As well as running a fondly remembered rabbit freezing works on the site, Frank Collins was a Councillor, the inaugural CTDA President and local businessman. Just like Holly Barkell who donated the building now housing the Warehouse to the community of Clunes in the early 1970’s in memory of her late husband, Frank Collins richly deserves recognition for his generosity. Speaking of Holly Barkell, excellent conservation work has recently been done on the 1911 wedding portrait of Mr. William Barkell and Miss Ellen Hollway (Hollie) Harris which now occupies a proud place in the Holly Barkell Gallery. It’s a classic early early 20 th century wedding photo well worth checking out. TOWN HALL BREAK IN Following another break in at the Town Hall on Sat. It is also the 25 th anniversary of the end of the much loved - in hindsight- Shire of Talbot and Clunes. Next year, 2021, is the 150 th of the laying of the foundation stone of the first hospital and Nov.19,2021 will be the 100 th of the unveiling of the iconic WW1 soldier memorial by “Pompey” Elliott. CLUNES IN PRINT SPECIAL EXHIBITION To coincide with this year’s Booktown, the Museum is planning a Clunes In Print window display and special exhibition in the upstairs temporary exhibition space. She was the daughter of Vic Steinhauser who was born in Clunes in 1897 and, as well as well researched and well written chapters on the Steinhausers of Clunes and the Steinhauser and Weickhardt connection to Butzbach, Germany, there is fascinating material on visiting Clunes as a child in the 1930’s, arriving by train, and staying with her father’s relatives, the Gaylords and Sparks. BRINGING BACK THE CANNON

The brief for the conservator who will be writing a report on siting options is almost finalized and the curator at Seaworks in Williamstown has been informed that the cannon will be returning to Clunes later in the year. As well, the installation of a plaque honoring Frank Collins for donating the land now aptly known as Collins Place is well in train. TOWN HALL BREAK IN

Following another break in at the Town Hall on Sat. Labour Day Long Weekend Music will be by “Matthew Bright & the Crazy Ants”

Last month’s Market was perfect with a cool cloudy day, a great relief after our hot conditions. A big crowd attended, with the added bonus of a car club from

Ballarat who stopped off for morning tea, and had to wander around town answering the rally questions.

We welcomed first time stalls, Allendale Nursery and De-Bee Signature Balms. Makers Market stalls were also set up in Collins Place and Fraser Street which adds interest,

atmosphere and colour.

Wood Raffle was a sell out, so you must get in early to get your lucky number. March raffle was sponsored by Sharon Doody from the Rose & Oak Café, and lucky

winner was Lois Nichols (Market Volunteer)with ticket No 40 and drawn by Dennis Twentyman. March raffle has been donated by our wonderful Newsagents Cyn &

Craig. It is wonderful to see the Newsagency open again; all brand new and bright with a Bendigo Bank, Tattslotto, Newspapers, Magazines and all the usual items available

to purchase. So please pop in and give them your support. Craig & Cyn are always happy to help.

March Market will coincide with the return of the 10th Annual Historic Vehicle Show being held up at the Clunes Showgrounds; so plenty of action around Clunes on this

weekend. Come on down and enjoy

Rob Fawcett “Thank You”

Rob will be remembered as a bio-dynamic farmer and for his deep concern that our food is often being poisoned by the use of chemicals.

He participated in and enthusiastically supported the Clunes Football Club, Clunes &

District Agricultural Society, Book Town Festival, Words in Winter, Writer’ Group, Garden Club, CTDA and local businesses.

Robbie will be remembered too for his

kindness, gentleness, willingness to help others and for always being prepared to have a go at something. His courage was remarkable and

his wonderful smile unforgettable.

Thank you all for your many acts of consideration during his debilitating illness. Your kindness and care were appreciated.

Since my loss I have very much valued every gesture of help you have given me, whether it

has been a simple touch to show you understand my sadness or a shared meal or coffee. The offers of practical help and the

cards, flowers, food and hugs have a helped.

Thank you - Rhonda

Clunes Former Free Library (aka The Mechanics Institute) By Phil Taig

Starting in Britain, the Mechanics Institute concept was enthusiastically embraced by the Colonies in Australia as a facility to extend the education of the average working man. The movement was encouraged by State Governments and in Victoria an annual grant was provided which was divided amongst all the Mechanic Institutes. It became a mark of honour for every City (a few) and Town (many) to have its own Mechanics Institute. The movement became so popular that by the early 1870’s, government financial support had dwindled and the grant had become insignificant*.

Free Libraries were also encouraged by the Victorian Government with a large unvarying grant provided annually and to take advantage of this the Clunes Mechanics Institute changed its name. In

1874, by mutual agreement, the organisation known as Clunes Mechanics Institute ceased to exist as all members of the operating committee voluntarily resigned. At the same time another committee was formed to run a Free Library in the existing building. All members of both committees had agreed that this change would be of more benefit to the Clunes community.

*By the year 1900 there were about 1000 Mechanic’s Institutes in Victoria, each sharing one thousandth of the annual grant.

Kitchen Upgrade

The dilapidated kitchen cupboards were demolished prior to a fresh coat of paint being applied to the kitchen walls and ceiling. As announced in the February Newsletter a funding grant has been obtained for a new kitchen to be installed. It is expected that work will start mid March. Currently floor tiles have been sourced, together with some kitchen appliances including a microwave, several refrigerators, a stove and an oven.

Next Committee Meeting

In the past few years the Committee of Management of Clunes Former Free Library, (COM), has received a great deal of assistance from its ‘Friends of the Free Library’ in the local community for which it is very appreciative. It is now seeking to expand its Committee of five to help with ideas for the distribution of funds that are expected from benevolent sources this year. There are no prerequisites other than some life experience and common sense, and no obligations other than one hour per month to attend a meeting. Why not come along to our next meeting and meet some new friends on Thursday 26th March at the Free Library in Templeton Street, starting at 7:30 pm.

The Chairman of the Committee is Graeme Johnstone and he may be contacted on 0427 534 532 or via e-mail at ‘[email protected]

Clunes Reconciliation Group By Pat Hockey

On a Saturday morning in mid-November the Clunes Reconciliation Group gathered in Fraser Street for our first outing to a local site of significance in our regions indigenous

history. The Bull Gully Rock Wells just south of

Maryborough have been described as the best example of indigenous drinking wells in this state. This extraordinary site was thought to be crucial to the local people and early records note their use by the local indigenous people. The site is located in an otherwise dry landscape devoid of permanent creeks and ponds so it is easy to imagine just how important the water available here was. I personally found standing before them I felt a real sense of the presence of countless people echoing down through the eons to whom these four drinking hollows were of central importance to their rich and complex lives in those rolling hills.

One of the first issues that we identified as a group since coming together for the first time in the spring was that we felt we knew far too little about local indigenous history, both in its long history in the pre-European ages and the history of dispossession in this region. This was an appalling (and perhaps deliberate) omission in our school education that by some accounts continues to this day. Local Reconciliation

Groups in this state operate under the auspices of Reconciliation Victoria. At the moment our own Clunes Reconciliation Group is working to achieve official recognition as a group by developing our guiding documents as we work to expand our understanding of the many issues.

If you would like to join us on this journey please email me at [email protected] to be added to our email newsletter or give me a call on 0457463971.

A message from the Clunes Fire Brigade

While conditions have eased in some parts

of the state, it is still very dry and we are looking at above average temperatures for

Victoria for the remainder of March. Our message to the community is that

there is still the risk of fast-running scrub and grass fires. We need to remain vigilant

and prepared. Fire restrictions are still in force, even

though the weather is getting cooler. Do not be tempted to burn off before

restrictions are lifted It is anticipated that fire restrictions will

be lifted early May

For years now, Victorians have been using the end of daylight saving as a reminder to

make sure they have a working smoke alarm. This year, the end of daylight saving

falls on the 5th of April – don’t forget to

change your smoke alarm battery when you change your clocks.

At the end of daylight saving change your smoke alarm battery with a long life battery when you change your clock. House fires occur more frequently during the winter months, and making sure you go in to

winter with a working smoke alarm makes good sense. If you have a hard-wired

smoke alarm, these still have a battery as a back up and the battery needs to be

changed as well. We also urge people to help elderly relatives and neighbours who

may not be capable of changing their smoke alarm batteries themselves.

Clunes Golf Club By Ray Skinner

What a mixed bag of weather we have had throughout January. Quite dry, with only slightly more than half of our January average rainfall, although a very nice soaking rain towards the end of the month. Again we have had to endure some hot Summer days and then

"rug up" as the temperature plummeted by up to 20 degrees the next day.

Recognising our " Duty of Care " Clunes Golf Club has developed an Extreme Heat Policy and all Members should now be aware of our revised tee-off times. Normal tee-off is at 10 am, however when forecast is 35 degrees and above -- 8 am start. (42 degrees and above --- NO PLAY )

Work continues around the Course with new Tee-beds being constructed on the 2nd and 3rd holes. New turf will be laid in coming weeks. Huge thanks to Ian Rowland in particular and Kevin Steart for his assistance.

Results for January

Sunday 5th. January Stroke event and Monthly Medal Winner Dean Marshall Nett 66 Runner-up Kevin Steart Nett 71

Sunday 19th. January 1st. round of the Noel Keeshan Memorial Shield Winner Graeme Rowland 46 points Runner-up Ian Rowland 38 points

Wednesday 22nd. January was just a "fun" event with (3) clubs and Putter Winner Ray Skinner 38 points Runner-up Ian Rowland 37 points

Sunday 26th. January 2nd. round of the Noel Keeshan Memorial Shield Winner John Horner 45 points Runner-up Ian Rowland 43 points

Overall Winner was Graeme Rowland with 83 points over the two rounds.

Some good results throughout the month with a number of handicaps starting to come down to where they should be.

As Golfers we are all "eagerly" awaiting the introduction of the new " World Handicap System. " Not sure how this will work and I will report further in our next article.
