As Mayor of the City of Cotati, I'm pleased to welcome you to our beautiful city.
Founded in 1893, Cotati has long been considered the "Hub" of Sonoma County, by virtue of its central location, and its distinct and historic hexagonal plaza. Surrounded by beautiful vistas of hills, vineyards, majestic oaks and redwoods, Cotati offers all the benefits of living in a small city, with the cultural advantages of being located near major urban centers and a highly acclaimed state university. Cotati's roots are steeped in agriculture and music, and our citizens are proud of the diverse and charming community that has been shaped by over 100 years' history.
Cotati's residents are very passionate about how we plan ahead for our future. We are actively looking to expand our business base in a way that complements, enhances and protects our small town atmosphere. We have an energetic and involved business community and a variety of retail experiences. There are a number of events and celebrations that take place throughout the year that offer something for everyone. Our annual Kids' Day Parade and Festival, summertime Farmers' Markets, the Cotati Jazz Festival, Oktoberfest, our annual Holiday Tree Lighting Celebration, and the Cotati Accordion Festival, the largest Accordion Festival in California, all take place in historic La Plaza Park, in the heart of Cotati.
We encourage you to come and visit, and in the process discover the spirit of Cotati. While you're here, enjoy our public art displays and visit the Historical Society Museum located in City Hall.

We are so lucky to be in Cotati with the terrific downtown, special events that take place throughout the year and the nicest people around! Cotati has a long history that began with its hexagonal plaza (La Plaza Park) and street grid that was designed during the 1890s by Newton Smyth as an alternative to the traditional
grid. Dr. Thomas Page's barn once stood where the plaza is today, and each of the streets surrounding the plaza is named after one of his sons.
The Chamber of Commerce is one of the oldest community organizations in the area, and continues to promote the community and help attract new businesses — from helping to establish Sonoma State College back in 1959 (now a university) to starting the Cotati Farmers Market, and producing or co-producing popular events such as the Cotati Jazz Festival and Oktoberfest.
We hope you will make great use of this publication as you consider the many things to be involved with in town. Oliver’s Market, our hometown grocery store and so much more, turns 30 years old this year!
Employee-owned, locally based, now four stores strong and on the leading edge of community involvement and activism in promoting local food and businesses, Oliver’s is celebrating the 30th anniversary of their flagship store here in Cotati and the good folks there are planning a huge community celebration in La Plaza Park at the end of the summer.
The Cotati store first opened in 1988 by founder and president, Steve Maass, who has lived in Sonoma County for over 40 years and serves as a Director of the Redwood Empire Food Bank. He began his retailing career in 1972 as the founder of Maass Produce that operated roadside produce stands around the San Francisco Bay Area.
His vision when he opened the first store was to create a place where customers truly enjoyed shopping. “Basically what I wanted in the store,” he says, “was to put in things that I liked. I knew about produce because I had sold produce on the side of the road and that was an incredibly successful business, so I knew I could do better with the produce.”
He was soon joined by Tom Scott who supplemented Maass’ entrepreneurial skills with a grocery store management and

As CEO, Tom played a key role at Oliver’s until his retirement in 2016. “You know there wasn’t a computer in the store when we started, it was all cash registers,” Steve recalls. “We had twelve employees and we had to learn how to do the books, the financials, all those things, but we started growing right away and we never stopped growing.”
“As we learned, we grew more,” he says, “and as we grew more we grew more, and we’re still growing. It’s kinda crazy. We have eleven hundred people now; there’s quite a difference between twelve and eleven hundred, right?”
The Cotati store expanded from 25,000 square feet to 36,000 square feet in 1994 as Maass and Scott created a distinctive “Oliver’s Mix” of fresh and local products, natural and bulk foods, gourmet and ready-to-eat foods, and core general grocery items. “In ‘94 we made a big change when we added 11,000 square feet to the store, and integrated organic and natural foods,” Steve says. “We added a big cheese section, a big deli, and salad bar and really changed the concept of the store more or less. We took a chance and became a crossover store and now other stores are trying to do what we do.”
In 2000, the Montecito store opened in Santa Rosa; the Stony Point Santa Rosa store followed in 2007; and in May of 2016, the Windsor store opened its doors.

mission has always been to connect with the community around them and, as they say, keep the focus local. Go Local Sonoma County is a network of locally-owned businesses, residents, non-profit organizations, and government agencies working together to build the local economy by supporting local business-es and promoting sustainable practices. Oliver’s has been a leader in the “Go Local” movement in the region and is the largest supporter of prod-ucts made and grown in Sonoma County, carrying produce, food prod-ucts, and health and beauty items from over 600 Sonoma County busi-nesses and selling over $25M per year in Sonoma County products. At the bottom of every store receipt is the total amount spent on local products, so that the customer can be aware of their support of local companies.
Oliver’s also believes in giving back to the community in a number of ways, no more so than after last year’s fires. To support the increased need for local medical services following the devastating fires, Oliver’s Market made a $100,000 contribution to the Santa Rosa Community Health Center’s Capital Campaign. Oliver’s community programs and campaigns result in record-breaking $621,453.09 to local charity and fire relief in 2017, the company’s highest amount of direct community support in its thirty-year history. “In every way we can, we try and support all we can, the Redwood Empire Food Bank, the Santa Rosa Community Health, all the schools,” Steve says. “We really try and help, the football teams, the music programs, we’re really trying to support those as much as we can. We do the senior citizen 10% off on Wednesdays, that’s helpful for the seniors, and our stores are small, comparatively to Safeway. But we have a lot of aisles in them!”

local schools and non-profit groups and programs donating gift cards and food to local charity, s u p p o r t i n g children’s sports team events and two large c o m m u n i t y events each - the Heart Walk and the Human Race. Their local musicians’ CD Project along
with sales of holiday bells to benefit Redwood Empire Food Bank resulted in a donation of $7,164.39. The largest form of community support each year comes with the eScrip Oliver’s Community Card, which allows 3% of every purchase to go to the customer’s non-profit of choice. Over 500 Sonoma County non-profits are registered, and 2014 donations totaled over $240,000, and over $1.5 million since the program began.
A further part of Oliver’s mission is providing incentive for their employees, so the company has turned itself over to its workers. Literally. Employees now have a real vested financial interest in the company along with other benefits like self-funded health insurance so that every eligible employee has coverage. They also work to create flexible schedules for students and other needs,
and offer a Wellness Program, which includes special discounts on healthy foods, free smoking cessation products and more. This sense of ownership in turn only adds to the quality of service and experience. The employees are vested in their own work and it shows.
Supermarkets today are in the midst of some fierce price wars. Having to fight the likes of Amazon, Costco and Walmart, let alone each other, has reduced profits in the aisles to mere micro-cents in many areas. But through it all, the locally-sourced superior quality of Oliver’s fare and service has allowed them to not only survive but thrive. “The difference between us and those stores,” he says, “is we make everything and we source everything with really good ingredients and try and keep our prices as fair as we can.” Oliver’s has experienced impressive growth each year, as trends have come to support local products and businesses, Oliver’s customers remain engaged and loyal amid a very competitive marketplace. “It’s been a good run; we’ll see what happens in the future, because things are changing so very rapidly,” Steve says.
Plans for anniversary celebrations, both at the store and in down-town Cotati, are still in the works, and details will be announced soon. Many people who visit from other parts of the country often comment that we don’t realize how lucky we are to have a local mar-ket like Oliver’s with such high quality. Here’s to the next 30 years!

Many of our camps run from 9am-12pm or 1pm-4pm. Since a lot of parents are crazy busy, we offer morning extended care from 7:30am or afternoon extended care until 6:00pm. Outside they can play a group game or just relax in the shade with camp friends and staff.*This is an add-on option for partial day camps. Camp Cotati Counselor in Training (CIT) Program – Age 13-17Beginning June 11, M-F 9:00am-3:00pm Fee: $50/week
The CIT program is designed to prepare and train young adults to become future Camp Counselors. This training will provide the CIT with a hands-on practical experience laying the foundation for development of skills necessary to become a future Camp Counselor. The CIT will be working with children ages 5 to 12 years old. While this training is specific to summer camps, the CIT will find aspects of the training that may be applied to any job. Specifically, the CIT will learn the following: * How to plan and implement large and small group activities * How to manage small groups of children * Basic techniques of positive reinforcement and discipline * Basic techniques of behavior management
CITs will be trained with the oversight of a City of Cotati employee and will be given the opportunity to grow and improve. While the City of Cotati does intend on training a CIT to become a future Camp Counselor, participation in the CIT program is in no way a guarantee for future employment. Among the array of classes for mind and body and recreational program for young and old that are available from the city of Cotati is an exciting new art class. “Create your own World: Comic Art Class 1” taught by Barbara Golden every Thursday starting in March. Barbara is a veteran artist and teacher widely-admired in the South Bay for her Comic Art workshops and camps. She will be teaching a Cartoon Workshop and art classes for children during the school year and holding camps in the summer.
Barbara is an exciting addition to the Cotati Recreation Department as they look to expand their arts programs. Born in Germany, Barbara took up cartooning while raising three sons and developed her own teaching curriculum which is quite extensive. “I teach mostly comic art classes, she says, “but kids learn all the media, everything from pencil drawing to watercolors, soft pastels, acrylic painting and also digital art. It’s really my own curriculum. I never studied art or cartooning. I came up with it about fifteen years ago, but it’s developed, as I’ve been teaching, I still keep creating new material, because the kids inspire me.”
Students in her classes range from six to sixteen, or eighteen. “I have developed material now that is really structured for each

age group,” she explains, “so I am not having them all doing the same project. Half the class is about learning a lesson and exercising it and the other half is about picking their own projects. They can even pick their own media as well.” She acknowledges that “most kids know the cartoon characters from video games, like Minecraft, so I do adjust to that.”
Learning to draw face and body shapes is the basic rudiments of cartoon art and the raw material for all animation, from Disney to anime. The essential tool for any career in digital art. “The first thing a cartoonist needs to know,” Barbara tells me “is how to draw feelings, how to express those feelings and emotions, and I like to use the kids themselves. I would ask them, what feelings to you know? And they can tell stories about it, and then they draw them.”
“I think what makes my class different,” she says, “is that I really do sit down and listen to their ideas and try to help them bring out their ideas on paper, take them where they are, where they stand, and try to have them create what they have in their mind.”

Instructors: Pete and Ginny Breeland Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art. This class will study basic and flowing exercises with the wooden sword (bokken) and 5 foot staff (Jo). As a housewife and mother of three little boys, she said, drawing cartoons was like a therapeutic treatment for herself. “Whenever the boys got in trouble, which they did a lot, I would draw it out as a cartoon story and I would see the humorous part of it. Instead of being angry at them, when I drew it as a cartoon, I started laughing about it. It changed my whole reaction.”
Immigrating to the U.S. with her husband in 2009, she recently moved to Cotati to be nearer to her grandchildren. Still an active artist, she hopes to establish herself up here as a community artist. “I love painting murals,” she says. “I love doing community art.”
A perfect example of which is Barbara’s art piece at last year’s Christmas tree lighting which drew a big crowd of onlookers. “I had a booth and got kids to do workshops with me,” she recalls, “and the next day at the Shop & Stroll, I put out a big canvas, a big sort of mural, that I painted together with all the people who wanted to help. I had about 50 people come and they painted it with me and then I touched it up after, and now it is actually exhibited in City Hall.”
The mural will be making its way around different businesses in Cotati as part of an auction fundraiser for fire victims and also helps Barbara get the word out about her cartoon classes and Comic Camp. “When I did the community art piece in December and I painted with all these people, literally kids from three to adults of seventy-five years old, they came to my workshops and at the booth we had a list where people could leave their
email addresses and phone numbers if they were interested in me teaching. And I was really surprise how many people signed up!” “I’ve done this for fifteen years, I’ve done a lot of community art, I go out to libraries or if there’s a big festival going on, I’ll put up a big mural for anyone who wants to paint with me and then I can hand out a card or flyer.”

Classes will be held every Thursday, from 4pm to 5.30pm at the Community Center until the end of April. Then in June she will start teaching kids here in Cotati and in Petaluma as well as part of her summer camps program which will be held Monday through Friday with three hour class sessions both morning and afternoon.
