Objective Essential Understanding Vocabulary Materials

Children will use estimation to select two numbers that have a given difference.

There is more than one way to estimate a sum. Rounding gives one way to estimate sums.

Lesson Overview

Lesson

11-8Common Core

In this lesson, children estimate the difference if 2 three-digit numbers. Using front-end numbers, rounding, and using “nice numbers” (ending in fives or compatible numbers) are strategies for estimating that could be

explored. Initially, children can be asked to choose a “best estimate” in multiples of 10 or 100 with no method offered at all.
