Letter from the Director�e Lynden Chamber of Commerce has for

decades represented the businesses of the Lynden area in a variety of ways. �e most visible are the many community events that are organized by the Chamber, including the Farmer’s Day Parade, Northwest Raspberry Festival, Harvest Festival and Christmas Lighted Parade. Less noticeable to the community are the educational classes, advertising programs, assistance with other organizations and the joint efforts of the City of Lynden and the Lynden Chamber to address community-wide issues such as parks and recreation, maintaining a positive business environment and other issues that contribute to making Lynden such a special place.

It is not by accident that in the pages you are about to peruse, the best businesses in the Lynden area have chosen to offer their services. �is community directory, like so much of what is accomplished in Lynden, is not done without the participation of these and other Lynden Chamber of Commerce members. It is the love of community that these businesses demonstrate daily that is so challenging to demonstrate within the pages of this fine publication.

The Kaemingks choose their home for the future

�ere’s a certain quality of life you search for when you start thinking of where you want your kids to settle down. Where you want them to raise their families. And that quality of life was in the Kaemingks’ hometown of Lynden.

Kevin and Kelly Kaemingk, high-school sweethearts who left Lynden for more than two decades, recently returned home to finish raising their three children, now ages 19, 16 and 12, and provide a family atmosphere with a different pace of life than they had known living outside of Los Angeles.

�e Kaemingk name is well-known in Whatcom County. With Kevin’s father, Elmer, and Kevin’s uncle Hank (a former Sol H. Lewis Man of the Year) and uncle Jim (a former Lynden mayor and the namesake of Lynden’s trail system) and aunt Alyda Mulder in the family mix, there was no shortages of cousins for Kevin growing up. And there were no shortage of siblings either, as Kevin is one of six children in his family (three boys and three girls). Brother Dan has taught at Lynden Christian Middle School for over two decades and sister Kathy (Boon) has lived in Whatcom County her entire life too.

But after growing up at the end of River Road south of town, the Lynden Christian High School graduate decided to attend Northwestern College in Iowa. His high school sweetheart, one year behind him at Lynden High School, wasn’t far behind.

When Kevin graduated from college, he landed his first job at Valley Christian Schools in Cerritos, Calif. Kelly followed a semester later to do her student teaching and was fortunate enough to land a job there too. �e couple has been married for 22 years.

In California, Kevin spent five years as a teacher, five years as the principal of the middle school, six years as the principal of the high school and five years as the

school’s superintendent. But in 2010 the family came back home for good, where Kevin took over as the principal at Lynden Christian High School and Kelly teaches math.

“We started thinking about where we wanted our kids to settle down,” Kevin said. “We hope they settle around us and we asked ourselves what kind of schools would they send their kids to, what kind of quality environment would be around them? Lynden is a great community.”

Of course, family was a major draw, giving the Kaemingks the opportunity to reconnect.

By returning home, they’ve found that the slower pace of life (and what isn’t slower than the L.A. area?) has been “great” and being able to plug right into a community, a church and even a neighborhood has its advantages.

“We are able to own our house for 60 to 70 percent of the cost (of California homes), able to have a yard and we even know our neighbors,” Kevin said. “�at didn’t happen in California.”

Another thing that didn’t happen previously was the ability of the family’s youngest to ride his bike to a friend’s house a few blocks away, something simply not allowable with the massive amounts of traffic in their previous hometown.

Sure, the family misses some of the allure of the big city, but Kevin said he is more than happy to trade those entertainment options in for something he believes is better, something that centers around community.

Lynden operates with a mayor-council form of government. �e part-time mayor (Scott Korthuis since 2010) is assisted by a full-time city administrator (Bill Verwolf since October 2001) and professionals who head the city’s public works, parks, planning, finance, police, and fire departments.

�e City Council’s seven members receive compensation on a per-meeting basis. �e mayor and council members are elected to four-year terms in odd-numbered years.

Lynden recently increased emphasis on maintenance of its major arterials. Construction projects are planned for 2012 and the next several years. Plans for Lynden’s future development are also being reviewed and updated continually.

Lynden is located on State Route 539, a major connector between Interstate 5, which runs north-south through the western portion of the county and provides access to Seattle and Vancouver, B.C., and Trans-Canada 1. Whatcom Transportation Authority (WTA) manages a transit station near the west entrance of town that offers shelter and public restroom facilities for riders. A spacious 80-stall park-and-ride lot adjacent to the station can accommodate recreational vehicles. A city circulator runs once every 90 minutes Monday through Saturday with several stops throughout town. Direct routes run to Bellingham once every 90 minutes, six days a week, with connecting service to Bellis Fair Mall, Whatcom Community College, downtown Bellingham, and the Bellingham transit station, which provides further service. Specialized countywide transportation exists for seniors or those with physical or mental disabilities. Jansen Field (Lynden Municipal Airport) services private aircraft and area businesses. A Burlington Northern Santa Fe spur is still active, providing rail service to the community. Only 20 miles south of Lynden, Bellingham International Airport has regular flights scheduled by carriers Alaska (Horizon) and Allegiant airlines. �e Port of Bellingham is also an important transportation gateway for ocean-going trade.

Local actors thrill theatergoers year-round with musicals, comedies, and dramas. �e Lynden Performing Arts Guild typically presents four productions each year at the Claire vg �omas �eatre, located in the Dutch Village mall and named after a renowned pianist and longtime supporter of the arts.

�e Northwest Washington �eatre Group also holds four performances annually. �e group performs in Lynden Middle School’s Judson Hall Auditorium, named after the “mother of Lynden” Phoebe Judson.

Both of Lynden’s high schools have performances through the year. Lynden High school performs their productions in historic Judson Hall. Lynden Christian High School Drama department features a 590 seat auditorium, built in 2004. In addition to the theatrical performances, the auditorium also hosts band, orchestra, and choral concerts, as well as community events.

Whether you prefer a leisurely stroll through the park or the camaraderie of organized team sports, Lynden offers just what you need to get your heart pumping!

Parks and TrailsLynden City Park

is a peaceful stop along Lynden’s interurban trail system, where people of all ages can enjoy a leisurely afternoon running, cycling, and more.

Families can also visit the park’s new Million Smiles Playground, a 24,000 square foot fun-filled adventure, constructed entirely by local volunteers in 2007.

Originally the homestead of Hans and Lida Berthusen, Berthusen Park was gifted to the city

of Lynden in 1944. With covered picnic areas and a network of trails through acres of old-growth forest, the park is now the backdrop for year-round family and church gatherings.

Centennial Park is located in Downtown Lynden at the corner of Fourth and Grover Streets. �e park is home to Lynden’s memorial obelisk, which stands in honor of war veterans, and several annual events.

Golf CoursesLynden is a golfer’s

paradise. Homestead Golf & Country Club maintains one of the best golf courses in the Pacific Northwest. Next to their 18-hole course, Homestead

offers a pro shop, hotel, restaurant, fitness center, and convention center.

Ten other golf courses are just 30 minutes away. Raspberry Ridge Golf Course, a popular nine-hole course, is only a five minute drive south of Lynden.

SportsIf team sports are the passion of you and/or your

children, you’ll inevitably show up at Bender Fields. �e highly touted recreational complex is used by thousands of soccer, softball, and baseball players in youth, school, and community events each year.

Lynden Youth Sports (LYS) draws over 100 youth teams each year to play soccer, softball, baseball, basketball, volleyball, and football. Teams are sponsored by local businesses and coached by volunteers.

�e Lynden Activity Center/YMCA is equipped with state-of-the-art fitness equipment, tennis courts, swimming pool, and daycare. Programs such as “Girls on the Run,” a training and self-esteem-building fitness course, improve health and life skills.

Other Nearby AttractionsYou don’t have to travel far from Lynden for much

more entertainment. Two of the world’s most beautiful cities – Vancouver, B.C. (45 miles north), home of the 2010 Winter Olympics, and Seattle (100 miles south) – are ideal day trip destinations.

Choose Lynden as a centrally located “base camp” for your next adventure! You’ll have a tough time choosing between numerous nearby bicycling, fishing, and beachcombing opportunities. �e base of 10,778 foot Mt. Baker (90 minutes east of Lynden) beckons skiers, hikers, and picnickers year-round. You can also head west 20 minutes to saltwater beaches, while the exquisite San Juan Islands are easily accessible by ferries and other vessels.

Dave’s Sports Shopby �e Lynden Tribune Staff

�e history of what is now Dave’s Sports Shop goes back to 1957. �at’s when Jude and Gert VanderHoek opened Jude’s Sporting Goods & Housewares in downtown Lynden at today’s location of Colony House Furniture.

Within a few years, the sporting goods section outgrew the housewares. Jude’s shop served as the destination of choice for local sportsmen to get their gear — and maybe also the lowdown on the best fishing and hunting spots.

�e year 1972 brought the first of several expansions. �e VanderHoeks moved the store to the new Fairway Center (where Family Christian Bookstore is located today) and joined the Coast to Coast Hardware franchise. In 1976, son Dave VanderHoek and Dean Hendricks joined in partnership with Jude and Gert. By 1986, having outgrown their space, the partners eagerly took on the task of moving and expanding slightly west in the center. �e store continued to serve the community’s hardware, garden and sporting needs through 1999 when Coast to Coast went through a corporate merger resulting in a name change locally to Ace Hardware & Sports.

�rough all these years, the sporting goods section continued to grow, yet remained in a tight 2,000-foot section at the back of the store. It always was a popular gathering place for local sports enthusiasts.

With the addition of a new Fairway Center section five years ago, things fell into place for Dave to have his own sporting goods shop, and he jumped at the opportunity. He now has 6,300 square feet of space, more than triple that of before. And it feels like every square inch is needed.

Bill Stinson, archery specialist, is coming up on 20 years of working with Dave VanderHoek — the longest among 11 employees.

“�e VanderHoeks are great people to work for, and I love the Lynden community,” Stinson says.

His expertise in archery has been an asset to the store and a springboard for instructing and coaching local youth in archery, with notable success in state

and national competitions.A place like Dave’s

Sports Shop is grand central for all fishing, hunting and camping gear, clothing, licenses and whatever else is needed to be safely and successfully out in the wild.

Stinson likes to promote archery because the hunting seasons are longer than those for guns.

In terms of trends, flyfishing and reloading of one’s own ammunition seem to be on the upswing, and Dave’s is the main store in the region to stay on top of such things, he said.

�e shop is able to help people sell guns online, reaching a far greater audience. It can also place quick special orders for merchandise that may not be in stock.

Both Bill and Dave head off to national shows especially during the winter to see what new merchandise they need to buy to keep the store stocked.

AgricultureIn the midst of 102,584 acres of farmland in

Berthusen Park showcases outdoor activities, local historyby �e Lynden Tribune StaffPark’s namesake moved to Whatcom County from Iowa in 1863

Located just two miles west of downtown Lynden, Berthusen Park offers a scenic piece of local history along with family-friendly activities both annual and daily.

�e park’s namesake, Hans Berthusen, moved to Whatcom County in 1863. A Norwegian immigrant, Berthusen began his

time in the United States in Iowa before traveling west and settling on 160 acres. He eventually added 80 more acres. He succeeded in both dairy and cultivation, and eventually married Lida Hawley, Christmas Day, 1889.

Lida passed away in late 1943, and Hans died a few months later in February 1944. �ey left 263 acres of land to the city of Lynden. �at land became what is now Berthusen Park, but many may ot know just how long the land has functioned as a park.

Larry McPhail is a member and trustee of the antique tractor club that has leased about 30 acres of the park since 1976. He said Berthusen and many Lynden residents treated the land as a park before it was officially a park. McPhail is also on a city advisory committee on the park.

“Twenty to 30 years before it was given to Lynden as a park,” McPhail said, “it was already a park made by Hans for all the kids to know and

enjoy. All their picnics for the school, they were all at Berthusen Park. Straight across the road from his house, he grew popcorn. He made all sorts of snacks for the kids while they were at the park. �ey would actually pop it over an open fire.”

�e city of Lynden has added several kitchens to the park, which can be rented and used by families and other groups for various functions. �e park also features Hans and Lida Berthusen’s barn, built from old growth trees cut from around the land. Visitors can also enjoy the playground, hiking trails, tractor club displays, Bertrand Creek, the Lynden RC Model Airplane Flying Club and the Lynden Shotgun Club (located on the western portion of the land).

�e largest annual event at the park is the Puget Sound Antique Tractor Show & �reshing Bee, which takes place the first week of each August.

Children under 6 free�e Lynden Pioneer Museum began in 1976 as an

American Bicentennial Project. Housed in a historic building built in 1911, the museum immediately became a destination, thanks in part to generous donations from Lynden and Whatcom County citizens of artifacts, documents, photos, and other memories from their pioneer forefathers.

Today it encompasses a collection of 25,000 objects displayed in 5 galleries that cover over 28,000 square feet. Life-size contextual recreations of a pioneer homestead and historic business fronts provide a realistic look into the life of turn-of-the-century Lynden and Whatcom County. Visitors can look into scenes from the past and discover the lifestyles and stories of those that built our community.

�e museum also has the only regular exhibit on the development of Transportation from Horse to Horse power. Visitors and community members alike can explore the amazing Fred Polinder Buggy Collection, a collection of 49 unique horse drawn vehicles (the largest publicly displayed collection west of the Mississippi) and view an annually changing exhibit on the history of the automobile that features new vintage autos every spring.

In addition many opportunities exist at the museum that enrich the lives of locals. �e museum serves as a resource center through its public archives, holds educational programs for local schools and is regularly staffed by dedicated, enthusiastic volunteers. It also offers special tours and community events throughout the year. Over 800 spectators will gather in October to witness demonstrators and historic re-enactors recreate life in Whatcom County a century past. Finally, the museum offers a cozy gift shop full of great deals and unique local items.

�e Northwest Washington Fair’s focus on its rural roots hasn’t prevented the six- day event from becoming one of the biggest exhibitions in the state. Attendance at the fair topped 216,000 in 2010.

�e 2012 fair, scheduled for August 13–18, celebrates the 102nd anniversary of the fair’s existence and features internationally recognized performers, “walk around” entertainers, and musicians.

�e fair enjoys widespread participation from artists, quilters, and landscapers. Still, agriculture is the heart of the fair. Some of the country’s top dairies bring their cows each year to the exhibition, while majestic draft horse wagon hitches are a featured highlight of the event. Hundreds of FFA and 4-H youth fill barns with pigs, sheep, goats, chicks, rabbits, dogs, cats, and more.

�e Lynden PRCA Rodeo, held the weekend following the Northwest Washington Fair, features bull riding, roping, barrel racing, and several other popular events. Reserved seating tickets go on sale annually in June.
