CONCEPT TEACHINGChungalao, Doane AprilParan, Jordan GregTrinidad, GyneranetteWhat is conceptual approach? It is choosing and defining content of a certain discipline to be taught through the use of big and pervasive ideasIt is using the content as a means of leading the students to discover the laws and principles or generalizations that govern a particular subject or discipline

What is Concept Learning?Helps the learner:Understand specific conceptsUnderstand the nature of conceptsUtilize logical reasoning and higher level thinkingImprove Communication

AssadThe Ultimate goal in concept teaching is to enable students to categorize:

IdeasExperiencesObjects

Two ways of Concept PresentationDeductive method also referred to as expository method/ rule-to-example methodInductive method otherwise known as interrogatory method/example-to-rule methodDeductive method The teacher defines the concept for students and then provides them examples. Steps in deductive methodStatement of the problem- teacher tells what the problem is Generalization- recalling/ stating generalizations or rules which may help solve the problemInference- looking for the principle/ rule/ generalization that fits the problemVerification- trying out the best generalization

AdvantagesCove inning of the lessonShort and time savingUseful with childrenHelps in memorizationAdvantageous during practice and revision stageDisadvantagesLess involvement on the part of the learnersLesson appears uninteresting at firstacaiACTIVITY!Inductive methodExamples are given first and the students discover the concept themselves through the process of logical reasoning.

Steps in inductive methodPreparation- reviewing of old facts, setting of goals, stating of aimsPresentation- presentation of cases and examplesComparison & Abstraction- deducing common elements among the cases or samples presented

Steps (cont.)4. Statement- stating of generalization based on the common elements deduced from the case presented5. Application- applying the generalization/ rule learned to other problems within or beyond the classroom setting.

AdvantagesLearners are more engaged in the teaching-learning processLearning becomes more interestingIt helps the development of the learners higher order thinking skills (HOTS)This method fosters independence and self-confidence in the pupil DisadvantagesRequires more time and so less subject matter will be coveredIt demands expert facilitating skills on the part of the teacherassA comparison between deductive and inductive approachDeductiveInductiveMakes use of expository strategiesMakes use of exploratory strategiesAimed at mastery of knowledge and skillsAimed at generating knowledge for experienceTeacher- orientedLearner- orientedDirect transmission of information from teacherStudents search for information with teachers supervisionTeacher- controlledLearner- controlledHighly structuredFlexibly organizedContent- orientedExperience- orientedThank Y u!
