As the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States intensified in the late 1940s and early 1950s, hysteria over the

perceived threat posed by Communists in the U.S. became known as the Red Scare. The Red Scare led to a range of actions that had a

profound and enduring effect on U.S. government and society. Federal employees were analysed to determine whether they were

sufficiently loyal to the government, and the House Un-American Activities Committee, as well as U.S. Senator Joseph R.

McCarthy, investigated allegations of subversive elements in the government and the Hollywood film industry. The climate of fear and repression linked to the Red Scare finally began to ease by the late

1950s.

House ‘Un-American’ Activities Commission

It was created in 1938 to investigate disloyalty and subversive activities on the part of private citizens, public employees, and those organisations suspected of having Communist ties. In 1969, the House changed the committee's name to "House Committee on

Internal Security". When the House abolished the committee in 1975, its functions were transferred to the House Judiciary Committee.

Investigated the government and particularly the hollywood film industry.. ‘Mccarthyism’ ......McCarthyism is known as making accusations of disloyalty, treason etc, without regard to proper evidence.

Communist Control Act of 1954Implemented by Dwight Eisenhower (34th President of the United States).

Outlawed the Communist Party of the United States and criminalised membership in, or support for the Party. The Act made membership to the Communist Party a criminal act and stipulated that all Party members would be sanctioned with up to a $10,000 fine or imprisonment for five years or both.

Controversy: - Would push the communist party underground- Breaches constitutional rights, such as: Freedom of Speech
