QUICK FACTS

76

Page 8: Enterprise training solutions

Courses are practical and focus on the skills and knowledge required for people to enter a profession and perform at an efficient and effective level.

Organisations are increasingly looking towards vocational education and training in favor of university education, as vocational training provides participants with more practical and relevant skills rather than theoretical knowledge which are often only loosely related to their job role.

The growing need for training Training is critically important for organisational development and success. Training enables companies to become more efficient, productive, service enabled and to stay ahead of their competition, whilst also making employees feel more valued and secure in their job.

In today’s highly competitive and global business climate, companies looking to improve their profit margins and increase productivity need to find effective ways to boost employee performance. Vocational education and training can deliver significant improvements to a number business areas which are directly impacted by employee skills and knowledge, including:

●● Increased productivity and performance improvement

●● Stricter adherence to corporate policies

●● Improved customer satisfaction

●● Increased employee morale and retention

●● Increased revenue

Vocational education and training is a system of education and training which has been designed around specific industries and job roles.

trainingTHE VALUE OF

98

Page 9: Enterprise training solutions

The high cost of not trainingSome organisations view training as an unnecessary expense, when in reality the investment in training is often much smaller than the cost of failing to adequately maintain staff or deliver vital project and services. Cost categories may include:

●● Increased down time

●● Co-worker distraction

●● Rework

●● IT/help desk support

Training also affects employee retention. According to the American Society for Training & Development, 41% of employees at companies with inadequate training programs plan to leave within a year versus 12% of employees at companies who provide excellent training and professional development programs.

1 The Internal Rate of Return (IRR) is +24% for training companies and -7% for non-training companies.

2 Vocationally trained workers are typically 6-11% more productive than academically educated workers.

3 Every $1 spent on training can yield as much as $30 in productivity gains over 3 years.

4 In many industries there is a 40% productivity gap between high and low performing employees.

5 Most companies commit less than 1% of total employment hours to training activities.

6 A doubled investment in training can result in growth rates in excess of 300% of the industry average.

7 Strategic and ongoing investment in training can reduce:

●● Staff turnover by 25-75%

●● Time-to-hire by 50-75%

●● Cost-to-hire by 70%

INDUSTRY

SNAPSHOT

Employment of electricians is projected to grow 23 percent from 2010 to 2020, which is faster than the average for all occupations. Homes and businesses require more wiring than ever before, and electricians will be needed to install the necessary components and meet this demand.

Not only will the Electrical sector need to train a significant volume of new workers, but many existing workers will need to improve their skills to better service the public’s growing appetite for efficient energy. These efficiencies will be realized through skills enhancements in:

●● 20 % from better insulation, lighting, and similar energy efficiency measures in our homes, offices, factories, and other commercial buildings

●● 20-30% from energy-efficient new buildings mainly based on the average energy consumption of existing buildings in developed countries.

●● Lighting accounts for 19 percent of the world’s electricity consumption and is expected to grow with 40% in the next 10 years. In the commercial sector, lighting accounts for 1/3 of a building’s electricity use.

The acute skills shortage seen in Australia and Canada has begun to spread around the world, with major projects in Indonesia, Mongolia, Brazil, Chile, Peru and Mozambique all plagued by critical skills shortages in Engineering related trades.

This issue is compounded by the fact that 25% of workers in Engineering related trades are older than 55 and 50% of workers are older than 45. This means that much of the existing workforce is likely to enter non-trade roles or retire in the coming decade.

It is currently projected that the United States will need an additional 238,000 welding-related professionals by 2019.

INDUSTRY

SNAPSHOT

The Healthcare and Community Services sectors globally represent more than 10% of GDP in OECD countries and this is expected to grow to above 15% by 2040. The United States of America spend almost 16% of their GDP on healthcare today, and if historical trends continue this could be nearly a quarter of their GDP in 2040.

Despite experiencing a current nurse shortage, America reports a ratio of 773 nurses to 100,000 population. This is a stark contrast to Uganda, for example, who report a ratio of approximately 6 nurses per 100,000 population. Clearly, the issue of defining, measuring and addressing nursing shortages has to take into account the huge disparity in the current availability of nursing skills in different countries, sectors and regions.

Furthermore, the lack of access to healthcare in many countries is likely to encourage a growing number of established pharmaceutical, healthcare and medical technology companies to open clinics in the developing world.

There are significant efficiencies which can be realized in the Healthcare and Community Services sectors through better training and education. For example:

●● Hospital and Health Information Systems are currently experiencing a period of significant change, which will require further training and education for many workers. For example, the implementation of bedside scanning, traceable medical devices, inventory management systems, receipt authentication and transaction automation.

●● Millions of patients are at risk for adverse drug affects. Every year between $160-280 billion are

The global travel and tourism market accounts for 5% of global GDP and 6% of all exports, with the industry employing one in twelve people globally. Within the food category, dining out is expected to grow by 10.2% every year for the coming decade.

●● There are 8 million restaurants in the world and around 300,000 restaurant and catering companies.

●● The global restaurant industry will reach $2.1 trillion by 2015, driven by increasing preference for eating out and waning demand for take away foods.

●● Over the last decade there has been increased focus on the quality of food served in fast food restaurants.

Average staff turnover in the hospitality industry is steady at around 31%. INDUSTRY

SNAPSHOT

The way that consumers make purchasing decisions has changed dramatically over the past decade. Today many consumers will stand in retail stores, using their smart phones to compare prices and product reviews, and allowing their family and friends instantly weigh in on shopping decisions via social media.

Existing retailers cannot expect to stay successful by going about business as usual. Modern retailers need to provide value to customers in new and different ways; such as through the provision of product expertise, product education, and the provision of genuine customer service.

●● Global retail sales are growing steadily at around 4%

●● Today annual global retail sales are worth US $18 Trillion

Building Solid Platforms for EducationMany developing countries doubled their GDP per capita in the last 15 years, meaning they are experiencing economic growth roughly ten times faster than the industrial revolution. This means they have a real need to address vocational training differently than western countries that have been developing over a much longer time. Even established markets, however, have expectations of progressive vocational education and training such as:

●● Consolidation and streamlining processes—namely, integrating all training functions into a single and more efficient reporting structure.

●● Offload some or all of administration duties from employees by outsourcing these tasks to qualified training services suppliers that specialize in the range of processes entailed in enterprise-wide training programs.

●● It’s virtually impossible to shave costs and simultaneously increase training efficiency without having the proper metrics and reporting structure in place to determine where and how effectively money is being spent, continuously measure and monitor all facets of their training to ensure maximum return on investment and proper alignment with their company’s business strategies.

●● To capture future growth and to help our clients to secure profit from an increasingly complex cost pressured and shifting industry landscape, we recognize that we cannot simply rely on traditional educational toolboxes.

Careers Australia has developed an industry leading model for the rollout of corporate and customized training services.

1 ConsultationWe value the extensive experience and valuable insight from the delivery of wide ranging projects across a broad cross section of industries and clients. We take time to ask the right questions, listening carefully, and prepare strategic recommendations. We also want to make sure we understand our clients business profoundly so that we can identify and implement the right solution.

2 ScopeOur project team will work with you to establish a clear project scope, which could include the delivery of hundreds of existing courses and qualifications, or the development and delivery of completely customized training solutions to meet specific skills needs.

3 PlanningThe planning phase is based around the definition of course and delivery specifications, aims and outcome measurements. Once the specification is defined, learning objectives and detailed course curriculums are developed, appropriately skilled and experienced lecturers are appointed and support mechanisms are defined.

We evaluate opportunities to leverage on modern learning technology and blended training delivery

methodologies, rather than relying on traditional and often inefficient classroom delivery. Our clear focus is on the provision of highly efficient and effective training to provide your organization with genuine value.

4 ImplementationWe deliver our training solutions and services pragmatically and in alignment with your key stakeholders to assure that we can make any necessary adjustments along the way.

5 ReviewSome examples important to measure for continues improvement and to impact reasons

●● The correlation between sales training and sales performance

●● The correlation between training and productivity and efficiency

●● The percentage of training budget spend on course development and delivery

●● How training is compared to others

●● The cost of a canceled class

●● The total cost of training technology and training administration

AUSTRALIAN QUALIFICATIONS FRAMEWORKCareers Australia courses and qualifications are nationally recognized and internationally transferrable under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

The AQF provides a comprehensive, nationally consistent framework for all qualifications in post-compulsory education and training in Australia. In the vocational education and training sector it assists national consistency for all trainees, learners, employers and providers by enabling national recognition of qualifications and Statements of Attainment.

AUSTRALIAN SKILLS QUALITY AUTHORITYCareers Australia courses and qualifications are accredited and audited by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA).

ASQA is the national regulator for Australia’s vocational education and training sector with a mandate to ensure nationally approved quality standards are met.

AUSTRALIAN STUDENT TUITION ASSURANCE SCHEMECareers Australia offers Australian Student Tuition Assurance (ASTAS) to protect the upfront fees paid by Australian students or foreign students studying in Australia. ASTAS ensures that any Australian student displaced from a course, due to our inability to continue the course, will be relocated efficiently and with minimal disruption to a comparable course with another approved provider.

AUSTRALIAN NURSING & MIDWIFERY ACCREDITATION COUNCILCareers Australia’s Diploma of Nursing course is accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC), who is Australia’s independent accrediting authority for nursing and midwifery under the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme.

Quality education assures the community that nurses and midwives who complete programs we accredit can practice, become registered and care for people in a safe and competent manner.

glossary APPRENTICESHIP / TRAINEESHIPA structured training arrangement for a person employed under an Apprenticeship / Traineeship training contract. It usually involves the person receiving training gradually and being assessed both on and off the job over a number of years.

COURSEA Course is a complete body of prescribed studies constituting a curriculum, which results in the issuing of a Qualification or Statement of Attainment. We have simplified the way courses are described in this document, for people who are unfamiliar with the Australian Qualifications Framework.

SHORT COURSEShort Courses typically only contain one or two Units of Competency to deliver highly specific and granular skills or knowledge. These can be delivered in a few hours or over a number of days.

FOUNDATION COURSEFoundation Courses equip participants with basic functional skills and knowledge to commence entry level roles. Under the Australian Qualifications Framework these courses are described as Certificate I or Certificate II.

INTERMEDIATE COURSEIntermediate Courses equip participants with theoretical and practical knowledge suitable for skilled roles. Under the Australian Qualifications Framework these courses are described as Certificate III or Certificate IV which include Trade and Traineeships.

ADVANCED COURSEAdvanced Courses equip participants with specialised knowledge and skills for highly skilled or paraprofessional roles and further academic focused learning. Under the Australian Qualifications Framework these courses are described as Diploma or Advanced Diploma.

QUALIFICATIONA Qualification is the result of an accredited complete program of learning that leads to formal certification.

STATEMENT OF ATTAINMENTA Statement of Attainment provides a complete record of Units of Competency that have been undertaken by a student, which includes the final result for each respective unit.

UNIT OF COMPETENCYA Unit of Competency is a single component of a qualification, or a stand-alone unit, that has been accredited by the same process as for a whole Course. A Unit of Competency will often be referred to by other names, such as an ‘accredited unit’, ‘module’, ‘subject’, or ‘unit’.
