 CONTEXT

Côte d'Ivoire located in West Africa is the 1st world producer of COCOA, the primary fruit which enters 99%composition of chocolate and in several other goods like perfumes, pharmaceuticals, liquors……Cocoa represents for the country a vital sector with presence of 600.000 heads of exploitation ensuring 6.000.000(out of 16M) people to live and contributing to 10% of PIB.Since 2001, this vital sector has been confronted to a major trend: CHILD TRAFFICKING AND LABOUR in cocoaplants endangering importation of cocoa to key markets (USA - above 50%) and depriving economic subsistence of6.000.000 persons.Government of Cote d’Ivoire, cocoa private sector, international organizations and rural communities decided to jointheir efforts in tackling that issue by adoption of agreements like the multilateral cooperation agreement to combatchild trafficking in West Africa and implementation of fit initiatives: STCP; WACAP; WINROCK/CLASSE; ANADER;SSTE; LTTE-GTZ, LUTRENA; ICCO/Total Quality.

By July 2008, all those efforts will be reviewed and evaluate by International Community (UN-ILO) and USDOL (USDepartment of Labour)For Cote d’Ivoire, this means avoiding a probable embargo of importation of cocoa in US market by July 2008Vs. Certification of cocoa ‘produced without worst forms of child labour’

Time is NOW for AIESEC to CONTRIBUTE………………..how?
