III. Proposed Donations to the Permanent Collection

Mr. Glenn Sanford and Mr. Bill Jones

Drawing

Drawing, framed, original poster design for Krewe of Amon-Ra, 1986, entitled "The Best of Broadway," by Glenn Sanford, ink on paper, pointillist style, signed by the artist

Description:

The donor has prized this drawing since he created it 35 years ago for the Krewe of Amon-Ra. He loaned it for the recent exhibition "Grand Illusions: The History and Artistry of Gay Carnival in New Orleans" and has now agreed to make it a permanent gift. The LSM Carnival Collection includes an example of the limited-edition print that is based on this original drawing.

Accession Justification/Provenance:

The donor created this drawing himself as the original artwork used by the Krewe of Amon-Ra for their collectible limited-edition poster in 1986.

Mrs. Mary Metoyer

painting

Painting, portrait of Paul Metoyer as King of the Krewe of Armeinius, 2017, entitled "Voodoo King," by Fredrick Guess, oil on canvas, framed, signed by the artist Painting, portrait of Paul Metoyer as Returning King of the Krewe of Armeinius, 2018, entitled "King on the World," by Fredrick Guess, oil on canvas, framed, signed by the artist

Description:

Paul Metoyer proudly reigned as the King of the Krewe of Armeinius, one of the city's oldest gay Carnival krewes, in 2017. He portrayed the "Voodoo King" at the ball, attired in a lavish costume with a dramatic wide feathered backpiece. In the custom of all gay krewes, he was honored the following year as the Returning King, having the good fortune to enjoy the experience on the occasion of the krewe's historic 50th anniversary. For both occasions, Metoyer asked renowned New Orleans artist Fredrick Guess, also an Armeinius member, to paint his portraits in his royal costumes. Both portraits hung in places of honor in his Metairie apartment. Sadly, in 2020, Metoyer was diagnosed with ideopathic pulmonary fibrosis (unrelated to the covid pandemic) and was awaiting a lung transplant when he passed away at age 55. Just prior to his death, he expressed his fervent wish to his family that his prized portraits be preserved in a museum, and shortly after his passing, his family offered the paintings to LSM, having seen the exhibition "Grand Illusions: The History and Artistry of Gay Carnival in New Orleans." Paul had also seen the exhibition before his death. Both portraits will be rotated into the permanent Mardi Gras galleries in the Presbytere.

Accession Justification/Provenance:

This gift is being made by the mother of Paul Metoyer.

plaque

Historical marker removed from the grounds of the Grant Parish Courthouse, 200 Main Street, Colfax, Louisiana, on May 15, 2021, due to historical inaccuracies. The marker reads: "On this site occurred the Colfax Riot in which three white men and 150 negroes were slain. This event on April 13, 1873 marked the end of carpetbag misrule in the South."

Description:

Reconsideration of Confederate and Reconstruction-related monuments and commemorative objects has been a significant topic of public debate both nationally and in Louisiana for the past several years, perhaps most clearly shown in the controversies over the removal of four monuments in New Orleans in 2017. This marker allows us to tell that story with an artifact that is more compact than most dismantled commemorative symbols; its north Louisiana origin also helps fill a geographic gap in our collection. There are a number of exhibition possibilities for this marker: 1) Civil Rights Museum; 2) the civil rights section of Capitol Park; 3) the regional history section of the Sports Hall of Fame and Northwest Louisiana History Museum. Currently, LSM does not have any artifacts that illustrate this ongoing story of regional and national importance.

Accession Justification/Provenance:

Erected by the state of Louisiana in 1950; it remained on site outdoors for slightly more than 70 years. Refers to 1873 event in Colfax.

For Discussion: Revisions to the Collecting Statement of the Collections Management Policy

Current Collecting Statement (Approved May 2019)

The Louisiana State Museum (LSM) collects the art, artifacts, and material culture related to the history, art,

and culture of Louisiana. It preserves these items in the public trust for the benefit of present and future

generations. We seek objects that are exemplary and/or extraordinary, embody and evoke stories and

meanings that are rich and complex, and invite and compel our audiences (and our staff) to look for deeper

knowledge and broader relevance. Our collections form the foundation for research, scholarship, exhibition,

public programs, and outreach.

Given the museum’s current staffing, financial position, deaccessioning initiative, and exploration of new

collections storage facilities, a conservative approach to accessions for fiscal years 2019 and 2020 is

appropriate. A primary criterion for the LSM’s collecting activity is an established plan for the object(s)

under consideration to be exhibited. Concurrently, the authenticity, originality, relevancy with regards both

to current and future exhibits and research, and scarcity of the artifact are also important criteria. In its

collecting practices, the LSM will adhere to the legal and ethical guidelines of the museum profession and all

applicable laws.

The Museum strives to preserve and conserve its collection to the best of our abilities and resources.

However, our staff and financial resources are limited. As such, careful consideration shall be given toward

acquiring any objects that may require special care. Only those objects whose benefits to our mission

outweigh the burden of their care shall be considered for acquisition.

In most cases, only objects that are deemed to be authentic and/or an original example shall be accessioned

into the Museum’s permanent collections, however in some cases an object’s provenance can give it

important historical and research value. Reproductions, duplicates, or forgeries should be considered for the

Study Collection or the Museum’s supplemental research files.
