learn from this and do better,” and resist the urge to explain away your differences. Listen, share, be open and lower your shield if you find you need to.

I look forward to meeting everyone here this week. Please join me in paying special thanks to our amazing line-up of speakers—many of whom are first-time presenters, almost all of whom are volunteers. Thanks, also, to our generous sponsors, exhibitors, the USIndoor Board and our new Meeting Director, Jennifer Mobley! I hope you’ll “show them the love” they deserve and consider taking a turn when we do it again in Milwaukee in May 2019!

Very truly yours,

Don ShaperoPresident

SPRING2018 13

The Monument Sports Group congratulates Don Shapero and USIndoor for passionately serving the needs of the Indoor

Sports Industry for 20 years.

Monument Sports is so proud to be a part of USIndoor's success and looks forward to another 20 years of managing the best

association sports program anywhere.

It was over 20 years ago that I met Don Shapero, and he explained to me his idea for the creation of an association that

would serve the needs of indoor soccer and sport facility owners, players, referees, and business partners. I remember

taking notes on a napkin at a restaurant after we went to a women’s pro indoor game at The Anaheim Pond. Said

Sanhoury was a referee, and remember meeting Tom Higginson of Lets Play, David Walsh of Bladium, Gordon Jago the

commissioner of the WISL, and many others. The energy of that night became a “thing”, and USIndoor was born. Our

insurance program became an integral part of pulling people from all over the country together, but most importantly

it acted as the jumping off point for meeting so many people that started as business associates, and have become

close friends. There are too many to name, but Said Sanhoury, Hank Aldrich, Jim Cline, Arnold Zirkes, Pete Spanos, Don

Crowe, Mike Weis, Jan Nordmo, Afrim Nezaj were there from the beginning. I can’t thank Don enough for providing the

platform that allowed so many of us to make this association a major part of our businesses. I also can’t think all the

board members, and others who have worked a lot of hours making USIndoor conventions a place where we can all get

together annually and lie to each other about our businesses!

So for me personally, and I’m sure many many others; THANK YOU DON! “1998 - 2018”
