Rotary International President 2015-2016

K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran is CEO and founder of Printcare PLC, a publicly listed printing, packaging, and digital media solutions company. It is arguably the world’s largest supplier of tea bag packaging, catering to nearly every major tea brand, with manufacturing facilities in Sri Lanka and India. Printcare is the winner of national and international awards of excellence. Ravindran has been a featured speaker at several international print and packaging forums. Ravindran also serves on the board of several other companies in Sri Lanka and India and charitable trusts, including the MJF (Dilmah) Charitable Foundation. He is the founding president of the Rotary-sponsored Sri Lanka Anti Narcotics Association, the largest such agency in Sri Lanka. During the country’s civil war, Ravindran was involved in the business community efforts to find peaceful solutions to the conflict and was a featured speaker at the United Nations-sponsored peace conference in New York for the Sri Lankan diaspora in 2002. A third generation Rotarian and a member himself since the age of 21, Ravindran has served on the Rotary International Board of Directors and The Rotary Foundation Board of Trustees and as RI treasurer. As his country’s national PolioPlus chair, Ravindran headed a joint task force of the Sri Lankan government, UNICEF, and Rotary and worked closely with UNICEF to successfully negotiate a ceasefire with the northern militants during National Immunization Days. Aided by Rotary’s efforts, Sri Lanka reported its last case of polio in 1994. He also chaired the Schools Reawakening project, in which Rotary District 3220 raised more than $12 million to rebuild over 20 tsunami-devastated schools to benefit 14,000 children. He continues to play a role in his club’s project to build a cancer prevention and early detection center in Sri Lanka. Once completed, it will be the only dedicated national facility to offer comprehensive screening and early detection services. Ravindran is a recipient of The Rotary Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service, Distinguished Service Award, and Service Award for a Polio-Free World. He and Vanathy have been married since 1975, and they have two children and a recently born grandchild

Dear fellow Rotarians, All of us reach a point in our lives when we must decide what we want our legacy to be. Do we want to be remembered for the material things we pursued or the relationships we nurtured? Do we want others to recall only the cars we drove or the jobs we had when they think of us? Will this world be better off for our having been in it? In Rotary, we know what legacy we are leaving for the world. When Rotarians see a need, they meet it. When Rotarians see conflict, they work to bring peace. Rotarians work every day to make the world a better place. We have all come to Rotary for different reasons, but we have stayed in Rotary because it has brought out the best in us. It has shown us the value of integrity, compassion, and dedication, and in Rotary, we now have family members around the world. In short, Rotary has made us better people — people who want to make a difference. Rotary has been a gift to each of us. This year, we will give that gift to others. Whether that is through participation in a National Immunization Day, a strategic partnership funded by a Rotary grant, an invitation issued to someone to join Rotary, or a simple act of goodwill, we will continue to share Rotary’s good work with people around the globe. In telling our Rotary stories, we will tell others about the many ways that Rotary has given us a legacy that lasts. I look forward to the great work we will do together in Rotary this year, as we strive to Be a Gift to the World. Sincerely,

K.R. Ravindran 2015-16 President, Rotary International 7 March 2015

The Scout movement featured strongly in Ian’s early life, firstly as a Scout and then as a Leader. His hobbies include caravanning, boating and fishing when time permits. Ian’s vision for Rotary in District 9650 is to strengthen existing Clubs, create a renewed interest in service to the community, to promote the public image and the relevance of Rotary. He will continue to support the Rotary Foundation and have some fun along the journey, to make a difference to his community, the country and Rotary International.

The new Rotary Foundation is designed to:

Simplify Foundation programs and processes consistent with the mission

Focus Rotarian service efforts where they will have the greatest impact by addressing priority world needs that are relevant to Rotarians

Offer program options to help achieve both global and local goals

Increase the sense of ownership at the district and club levels by transferring more decisions to the districts

ROTARY FOUNDATION GRANTS

There are now TWO types of Grants:

1. Rotary Foundation District Grants

The Rotary Foundation District Grants are block grants made to districts for up to 50 percent of their District Designated Fund (DDF). District grants offer the flexibility to respond quickly to immediate needs or to plan projects with clubs locally or in other countries. These grants can be used for a wide variety of activities, including, but not limited to funding scholarships, supporting vocational teams, sponsoring volunteer service, providing disaster relief and carrying out community and international service projects. District Grants can be for amounts up to about $4,000 (depending on the amount available and the number of clubs which apply) and projects need to include a contribution from the club. District Grants are applied for via an application form that can be downloaded from the District website. Applications go to the District Grants Chair (PDG Ken Hall in 2015-16). The deadline is usually in October, but confirmation of this will be given in the District eNews.

2. Rotary Foundation Global Grants

The Rotary Foundation Global Grants support larger, international projects with sustainable, high-impact outcomes in one of six areas of focus that correspond to the Foundation’s mission:

Peace and conflict prevention / resolution.

Disease prevention and treatment

Water and sanitation

Maternal and child health

Basic education and literacy

Economic and community development Global Grants start at $30,000 which includes a contribution from the club.

Global Grants are applied for via My Rotary on the website www.rotary.org, but must be approved by the District Foundation committee first. Applications can be made at any time.

The Rotary Foundation

OUR CHARITY

Two needs……………………………….……………Two ways of giving

For a secure tomorrow - the Permanent Fund

An Endowed Fund invested permanently to build long term stability for the Foundation’s future. Earnings supplement the Annual Programs Fund. Includes gifts from Benefactors

and Bequest Society Members

For support today - the World Fund

Contributions support the Foundation’s humanitarian, educational and cultural programs each year. The Foundation Trustees encourage unrestricted gifts under the “Every

Rotarian Every Year” initiative.

With unrestricted giving, contributions are invested for 3 years, with interest earned paying for program operations and administration costs. Beginning in July 2015 a new funding model will be introduced. This will set aside 5% from the World Fund, 5% from cash contributions to Global grants and 10% from corporate gifts if it is needed to administer the programs.

Under the SHARE system, 50% of the total unrestricted giving goes to the World Fund, which in 2015-16 will support

Humanitarian programs

Grants Programs

Rotary World Peace Fellowships

and

50% goes to the District Designated Fund (DDF). Our district can choose to fund:

A block District Grant to be shared by clubs to undertake their own projects - up to 50% of the DDF can be used for this.

The remaining 50% can be used for Global grants Restricted Giving, tagged to a specific activity or funds for Polio.

PolioPlus

The eradication of Polio continues to be Rotary’s #1 objective. Hence contributions to the PolioPlus program are sought each year to sustain the last steps in this amazing task.

We are THIS CLOSE…..!!!
