Courtship

In counties, such as Canada, that permit free-choice marriages, courtship allowspeople to win the affection of those to whom they are attracted.

- the term is not as relevant in present day Canada

In all societies, courtship rituals include men showing off their resources and women show off the qualities that make them sexually desirable and nurturing

There are different customs and rituals in each culture, historical period and social class. Most do not realize their behaviour conforms to any societal expectations, however.

Arranged Marriages- choice of a life partner was considered too important to be left to inexperienced and young individuals- can be seen as an alliance between families

- seen as a better option as they remove the complications of romantic love, sexual attraction and recreational dating- believe this make divorce less likely, as many cultures disagree with divorce

- some religions believe parents have sacred duty to ensure their children have good marriages- based on social homogamy

- should not be confused with forced marriage - individuals should still get to approve ofs their parents choice and do not marry against their will

- it is now customary that individuals get to know each other first before they marry

- divorce rate is significantly lower in arranged marriage

Nov 1211:21 AM

- based on the expectation that love will develop after marriage

- less likely to expect that their spouse is a "soul mate"- without these expectations, perhaps that leads to a happier marriage

- in arranged marriages, couples reported love became stronger over 10 years, whereas free choice married couples reported that love declined

- over time, arranged marriage couples described themselves as happier and more satisfied in their marriages
