RULES

To be tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, an organization must be

organized and operated exclusively for exempt purposes set forth in section 501(c)(3), and none of its earnings may inure to any private shareholder or individual. In addition, it may not be an action organization, i.e., it may not attempt to influence legislation as a substantial part of its activities and it may not participate in any campaign activity for or against political candidates.

TAX RETURN AND COMPILATION AUDIT

• You must file a return

• You should have your books audited annually for your benefit also because of grants and certain agency requirements such as United Way

• Your foundation bank account should be at a different bank than where the school banks at• Don’t mix the money

TAX RETURN AND COMPILATION AUDIT CON’T

• Receive financial advice and procedures from a professional (i.e. system CFO or independent accountant)

• We have an independent accountant that volunteers• We pay someone to file our tax return• We pay a different accountant to complete a

compilation audit• usually washes out because of their contributions

or their support of our fundraisers
