Description: In this workshop, participants will have a brief overview of best practices on online course

the Online Education Initiatives (OEI).

Description: This is a hands on working session, facilitated by ASR Analytics, the creators of Colleague
Reporting and Operating Analytics (CROA) student success analysis suite. Facilitators will introduce CROA
reports that were designed specifically for EVC. These data and reports in CROA provide rich information
about enrollment trends, demographics, course offerings, financial aids, student success, and institutional
effectiveness.

Climate Change across the
Curriculum
Facilitator: Steven Mentor Mishra Room
Description: This presentation will briefly discuss climate change and global warming as a context across
the curriculum. Instructors from different disciplines will share their own lesson plans regarding this issue.
The presenter will share his own Climate Change unit from English 1C, and a future unit for English 1C and
1A. Finally, faculty will have a chance to discuss their own interest in climate change as a pedagogical
opportunity for making connections across the curriculum, and as a group we’ll brainstorm possible
assignments and curricula for various disciplines.
Participants will be able to:
Bringing the issue of climate change into our educational setting as a topic that crosses disciplines
Getting faculty and staff excited about the potential for students’ active learning and making
connections across disciplines
Applying themes of active learning, reading, writing and thinking to the presenter’s discipline, and

Faculty Rights and Obligations

Description: This workshop will enable full-time and adjunct faculty to learn about new and continuing
rights guaranteed to them by the Union contract. The goals of educating our students and ensuring positive
Student Success is enhanced by a well-educated, informed faculty member regarding their contract. Class
Size, Professional Responsibilities, Office hours, etc. all contribute to Student Success-our goal. We will
focus on Evaluations (and request feedback on SLO assessments in the Contract per the ACCJC). We will
learn how to move across and down the Salary Schedule and filing for Sabbaticals through the PRC
(Professional Development Committee). There will be time for questions and answers about the connections
between our contract and student success.

Description: This session is provided by the SLO Sub-committee and is available to any participants
interested in working on assessment related work including updating assessment matrices at the course or
program level and/or conducting assessment planning activities for the academic year. Participants will need
to bring a flash drive and any assessment data to the session.
Participants will be able to:
Develop an assessment plan for 2015/16 academic year for courses and/or programs OR
Complete data analysis on assessment results, document results and develop interventions for
improvement (if needed) AND/OR
Document reassessment data to “close the loop” after interventions have been implemented
Participate in assessment related dialogue, including sharing lessons learned, challenges or success
stories after closing the loop.
Accreditation & Program Review

Description: Session presenters will provide an update on the 2016 Accreditation Self Study draft. For the
remaining time, presenters will review EVCs program review process and describe the importance of
program review. This session is open to any learner interested in these topics; however, those undergoing
program review for 15/16 are highly encouraged to attend. This session is facilitated by members of the
Institutional Effectiveness Committee (IEC).

Physics Labs (Part 1)

Description: This workshop is divided in three segments, each illustrating aspects of a new approach to
teaching Mechanics in lab: video analysis using smartphones. In Part 1, participants will use their
smartphones to shoot videos outside the classroom (this is the fun part). The videos are those of a ball
thrown upward following a vertical path (“Free-Fall Motion”) and of a soccer ball being kicked at an angle
creating a curved path. The latter can be replaced by throwing a football and comparing effects of air
resistance with groups kicking the soccer ball (“Projectile Motion”).

Description: Have you ever wondered why strategic planning is necessary and how it impacts the work
done on the campus? Then this session is for you. The session presenter will cover discussion topics around
the necessity of strategic planning and its connection to the work with our students. EVCs strategic plan will
be reviewed and opportunity for dialogue will be encouraged. This session is facilitated by the Institutional
Effectiveness Committee (IEC) and is open to all those interested.

Mental Wellness on Campus: Early

Description: This workshop will highlight on how to help detect early warning signs of psychosis that may
prove threat to young adults, and to provide effective support and treatment.

Description: In this workshop, we’ll go over the basics of using Turnitin (available on Moodle) to make
submitting papers, checking for originality and plagiarism, grading papers, keeping track of grades, and saving
paper a simple process.
Participants will be able to:
Set up a Turnitin assignment with its start date, due date, postdate, and points possible and post to
Moodle.
Understand the originality report generated by Turnitin as an instructional tool, and allow students the
option to see the originality report and correct their paper before handing in the final copy.
Use the grading feature to grade papers online with comments (both personalized and standardized) that
the students can access at any time.
Export submitted papers as text, pdf, or xml files to grade offline.
Colleague Web UI Basic Navigation Facilitator: Dan Hawkins (DO-ITSS) Assessment

Description: Demonstration of how to use the basic navigation features of Colleague Web UI. The Datatel
client, UI Desktop, is no longer supported by Ellucian and has been replaced by Colleague Web UI. This
workshop is for counselors, staff, administrators and others who are making the transition from UI Desktop
to Web UI.

Theatre in the Classroom

Description: This workshop will both explain and demonstrate how acting techniques can be used in the
classroom. Prof. Ross uses his expertise in acting and directing in his Theater Arts classes, and has also
brought those skills to 2-hour acting “workshops” in Prof. Kramer’s English 1B classes, where students learn
what it takes to “translate” the written version of a play into performance. If you teach a class in which
drama is or could be on the syllabus, come see how to bring that work alive for our students, many of whom
have had very little exposure to live theater.
Participants will be able to:
Get a direct experience—as well as thoughtful explanations--of how and why theatrical techniques
can enrich learning at EVC
Acquire techniques that can improve students’ public speaking skills in the classroom and beyond
Broaden college community’s appreciation of and involvement in theatrical culture, and to encourage
use of our campus theater, which is a state-of-the-art facility

Description: This workshop is divided in three segments, each illustrating aspects of a new approach to
teaching Mechanics in lab: video analysis using smartphones. . In Part 3, participants will set air pucks in a
route of collision and analyze their motion before and after collision (“Conservation of Linear Momentum”).
If time allows, we will discuss several other applications in which video analysis can be employed.
