I am looking for like-minded people in Manchester to set up a group that gets together for fun, chat and repairs! Through collaborating, sharing skills and learning new things, we will have a go at taking apart and putting back together mobile phones, cameras, printers, irons...anything you can think of. Through this we can learn about how things are designed,

come up with ideas on how to improve product recycling and reuse and, who knows, maybe even bring a few old products back to life, save a few much-needed pennies, and perhaps have some fun!This is an important element of Manchester’s climate change strategy (Manchester: A Certain Future). In the 2013 update, it says:

“In 2013–2015, we also need to explore the development of Manchester’s ‘thrift economy’ – growth in local reuse and repair activity and an increase in the service-based economy, with more organisations set up to seize the opportunity to repair and recycle goods that just a few years ago would have been sent to landfill.”By taking things apart, learning about how they are designed in the first place and trying to repair them, we can improve our own skills and get a better understanding of what companies need to do to move towards a more sustainable, less disposable economy. We can also empower ourselves as consumers. B ased on a Russian fairy tale of the same name this haunting novel has become a

best seller.

He decides to undertake an epic walk in order, he believes, to save a life. What makes this more remarkable is that Harold has barely left his home town for the past 20 years and he’s only wearing yacht shoes!

Along the way Harold experiences the best

and the worst of human nature. It’s an interesting twist that he’s more surprised by the kindness he receives than the abuse and objects thrown at him on the roadside. Walking for personal reasons he finds people wanting to unburden themselves to him and

begins to get weighed down with their problems. Left behind is Harold’s wife whose immediate reaction is to get him sectioned! As time goes on she begins to understand why this walk is so important to them both. This is a wonderfully told tale, almost a modern day “Pilgrim’s Progress”. The reader is aware however of a dark undercurrent which as with any good story only reveals

itself at the very end. If you enjoy this you might also enjoy “The Hundred-Year Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared”

It was the area just beyond the Four Banks down towards the Library. In the early 19th century it had its own pub, one posh house, a few farms and some cottages.

And it is a good spot to begin to reflect on Chorlton’s past, present and future. Back in the 1840s Martledge was home to about a hundred people, which was roughly 17% of the total population of our township.

The biggest house was Oak Bank home to a wealthy family which stood on a triangle of land between Barlow Moor Road, Wilbraham Road and Corkland Road.

Beyond Oak Bank were a collection of meaner dwellings, including a block of brick houses on the site of the Royal Oak pub, some wattle and daub cottages and a couple of farm houses.

And out in all directions were the fields and orchards that provided the means by which most of our people made a living.

The area was bordered to the south by the Rough Leech Gutter and to the north by the Black Brook and the Longford Brook. All three have now been hidden and all but forgotten which makes them a good starting point to explore present day Chorlton.

These brooks along with the fields and farms vanished as we underwent our own housing boom from the late 1870s through to the early 1930s and Martledge was the first to feel the impact of this development.

It had begun with the coming of mains water in 1864, followed by a system of sanitation a decade later and then by a gas supply and the railway in 1880. All of this provided the sound infrastructure which made Chorlton an attractive place to live. We were within easy reach of the city and yet were still surrounded by open countryside.

The two main landlords who were the Egerton and Lloyd estates began selling off parcels of land to speculative builders from the late 1870s but the development really took off during the next decade and continued on into the years after the Great War.

And it was Martledge which

was the first to go, so I guess it is not surprising that the name and its rural nature disappeared so completely.

Here were built not the grand houses with large gardens that can still be found on Edge Lane, but those solid rows of semi detached and terraced properties on all the roads from Albany to Corkland and across past the four banks down Wilbraham and Barlow Moor Road. These were to be the homes of the professionals, the middle managers and aspiring clerical classes.

township gaining the name New Chorlton to distinguish it from Old Chorlton which was the area around the green which continued to be more rural. New Chorlton had the salaried families and so that was where the banks were, Old Chorlton had only a post office and a Penny Savings Bank which was open for business once a week in the school on the green.

Of course there were plenty of more modest properties, which the Manchester Evening News called the six shillings a week homes. These consisted of two-up two-down properties and were mainly situated in old Chorlton.

But the core of the new development was Martledge, and in its time it must have seemed at the cutting edge. It boasted some fine shops, was

where our public library was built and was the first place to be connected to Manchester Corporation’s tram network.

And yet by the 1950s and 60s parts of it were not at their best. Some of the properties were converted into multi occupancy by landlords whose interest in bed sitter land did not always extend to maintaining the buildings. The railway station closed, along with the Gaumont cinema and some of the finer buildings on Manchester Road and Barlow Moor Road were demolished to make way for the precinct.

All rather grim, but Martledge has survived. Many of those bedsit properties have been returned to family homes, or benefited from a more sympathetic conversion into modern flats. There are a

growing number of interesting shops in the area, and the station has been reopened.

So it is pretty much a good place to see what we were, what we became and what we might yet become.

Chorlton Refurb was formed in 2010 by a group of local householders who wanted to find ways to keep toasty without having to pay the earth (in more ways than one). The group has done research into typical Chorlton homes and their energy performance with a grant from the LEAF (Local Energy Assessment Fund). The idea is to give residents an idea of the types of problems their kind of house is likely to exhibit and the ways they can be resolved. We have also put together several leaflets to help householders take the first steps. You can find all the leaflets and household reports on the Chorlton Refurb website

(www.chorltonrefurb.net) along with other useful info. We’re now planning a course to give people the knowledge needed to improve their homes. We’ll also maintain a presence at Chorlton Green and other Festivals and occasional stalls at Unicorn, etc...

When people ask what they can do to make things better we try to provide a range of options. There are some things that can be done fairly easily and/or cheaply that will have an immediate effect and don’t require a lot of disruption. This includes such actions as replacing light bulbs with low-energy equivalents, filling

gaps that let in draughts (and suck heat out), and blocking unused chimneys with special balloons. There are other actions that probably require a contractor and significant building

work. These might include adding insulation to solid walls, improving windows with double or triple glazing and putting insulation under the ground floor. Some things are relatively cheap and easy to do; others are more costly but can gain you greater benefits.

Later in the year we’ll we’ll be running a course in Chorlton, to expand on these ideas and provide practical help and skills. While the above is just one simple example of the kind of support we can provide, we are also offering to give presentations to any local community groups who are interested in these ideas. Our goal is to bring as many homes in the area up to as good a level of efficiency as we can, saving the households money on bills and helping to reduce our carbon dioxide emissions as well.

W ell, with March going down as the coldest in 50 years I hope you didn’t suffer too much with the chill, but how much did it cost to keep warm? Did

you keep an eye on the gas and electricity meters or was it all too terrible to watch them whizzing round. Are you interested in making your home more energy efficient – that is, losing less heat to the outside and keeping cosy inside?

Those of you following the recent ‘good life’ trend of having urban chickens will be pleased to learn that it is also International Respect for Chickens month (although coverage has been poultry). Jobs that need doing this month include

pruning of spring flowering shrubs including common specimens: Forsythia, Ribes, Spirea, winter flowering Jasmine, Pyracantha, Kerria and evergreen Ceonothus.

If you are clipping back ivy this month particularly from trees, be careful to check for nesting birds. You can also prune some clematis - referred to as ‘group one’ in horticultural texts. The pruning of clematis seems to be a bit baffling so here are a few tips. Group one refers to all the varieties

that flower early on shoots developed in the

previous season. These include the popular C.alpina, C.cirrhosa and C.armandii – if you don’t know their names go

with when they flower and in this

case they already

have.

Group two refers to the large flowered cultivars that flower May-June and should already have been pruned in late winter - February ideally (so do it next year if you’ve forgotten). C. florida are part of this group if you’ve still got the label.

The final group are late summer flowering (e.g. C. viticella) and grow from the base each year so can be hard pruned again around February time. Clematis, like so many other species, can be prone to wilt so keep an eye out for badly browned leaves and stunted growth and remove all infected areas.

You could also try some of the herbaceous types of clematis that tend to be resistant to the fungus. These look great in any border, are reliable and easy to prune in late winter. Some varieties to try are: C. recta ‘Purpurea’; C. integrifolia ‘Alba’; C. jackmanii; C. tubulosa ‘Wyevale’

FREE DRINK when buying a two course Beagle Deal


Visiting The Beagle on a Friday night, my companion and I found a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere with a bar area offering comfortable seating in a contemporary setting. After ordering a drink (we took our time as The Beagle is not only reputed for its varied locally brewed and imported ales, but also its extensive and expertly sourced wines) we moved to the dining area, where we were

presented with an inspired and ambitious menu.

As we waited for our starters, we were served an appetiser that set the precedent for the evening: freshly baked cumin bread, with pots of beef dripping for myself and

balsamic and sesame oil dips for my vegetarian companion.

The Beagle has a menu I look forward to revisiting, although

I was confident with my choice of starter - an intensely satisfying stringy salt beef Stovet that simply fell apart beneath a fresh duck egg over a creamy, light mustard sauce. My culinary cohort, meanwhile, opted for goats cheese Roulade with vegetarian black pudding and pumpkin seeds, with pieces of grape balancing the strength of the rich, flavoursome cheese.

Before long our mains arrived, and I found myself gazing at an 8oz sirloin steak (coated in bone marrow sauce - a meat-eaters dream) sitting next to a generous pile of thick, crispy chips; whilst my friend tucked into sweet potato and “smoky beagle beans” with thinly diced shallots in a blue cheese sauce.

We rounded off our evening sharing a hearty portion of hot apple pie with vanilla custard, and a treacle tart with lemon jelly and a stunningly innovative Earl Grey ice cream - another highlight of the evening.

The team behind Chorlton Arts Festival is pleased to reveal this year’s exciting programme of events and exhibitions, and tickets are now on sale via the Festival website. Chorlton Arts Festival takes place in the Manchester suburbs over 10 days, from 17 to 26 May. The full programme is now available online and the brochure will be distributed from Friday 19 April.

Featuring over 100 items, the programme is split into the categories of music, performance (comedy, theatre and spoken word), art/craft and special events. The Festival’s music extravaganza, the Chorlton Weekender, is back for a second year and will take place over Bank Holiday weekend (23–26 May), with local musicians taking to the various stages as well as internationally acclaimed

talent, including TOY, The Candle Thieves and Viv Albertine of The Slits.

Now in its 13th year, Chorlton Arts Festival will launch on Friday 17 May with a special evening in St Ninian’s Church featuring John Bramwell of I Am Kloot, nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2010 and achieving overwhelming success with their latest album, Let It All In. John will be in conversation with journalist, author and DJ Dave Haslam, and an interesting event packed with anecdotes is guaranteed.

Other highlights of this year’s Festival include outdoor performance As The Sun Goes Down, which takes place in Chorlton Park 23–25 May, and the installation Once Upon A Time, in Chorlton Library throughout the Festival. The

ever-popular art and craft fair takes place on Saturday 18 May in St Clement’s Church, while new this year is a zine/print fair running during the Weekender. Building on the successes of 2011’s this way:UP and 2012’s Digital Arts Collective, Chorlton On Chorlton is a project collecting together film footage of the area and projecting the images onto buildings. Also back for a third year is the FlashTag writing collective’s short-short story competition, with winners revealed at an event on Wednesday 22 May.

Festival Director Ella Byford said: “We’re very excited to be presenting such a diverse range of exhibitions and events, celebrating and showcasing local talent alongside bringing international artists and musicians to Chorlton. We hope there is something for everyone over the 10 days of the festival and are delighted to be able to provide over half of the events free of charge.”

How long have you worked at JP & Brimelow?I’m currently in my 8th year

Describe your job role.Day to day running off the office i.e arrange & conduct viewings, vendor contacts, measure up of all properties by adding the floor plans, photos and then putting everything together for the sales marketing brochure. I work closely with the other JP & Brimelow Sales offices in Didsbury and Withington getting to know clients requirements and helping them find their dream home. We work as a very close knit team.

What’s special about Chorlton as a place?I love the array of little independent boutiques and unique shops available in Chorlton and Chorlton Green, Beech Road is great and I’ll always see present or past clients around

along with lots of our purple boards! There is a real variety of people that I meet on a daily basis and its great to direct certain clients to area’s that you feel they’d like if they are new to the Chorlton and Whalley Range area. I love going for a walk around either Chorlton Water Park or the Nature Reserve just off Ivygreen Road, it’s a little hidden gem where you can relax and clear you’re head.

Where’s your favourite restaurant or café in Chorlton for a lunch time meal?Well there is so many to choose from here in Chorlton. I love Chorlton Eatery’s club sandwiches for a lunch time snack or the Olive & Thyme bread is so amazing for a starter. However The Lead Station on Beech Road is my favourite out of the all of the restaurants in Chorlton.

What are your hobbies and interests out of the wonderful world of JP & Brimelow?I love spending time with my family and friends and I really enjoy cooking and reading as a way off relaxing, I find them both therapeutic. I spend some time at my daughters pub in Edale as a little escape for the weekend with great walks, food and a cheekie glass of vino J :)

But Chorlton Golf Club must be one of a very small minority of clubs in the region who can now boast two indoor coaching facilities next door to each other above the professional’s shop.

The first one was installed by head pro James Curtis a couple of years ago with help from the club and it has proved to be so successful under the Manchester Golf Performance Centre that a joint venture has seen the recent opening of the second studio.

In charge of the second studio will be assistant pro Marcus Dunning who brings a vast amount of knowledge of the

golf swing to the facility.

Marcus represented Lancashire many times as an amateur and then enjoyed a four-year golf scholarship in North Carolina.

There he studied all aspects of the game with particular attention to golf swing bio-mechanics.

From the experience gained in North Carolina Marcus moved to Denver, Colorado, where he turned professional and gained a very strong teaching reputation.

On his return to his native North West Marcus joined the MGPC team where he coaches golf at all levels from beginner

to elite.

Marcus said, “we have a top teaching facility at Chorlton and another venture I will be starting this year is a junior academy on Sundays along with a ladies clinic.

“All are welcome to come along and try out the facilities and opportunities at Chorlton; I structure and work towards different programmes based around my clients’ goals.”

They have had little success on the board but are always welcoming to visitors and participate fully on their travels around south Manchester.

But they did gain local bragging rights in a recent 4-3 win over

i ndoor golf coaching studios are becoming a feature at many golf clubs and there is a demand for the state-

of-the-art facilities in comfortable surroundings by an increasing number of golfers of all abilities.

T he carlton club in whalley range have been members of the south Manchester log end darts league for

many years.


Originally based in Withington, South spent many happy years on the fabulous Christie Playing Fields along with other top local clubs.

When it was used for building development South had a nomadic existence for several years before setting up home at Chorlton Sports Club on Hardy Lane for their two teams.

South have enjoyed a typical up and down success sequence over the years but have posted trophy wins in their league as well as winning the Manchester Amateur Cup.

They have played in the very competitive L and C Premier division for a number of seasons but this season saw a slow start keep them firmly in the relegation zone.

But a fine sequence of results in recent weeks, including a 2-0 win over Premier division leaders Spurley Hey, has seen them climb out of the bottom two needing just a couple of wins to secure the top spot for their Centenary year.

Key to South’s success over the years has been the superb work put in by long-serving committee members Frank Forster and Jim Donohue.

Chorlton-based South West Manchester CC will be fielding men’s, ladies and mixed teams in a very busy schedule. Looking to retain their title are the Vets team who play in the

South Manchester Vets League.

Last year they won the title and will be battling hard to retain it.
