ContactsThere are several different types of contact materials for relays.The main distinction can be made between single contacts and twin contacts. While single contacts are more suitable for higher loads, twin contacts are sig-nificantly more reliable for low switching loads, i.e. < 24V, < 100mA.

Contact materialThere is no all-purpose universal contact.AgNi is used as a standard contact material for a wide range of applications.For applications in aggressive atmospheres, AgNi contacts with hard gold plating (up to 10µm) are recommended. There is however no other purpose then corro-sion protection during storage. Relays with tungsten pre-contacts are available for very high switching currents (up to 500A, 2.5ms.

Minimum loadThe minimum load values are recommended values under normal working conditions i.e. regular switching, no special ambient conditions, etc.Under these conditions reliable switching can be expected.

Contact resistanceIn practice the contact resistance may vary depending on the switching load and other environmental conditions.For higher currents the contact resistance is around 10mΩ.

Contact spacingNormally all open contacts have an air gap between 0,5.. .1.5mm.They are referred to as µ contacts according to the Low-Voltage Directives and associated standards. These contacts are not suitable for safe disconnection.For switching of DC loads, large contact clearances are requested for the quench-ing of the electric arcs. (Pls.refer to special relays: Series connections.)

Switching capacityThe contact switching capacity is the product of switching voltage and switch-ing current.For AC, the permitted switching capacity is generally enough to handle the max. continuous AC1 current over the whole voltage range.It is not allowed to exceed the load limit curve for DC switching because a re-maining switch-off-arc would destroy the relay immediately. The DC switching capacity is 100W (DC 1).

Drive (coil)A distinction is made between standardised voltages according to EN 60947 as guaranteed values, and typical values which can be expected with a high degree of probability.

Pick-up voltage, Release voltageThe pick-up voltage is the voltage at which the relay engages safely. The typi-cal trip voltage for DC is approx. 65% of Unom and approx. 75% of Unom for AC.The release voltage is approx. 25%, resp. 60% of Unom.For DC, these voltages depend strongly on the temperature coefficient for Cu.This is however not the case for AC, where the constant inductive resistance over a wide temperature range is the controlling factor.Under voltages in AC relays results in humming and armature fluttering and should therefore be avoided.

Operating voltage rangeThe upper voltage limit of the coil is determined by the heat and the ambient temperature.The self-heating trough the contacts under high loads should not be under-estimated since it may even be higher than the dissipated energy of the coil. Significantly high but short period overvoltage however provides no problem for intermittent operations.In doubt please consult our specialist or ask for the respective characteristic curve diagram.

Coil connectionsDifferent coil connections can be integrated into the relay as an option. A cost-effective freewheeling diode is available for DC coils. Please note that the stated release times are generally specified without the coil connection.While an additional LED status indicator has practically no effect, a freewheel-ing diode (D) will lead to an increase in release time by a factor 2 to 5, or 0 ms to 30ms.For AC coils, VDRs or RC elements may be used. In this case resonance effects may have to be considered. VDRs and common RC elements may increase release times by < 5ms.

General designComat (Releco) relays are made from carefully selected high-quality materi-als. The components comply with the latest environmental regulations such as RohS.The meticulous design makes the relays particularly suitable for any industrial application and engineering installation.The robust terminals, mechanical position indicator, dynamic and permanent hand activators, all integrated in the standard relay make them particularly service friendly.Colour coded hand test buttons dependent on the type of coil voltage is another useful feature.

Options - Different coil connections- Freewheeling diodes- LED displays- Bridge rectifiers for AC/DC drives, etc.Additionally, because of short-term availability of special versions for practically any drive voltage up to DC 220V/AC 400V the relays are a cost effective solution for many applications For safety reasons, manual operated test buttons may be replaced with a blank button, if required.

Further informationTo select the most suitable relay and to guarantee a reliable operation and a long service life for the application, several factors need to be considered. In particular these are:-Number of cycles-Switching frequency-Ambient conditions-Load type-Switch-on current and load switch-off energy.

ExampleIf the number of cycles are expected to exceed > 100,000 operations per year. (E.g. clock generators, fast running machines), an electronic solution is perhaps more appropriate. Comat is able to offer a suitable relay from our standard product range.In AC applications, crosstalk caused by long control leads is often a problem and can result in constant humming of the relay or even inadvertent triggering due to interference. Here too, we offer solutions.Various, apparently harmless loads may lead to very high switch-on currents or switch-off energy values This may result in an unacceptable reduction of the service life. Inductive DC loads are especially harmful.

Characteristics of various loads:

Heating circuitsNo high switch-on currents, no high switch-off loads.

Incandescent lamps, halogen lampsSwitch-on currents during a few ms in the range 10 x rated IN. Switch-off at rated load.

Low-energy lampsVery high, with very short switch-on currents due to built-in decoupling capaci-tors. Contacts have a tendency to fuse.

Transformers, AC contactorsSwitching on during zero-transition may avoid high inrush currents. If switching before or after the zero crossing, switch-on currents of 8. . .15 x rated IN.may occur. High inductive switch-off energy is possible. The load must be wired, due to EMC problems.

8-/11-pole plug-in time delay relay systemThe simplest time delay relay system world-wide, fitting all 8 or 11-pin relay sockets (octal /sub-magnalite).Original time cubes® are simply placed between socket and relay without rewiring.

In this way, even as a retrofit, all industrial relays can be provided with the required timing functions without additional space being required. The con-tact connections of the relay on the socket remain trough-connected.

The time delay relays and monitoring relays con-sist of the plug-in CT time function modul and 11-pole CT output relay and the system socket C12B. Both system components can be com-bined freely with one another. This allows the equipment to be selected optimally for specific use. Subsequent modifications, for example a change from mechanical contacts to solid-state outputs, are possible at any time by simple reconnec-tion. This provides the user a complete, universal system, the high flexibility of which is unique throughout the world.

The Comat CT System is modular.The time delay relays and monitoring relays consist of the plug-in CT electronicmodule and an 11-pole CT output relay. Both system components can be com-bined freely with one another. This allows the equipment to be selected optimallyfor specific use.Subsequent modifications, for example a change from mechanical contacts tosolid-state outputs, are possible at any time by simple reconnection.This provides the user a complete, universal system, the high flexibility of whichis unique throughout the world.

The system socket C12B0 servesas a basis for the vibration-free recep-tion of the electronic module. It has a4-pole module slot in which the CT-module –also without output relay–locks in such a way that it is vibra-tion-free. Contact is via twin knife con-tacts which ensure optimal contact re-liability.

With the A2-connector C-A2plug-in flush in the socket, the neutralconductor (N / –) can be connectedas a 10A bus from socket to socket.This considerably reduces wiringwork.

Robust terminals for cross-sectionsup to 4mm2 and generous labellingfacilities are other advantages of thispractical comat system socket. As var-iants to the standard socket C12B0,two identical sockets, but with printeddevice diagram, are available(C12B1/2). By clearly identifying theconnections, these sockets ensure ra-pid, error-free and therefore eco-nomical wiring. When a service is re-quired, they faciliate fault location.

The CT module demonstrates co-mat's practical experience in the areaof industrial electronics. All controland display elements are arranged onthe front and are labelled in a self-explanatory manner for internationaluse. The values set are also clearlylegible when the module has been in-stalled.

Printed diagrams explain the func-tions, and the connection scheme di-rectly indicates the appropriate termi-nals in the system socket.

A transparent front cover providesprotection from unauthorized mis-adjustment and additionally locks themodule onto the output relay.

Triggering is performed with theoperating voltage (L1or +). Hence,no potential-free contacts are re-quired. Triggering complies with themachine standards. A parallel con-nection of other users to B1 is admis-sible.

The 2 voltage ranges UC110-240Vand UC24-48V have been chosen bycomat to ensure a high level of reliabi-lity in triggering. They permit use withan AC or DC supply and optimal ad-aptation to the operating conditions ofmodern controls.

In case of an even broader voltagerange, e.g. 24-240V it is often pos-sible to achieve only currents of a few100µA in the trigger circuit B1 with si-multaneous low threshold voltages toless than 20V. This may lead to unin-tentional triggering due to capac-itive/inductive pickups, or faultyswitching may occur owing to suffi-ciently loaded control contacts.During operation, 50V are readilymeasured on open-ended lines.

The consumption of the CT mod-ules comes to less than 1W.

The output relays have the com-plete device diagram, the perform-ance data and the complete order no.on the front, supported by a colourcode, which indicates an AC coil withred and a DC coil with blue. The .1and .2 relays have a safety manualoperation facility as a standard fea-ture, which switches the contacts onlyafter a lock has been released (two-hand principle).

The standard contacts .1 and .3have proved their worth millions of ti-mes in heavy current applications.The contact material AgNi permits alarge switching range and thanks togenerous dimensioning achieves ahigh number of cycles. With its highbreaking capacity of up to 10A/400V,this contact is a reliable allround con-tact for use both in mains circuits andin the lower voltage range from12V/10mA.

The twin contacts .2 and .4 switchevery circuit with two independentreeds. Compared with single contacts,they provide up to 100 times greatersafety with regard to the level of pos-sible faulty switchings. In spite of theirhigh breaking capacity of up to6A/250V, these contacts are partic-ularly suitable for low switching cur-rents and switching voltages down to1mA/6V.

The solid-state relays are used in-stead of mechanical contacts. In thestandard version .5, the relay has apotential-free output which switchesan AC or DC load in the same way asa mechanical contact. However, itfunctions without bounce or wear,withstands overloads, has short-circuit protection and has a practicallyunlimited life even with full outputload.

Preferred applications are highswitching frequency, for example asrepeat cycle timers, flashing bars withbulb load or extreme inductive loads,for example large solenoid valves,couplings, motors, etc.

An additional protective wiring ofthe output or of the load is not neces-sary in these comat relays for any ap-plication.

They are completely insensitive inan aggressive atmosphere, forexample in the chemical industry, inwaste water treatment plants, etc.

Note on useAccording to the standards «Safety of machines»e.g. EN 60204-1, EN 292-2, triggering with A2-potential (N /–) is only admissible in exceptionalcirumstances.For that reason the comat CT modules are trigge-red by A1-potential (L /+).This makes them unrestrictedly suitable also foruse in machines and systems which must con-form with machine or CE guidelines or directives.

The MV53(50/60Hz) protects single phase consumers in ACnetworks from over- and undervoltage.Overvoltage and undervoltage thresholds can be set indepen-dently in percentage of the nominal voltage using twoDIP-switches (see diagram above).Using a potentiometer allows setting an alarm delay of25ms...2,5s.A two-colored LED shows the definite monitoring status.

Precision DC/RMS Voltage Monitoring Relay

The SSS11, SSU2x and SSU7x are high precision voltage monito-ring relays for DC or RMS AC/DC with interactive front operationand display of values and voltmeter function. Two values for FAILand OK can be programmed. With this, the hysteresis is automati-cally given. Depending of the programmed values the over- orundervoltage monitoring function is defined. Fixed max. and min.values are given for alarm triggering. However, the min. value mo-nitoring can be disabled. The measuring input is galvanically iso-lated from the power supply (2-10). High EMC immunity designand self diagnostic features guarantee very high reliability and along service life. Applications are for example monitoring of batteryvoltage in industrial installations.

The SSU33(50Hz) provides comprehensive monitoring of three-phase mainssupplies with or without neutral.The following mains faults are monitored:Error signal 1 U (V , V ):Exceeding or dropping below the fixed voltage values Umin/Umax for L1-N orL1-L2 (no differential voltage, phase position or frequency fault).Error signal 2 ∆U, ∆ϕ, ∆ƒ:One or more of the three voltages, phase positions, phase sequence or the mainsfrequency are diverging from the required value.Depending on the nature of their occurrence ∆-errors are evaluated cumulatively.Any error is signalled by the red LED and is reported after expiry of the set alarm-delay time (tdel 0,2...5s) via 7-4-5.In the correct status (ok) the green LED is illuminated (4-5 open, 4-7 closed).

The ESU-D2 monitors the isolation resistance in non-groundedDC-networks (24-48VD).Two alarm steps (prealarm AL1 and main alarm AL2) areindicated via separate output contacts.Settable alarm delay (tdel): 0,1-10sec.Displays: bargraph-display of the measured earthing resistance4...30k (green = ok). Thermo Protection Relay

The TSR19 is intended to monitor the temperature of motor coils,generators and transfomers.It detects the temperature of the windings over the change inresistance of the PTC thermistors 1 or the position of the thermoswitches 2 . The circuit is designed to detect a break in the conti-nuity of the detection circuit and ground failures.On position “PTC”, line or sensor fault is also detected.Reset after failure detection: Press reset button or interrupt supplyvoltage for >200ms.

The Base unit device is delivered fully operational and includes the small aerial CMS-ANT.

Before installation, the fi nal location of installation must be taken into consideration.

For installation inside a control panel, the small device aerial may not be suitable and needs to be replaced by the antenna with magnetic pod (CMS-ANT-MAG/2.5M) or by the external antenna (CMS-ANT-SPEZ/5M).

These two antennae provide considerably better results and improve communication with the mobile network.

The programming software QUICK IIallows easy and transparent pro-gramming of the Comat BoxX witha PC.QUICK II is based on Windows®.127 function blocks can be storedinside the program memory of theComat BoxX.Stored programs cannot be losteven during a power loss.Therefore back up batteries are notneeded.With the simulation tool, the set upcan be tested on the PC beforecommissioning.Example: Page 4

The Comat BoxX can be program-med by PC or with the snap-on LCDdisplay with integrated functionkeys.It is possible to modify time intervalsof the function blocks in the existingcontrol program on site directly onto the installation.The LCD display can be connectedto the Comat BoxX to visualizeconditions or may be removed(without voltage) and used onanother Comat BoxX.

The 24V versions of the Comat BoxXcan also process analogue signals0...10V with increments of 0.1V .All inputs can be used or configuredat random as analogue or digitalinputs.Function blocks for the comparisonof analogue values are available,i.e. to monitor temperature in aheating system.
