Featured species include moose, black bear, spruce grouse, snowshoe hare, blackburnian warbler and red crossbill. Much of the compartment was in the Sleeper Lakes fire area and was burned through in 2007. Pine types on the ridges were charred and scorched in places and treed bogs and marshes were often burned through. As such, numerous burned snags exist providing excellent woodpecker habitat. The compartment is a mix of pine dominated ridges surrounded by treed bogs and marshes. Murphy creek runs through the compartment providing an excellent east-west wildlife travel corridor. Several lowland stands will be harvested with brush pile enhancements for snowshoe hare created and browse created for moose while protecting some cover for loafing areas. Seed trees, snags and den trees will be retained in any harvest. Wildlife species expected to use this compartment include white-tailed deer, moose, black bear, gray wolves and coyotes, otter, mink, fisher, and black-backed woodpeckers. Sand/gravel pits are not located in the area, and potential appears to be limited within the compartment. There is no known metallic mineral potential in this area, and there is no potential for economical production oil and gas in the UP. The state does not own the mineral rights beneath some of the compartment. Private mineral rights owners must be allowed reasonable access to the land should they choose to explore and/or develop the minerals. To maintain and improve forest health and diversity, while managing for wildlife, fisheries, recreational and environmental concerns and needs.

Most of the narrow ridges are on Rousseau fine sand. Other associated soils on slight ridges are: Rousseau-Dawson complex, Rousseau-Spot complex and Kinross-Au Gres complex. Dawson, Greenwood, and Loxley soils are prominent across the treed bog areas and the lowland conifer stands are on Carbondale, Lupton, and Tawas soils, and Kinross muck.

Primarily State lands, with isolated private 40’s. Larger private holdings are adjacent to the north.

The potential exists for several threatened and endangered species of flora and fauna within the compartment.

None noted.

This compartment contains part of an MNFI indentified muskeg. Follow the McMahon & Sleeper Lakes ERA Plan. M-123 is designated as Tahquamenon Scenic Heritage Route.

Fisheries Values: MinimalThe Murphy Creek system flows through this compartment. The only fisheries value will be as potential nursery or forage production. Standard BMP’s should apply along Murphy Creek and tributaries.

Compartment 82 lies in central Luce county and is in the Seney Sand Lake Plain ecological sub-subsection and lies in the Tahquamenon River Patterened Fen Management Area.

Additional Compartment Information:

M-123 cuts through a mile on the eastern edge of the compartment. The only other road access is off Williams Road (poor sand ridge road). While the State has easement across Fossitt Road, it does not touch State land.

If proposed timber sales progress, the west line against private (NESE Section 16) and the north line against private (SESW Section 16) would need to be run.

No facilities. Opportunities for hunting, fishing, blueberry and mushroom picking.

The compartment has potential for large fire runs as observed during the 2007 Sleeper Lake Fire because of the open marsh and Pine ridge types. Large marsh areas of the compartment may challenge suppression forces, normal suppression tactics may not be able to be used. Wheeled heavy equipment access is limited to Williams Road and some connecting ridges.

The majority of the compartment fell within the boundary of the Sleeper Lake Fire of August, 2007. Several research projects stemmed from the fire, but are not current at this time.

The following reports from the Inventory are attached: Total Acres by Cover Type and Age Class Cover Type by Harvest Method Proposed Treatments – No Limiting Factors Proposed Treatments – With Limiting Factors Stand Details (Forested and Nonforested) Dedicated and Proposed Special Conservation Areas Site Condition Details

The following information is displayed, where pertinent, on the attached compartment maps: Base feature information, stand boundaries, cover types, and numbers Proposed treatments Site condition boundaries Details on the road access system

SCA

Ecological Reference Areas (ERAs) are high quality examples of natural communities that have been identified as Element Occurrences (EOs) by the Michigan Natural Features Inventory (MNFI) within the context of their natural community classification system. Element Occurrences with viability ranks of A (Excellent) or B (Good) and a Global (G) or State (S) element (rarity) ranking of endangered (1), threatened (2), or rare (3) serve as an initial base of ERAs. They may be located upon any ownership in the State. The system is comprised of individual or associations of natural community types that are managed for restoration and maintenance of natural ecological processes and values. The public may submit recommendations for lands as ERAs using the DNR Conservation Area Recommendation Form.

21 42220 - Natural Jack Pine

Sapling Well 31.2 11 Immature OPIC - FMD: Ridges of jack pine, with occasional WP,RP. Slopes of 15-35%, on average, which will be inaccessible, in places. Access would be via the Williams Road, which will

require some major improvements for logging access. Stand falls within the Sleeper Lakes fire perimeter. *** As per 2010

compartment review, stand treatment has been delayed due to advanced reproduction as a result of fire - no salvage to take place. Nice JP regeneration with some areas of standing live

residual, mostly RP and WP, but occasional JP.

22 42220 - Natural Jack Pine

Sapling Well 29.8 11 Immature OPIC - FMD: Mixture of high and low ground; higher ground is more J,R - lower with W, S. Some areas with older, wolf-tree JP and smaller, younger JP intermixed - two-aged. Stand connects with C. 84 stand 125; should be treated together. Access will be via the William Road, which will need major road improvements

before logging occurs. Within Sleeper Lakes fire perimeter. ***As per 2010 compartment review, stand treatment has been delayed due to advanced reproduction as a result of fire - no

salvage to take place.Good JP regeneration, with some aspen and oak regen.

Includes some some standing JP and RP residual.

23 6126 - Lowland Jack Pine

Sapling Well 8.2 11 Immature OPIC - FMD: Stand contains both high and low ground. Connects with C. 84, stand 125 - should be treated together.

Access would be via the Williams Road, which will require major road improvements before harvesting occurs. Soils are

Rousseau/Dawson. 2000: stand 23 ***As per 2010 compartment review, stand treatment has been delayed due to advanced reproduction as a result of fire - no salvage to take

place.Pretty well all dead from Sleeper Lake Fire but with good JP

regeneration.

24 42220 - Natural Jack Pine

Sapling Well 7.7 11 Immature OPIC - FMD: Steep ridge of jack pine which includes the Williams Road. Many areas will be inaccessible. Major road

improvements would be necessary before logging occurs, due to the severe risk of soil erosion. Stand connects with C. 84, stand 123, and should be treated at the same time. Entire stand burnt

by Sleeper Lakes fire -regeneration started. 2000: stand 24 ***As per 2010 compartment review, stand treatment has been delayed due to advanced reproduction as a result of fire - no

need for salvage.Burned hard here, no residual alive. Excellent regeneration

though.

11.1 66 Unspecified OPIC - FMD: Mixed of high and low ground. Occasional PB, cedar, tamarack. Old trail road within. Very little fire effect here.

38 6126 - Lowland Jack Pine

Sapling Well 20.7 11 Immature OPIC - FMD: grasses; burnt spruce, jack pine.Bog with good JP regeneration ~10-15'tall, from Sleeper Lake

Fire.

39 42220 - Natural Jack Pine

Sapling Well 50.3 11 Unspecified OPIC - FMD: This stand was prescribed last entry by the stand examiner but requested by wildlife division that it not be harvest due to concerns of potential damage occuring to the ridges by

the logging operation. Most of this ridge was burnt heavily by the Sleeper Lakes fire - anywhere from bottom char only to 3/4 - all

dead. Mix of areas of dead JP snags with excellent JP regeneration, along with areas of J4/J5 areas 8" dbh JP with fully stocked JP

regen underneath. Too difficult to access just areas of live residual. Some scattered RP residual. Some ridges too steep for

harvesting.

41 42220 - Natural Jack Pine

Sapling Well 8.8 11 Immature OPIC - FMD: Sale #004-82A. Primarily dead stand now, due to Sleeper Lakes fire.

East fingers are purely regeneration; main finger from the south still has some live JP, mainly on the edges, 6-8" dbh, but lots of

JP regen on ridges (~10-15'+ tall, fully stocked)

42 6126 - Lowland Jack Pine

Sapling Medium

204.8 11 Immature OPIC - FMD: Burnt spruce, jack pine. Grasses, leatherleaf. 2000: stand 37

JP regen (10-15' tall), many open spots, but some areas of decent regeneration. Non-commercial bog.

43 42220 - Natural Jack Pine

Sapling Well 6.9 35 Immature OPIC - FMD: Sale #004-82A. Part of Sleeper Lakes fire.Eastern finger more affected by the fire and is regenerating with

jack pine. This finger contains the old roadbed for M-123.

44 6120 - Lowland Cedar Poletimber Well

231.1 80 Unspecified OPIC - FMD: Some paper birch, white pine and tamarack within. Difficult access due to numerous drainages and seeps. Cut in the '30's. 1939 photo's show cutting in the area. Some eastern portions may have some more upland-like areas with jack pine

and spruce similar to stand 53.

49 6122 - Black Spruce Poletimber Well

16.2 80 Unspecified OPIC - FMD: Nice stand of flagpole spruce (40 - 60' hts and 4-7" dbh) with other areas of S/W/J mix. WP average dbh = 8-14".

Some cedar, tamarack within. Occasional slight ridges.

50 6117 - Lowland Deciduous, Mixed

Coniferous

Poletimber Medium

8.9 84 Unspecified OPIC - FMD: Mixed softwood includes spruce, cedar, WP and tamarack. Low, wet stand. Much of A/Ab has died out or is

dying. Very variable.

51 429 - Mixed Upland Conifers

Sawtimber Medium

4.1 81 51-80 OPIC - FMD: Mixed softwood includes WP,BF. Old hwy route along east boundary of stand. Will be difficult to treat, due to

hwy access issues.

53 429 - Mixed Upland Conifers

Sawtimber Medium

13.2 81 51-80 OPIC - FMD: Stand was primarily clearcut in the 1930's (evidenced on the '39 photos); some larger WP and cedar were left. Large diameter cedar is along the low edge - flowing water within. Leave small buffer, as there is definitely a topography

difference. Weeviled, large diameter WP (20" +) with S/F of all size classes within. Large WSp (12"+) should be harvested with

the amount of S/F present. A few PB noted. 2000: stand 50 **5/19/10- After further field examination of the stand is was

determined that the stand is too small, too wet and needs too many buffers to make it worth will to prepare for a timber sale.

South half a bit higher ground than north half. South half - JP/Fs/S gradiating to S/WP to the north. JP on very north end

too. Drainage on west side of stand.

54 6125 - Lowland Black Spruce, Jack Pine

Poletimber Well

37.3 80 Unspecified OPIC - FMD: Stand was primarily clearcut in the 1930's (evidenced on the '39 photos); some larger WP and cedar were left. Large diameter cedar is along the low edge - flowing water within. Leave small buffer, as there is definitely a topography

56 42220 - Natural Jack Pine

Sawtimber Well

16.2 81 Unspecified OPIC - FMD: Mix of J/S primarily - F/S regen of all heights and diameters; some large weeviled WP, RP, and large cedar at NW

tip of stand - leave. Cedar regeneration along road and stand edges; should be able to cut some cedar pulp within, if need be.

Small low type bisects stand E-W; may create harvesting difficulties without winter cut. Small PB, RM, A along M-123 -

might be possible to leave unless this creates access problems; cut larger pulp. Two-track(old hwy) trail road (and associated timber) was burnt during the Sleeper Lakes Fire of 2007 - may

not be worth salvaging. Regeneration work will need to be evaluated further whenever harvest occurs. MO2= Q Ridge

of JP along bog edge (southern boundary). E-W drainage inclusion (L type).

57 6120 - Lowland Cedar Poletimber Well

38.7 80 Unspecified OPIC - FMD: Stand clearcut in the 1930's. All sizes of cedar within, from 20-40' heights. No browse noted. 91= T,PB,RM.

Mainly small pole size cedar, but some small logs present.

60 6126 - Lowland Jack Pine

14.2 53 Unspecified OPIC - FMD: Spruce, jack pine.

61 6122 - Black Spruce Poletimber Medium

9.0 65 Unspecified OPIC - FMD: Small straggling stand within bog. Some PB, tamarack present.

May be low ridge in places.
