Lynn Grieve,Customer Care and Training ManagerBorder Cars

“Just a small note to say thank you again for all the work done to run the very successful course last Friday. I have discussed it with a number of the participants, and they were all very complimentary of the course outline. It is very difficult to structure a course to meet everyone’s requirements due to different levels of exertise but somehow you managed to keep everyone interested.

Once again, thank you for the effort put in and the enthusiasm on the day”

“Qualifications to meet the SSSC requirements? - The size of the task was huge; the commitment by the organisation was in place, however, how do we get there when there is so much to be done?

With the tireless help of Dumfries and Galloway College and their Assessors we were supported in every way to tackle what seemed like an impossible task. Now we see a large number of staff who are fully qualified and have felt well supported by the College and valued by an organisation which is committed to training and development.”

David Currie, Training OfficerCarevisions.

“We are very happy with the high standard of support and technical expertise displayed to our staff by the SVQ Team who visit Thorney Croft. I would have no hesitation in recommending the team to others.”

Vocational Awards

21 | Company Training Solutions

The Assessor and Verifier Awards

These are the nationally recognised qualifications for those responsible for assessment and verification of competency based qualifications that are assessed in the workplace, such as vocational qualifications (VQs).

They are individual units taken from the SQA Learning and Development Level 3 Vocational Qualification.

They are competency based and require a portfolio of evidence to be developed to demonstrate an understanding and ability to carry out the role of assessor or verifier.

To become an Assessor or Internal Verifier the organisation must either be approved to offer Vocational Qualifications or work with a training provider.

If the organisation works with a training provider then the new assessor or internal verifier must be approved via their internal quality systems.

A1 - Assess Candidates Using a Range of Methods

This qualification is appropriate for those that are involved in:

• Developing plans for assessment with the candidates

• Assessing candidates against national standards of competence using a range of assessment methods

• Giving candidates feedback on the assessment decisions

• Recording assessment decisions

• Contributing to the internal quality systems

The minimum requirements for the A1 is that the assessor has 2 different candidates that are working on a nationally recognised qualification to assess.

A2 - Assess Candidates’ Performance through Observation

This qualification is appropriate for those that are involved in:

• Agreeing and reviewing assessment plans with candidates

• Assessing performance against national standards

• Assessing knowledge against national standards

• Making assessment decisions and providing feedback

The minimum requirements for the A2 is that the assessor has 2 different candidates that are working on a nationally recognised qualification to assess.

V1 – Conduct Internal Quality Assurance of the Assessment Process

This qualification is appropriate for those that are involved in:

Modern Apprenticeships, are accredited training at level 2 (in some disciplines) and level 3. They allow young people to train to craft level and above whilst working.

Skillseekers: a training programme that takes young people to a VQ Level 2 (where there is not yet a recognised Modern Apprenticeship or level 2) from where they can if appropriate progress to NQ Level 3 Modern Apprenticeship.

Every employer wants to know that they are recruiting highly capable, motivated people and with the Modern Apprenticeship framework you have the added benefit of high quality training to industry requirements. More and more companies see training and development of their staff as an investment in the future rather than a luxury or sometimes a legal requirement. Vocational Qualifications (VQs) can form an integral part of a Business Development Strategy as they provide a focused on-the-job context for staff training and development.

Have you thought about training your staff through Vocational Qualifications?

VQs are based on nationally recognised standards of performance that have been developed by representatives from industry and education. Matching skills and knowledge against these standards provides a good indication of where training may be required. Also, because they are assessed in the workplace there is little disruption to normal activities.

Each VQ is made up of units, some of which are mandatory and some are optional. The choice within the optional range gives each VQ the flexibility to ensure that it is relevant for both the individual and employer.

There are five different levels of VQs so there will always be a level to suit the skills and experience of staff, whether new or experienced.

Why Vocational Qualifications?ualifications?

• To allow staff to demonstrate that they can do their job well• To develop staff confidence • To motivate and develop ambition in staff• To increase commitment to the company• They provide the flexibility to ensure all training and

assessment is relevant to the individual’s current position in the workplace

Why would staff want to do a Vocational Qualification?

• Because they have lots of experience and no formal way to prove it

• To take part in an industry and government recognised qualification

• They may have an academic qualification and would like to complement it with a qualification that demonstrates practical vocational skills

• For a new member of staff it can be used as a tool to assist in

Vocational Qualifications

identifying their skills gap and the development of a training plan• To adhere to legal requirements, such as Scottish Social Services

Council (SSSC) requirements

Assessment

A qualified assessor will conduct the assessment of the VQ in the workplace. There will be no requirements to sit exams /tests.
