Why we need communication in smartgrid?
Smart Grid system is a system in whichwe have required all the data of energy
generation, transmission and utilizationof whole system .
So without communication it is notpossible for us to collect data of energygeneration, transmission and utilizationof customer.

Smart meter or appliances belongto customer can identify by aunique identity assigned to it.
Identities are assign tocomponents are secured bycryptographic techniques.

Selection of Communication Network
We should select communicationnetwork on the basis of following factors
Cost effective
Support traffic prioritization
Good transmittable range
Bandwidth Power quality
Least number of repetition

Several possible techniques
1. Bluetooth technology can be a:
Possible option for communication ofcontrol signals and to transmit energyconsumption data wirelessly to a centralbase station.
Implementation technique purposed by

2. Power Line Carrier (PLC) and BroadbandPower Line (BPL) communication:
PLC technology is highly efficient forautomation of data in smart meterapplications.
In spite of substantial overhead caused bythe large IPv6 header, this protocol can beapplied even at low PHY layer data rates.

2- Power Line Carrier (PLC) and Broadband
Power Line (BPL) communication:
This technology, with the combination ofthe MAC algorithm can achievesatisfactory delay times and throughput.
Combination might slightly reduce theusable data transfer rate, it will not affect
the overhead at MAC layer..

3. IP network
IP based network protocol would beanother promising option forcommunication
In smart grid communication its advantageis satisfying the security standards.
TCP/IP can also be used as a common
platform for multiple communicationdevices

In addition to above options, Session
Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a text-basedsignaling protocol that is used forcontrolling multimedia sessions such asvideo and Voice over Internet Protocol(VoIP).
SIP can be used on:
Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)
User Datagram Protocol (UDP)
Stream Control TransmissionProtocol (SCTP)

T. Mander et al. proposed a communicationarchitecture that uses DNP3 to produce theprotocol discontinuity between the DNP3
devices for regulated power systemoperations and TCP/IP devices for the smartload and demand management.
This discontinuity in protocols limits the
number of vulnerable attacks from otherTCP/IP devices.

Data object security provides several rulesfor accessing the data in order to avoidunauthorized access that manipulates the
data and device operations.

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) based network
S. Rusitschka et al. proposed an energymeter thatcommunicates using a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) based network.
A smart meter that employs P2P networkcan enhance the range of operations of theappliances.
Value added services can also beimplemented with less capabilityrequirement.

Zigbee network
This is another important and potentialcommunication network for transfer ofdata and control signals.
Zigbee protocol can be used with Home Area Networks (HAN) for data transferover 802.11.x.
By this technique reduce the responsetime and verification delay.

GPRS technology
GPRS technology can be a potentialcommunication medium for transferring both the data and control signalswirelessly over long distances.
A few communication characteristicsthat represent GPRS communication
network have been assessed.

GPRS technology
Lack of tools for detection of a networkfailure would be major setback forimplementing GPRS network in manygeographical locations.
Before deploying a GPRS basedcommunication system in a specific
location, availability and quality of thesignal has to be determined.
