Well it is that time of year when my thoughts turn to snow and so I thought I would feature some pictures which showed the township in the grip of winter. The first was taken where the Brook twists away from what is now Brookburn Road. Today the view across to the church and the barn of Hannah Cheshire at Ivy Farm is hidden by the modern Bowling Green Hotel and the row of houses that follow the line of the brook into Chorltonville.
The postcard was sent in the November of 1908 but the image is likely to be much older. To the right beyond the barn is the Queen and Pasley Laundry with is distinctive tall chimney which dates the photograph to after 1893 when the laundry was opened.
But there is much in the picture which could take us back to the middle decades of the 19th century. The old Bowling Green Hotel which stood slightly to the side of the parish church was built in the
1780s, while the cottage on the left behind the hut had been built by 1818 and may be older.
So with a little imagination and a will to wipe out most of the buildings to the east of Hannah Cheshire’s barns we could be staring at the village from the meadows at anytime during the 19th century.
And it doesn’t take much to think yourself back to this equally wintering scene sometime in the late 19th or early 20th century. We are on the meadows and this particular image crops up regularly on postcards. In this case the publishers seized the opportunity and chose to reissue it with *“Best Wishes for a happy Xmas and a prosperous New Year.”*
Looking through the collection there are other examples of the same thing going on which shouldn’t surprise us. Commercial photographers regularly toured the township taking pictures and often went along snapping the newly built houses which were then sold to the householders.
And this was the age of the postcard helped by the fact
that there were a number of collections and deliveries each day, making it possible to send a card in the morning to arrange a meeting in the early afternoon.
But I want to finish with a photograph that crops up in all of the books of Chorlton and perfectly reflects what we associate with a late December day. The weather had been cold enough for the thin layer of water on this meadow field for it to freeze over and so provide an opportunity of people to practice their skating.
Now we did have a skating rink which was situated on the corner of Longford and Oswald Roads run by Chorlton-cum-Hardy Ice Skating Company but it lasted just a short time, leaving only this frozen expanse of water as a place to play.

Love film, but hate paying through the nose for popcorn? A trip to the flicks can be an impersonal and expensive treat these days - not least at the refreshment counters - with multiplexes dominating the landscape, and suburban cinemas all but extinct (did you know Chorlton used to have not one but three independent cinemas in its day?). But it doesn’t have to be that way. Chorlton Film Institute is a ‘guerrilla cinema’ group, a not-for-profit venture, whose aim is to make independent art house films more accessible within the community. Showing films
on the third Thursday of every month at St Clements Church on Edge Lane, the price of a ticket (a very reasonable £5) covers the cost of hiring the film; whilst tea, coffee, wine and tasty treats are available for a small donation. Last month I attended their showing of Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, an unusual story in that it addresses a section of society so often overlooked by cinema: namely, the elderly. With a stellar British cast, including Dames Judi Dench and Maggie Smith - along with Bill Nighy, Celia Imrie and Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev
Patel - the film follows the lives of seven senior citizens who decide to spend the remainder of their days at the hotel of the title, a shabby hostelry in India. What follows touches upon racism, poverty, secrets, lies - and, ultimately, belated life lessons. To find out more about forthcoming movies at St
Clements Church, check out their website at http://chorltonfi.pbworks.com or
visit them on Facebook. Leon Horton

You will need
• 45cm long skinny piece of tie
• Stiff felt, about 10x10cm• Ruler• Two or three small buttons• One brooch backing• Needle & thread• Scissors
Make yourself an Armadillo Tie Brooch Danielle Lowy from Rubbish Revamped shows you how to rustle up an original gift for someone who has everything … except for an armadillo brooch! It’s the perfect project for a tie that’s become too worn or stained on the front but might have some nice memories. Now where’s that old school tie?
Invent your own tie
creature. Can you get any crazier than Turkey Lurkey?
Send your photos in to [email protected]
for us to share.
1. Cut a 45cm length from the thin end of a tie. Starting with the cut end, wind the tie in a spiral and sew it together along one side as you wind it.
3. Stitch down the pointy piece of the tie.
6. Stuff some felt off-cuts into the back of the tie to fill the hole, then sew the felt head to the tie.
7. Sew on buttons for eyes. Add one to the snout too if you like.
4. Cut out your ears from the template - or make up your own version. Trace them on the felt and cut out the felt.
5. Sew the brooch backing onto the felt, near the top of the head.
2. After about three winds, pull the tie into a bit of a cone shape to make a snout. Continue sewing until you reach the tip.

Book Reviews
Festive Gifts...
Despite some stiff competition from the world of fiction, this has been one of our best-selling books of 2012. And no wonder: anyone who’s ever taken a stroll around Chorlton must have been struck by the age of some of the buildings, and wondered how they came about. This is just the book to explain how. It’s really the tale of how circumstances transformed a small 19th century farming community into a vibrant and popular modern South Manchester suburb (but then, we are biased). It’s a handsome volume, heavily illustrated and tastefully designed. The text itself, the result of extensive research by local historian Simpson, is absolutely packed with detail and information. But it remains an accessible and highly satisfying read, confident, evocative and at points even rather lyrical in tone. We’ll be sure to sell a stack of these in the run-up to Christmas, and indeed over many years to come.
If you’re not a fan of Miranda Hart then read no further, this book is not for you. If however like me you have been glued to her various TV appearances then buy this book or convince someone to buy it for you for Christmas! Written as a letter to her younger self this hysterical look at life will make you cry with laughter. As with her eponymous TV show she address the chapters direct
to the reader and also to this 16 year old Miranda. As well as being fall off your sofa funny it’s also quite poignant to read what 16 year old Miranda believes about her future. I don’t think she was that different to most 16 year olds who believe that once you’re an adult life just sorts itself out and social events are no longer awkward. Future Miranda hasn’t the heart to tell her that things don’t get much easier. However future Miranda seems to be getting along fine not living the life she planned at 16!Having read this it’s such a relief to still believe that this crazy slightly neurotic woman would be great fun to go out with. There’s nothing worse than read a celebrity biography and discovering the subject is nothing but a misery. As TV Miranda’s Mother would say, “Such fun!”

December can be a contemplative month, inviting us to reflect on the year past and consider certain decisions for the near future. Whether we’ll be able to get to the Christmas markets on an early evening when a. we will miss the crowds and b. it’s not raining, may be one of them. Another more philosophical contemplation usually hinges around an observance of time – how quickly it passes - and on how nature exemplifies a sense of continual renewal that is both reliable and predictable.
Once
the leaves have fallen and the winter garden takes on a sparser, skeletal frame, the things that stand out all the more are the usually bright and seasonally rich winter berries.
There is something about winter berries that taps into a pseudo-christian mythological imagination (say that after three schooners of sweet sherry) – the stuff of Victorian Christmas cards and carols, and there is something in it. Religious or not, certain trees bearing winter berries have an ancient history of mythology attached to them.
The yew tree (Taxus baccata) is perhaps the most prolific with
olive-like, bright red seed cones, a tree associated
with immortality, renewal and regeneration – which is ironic seeing as every part of the tree is poisonous. There are said to be yew trees dating back thousands of years, pre-dating Britain’s cemeteries
and churchyards where they stand in number,
revered by the Celts and worshipped by Druids.
We have veteran yew trees at Dunham Massey and in Wythenshawe park. One of the oldest at around 2,000 years, with a girth of 31feet, stands in the grounds of a ruined priory in Berkshire.
The yew was also the original Christmas tree. Other winter berry-bearing shrubs that have graced British gardens, parks and roadsides for many years, but which are sometimes overlooked, are things like the common Spindle – Euonymous europaeus – with its vibrant pink and orange winged fruits and more unusually, the ‘Beauty Berry’ - Callicarpa bodinieri (var. giraldii ‘Profusion’ is recommended by horticulturalists) which has stand-out purple berries from October onwards.
Perhaps the best known December berry and always worth having in the garden, is the holly – Ilex aquifolium – but remember the berries appear on the female variety and (unlike in the human variety) may need a male in close proximity to bear fruit.

December in your Garden 23
Did you know that Chorlton has its very own theatre and arts centre? It’s right on your doorstep and it’s called The Edge. The Edge is run by local registered charity, Waters Edge Arts, producers of high quality participatory and mainstream theatre. The Edge team continues to transform an old Victorian Sunday school into a bustling theatre & arts centre for the local community and beyond. The centre houses a 70 seat theatre and several studio spaces, for use by amateur, community and professional companies. It is based on Manchester Road, between Wilbraham Road and Edge Lane (see the treasure map). They are dedicated to producing new writing for mainstream and participatory theatre. For both of the past two years they’ve produced large scale, high quality community productions, as part of Chorlton Arts Festival. For the first, This is Chorlton Calling, older residents of Chorlton (the oldest being 102!) told stories, which were then acted, sung, and danced by a 50-strong cast of community actors. The second was a musical adaptation of Great Expectations with a cast of over 70 community actors. The Edge’s project called JUMP! runs every Thursday from 1pm-3.30pm. It was envisioned as a free space for people out of work to come and be creative and develop skills at any level. One of the main aims of the project is to guide participants and
encourage peer-led activities, enabling skill sharing and swapping. Participants come from all kinds of backgrounds. Since the end of October there have been weekly sessions led by a creative writing facilitator, learning new skills. The sessions will culminate in excerpts of participants’ work being read by professional actors in the New Year. The Edge plans to be a cultural hub for the area, and to expand JUMP!’s remit to providing free arts activities every day for people out of work.
As well as their participatory work, they are also a producing house: this winter’s production is called ‘Dreaming Under a Different Moon’. Based in Chorlton, I’ve been teaching guitar and songwriting in Manchester, Stockport and Bolton for over 5 years. I initially began teaching when I was approached by people who’d seen me perform at gigs and because I don’t come from a classical or traditional background (I only have 3 fingers on my fretting hand and I’m self taught to a Grade 8 distinction on guitar) I tend to use more unorthodox methods to teach. I believe it’s important to recognise that everyone learns differently and for this reason I have a lot of success with people who might not otherwise think it was something they could do, or have had bad learning
experiences with other
teachers. Many people I teach say they wish they’d begun lessons when they were younger but I actually believe it’s never too late, I teach as many retirees who want to bang out tunes and finger-pick without reading music as I do children learning grades and standard notation (to date my students have a 100% success rate in RGT and Rockschool examinations, all with merits or distinctions). Music is for everyone and there WILL be a method we can find to get you to make it. Although I teach a lot of people on a weekly basis I also do lessons intermittently for those wishing to refine their playing/writing without committing to a regular slot. For anyone interested in learning I travel to you and I offer new-starters 6 lessons for the price of 5 and, if you’re thinking of buying lessons for a loved one, I do gift cards for Christmas/Birthdays etc .
I also do lessons on a pay as you go basis and the first
lesson is half price. There are lots of testimonials on my website, please call me if you have any queries.

A Crafty Gift
If you’re looking for a present that’s a bit different, maybe even something personalised to show it’s not just been whipped off a shelf, you’d be hard put to find something more original than one of ‘Helen Makes’ crocheted Monster Friends. Helen crochets these to order working from just a couple of photos and a short description. No detail is too hard and she says, the weirder, the better! Posing for you here are two recently made Monster Friends, ordered by Danielle for her husband Bruce as an anniversary present. “As Bruce is a keen runner, I asked Helen
to dress him in running gear. He also got a medal and of course his football team scarf” said Danielle “I’m a bit jealous of his long legs in real life too, but very taken with my hair and purple glittery top!”There are more Monster Friends - and their owners - to look at on her website gallery at www.helenmakes.co.uk. Monsters cost £50 for standard sized ones and £30 for smaller ones. To order your monster for a friend, family member or
even for yourself or your pet (yes, really!) contact Helen at [email protected]
Christmas is coming, and the goose is getting... Well, we all know what the poor old goose is getting. Best not think about it. Think about this instead: we all know how commercial the festive period has become - not least in the act of gift giving - and despite the recession, our generosities continue unabated. But why not opt for something a little more personal this yuletide and give the gift of creativity? No, I’m not getting all Blue Peter and rushing out for double-sided sticky tape. I’m thinking arts and crafts. I’m thinking courses. I’m thinking, specifically, of sewing classes. Not only would you be giving
a unique gift for a friend or loved one, but you’d also be helping them develop new skills.Ruth Lazarus has been running sewing courses from the Pottery Corner on Beech Road for two years. Trained in Clothing, Design and Technology at Hollings College (now part of the Met University), Ruth offers basic sewing skill classes - with all equipment and materials provided - to help her students make their own clothes, cushions, gifts, etc, in a relaxed and informal setting. She also runs patchwork classes, and starting next
year will begin Stage II sewing courses.
The basic sewing skills course
costs £120 for five two-hour sessions and
runs on Monday evenings. With only five people per class, affording students a lot of individual attention, you might want to book early. The next course starts on January 14th 2013. To book a place - either for yourself or as a Christmas present for a friend - you can contact Ruth on 0161 881 9861 or email her at [email protected]
