currentlycallthe“MeetingPlace”wastheoriginal

SaxtonB.LittleLibrary.Whenthelibrarymoved

acrossthestreetin1985theoldbuildingserved

asameetingspacefortownorganizations.OnSeptember19,1989,theBoardofSelectmenvotedto

renamethebuilding“TheMeetingPlace”.Thegirlscouts,homeschoolersandtheLionsClub

executiveboardwerethemostconsistentusers,althoughitwasnotanidealmeetingspace.

Inthesummerof2015thelibrarywasreturnedtotheMeetingPlaceasworkwentforward

onexpansionandrenovationoftheSaxtonB.LittleLibrary.The“MiniB”asitwasaffectionately

knownstayedintheMeetingPlaceuntilOctober,2016whenitreturnedtoitsnewlyrenovatedand

expandedfacility.

Duringthistimediscussionsabouttownspaceneedsandorganizationalneedsensued.What

seemedmostpressingwastheneedforahomeforalltheColumbiahistoricalmaterialscollectedby

theTownHistorianandtheColumbiaHistoricalSociety.Whatbetterspacethantheoldhistorical

buildingknownastheMeetingPlace,soinMarch2016theBoardofSelectmenvotedtorepurpose

thebuildingforthatuse.Inordertobemoreclearastoitspurpose,theBoardofSelectmenvoted

onJanuary17,2017torenamethebuilding

“TheHistoryPlace”.

MuchworkhasbeendoneontheHistoryPlaceoverthepastseveralmonths:arefurbished

woodenfloor,newenergyefficientwindows,anewclimatecontrolledsystemtoassistin

preservationofmaterials,paint,etc.Eachproject,orchestratedbyourFacilitiesManager,Bud

Meyers,hasbeendonewiththeideaofpreservingthisbeautifulbuilding(TheHistoryPlace)forthe

futureandmakingitahomefortheTownHistorianandtheColumbiaHistoricalSocietyandallthe

artifactsdepictingthehistoryofourveryspecialcommunity.
