In her new album, “Eve,”Grammy award winnerAngélique Kidjo honors

the women in Africa, and paystribute to Rotary’s work to endpolio worldwide.

The singer and activist fromBenin chose to include Rotaryin the soon-to-be-releasedvideo of the album’s signaturesong, “Eva.” Rotary’s presencein the video is no coincidence. The relationship between thesinger dates back to 2011, whenshe joined about two dozencelebrities, including JackieChan, Jack Nicklaus, and JaneGoodall, in Rotary’s “ThisClose” polio awarenesscampaign.

“I am the cherry on top ofthe cake,” says Kidjo in anexclusive interview withRotary News. “The importantwork is done by the people inthe field.” With the voices ofKidjo and collaboratorNigerian signer Asa as abackdrop, the video shadows ayoung girl as she wandersabout in an old novelty shop. The curious girl turns on anold TV and sees the singers on-screen, followed by footage of aRotary Family Health Dayproject in South Africa.

She finds old photos andalbum covers of Kidjo and Asaand later, photos of poliosurvivors and polioimmunization activities. The

girl also finds a polio vaccinecooler used in immunizationcampaigns, and focuses on an"End Polio Now pin.

In addition to Rotary’sprominent role in the video,Kidjo has lent her voice to the“This Close” campaign, andauthored a 2011 World PolioDay op-ed and also attended aceremony that illuminated the“End Polio Now” message onthe New York Stock ExchangeBuilding. She was also thekeynote speaker at the 2012Rotary World PeaceSymposium and RotaryInternational Convention inBangkok.

“It’s great for Rotary tohave Angélique Kidjo as suchan engaged supporter of polioeradication,” says PetinaDixon-Jenkins, Rotary’sPolioPlus communicationmanager. “When she talksabout helping others --particularly girls and women inAfrica -- it’s clear thateverything comes from theheart.”

‘POSTER GIRL’ FOR POLIOERADICATION

During a visit on 10February to Rotary’s WorldHeadquarters in Evanston,Illinois, Kidjo spokepassionately and candidly toRotary staff about theimportance of vaccinations,

her experience as a UNICEFgoodwill ambassador, hermotivation behind “Eve,” andher recently releasedautobiography “Spirit Rising:My Life, My Music.”

Kidjo told stories about hermother’s insistence onsanitation and proper hygiene. This diligence included gettingher children vaccinatedagainst polio.

“I’m a poster girl for theEnd Polio Now campaign,” saysKidjo. “I am from a generationwho has witnessed thedevastating effects of polio. When I discovered how closewe were from eradicatingpolio, I was very motivated tobe a part of this movement. It isso rare when you canaccomplish something sospectacular.”

Kidjo says that a goodeducation must first start withgood health.

“The lack of informationmakes vaccination campaignsvery dangerous for women,”

says Kidjo. “It’s up to the menin Africa to show women andchildren that vaccinations arecrucial for their family’shealth. This isn’t being done inmany countries.”

For more than 10 years,Kidjo has served as a UNICEFgoodwill ambassador andtraveled throughout Africa asan advocate for health careand education. UNICEF, alongwith Rotary, is one of fourspearheading partners of thePolio Global EradicationInitiative.

She says the most gratifyingpart of being a UNICEFambassador is meetingamazing people with thepassion and strength to be ableto change their communities.

“People are not justnumbers on a spreadsheet,”says Kidjo. “Try to involve thepeople you are trying to help inthe decision making. Thesolution is never going to comefrom the outside.”
