Focus on Star Wars Fandom!
35 years ago, a little movie called Star Wars hit the big screen. Since then, it has become a cultural icon and inspired fans to create their own Star Wars communities. At Comic-Con, these groups can be found wandering throughout the convention center in amazingly detailed costumes, or at their booths, located up on the Mezzanine level.
Saturday is the unofficial Star Wars day, when Legions of fans in Imperial and Rebel costumes spread out in a show of The Force. The 501st and the Rebel Legion are two of the fan groups celebrating their love of costuming and all things Star Wars here at Comic-Con. Both groups celebrate in recreating realistic costumes from the Star Wars universe, and appear in them for a variety of charity work. Many members belong to both fan clubs and take fierce pride in their costumes.
501st Legion (www.501st.com)
Do you feel the power of the Dark Side calling you? Ever want to take your love of the Empire to a higher level, or join the ranks of the Sith? Do you dream of crushing rebels under your white boots, or maybe using the Force to squeeze information out of
prisoners? Well, I have just the group for you. The 501st Legion, AKA Vader’s Fist, is a Star Wars fan club devoted to building and wearing Star Wars costumes, specifically Stormtroopers, Sith Lords, and related Imperial forces.
Want to be part of the fun? How about joining in on the annual Droid Hunt? Stop by their booth on Friday and if you are lucky, you might be asked to become those “droids we are looking for” and maybe earn a Star Wars related prize. On Saturday, teams of Stormtroopers will spread out in search of these special “droid” badges. You can earn raffle tickets that can be redeemed Sunday for prizes.
The 501st, founded in 1997 by Albin Johnson and a group of friends, and is celebrating their 15th anniversary of promoting Star Wars fandom. The 501st has spread to every continent and includes more than 5,000 members, all with amazingly detailed and lovingly crafted Imperial costumes.
The 501st members come from all walks of life and careers; from military members to doctors. Their passion for Star Wars has forged them into a great big family.
Stop by their booth on the mezzanine (#MZ 20), and talk to an Imperial recruiter,
and check out the costumes. Also, on Saturday at 11am, come see the largest Imperial photo meet-up on the back stairs/patio of the mezzanine level, and maybe you too will join the Dark Side… As Darth Vader say’s “I find your lack of faith disturbing.”
Rebel Legion (www.rebellegion.com)
Perhaps you’d prefer the “light side” of the Force and be a Jedi Knight, Rebel Pilot, Princess Leia, Han Solo, or Chewbacca? The Rebel Legion is a fan club focused on creating and wearing the costumes of the Rebel forces of the Star Wars universe.
There are a huge variety of characters and costumes for every age, shape, and skill level, all the way up to the time consuming and detailed Padme gowns, all hand made by Rebel Legion members.
The Rebel Legion has been around since 1999, when Tony Troxell started the group, and in 2002 the Southern California group, Sunrider base was founded, and quickly became the largest and most active base in the Rebel Legion. There are outposts worldwide; from Malaysia, Hawaii, Costa Rica, and Belgium. The Rebel Legion focuses on community outreach, bringing the Star Wars characters to life at charity events.
Want to check out their photo shoot and get a picture with Chewbacca or maybe Luke Skywalker? Then swing by the mezzanine level on Friday at 4:30 pm on the back stairs/patio and enjoy the light side of the Force.
As Rachel Williams, Commanding Officer of the Rebel Legion’s Sunrider Base says “Our motto is very simple, but so perfectly put. “We’re the Good guys.”
Eisner Awards Tonight!
The 24th annual Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards will be held tonight in the Indigo Ballroom at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. This year’s title sponsor is Syfy, the television destination for imagination-based entertain-ment. The Eisner Awards, considered the “Oscars” of the comic book industry, will be given out in 28 catego-ries, for works published in 2011.
